Took my wife here at around 6 pm. The place was empty besides us. It was decorated nicely with authentic pieces and cloth. They start by giving you a jug of water to refill your cups, which I do love, but it made the water taste like iron. Our waiter was great and attended to our table anytime we needed anything. We ended up trying a variety of items (mixed vegetable pakora, coconut chicken curry, garlic naan, tandoori roti, and a mango lassi). As far as the food, I did not really enjoy anything my wife chose. The pakora was not flavorful, and the roti was too dense and bland. However, I thoroughly enjoyed my food. Everything tasted amazing, and the lassi was such a treat. The food also came out very quickly and is a huge portion. Enough for two to three meals. Although I believed the restaurant seemed expensive at first, I truly think it is worth it, as this is the best indian resturant in town. read more

Upon arrival we were courteously received and invited to choose our own seating. We settled into a comfortable, well-kept booth. The dining room itself is largely tidy, though the walls show the occasional chip in the paint--an imperfect but far from distracting detail beside an otherwise pleasant table. Water arrived in a crystal carafe, poured into copper chalices: a thoughtful and attractive touch. Menus followed. As first-time visitors we would have welcomed photographic guidance; the absence of images left us momentarily at sea. Once we confessed our unfamiliarity, however, our server proved exemplary--patiently translating the offerings and clarifying the distinctions among dishes. That guidance was invaluable. The drink list itself is less successful. The type is small and faded, rendering it difficult to decipher. It offers the expected spectrum--signature cocktails, standard spirits, a handful of traditional Indian preparations, and the usual non-alcoholic options of Pepsi products and tea. We ordered a yogurt-based Indian beverage that proved, for our palates at least, thoroughly off-putting; we could not finish it. My unsweetened tea fared little better: thin, faintly skunky, and lacking the depth of a proper brew. One could see through the liquid in the glass--hardly the robust, dark infusion one hopes for. The shared starter, Shrimp 65, delivered more consistently. The shrimp were of respectable size and carried a lively, well-integrated spice mixture that flattered rather than obscured their natural flavor. A faint aftertaste of tired oil lingered once the initial spice bloom faded, yet the accompanying green chutney more than compensated. Complex, earthy, and intriguing, it played beautifully against the seasoned shrimp. Presentation was classically restrained: a simple bed of slaw and fresh herbs providing color and contrast without pretension. The Andhra Curry arrived next and proved the evening's most compelling discovery. Ordered on impulse for its promised heat, the dish revealed a far more nuanced character: layered spices that refuse to be isolated, a gentle creeping warmth rather than aggressive fire, and tender, moist chicken that retained its own flavor. Served with well-cooked rice, it is a plate I would order again without hesitation. Chicken Tikka Masala, by contrast, is the safer classic--and executed with quiet confidence. A rich, velvety sauce of genuine complexity cloaked generous pieces of chicken. Ordered mild, it carried little heat yet lost nothing in depth. Paired again with excellent rice, it remains an ideal introduction for the hesitant diner and another dish I would gladly revisit. Among the breads, the butter naan stood out: lightly crusted yet airy within, sturdy enough to scoop curry yet fragrant enough to enjoy alone. The subtle buttery finish elevates it further. The poori (or bhatura) offered a different pleasure--light, puffed, and faintly reminiscent of an unsweetened funnel cake. Its airy structure absorbs sauce beautifully while remaining crisp. The aloo paratha, stuffed with potato, proved denser and more ponderous. The texture is exactly as advertised, yet among the three it felt least complementary to the evening's selections and is the one I would be least inclined to reorder. In sum, the kitchen's strengths--particularly in the curries and the more successful breads--outweigh the occasional missteps in beverage and minor kitchen details. I will definitely be coming back here. First time did not disappoint. I started with samosas and a passion fruit mule. Recommend both. Then chicken tikka masala (spicy). Came with rice and I had garlic naan. Spice level was perfect. Flavor spot on. Rich and creamy sauce. I ate way too much but the food was so good I couldn't stop. I will now dive in to other dishes. This was seemingly the pick of several Indian restaurants in the area. They had a conventional menu and a separate dosa (savory crepe) menu, which they did not offer me for some reason I could not understand, given that someone else ordered one so clearly the crepes were on offer. That being said, I preferred to order an okra dish, and I was not disappointed. The spice mix included whole cardamom pods and dried chili, and probably quite a lot else. And my soupy okra in a tomato and onion base being ordered here in the deep south led my mind to wonder if I was eating gumbo for a moment before the spices kicked in. Ordering a samosa chaat was also a wise decision. The samosa is of course in and of itself a classic, but the chaat offers a surprise in every bite. Are you going to get some mint sauce? A fresh bit of tomato? A coating of fried noodles? It's good regardless. The menu offered clear vegan choices and plenty of options even though they stiffed me on the dosas. I was a bit taken aback by the check. Don't get me wrong, the food was good, but I know what to expect from an Indian restaurant in the region and this was well more than I would have paid for the same sort of meal in Augusta or Atlanta. The decor feels like a restaurant in India. The vegetable samosas were fabulous - crispy and piping hot! Always enjoy the mix of the green chile chutney and the tamarind chutney. This is the best Indian cuisine I've had in a while. The setting was nice & clean. The dishes & utensils were clean. The water was clean. The mango Lassi was great. The food tasted awesome. The lamb shank was fall off the bone. The butter chicken was delicious especially with the garlic Naan. The spaghetti with chicken was also really good. The samosas seemed a lil over priced but when I bit into it, the texture was perfect so I couldn't complain. I just wished they put meat in it. But everything was great. The service was amazing. We were really surprised when our son who is at Fort Benning brought us to this Indian restaurant in Columbus, Georgia. The restaurant is nicely decorated and the waiter was very pleasant. We ordered Samosa Chaat and Onion Bhajia for appetizers. They came out nice and hot and the portions were really large. We were almost full after the appetizers. Nonetheless, we ordered Paneer Dosa, Saag paneer, Goat curry and Saffron chicken curry. All curries came with basmati rice. We also ordered garlic naan and bullet naan. Me and my husband give this restaurant a 10! From the moment you walk the host and waiter are so friendly. The food was so good and they brought it out very quickly! We ordered garlic naan and samosas to start and it came out within 3 mins. My husband ordered a Mango Lassi and it's one of the best mango smoothies we've ever had. My Mom and I visited yesterday evening to have dinner and the food and service were AMAZING! The restaurant looks beautiful inside and soft traditional Indian music was playing in the restaurant. I ordered Tandoori Chicken (it came with basmati rice) with mint chutney sauce and raita sauce (yogurt based sauce). My Mom ordered Chicken Chettinadu, which also came with basmati rice. We both enjoyed our meals which were delicious and very fresh. For dessert we ordered the homemade mango ice cream. It was like eating a very juicy and ripe mango in ice cream form. I've eaten at the buffet here a few times now and had some of their menu dishes delivered and so far I love this place. I would say there are some items I prefer at Taste of India over this restaurant, and some I prefer from Saffron over Taste of India. I'm just happy to have more Indian food options in Columbus because it is my favorite type of food. This is definitely a restaurant worth trying out! Competition is fierce, as they are all within a five-minute drive from each other. Before we talk about the food, let's discuss the experience. It's a multi-part journey when dining at one of these places' buffets. I believe only two of the three offer a buffet service. The first part is the eating, which always lasts at least an hour and involves many trips to and from the buffet and dining table. Following this is what I call the "pregnancy phase" . Not to get political, but if you love Indian food as much as I do, even a man can get a baby bump. These two phases are subsequently followed by the food coma phase, the most dangerous phase. This phase usually begins towards the latter half of your ride home, so it's a bit of a battle. Make sure you allocate plenty of time for napping, as you'll need about a 2-3 hour nap. The last phase, which varies for each individual and can last literal days, is determined by how well you handle spice. Let's just say you may be taking many trips to the restroom and doom-scrolling to pass the time and the movements. For those local that like Indian food, please find your way to Saffron and keep them in business! Support a locally owned and operated, always friendly and accommodating staff and much tastier food than other current Indian options IMHO. We eat at Saffron about once or twice a month, and our favorite time to go is lunch for their buffet, although they offer a full menu as well. Walking past the aromatic climbing jasmine as we enter and smiling at the staff as they prepare our usual drinks without us having to say a word (they remember our preferences), and getting to the food within a minute or two of entering (for the buffet at least) always sets the mood for a good meal. They switch a few things in the buffet up here and there while generally keeping some staples that everyone likes. If this is your first time trying Indian, the chicken tikka masala is always a safe bet and what most Americans prefer. I like to try a little bit of many things personally but my husband sticks with this tasty dish. They try to keep a close eye on the buffet to refresh things as they get low, but if anything runs out or gets old one can remedy it with a simple request within minutes. They have plenty of different items to cater to everyone, but if you like Mexican sopapillas you cannot pass up their Bhatura! I mean their Naan is great with any curry of course, but often times if we have enough room in our bellies, we will sit and dip bhatura in curry or - if your tastebuds are ready for mouthwatering - into their Semiya Payasam which is a sweet, soupy dessert. A piece of fresh bhatura dipped in this warm dessert with flavor reminiscent of milk-and-honey will have your eyes rolling back in delight and tingles going through you. If that wasn't enough, the home-made mango ice cream can be the cherry on top! If you're adventurous and mix the ice cream with the semiya payasam, you get a bit of a mango lassi combination that soothes any heat from the curries and settles you in for a nice food coma. read more

Today was my second time at Saffron and both times I have been pleased! First and foremost, I love that the employees are not forced to wear masks. (I'm not sure what the owners rules are regarding masks, but there were employees not wearing them and this makes me HAPPY! I am much more likely to return places where employees have a choice.) I love the atmosphere in this restaurant! It's very bright and welcoming. They usually have music playing, but it's not so loud that you can't hear people talking. They did a great job with decorating and they don't seat people right beside others during slower times so there's plenty of space. The employees have all been very nice and observant. They noticed when we were out of drink and when we needed more rice. The food is extremely good! I get aloo gobi at every Indian restaurant because who doesn't love potatoes and cauliflower?! I get mild spice, which still has a kick but it's not unbearable. The spices in the aloo gobi are on point! The portion was perfect! Tonight my mom got the vegetable fried rice, which was delicious and a HUGE portion! She will be able to have two more meals from it alone. I like to stick with garlic naan. (I wish Saffron had the Indian cheese naan because I like to add the garlic topping to it - I'm not sure the cheese name. They do have a cheddar garlic naan though.)
