Saffron is not your run of the mill florist. Their floral designs are special and seasonal and inspired. They did our wedding flowers and we were thrilled. We loved their aesthetic, so we left the arrangements/bouquets up to them. They had some challenging circumstances to work with. We found them only about 1 month before our wedding. Hurricane Sandy destroyed our wedding venue and we only knew a week before the wedding that they could fix everything on time. On such short notice and without knowing the venue, they did an amazing job. They didn't balk at our low budget and found really creative ways to bring everything together. I went here a few months ago looking for something unique and handmade to buy my girlfriend for her birthday. It is a very tiny store, and, without an obvious awning, easy to overlook. They have a small but eclectic selection of clothing, jewelry and flower arrangements. They also play host to local artists, using their space as a mini-gallery. I ended up buying a really nice pair of earrings from a designer in Oklahoma, and they lady behind the desk even gave me a free bouquet of flowers to give to my girlfriend! The store is thoughtfully, playfully curated, with frequently arriving new items (jewelry, vintage knicknacks, etc). The flowers/plants are beautiful and unusual. And, most important, the owners (husband and wife) couldn't be friendlier or better at their jobs. They'll assemble you a bouquet better than any you could have done yourself; they'll give you the backstory to a work of art on the walls; they'll chat with you about whatever. I cannot speak to the floral arrangements but I bought a small succulent from the shop, which looked healthy in the store. It was a fairly small plant and cost $18, which is expensive but it was a plant that I had been specifically looking for. By the time I got it home later that day, I noticed the soil was very wet and some of the leaves of the succulent had turned dark green and mushy. Also, some small gnats were flying out of the soil, which in my experience is a red flag for overwatering/root rot. Not really sure what to do, I didn't touch the plant for a few days to see if the soil would dry out. Web-like mold(?) started to grow on the soil after a cpl days and more gnats. Most of the leaves and stems rotted after a few days and most of the plant has completely shriveled and died by now, with brown rotten stems and mushy leaves. I paid in cash and didn't get a receipt so I didn't feel comfortable attempting to bring it back to the store, so I cut off the one remaining stem that wasn't brown and am trying to root it in new soil. Living in California, I had no idea who to call for a floral arrangement in Brooklyn. Based on the Yelp reviews, I called Saffron to help me put together an arrangement for my cousin who just lost her mother. I didn't have any specific flowers in mind but Kana made some suggestions that just sounded perfect for the occasion. While trying to figure out whether someone would be home for delivery today, I found out that my cousin had just returned from the memorial, was wiped out, and her husband was leaving town. What I really wanted was to send a meal! I asked Kana and we decided that cheese and crackers with a bottle of wine with the flowers would be perfect. Saffron is an awesome, little local shop who every few weeks showcases something new--handmade jewelry, vintage housewares, and an amazing selection of cut flowers that go beyond the ordinary. Although I had never bought anything from the shop, I went in on a whim one day and asked if they do wedding arrangements. About 7 months later I'm married and couldn't be happier with what Tetsuji and Kana created for our Brooklyn wedding: Interesting and elegant table arrangements that quietly showcase the unique combinations (shapes, textures, colors) that make up the arrangement (I hate arrangements that are so packed and predictable, there's nothing to appreciate). They also did a beautiful job with the bouquets (for the bride and my informal wedding party) and boutonnieres, again with nice finishing touches like berries on the boutonnieres. The other part I loved about working with them is that throughout the process they were receptive and flexible to working together to create a(n affordable) shared idea for the day.
