Literally only go here as a last resort and when I need something in a hurry. Not only are they overpriced but overall customer service is sorely lacking. Today I walked in to turn my daughter's coins into cash at Coinstar. Purchased a couple of items and took my voucher to the register. Young lady calls for customer service...5 minutes, 10 minutes,... I ask her if anyone is coming. No one knows. This is a Saturday at 11am. No help. Not only do I not want to return but now I'm forced to because I can't redeem the voucher elsewhere. Such an odd visit to this location. The store is a little outdated compared to other stores in the area. I came as I was already in the area, to redeem my winnings from some scratch off tickets I had purchased. There was no one and I mean no one at the Customer Service desk to assist. After asking several different employees if anyone was working the desk, one was kind enough to get on the overhead speaker system and call for assistance and well as activate a recoding that kept playing saying that assistance was needed at the customer service desk. Fast forward about 6 minutes later. Once the young lady arrived and she was very pleasant and kind and asked how she could assist. I handed her the scratch offs, she scans them and such and tells me how much my winnings are and then asks for my ID. Hmmm, okay, pause - as long as I've scratching off VA Lottery tickets I have never and I repeat NEVER been asked for my ID. Not never once, ever. I inquired as to why it was necessary and she advised she had only been at that location for about 4 months and it was a first for her as well but in order for me to receive my winnings, she had to scan the back of my ID. I asked if maybe they had a issue with fraud and that's why the extra measure was required and she advised she was not aware. No knock to her at all, she was great and I fully understand she was just doing her job. Needless to say, if this the case and protocol for this location, it would be nice and customer friendly if they had some sort of sign posted to indicate such and allows customers to decide if that's something they want to partake in before the tickers are redeemed on their machine so you have the option to go elsewhere. I cannot say I'd be back otherwise, the inside needs some sprucing up and it is a tad bit stinky when you walk in the door from the start. read more

Great variety and helpful staff when there's any confusion on self checkout. They'll pull up a cart and load into it if they have the staff and you need the help in the regular lanes. Not sure why the stars are low for the average, Lidl nearby is great value but just doesn't have the variety / specialty items & I prefer a 1 stop shop. During my last stride around the Safeway in Lakeridge, I didn't find anything out of the norm for a big chain store. I went on Sunday afternoon, I'm guessing the majority of people got their groceries in the morning, or at least that what I could tell by the way the displays looked. Very small location and you could tell by the way that things were crammed together in the hallway. The hot bar was empty and didn't have much selection, which was a disappointment for me as i was looking for something to bring back with my case. Overall the service was good from the cashiers, I didn't interact much with the floor staff they didn't look too approachable and just were minding their own business. This has to be one of the most expensive grocery stores in Woodbridge. Which is crazy when it seems like there are never more than 5 or 6 employees there at a time. Staff is indifferent. They can be nice or they can be rude. It's hit or miss. They've STILL have no cart return in their parking lot so you end up playing a game of dodge cart when trying to park. They did a complete redo of their selection and moved everything to make it more convenient for us and now I can't find anything without walking up and down the store 3 times. And of course, you won't be able to find one of the 5 or 6 employees to help you find something. This is probably one of my least favorite Safeway locations. Its not because the location is dirty, or the store looks bad, it just doesn't have a good selection. Every time I go in there, I cannot find a few items on my list. This store is only good for the basics, and they may not have the brand you prefer. For example, I went in there looking for Ortega or Old El Paso taco shells one time. They only had Mission on the shelf. I went in there looking for liquid smoke and Dales steak marinate this past weekend...NO Where to be Found...WTH! read more

How anyone could give this store a five star rating is beyond me. Even a three star review is far more than they deserve. First and foremost, this store is old and dirty. Think of most Safeways you've been to - clean, modern, brightly lit. Now imagine the exact opposite of that and you have this store. In addition, the deli staff are pretty rude. In fact, every employee seems like they are given no incentive to care and thus don't. Next, there's only ever one cashier working here, so even though there's only a few shoppers there's always going to be a line. Next, the store has a pretty limited selection compared to other grocery stores. Want to use automated checkout? Maybe get some coffee? You picked the wrong store, bub. And finally, there's almost always some charity table set up outside with pushy volunteers. I don't mind once in awhile donating but I don't want to have to run through a gauntlet of the hard sell or be a jerk and ignore them when I'm just trying to grab some milk or something quick to run home and make dinner after work. All of these reasons are why even though I live right next to this Safeway within walking distance, I'd rather inch along Old Bridge Road in rush hour traffic to visit the Giant or Food Lion than go here. (Full disclosure, in all fairness the one check out clerk has always been nice to me. Also the produce appears fresh and not rotten. Also I've never been stabbed in this store. This is not my grocer of choice however it does fulfill our needs when we just need to run up to the store. Its the best and probably the only grocer within 2-3 mile of my home. I do agree with the other reviewer that the store is a bit confusing and seems disorganized however they always have what I need when I need it. Just recently had a brunch at my home and ordered fried chicken from the deli. Mr. Wendell was very helpful and very accommodating. The staff back in the Deli and Bakery are outstanding. I visit several times a week because it's right across from the commuter lot and closest to my apartment. I wish there was something else, honestly. Produce is rarely great. I've been in so many times when zucchini was about 5 inches long and bruised and cut to hell. And they weren't even put on sale... Good luck finding good avocados or full sized tomatoes. Meat section doesn't even usually carry fresh wings. I always have to buy the frozen wings. The ONE time they did, I was looking for a whole chicken and they didn't have a whole chicken. A grocer. Didn't have. A whole chicken. I also like bones and they don't carry any bones at all to make stock with. Decent gluten free section, I have to admit. Employees are very friendly and courteous. Nelly, the cashier went above and beyond and introduced us to the safeway app, told us their coupon doubling policy, gas rewards program, & even shared a stavk of coupons with us from her own personal wallet! She was so kind and help ful. Love their $5.00 friday deals! Manager was super professional when we had a pricing glitch....end up being MY FAULT yet he still wanted to give me the discount. I don't go to this Safeway often because the food is very overpriced compared to many of other grocery stores in the area. I often have found the staff to be rude as well, so each time I go there I brace myself for poor treatment, which is not true of any store I have been anywhere. I almost never write poor reviews. Today against my better judgement, I stopped to pick up a few things. I have been recovering from being ill and this store is very close by. There were 2 lanes open, one of which was express (15 items or less). I looked at my cart and it looked to me to be about 15 items. I didn't count because I've never been to any store that expects that. As Carrel is ringing up my items she says,"I guess everyone is in a hurry today." I ignore this because I don't know what she means; I thought maybe she could tell I wanted to be back home in bed recovering. Then when she finishes she says,"This is an express lane." I look at my receipt and see that I purchased 19 items. I admittedly made a rather sarcastic reply and she made some sort of response confirming that going over the express limit by 4 items was a great offense. This wasn't an isolated incident; this is typical behavior for employees at this store. I will not be returning to this Safeway; it is a good place to shop if you like high prices, poor selection, and rude workers. read more

I think I just have been racially profiled by Jay (he said he was store manager). Tried to buy a gift card using my debt card and Jay wanted me to show him my id before he would run the transaction. I refused. Never have I been required to show id when using my debt card. Debt cards have a pin. That is the reason you don't need to show id when using them, but Jay wants me to show id. Took the kids in here last night (28 Aug 2018) and as we came through the Deli dept, we encountered two male employees complaining very LOUDLY about their jobs, complaining that they only received so many hours, and dropping F bomb after F bomb after F bomb! I tend to avoid this place if possible. We have several other grocery stores in the area (Aldi's, Giant, Wegmans, or the nicer Safeway further down the road) that we prefer to shop at, but this store is in a good location and useful if you need to pick up one or two things quickly. It isn't nearly as clean as the other stores mentioned above...well, except for Aldi's. I'll say this, I've never had weirder, more uncomfortable interactions with an employee at any grocery store than I have here with an older woman, I want to say her name is Carol or Carril or something like that. The first time was when I bought a single item and paid with a $20, the only bill I had in my wallet. She was nice enough to inform me that it "wasn't very nice of me" to pay with that...I guess she doesn't like making change. The second time occurred months later when I declined to donate $1 to Easter Seals or breast cancer or whichever promotion they were running at the time, and she paused in the middle of our transaction to give me a dirty look when I said no. Because that's going to change my mind. Sadly, she always seemed to be working the Express lane, which I started avoiding, even though I never shopped here for more than an item or two at a time, but I was willing to spend the extra time in line to avoid dealing with this woman, she just seemed to have a poor disposition for customer service. I haven't seen her in awhile, maybe she retired or got canned, I don't know. Even if she wasn't there anymore, this still wouldn't be a regular destination for my family, it's not clean and there are better stores in the area. Out of all the grocery chains in Woodbridge, Safeway is my favorite, as they have the most variety. However, in regards to this one particular location, (as someone stated) this is not my store of choice, but it gets the job done. In all actuality, I would recommend driving the 2-3 miles to the Safeway on the other end of Lakeridge at Merchant's Plaza. Some positives: -They have pretty decent sales always going on. -Behind the deli case, you can always find some kind of meat on clearance at 50% off. -If you ask them for something, the store will usually order it for you and have it available the next time you come in. -It reminds of the older grocery stores back when I was a kid. -The Redbox at this location has a slightly better selection of mainstream films and lesser known films. -There is a decent variety of stores surrounding it such as an ABC, Taco Bell, McDonald's, Burger King, Statements Hair Salon, Dry Cleaner, CVS, Exxon, a mini library, etc. etc. I can pretty much get everything I need to get done at this one shopping center. Negatives: -It is old. It reminds me of the older grocery stores back when I was a kid. Both a - and a +. -They shut off the second entrance in the store. -Not as large of a selection as other Safeway's, b/c this location is smaller then others. -It used to be that Safeway would ask you if you needed help with your groceries, getting them in your car. This is the worst Safeway I've ever been to. Takets Mill is supposedly about to do a renovation. It's time to update this store or move out! It's one of the few grocery stores for the Lake Ridge neighborhood and people would rather travel across town to Wegmens even to get just a few things. Safeway, why have you neglected this store?
