Out of this world in an out of this world place. My friend and I were doing a road trip and were looking for some great food. She heard that this place had trout so we made a reservation here on the very day. They were very accommodating. The hotel in which the restaurant is located was beautiful and the artwork in the restaurant was very unique. The food and wine were excellent and our waitress was so friendly and knowledgeable. When we left, we both said that if we ever get up that way, we'd definitely eat there again. read more

Visited restaurant Tuesday evening at 6 for dinner. We saw one couple eating inside and two outside. The hostess informed us that they were closed to the public for some event. No signage posting this event only the menu. We are locals and have eaten here before without issues. Found another restaurant that was happy to take our money. read more

Good food. I'll pay for it. It's service that needs training and the automatic 20% tip for parties at 6 or above. Our waitress was inattentive, poured old opened wine, wouldn't clear plates in a timely manner or refill drinks. Business was slow. she should have hovered over us, but too much absent. She wasn't busy with other tables to where she was busting her butt, just lazy. I gave her my automatic 20% tip because demanded upon the menu by the business owners. Maybe that's the problem, she knew that's what she would get no matter the service. Maybe it's a training issue. Same waitress use to work at Axe & Rose and she has not stepped up her game. $440 for party of 6. Show us you care at all times. I shouldn't have to as for refills or to brew Ice Tea. read more

We don't live in McCloud. For another meal at Sage, we would go out of our way to return. We felt the meals were delicious, and (as a bonus) were underpriced. Service: Excellent! We ate at Sage a few years ago and loved it but we had Thanksgiving this year and it was terrible! we were so disappointed. the food was extremely tasteless and served by someone who was clearly not a regular staff member. the apple pie was literally cold and the apples seemed like they came from a can. The visual presentation of all of the main course of beef was incredibly unappealing. The whole process of check in was terribly unprofessional and slip shod. After being close for over two years since the pandemic hit, Sage Restaurant inside the charming McCloud Hotel officially reopened on May 18th. Even though it was Friday the 13th, luck was on our side with a soft opening for hotel guests and a last-minute addition of a fresh Columbia River Steelhead with wild mushrooms, spring peas, pine nuts, and farro to the menu. So phenomenal, I reconsidered my dinner plans for a possible repeat the following day which in retrospect, I regretted not doing. Because it is situated right in and off the lobby, iif it is busy season, you may have some traffic going by the table as inn guests travel to and from their rooms if you are seated in the lobby area tables. Reservations are highly recommended for this small, intimate restaurant filled with antiques and charming decor. We recently dropped in for an early dinner and were tempted by several items on the menu, such as fresh trout with Bearnaise sauce, creamy polenta with wild mushrooms and Swiss chard, prime rib, and pasta. The menu had entrees for vegans and meat-eaters alike. The food was expertly prepared and delightfully fresh. In addition to great food, the service was quiet and attentive. With so many of the local restaurants cutting corners with meals, service, and atmosphere, Sage Restaurant is a cut above the others. It is a very pleasant place to have dinner. read more

What a great find! We were staying at the McCloud RV resort. I didn't want to cook dinner. Unfortunately their patio was closed because it was so hot outside. We had our pups with us. Do they let us order to go. It was fabulous!! We had - polenta with collard greens and wild mushrooms, hamachi crudo, black cod , and French radishes and butter- this made me so excited because I have only had these in France! First night in McCloud, we were at our hotel (no restaurant) and hungry. Walked across to Sage (lovely linen tablecloth, silver cutlery, great china) and the two of us were able to get a table without a reservation (staff were super). We ordered a glass of white Riesling (the dry), which didn't quite hit the mark. Our two appetizers- the crab cakes and a beet carpaccio watermelon pistachio dish, did. Both were *very* nice (the crab cakes were a bit overdone on one side, but the inside was incredible). Mains were another story. The Moroccan chicken, in place of a Ras El Hanout rubbed and marinated meat with onions, apricots, dates, figs, olives and toasted almond bits - seemed to be in a sauce without any of the bits or much of the spice. The couscous was the big pearl type rather than the lighter/fluffier moroccan. Worse, though, it was completely covered with arugula - a *lot* of arugula. I thought they'd brought me a salad. :( My husband got the rainbow trout that was breaded and very plain (fish schnitzel, really), and while the accompanying potatoes were very nice - the green beans were tough. Anyhow, one star for the excellent staff, one star for the appetizers, and one for the ambiance. If I was to return, I'd get the Osso Buco - the main next to us absolutely could not stop raving about how excellent it was. read more

The food and ambiance at Sage were excellent. Service as well. The bread appetizer was amazing with a balsamic/oil and pistachio dipping sauce. The salads were really good, my partner and I shared the beet salad on our first visit and the ceasar on our second visit. Also had the trout which was fabulous. I really loved this place. The food was amazing and they had plenty vegetarian options. It was vegan friendly as well. The vibe was peaceful, warm, fancy, and a little spooky! The service was great. The woman who took care of us was lovely. The cooks/chef clearly care a lot about the food and the presentation. I thought the food was plated really nicely. We live in Mccloud and do not recommend Sage mainly based on their poor service. We've eaten here several times and the food is decent, however they are more of a restaurant of their convenience than they are of a restaurant for business. When you call you get a voicemail that says walk ins are welcome, website says the same thing. Very rude host, if you wait long enough for them to show up. Two thumbs down. read more

We ordered a filet medium rare. It came well done. When it was sent back they brought it back raw. Instead of fixing it to the customer satisfaction, they just told us the chef paid for it and didn't offer to correct it any further. Needless to say, I didn't get a meal because the chef doesn't know how to cook a steak!! I'm very disappointed. My husband ordered the fish. That's all he ate. The farro and asparagus were undercooked and inedible. The only thing we did eat and enjoyed were the appetizers. The bread and the mushroom polenta. The service was not friendly. We felt like they were tired and didn't want to be bothered with good customer service. Pretty sad experience. We have been here many times before and have always loved it. Despite the charming turn of the century decor this was the worst meal I have ever had in a restaurant. The salad and dessert was ok but the shepherds pie was awful. Not like any I have ever had before. Tasteless and covered over with a strong herb it had absolutely no taste. Maybe it was frozen for too long. Beautifully and tastefully done, Sage! Cannot say enough good about this hidden gem in the sleepy town of McCloud. The outside seating really sets the bar high. Surrounded by blooming flowers and mountain air, you get to enjoy some high end dining. We ordered a couple different appetizers, and they did not disappoint as they were perfectly paired with summer. The entrees were plated with care, and it definitely showed. Start off by saying the ambiance was beautiful. We really wanted to love this place. Unfortunately the food was very underwhelming. My wife ordered the lamb. The server stated she won't need a steak knife since it is so tender. She was wrong. The lamb had a blackened crust that required my steak knife to get thru. The potatoes also had a thick, blackened crust. Inside, they were completely dried out and inedible. My daughter's ordered the fish. It was undercooked and overcooked at the same time. Her rice was undercooked and also inedible. My filet was cooked fine, although it had a surprising lack of taste. A little bit of salt fixed that problem. If you want a fine meal in the area, try Cafe Maddalena in Dunsmuir. read more

No kids menu, so we ordered the pasta and they made it with butter and cheese for the kids but it was maybe a little too bland. Black cod was good, and so was the broccolini. Terrible service. We waited 45 mins for our appetizer. Our appetizer and salad came out at the same time. 5 mins later the entrees came. We sent them back so we could enjoy the appetizer and salad. The waitress became rude and blamed the chef. She became passive aggressive the rest of the evening. She acted as though it was our fault. So much for customer service! Well done, waitress who raved she was born and raised in McCloud. Try a different restaurant. This is the only restaurant in McCloud that I have experienced as rude and marginal. Whdn you screw up, it is better to take responsibility than blame it on your customer or chef! read more

My husband and I enjoyed a fabulous dinner here this evening. We shared the fennel, cress & strawberry salad, roasted mushrooms with mascarpone polenta & sautéed Swiss chard, and roasted chicken breast with fennel, cherry tomatoes, olives, in a wonderful broth. The food is fresh, locally sourced, & seasonal, & handled superbly by the chef. The service (unfortunately, I don't remember her name) was stellar: helping us modify our order a bit to accommodate my diet, answering our questions re the ingredients, and totally affable. In addition to this wonderful restaurant, the Art Deco style McCloud Hotel, is lovely. Don't miss this! read more

Then the waitress told us the restaurant was going to be full because of reservations and gave us the worst table. No one else ever came in. The service continued to be negligent throughout our meal. We went to Sage, again, for my birthday celebration given our great experience last time. I have to say, this place continues to impress, and I think my entree was better than the last time! There was a slight misstep with our wine order, but that happens and certainly not a big deal. The amuse Bouche did exactly what it is designed to do -- fig based, and YUMMY. We then had a Caesar salad which, in truth, was not too exciting -- the dressing had too much garlic and we had a difference of opinion on the anchovy (I liked it, my dining companion didn't). I would say, less garlic in the dressing and more anchovies -- in the dressing and on the salad. Our dining companions both had the French onion soup and commented at how excellent it was. For the main, I had the salmon (prepared differently this time) and my partner had the lamb. One word: Outstanding -- in presentation, preparation, and execution. Dinner was followed with surprisingly good coffee (something of a rarity even at good restaurants). We ordered the chocolate tart, which they unfortunately ran out of, so they comped an alternative dessert. That was unnecessary but certainly generous as we would have bought the alternate dessert. After we started eating our substitute dessert, our host staff came by and let us know that the chef was able to create one last serving of the original chocolate tart dessert -- which was truly excellent and very thoughtful and accommodating. And, now service you would get at most any other restaurant even of this caliber. At this point, we are convinced that Chef Cliff (I think that's his name) and Sage Restaurant is the best fine dining option in Siskiyou County. If anyone knows of another, better place, let me know! read more
