The address may say "10 Darnley Mains Road," but really it's just right on the A726/Nitshill Road.
Having no car and regularly needing foodstuffs, this is the closest grocery store to me. I am here often, and I have a bit of a love/hate relationship with this place.
I love their cafe (much to my surprise). I never thought I'd find myself occasionally having tea and a cupcake in a supermarket cafe, but honestly, it's really nice. It's set up on the second floor, away from the shopping area, and is bright with plenty of comfortable seats. The food is good. I've said it before--you Glaswegians really know how to do a cafe.
I love the TU line. No, really. It's Next knock-offs done cheap. It's a teensy bit pricier than the housewares you can get at Tesco, but also a bit nicer (probably since they are aping Next).
I love the Sainsbury's Basics line. A kilo of carrots for 50p! A duvet for £8! Chicken stock cubes for 10p! They really do provide the basics absolutely dirt cheap.
So that leads me to the hates. Right next to the "Basics" line will be the general "Sainsbury's" brand which is much more expensive. Why even bother? Then you get to the name brands and boom, the prices are extortionate. It's like a third-world mega-city in there, with the slums of the Basics brands rubbing right up next to the shiny, posh, extravagantly expensive name brands. It is very cheeky of them to price like this. And where there isn't a Basics brand, you'll often find the prices are just generally higher at Sainsbury's than any other supermarket.
OK, fine. I can live with that, especially since between the Basics and the reduced items you can usually get what you need for a reasonable cost. But then you have to deal with the customer service. The people that work here are either painfully earnest or painfully rude, but the tie that binds is their staggering inability to be helpful. It's either, "I'm so sorry, I wish I could help" or "At the end of the day, I can't help you." Either way, you're shit out of luck.
Last thing--even though it's enormous, it is oddly lacking in variety (unless you want margarine--there's a whole aisle of margarine). Items are not placed intuitively, so it can take a while to find anything. I spent twenty minutes trying to find a broom the other day, and then there it was, tucked away with the dog food. Of course, how could I have missed it? read more
