Owner is a mess.. doesn't supply hotel rooms with necessities (soaps, cups, toilet paper etc) I came here with my family and they're out fishing all day.. i stayed behind in the motel room. Clear as day look down at the towel and here we are folks...a big ass bed bug. I am literally shaking writing this review. They want $165 before taxes for this POS place. They do not care about the safety and well being of their customers. 3 different people requested toiletries saying "we don't have anything in our rooms" and bartender said "you gotta wait for the owner to get back" I have been looking forward to this trip for quite some time and now all I wanna do is go home I feel itchy and extremely paranoid and now I'm going to lose sleep. I have one more night here and I'm really considering sleeping in the back of the pick up truck. This isn't cool. This place should've been shut down years ago. read more

Total gem. Walking distance from the Soundview so we popped in to check it out. What an unexpected surprise. Decor was understated nautical, felt like we were inside a classic and comfortable wood boat. The servers were adorable- clearly family who care about the place. The food was seriously delicious. Best seafood I've had in years- the black seabass was the special and it was fresh and delicate, flavors were well balanced. My friend had the chicken dish and similarly raved. Don't miss the dessert- ours was an Italian specialty cake, I'm not usually a sweet fan but I wished I'd gotten my own and not shared. They had live music playing right outside on the front patio that was perfect for the relaxed mood. Overall what a treat- perfect meal for our last night in montauk. read more

I'm not sure you can call this place a diamond in the rough because it's in a premier spot in Montauk and it's "modest accommodations" compared to the million dollar mansions that surround the area, so let's call it "a rough spot on a diamond". From the look to the tavern to the people to the room it was everything we wanted and needed. The place looks like an island getaway that would go for $300 a night in other locations but because the faucets aren't made of gold and no one is waiting at our door with a hot towel this place is written off by many who come through Montauk. But for my fiancé and I, who only need a place to park the car and our heads after a long beach day and drinking night, it was perfect. I began calling places from East Hampton Main Beach around 4pm to find a place to crash for the night and each place either was full or over $400 a night. We had actually passed the Sail Inn when I found out there was vacant for less than $150 and we promptly pulled the e-brake and did a Vin Diesel U-turn and checked in. The woman on the phone turned out to be the bartender who set us up with some good drinks and we talked to the 3 people at the bar who turned out to be a cool crew. A gentlemen that dropped out of ZZ Top, the owner of the joint and a fellow construction professional. We had a bunch of laughs and we promised we'd be back once we got paid again. The bartender gave us our room key and reminded us to tip the chamber maid and gave us a wink (we left you $5 btw) and we walked up to our room. First of all the view was great being surrounded by the water 1/4 mile away in all directions. The room was big, clean, the AC worked and the bed was comfortable. We couldn't care less about rooms usually because we literally just drop our bags and go out until we can't see and then pass out in the vicinity of the bed but this place was actually really nice. We want to thank everyone at the Sail Inn for their warmth and hospitality. After a brief conversation we were treated regulars and we intend to make good on that distinction. read more

Located just off the Montauk Harbor, the Sail Inn is a bar, restaurant, and small hotel. C. and I stayed here two nights this past weekend. Off season, rates are quite reasonable -- $75 a night or so -- and given that the hotel has all of 10 rooms, you'll get solid attention and care from the proprietors. George, who runs the place, and his girlfriend Joanne, who tends bar, had just reopened after taking some time off for the winter. They'd spent the last few days painting the bar and dining room, but because they'd just opened, the kitchen wasn't in full swing. Usually, they offer a full menu -- attested to the fact that this shows up as a restaurant in its initial listing -- but off season, you might be limited to liquid fare and light appetizers. Our room was on the second floor and faced the water, which you could see across some vacant, marshy land and a row of homes closer to the coast. It was spacious -- came complete with a king-sized bed as well as a smaller day bed for travelling families -- and outside of one of the lamps being out, the room was in great condition. You might need to run the heat high to break the winter chill, but once the heater gets going, you'll need to turn it off; our room became a sauna on the first night! The bathroom is clean and of good size. They stock hotel-sized bars of Cashmere Bouquet soap, which was neat to see, but they don't offer guests shampoo, apparently. Full cable television and wifi in the room. We got a good signal with C.'s laptop this morning before leaving. Our only wish is that we'd spent more time with George and Joanne. They're friendly, helpful hoteliers. And if the restaurant's serving next time we're in the area, we'll be sure to stop by for a bite! A great hotel just off the beaten path in Montauk -- but near everything you could possibly want to do, in season or out. read more

Two meals on a Memorial Day weekend later and yearning for more. This establishment is old school, no frills and has heart. This isn't a tavern that has been open since a decade or two, try three decades. The history of this place is awesome and the service even better. The chef comes out to make sure he meets his customers in person. This is my first time in Montauk (mid-westerner) and I'll certainly frequent the place next time I visit. We didn't eat or drink there, so this is a review for our stay at the inn: Price: 5... VERY reasonable. Overall Comfort: 1.5 out of 5 Cleanliness: sheets/towels appeared to be clean / bathroom clean with a very small mildew problem. State of room: almost scary... There are dead bugs stuck to the walls and cigarettes burnt the carpet. The TV should be replaced. Room #4: hit MUTE twice to restore sound whenever it disappears. Room size: Large. Staff: Very nice and accommodating. Amenities: Almost none. Bring or buy what you need. The bar/restaurant onsite helps. There is a pool table and plenty of helpful locals there to enhance your stay. Good to know: - The wifi at the inn is a fantastic plus. - You are within walking distance to the harbor/marina with great breakfast [waterside cafe] and cuban food [havana club] is nearby. - We had issues with phone reception [AT&T]. - It's about $8 each way to town by cab. Karaoke on Wed nights. - There is a great liquor/wine store next door and a market about 2 blocks away. Verdict: You get what you pay for. Montauk is a MAGICAL place so if you don't want to spent a ton of money, this inn is not a bad option. read more

Very often the term "you get what you pay for " is said in a negative way. In this instance in a land of over priced hotels and restaurants . this mom and pop hotel and restaurant provides basic essentials in both room and board at very seasonal prices . The sheets , bed , room and bathroom were all clean . The food was very affordable and it's nice to know you always have a blue collar , affordable meal waiting for you back at the hotel . It was a fun scene too as people were hanging on the porch and having a few drinks and vert social . Going back and cant wait . read more

A Montauk staple that has remained true to the community. While many things have changed in Montauk. Some things have not. I personally find Montauk to be a piece of heaven right here on earth. However, when I start to feel a wee bit overwhelmed by the new age Mtk, the hipsters, and the crowds, I retreat over to the Sail. George, the owner of the Sail Inn has been able to preserve, "Traditional Montauk". As, he quietly, and creatively is standing behind his business model. He serves great drinks, and ice cold beer @ incredibly fair prices. His dinner specials are consistently good, competivly priced , and the portions are very fair. The bar houses a pool table, dart board, and actual cigarette machine. The conversation at the bar is a cross between stimulating, educational,friendly , sometimes opiniated , local gossip, whatever it is always entertaining. The final layer are the bartenders, who rotate regularly. This offers nightly different conversations and points of view. They too; are extremely colorful, and unique. Shout out to Paddy, Sunshine ,and Dottie The Sail also has rooms they are basic, and clean with the best prices in town. The bar closes early out of respect for the guests. George, runs a tight ship so sneaking in a group of friends, behaving boisterously, or with disrespect is not going to fly. So if you're looking for trouble; keep it moving. Probably one of the worst restaurant experiences I've ever had. Didn't get to eat dinner there because the bartender who's name is sunshine believe it or not was unbelievably rude. My wife and I stopped in with a couple of friends who are Montauk locals . We ordered a round of drinks (it was happy hour ) and were going to order dinner. I am a huge fan of the Sail Inn! All the rooms are very clean, and open. The bathrooms are spacious and also very clean. With a very friendly staff, the Sail Inn welcomes families, fishermen, or just your average weekend warrior. Everybody is made to feel at home. The bar is comparable to Cheers, where everybody knows your name. They also have a menu offering a variety of great foods! Do yourself a favor, and get out there to the East End and pay a visit to George and Joanne. Have a great time!! read more

Ok i really didn't want to write a review one way or the other but feel it pressing on me like a responsibility a month after my visit. I, like everyone who knows Montauk from the 80s and earlier, miss the old place of even 5 years back. There are certain things i don't miss ...the signs in restaurants, for example, that discouraged toddler customers. I understand that Montauk holds on to that identity by keeping a certain "stay out and go to hell" vibe. But when you check in for a relatively cheap rate (not that cheap) to be welcomed by very used thong underwear, a window that won't close without breaking a finger(yes, actually broke my finger), and dirty ashtrays then it's time to say byebye for good to the old Montauk. If this is how the old Montauk wants to represent itself. Before you ask, yes I did complain first to the bartender who was very nice and gave me a free beer after i showed her a pic of the dirty underwear (For her i give two of the three stars. The other one stands for the melancholy with which i write this review). Had I received anything like a sincere apology or something from the owner I would not now be writing this review. When I told the owner about the underwear the broken window and so on, he shrugged and mumbled. This is life and so i burn my bridge with you, sail inn, for good. read more

While I've never stayed here; I can definitely say the customer service needs major work! I'm not sure if I spoken with the owner, George. Whoever it was, he was definitely not a people person on the phone! I was planning for a 3-day getaway to Montauk with Hub and our daughter during the week of my bday. I was looking for somewhere to stay under $250/night. After reading up some reviews; I found exactly what I was looking for since it's close by to the beach, shopping, etc. After I was put on hold (while hearing the conversation in the back), he apologized and seem polite and cordial. I inquired if there was availability for Mon, 9/14. He asked for how many ppl. And I told him 3- 2 adults, and a child. He gave me room options of either 2 queen sz bed, 1 King & a twin, or another room with Jacuzzi. And quickly ask if I need a minute or two to think it over. I was going over the dates and pricing briefly and felt rush. He then asked if I was ready to book- yes or no. I told him it was for 2 nights. This must had struck a nerve. He got snappy and told me, well I don't have those rooms for Tue night. You said it was for Mon, yes? I told him, yes for that week. He didn't even offer other rooms or options to be helpful. I was so turned off by the attitude. I told him thanks and hung up after he said ok, thank you. Not putting money and time into a business that quite frankly don't give a damn. I might had caught him at a bad time or day. However; it's not an excuse to treat potential customers that way. Unfortunately, he was not as friendly as the reviews say. It's a shame b/c I would had def booked it here. I'll keep looking and try my luck elsewhere! read more

This is the place to stay if you are going out fishing with the boys in Montauk or if you need a nice get-away weekend with yourself or another. Rooms big,bathroom is full of towels and clean. By far, the best bargain in Montauk!!! George, the owner, is also a great cook and each day after a long day, we would come back to the Inn for a delicious dinner, a drink, and good conversation. The Sail Inn is a favorite of the locals too, so you get to meet some of the wonderful locals and hear their stories. Thanks George for a wonderful time! We will definitely be back!
