This is the type of place that deserves to be placed on a pedestal and admired for years. Like the owner, I, too, have a degree in baking and pastry and can honestly say this place represents some of the best techniques and skills in all of Tulsa, Oklahoma, and possibly the entire mid-west. Everything is phenomenal. We always over order simply because our eyes cannot deny our souls from this treasure trove of pleasure. It is very apparent everything is made with the highest quality ingredients once you take your first bite. I would strongly suggest what I would consider the best item they have available, a baguette. It is text book perfect. Crusty, chewy open crumb, great flavor, and only lasts a day. So growing up in Charleston, SC it would seem odd that every Christmas we would have a traditional stollen from our family favorite bakery. Mmmm.... but warm fresh holiday bread always was so much better than fruit cake! Yuck! Now that my husband and I are new to Oklahoma, I had to find out my new place for our stollen fix. I spent a few days calling bakeries in the Broken Arrow area to see if they were making stollen. Some didn't even know what stollen was, and nobody made it. Not even the Bavarian Bakery!!! After some time I thought "ça, ça m'énerve!" I finally decided to consult the good folks of Broken Arrow and went on the Nextdoor app to inquire where I could find traditional stollen. I got lots of suggestions, and then someone suggested St Amon. I called and the lady was just so sweet and seemed tickled that I finally had found my stollen after telling her about my search and how it's been a long standing tradition for me. She explained this year they will do the traditional stollen with marzipan and will use grapefruit peel rather than lemon peels. Plus they are only making 24 loaves, so immediately I went ahead and prepaid for a loaf. I was also pleasantly surprised that the loaf will only cost $14 vs the $20 we normally pay. I haven't even gotten the stollen yet, but I'm already so happy and excited that St Amon will make it happen. It's not listed in their holiday order form, so you have to ask for it. We have been here quite a few times since they opened. One of the best croissants and eclairs you can get around Tulsa. They are fluffy and flakey instead of the usual doughy ones. We enjoyed the orange liqueur truffles too. Macarons were nice, but were on the small side. The sandwiches were ok. Think their coffee is made from a Keurig coffee maker, so don't bother with that. All in all, we would be there more often but it is a little too far from our place. I can't wait to see what pastries they would come up for Valentine's Day. We used to love this place but over the course of the last several months I have wasted a lot of money and food in an attempt to give it another try. I just don't understand what has happened? I took two bites of a bacon and cheese croissant yesterday and threw it away, which has become typical. Before that it was a cinnamon roll...quiche...raspberry croissant...bacon and cheese croissant again...I could keep going. The point is I really did love this place but for months it has been dry and tasteless or greasy and borderline stale. And what should elevate the tart, the pastry cream ("vanilla pudding") base was tasteless. Overall it was bland. Saint-Amon Baking Company is a little out of the way for many since it's on 121st, but I, for one, am happy that they made the Tulsa/Bixby area their home. I went in on a Saturday, and they were out of gluten-free bread, but had so many other great looking things. Blueberry scones were out to be sampled, the macaroons were beautiful and they had Cronuts. I'd never had a cronut before, but had heard a lot about them, and let me say...they were worth the cheat. I also had a chocolate mini-croissant, and it too was top notch. The bakery is owned by a local couple, both with pastry school backgrounds, and the husband is from France. It is a "from scratch" bakery and a YouTube video I watched about them indicates there is only one other authentic from scratch bakery in Tulsa. If you've ever been to Paris, you know how beautiful the items are that are showcased in the cases....the variety, the quality, the sheer beauty of each crafted piece will take you back there. A "French bakery" that doesn't bake French bread should have been my first clue. Bought two pumpkin and cranberry pound cakes, one for my family, one for a gift. The subtle pumpkin was overwhelmed by the sharp acidity of the cranberries - which is likely why I've never seen this combination before. When I tried to return it, I was told, "You knew it had cranberries when you bought it. Give it away or throw it away, we can't take it back." Despite a common misconception, real French people are not rude. And they are more interested in successful baked products than this sad imposter. Lesson learned. read more
