When this location first opened (maybe a year and a half ago) it was really good. Maybe not authentic, but good. This location is not as great as the one in Duluth. The food was a little bland. The water tasted like it came straight from the tap and didn't taste filtered at all. My cup of soup came out at the same time as my pad Thai. While I was enjoying my cup of soup, the pad Thai noodles were drying and sticking together. I was craving some pho, so I goggled pho near me and this popped up. I glanced at a few of the reviews and they were decent so I figured I'd give it a try. Love the fact that it was so close to where I was. This place has a pretty chill atmosphere which was pretty nice. I was sat and order taken pretty quickly. I asked for a large bowl of pho...with fatty flank, brisket and rare meat. Not completely sure that's what i got as I didn't see any rare meat...despite tht i thought the broth was really tasty. They give you lots of noodles and broth i think it could've used a bit more meat...but overall the food came out fast and was nice and hot. My experience was going ok until I noticed the lady gave every table attention asking if everything was going good except me. I finally pushed my big ass bowl of pho away and she came by asking if I wanted a box. I made a small mess as I poured my pho into the box some spilled...so I tried to clean it up a bit with the napkins I had. Maybe I didn't do very good n must of pissed her off because as I was leaving she scoffed and was mumbling and slammed the dishes into the bowl. Lol all I could think of was I shouldn't of even left the dam dollar I did because she dam sure didn't deserve it. I paid $13 bucks as it was. I'm a stickler for service...good service and they were not friendly to me at all. For that I leave three stars. After living on the west coast, I was sure I would never find comparable Asian specialty restaurants. That has held true for most Chinese cuisine here in Atlanta. You can find some decent Japanese offerings. Sushi and the like. Nothing that jumps to mind as outstanding, but certainly a few that are passable. My by heart belongs to Tom Yum. That big bowl of sumptuous chili laden goodness warms my soul. I would trek out to the Haight district twice a week to get my fill from bowls the size of your head. There are few things I miss about that city, and they all involve food. After trying soups all called by the same name but bearing very little resemblance to each other. I resigned myself to the fact that this was one of those dishes that just somehow could not be replicated with the ingredients available here. Or perhaps so far from the water. Fortunately a friend suggested I try a little spot in Decatur, Siagon cafe. He said it didn't look like much but the food was good and filling. And it wasn't expensive. Much to my surprise he was right on all accounts , yet had greatly undersold this place. I have tried most of the menu now and have not one complaint. The appetizers are tasty, well portioned and affordable. I recommend the Crab Puffs. Also know as crab triangle ,rangoons ,etc. Are the best I've ever had at a restaurant, The skins are perfectly fried and bursting with a cheese, crab and scallion mixture unusual to food service. You can actually see the crab. The dipping sauce is sweet pineapple "glaze'. Not the usual florescent pink goo. The soups are all delightful ,but you must try the tom yum. It is addictive. It is packed with seafood and the large chucks of whitefish soaked in that broth are to die for. One large serving is a meal in itself. The pad thai is a treat, and has more meat than most places serve. The curry shrimp is astounding in its portions and the sauce is magic. I could go on endlessly about all that they offer. But I digress. The food is well worth the trip to Decatur. The service is great. The prices are budget minded and perfect for the single dinner or a casual date. Its not too loud. Very delicious food and affordable. The servers here have always been very nice and helpful to us. They have decent portions and everything we ordered has always tasted good. They have a nice menu with a wide variety of choices so if you're bored of the same old Vietnamese dishes, you can venture out and try something new. The restaurant itself is very cute and clean. Mmm... pho. We've been looking for a good place for pho, so on a chilly evening we stumbled into Saigon Cafe. I got the chicken pho (pho ga) and my husband got the beef and meatballs pho (pho bo vien). Both were very tasty. The Broth was comforting with light undertones of herbs and not overly salty. The fresh Thai basil was the perfect pairing, too! I can't say it was the best pho I've ever had in my life, but it was very, very good. The first time I went here, with my hubby, I didn't know what to get and ended up with Pad Thai or something boring, and was totally unimpressed. But...the 2nd time I went, with my cool cousin, OMG...so yummy. Thank you G for telling me what to order. We actually both ordered the picture that was on the wall above our booth. You know how usually unprofessional photos of food look soo unappetizing...well, this picture looked delicious and it was! I don't remember the name, but it was the charbroiled pork and shrimp on the vermicelli...so damn yummy. I ate just about that whole bowl which I had no business doing. Bonus...it really is just like this dish I used to get all the time in college in DC, at Vietnam Georgetown. I've been to Saigon Cafe so many times since freshman year I've lost count. And there is a clear reason why I return: the pho. So honestly, I'm not really good at discerning the difference between good and bad pho. Couple of people around me have said the pho at saigon's not that great but personally, I totally dig the broth. Great hangover food. However, the other entree dishes have never amazed me. This was Faux Vietnamese. Pun intended. And when I say that I don't mean that there was a lovely French influence. I ordered my favorite dish, the rice noodles with spring rolls and grilled meats (yum) Bun Cha Gio (as its called in SF). They gave me duck rather than chicken, which was nice at first. Then I tasted it. Something about the meal was off. I felt sick at the end. I also ordered a taro milk tea with tapioca- the tapioca wasn't cooked. The sauce for the dish was not flavorful. There was no shredded carrot and no pepper or fish sauce in it. This was not good food. I need a better closer Vietnamese place, PLEASE don't make me go back there. read more

Do NOT go here if you are Gluten Free!!! So I have gone there a few times because it is the closest Vietnamese to my apartment, and my hubs loves the Pho. Eventho he is not wild about this place. Today I went to this place and asked for a sauteed Basil tofu plus chicken, in white clear sauce to prevent gluten. The waiter was very nice in explaining that the dish will still have some small amt of gluten. I was shocked! But mentioned I have had it like that before with no GI issue. (I realize now it was another place). But I did have a sauce free sauteed dish that was very good (I think it is their veggie dish) with no issue. C'hall don't you know it was plain o'le garlic sauce from chinese, so you know it was sauce time all in that place. I sent it back. While I was waiting my "tom yum" soup came....with CHICKEN in it. I have never had Tom Yum with chicken in it. There were some gently cooked breast in the soup that got it gently cooked chicken flavor all in the soup. It was gross...Im sorry it was not eaten. The waiter mentioned that there was an option on the menu and if I do not specify chicken is brought to the table. Yes I did not realize that, but jeeze let me know when Im ordering. My food finally came... it was delicious in a commercial chinese way, but had NO BASIL in BASIL dish. I just asked for some Basil, some raw basil was brought to the table. I love basil but I was like jeeze...again, maybe take the plate back and cook the meal IDK. I meal was good with the white sauce in it that I am pretty sure is gluten free, but I notice RED GARLIC flakes in the meal, and the the eggplant was still kind brown. I ate half the plate not really realizing conclusively, that my meal was washed off and recooked. Yes my stomach is bloated and killing me hours later. I did taste my husband Pho broth it was ok, just ok. There is very little authentic flavor/smell/looks to all of the food. Sure, it's not "authentic" vietnamese food in the strictest sense- just like most Chinese restaurants aren't 100% authentic. If you are looking for that, don't go to a chain. Amazing pho. Good bubble tea. I can never complain about the food here, however, there are much better pho places on Buford Highway. Service, however, was terrible. Mediocre at best. I understand that this is a "cafe", therefore the service is allowed to be a bit lax compared to the fine dining (RA anyone?). However, service here is absolutely abominable. First of all, the hostess seemed like she was too good to seat us. She threw the menus down on a booth and walked away without saying a word. Then the server we had did NOT utter a single word the whole time we were there until he brought us the check. As he brought out the large bowl of pho, he almost spilled the hot soup on me, as anyone know, pho soup is boiling hot b/c it's required to cook the beef slices in there. Luckily my friend, who was with me at the time, stepped in and took the bowl from him. Or else I would've gone to the nearest hospital with burns. Of course, no apologies from the server. Whatever. At least the food was decent. If you are looking for decent pho without going down to Buford Highway, go here. This place is literally my last resort for pho craving. We came here twice for lunch. The first time, the hostess was extremely rude. She never looked at us once while she took our order. When she came back with the food, she just placed it down, didn't say a word, and left. She never came back to refill our drinks for the rest of the meal. I was so turned off by that experience, I never wanted to come back again. However, we were in the area again , and wanted Thai, so we came in for a quick bite. The server this time was very friendly. My husband had a pho, which he said was so-so, and I had the chicken pad thai. It was like biting into a sugary-noodle-ball. Pad thai should be a simple and flavorful dish, seasoned with great asian ingredients. The number one ingredient is definitely not sugar, but that was all I could taste. We have been coming here for lunch and getting takeout for years. While the food is consistently very good, the service has gotten absolutely HORRIBLE. From orders being incorrect or even not placed at all (while another person at the table has their food for 10+ minutes) to making my wife wait for a high chair for our youngest (and finally go get it herself). After today, we won't be dining with you any more. Sorry, Saigon Cafe, but you finally broke us today with making us wait yet again for over 20 minutes for our check while our 2 young kids slowly lose their patience. Tom kha chicken soup was overly salty...wish there were a couple tofu cubes in it though. Penang curry was alright...chicken was plentiful and well cooked, but the veggies, mostly green beans for veggies, which were a little overdone. I love this place! I'm a huge fan of fresh vegetables and they have so many dishes with great fresh veggie varieties. Many Asian places have gloppy food with frozen ingredients--not this place and that's why I love it. I recommend the eggplant with tofu dish or one of the curries! Five star bubble tea - get it! Though many people sit down you can easily order a boba tea to go: $2.75 for a small which includes 50 cents for the tapioca. One dollar extra for a large. Sometimes the servers wear got bubble tea? shirts! The bubble tea is worth a five-star restaurant review. Four point five star curries - their lunch combos are a great deal for about $6.50. Their Thai curries have a lot of depth: I have been to Thailand so I can compare. Rama curry is delicious here. Mild is almost medium spicy so spicy probably shows no mercy! Four point star Chinese food - lots of sauce and very colorful dishes Three point star Vietnamese bun noodle dish - no cilantro and super fishy vinegar? Super fatty barbecued chicken. About $9 One point five star fried rice. Yellow dyed-looking rice with egg? Even though it is mostly a Vietnamese restaurant, I think their Thai dishes are better. I first tried bubble tea for the first time at this location close to Emory over three years ago. No other bubble tea has been this good - in China or all along the West Coast. Their tapioca is fresh and is coated with syrup so it almost like maple syrup tasting. The pearls are small and soft. Awesome. Love the peach black tea. Get it and the Thai curries. read more

Anyway, taste is very consistent. Basically, You come here for a quick Asian fix when Buford hwy is just too far away for you. So why only 1 star, you ask? Well, I havent been there in a while, but my friend and I decided to have some Saigon this past Sunday for kicks. HUGE MISTAKE. Approximately 12-18 hours later, I was glued to the toilet, begging the heavens to end my misery. About 2-3 hours after I started throwing up, the friend I went to Saigon with also started throwing up. Saigon was the only meal we shared together the day prior. You don't have to be an epidemiologist to put two and two together.. we definitely got FOOD POISONING FROM SAIGON CAFE in decatur. I've finally recovered, but i'm still unsure as to whether it was an isolated norovirus incident (which puts the blame on Saigon for not properly sanitizing), or if it were an E.Coli incident (which still puts the blame on Saigon for not properly handling food).
