Harris Teeter falls somewhere between the fancy level of a Wegmans and the basic level of a Safeway. Prices can be a bit high but the quality tends to match. There is a good selection of produce, prepared foods, packaged goods, beer and wine, and boxed staples. I've had some good-quality red meat from this store. This store is big, bright, and clean. It's got a huge free parking garage underneath that is well lit. I try to sneak out midday to avoid crowds when I shop here. It's easy to use the self checkout and be out of the store and on your way. The in-store Starbucks is pretty good--I like to grab a drink before I leave.

You might miss this sign for the new Harris Teeter on King Street. Set back off the street and only facing eastbound King Street traffic.

This store recently opened on King Street between I-395 and Beauregard St in Alexandria. It is another of their growing trend in locations that are part of mixed commercial and residential developments. The store caters to singles, couples, and smaller families. Parking for the store is in the garage underneath and is accessed from King Street. They have an extremely large beer and wine section and carry smaller sized containers of product in frozen and canned foods. As a convenience to local workers, they're hot food, salad bar, sandwich counter and pizza shop are all located in one corner of the store and have two self-checkout registers for a quick lunch trip. A cashier was standing by to assist anyone who needed help. Just like other Harris Teeter stores they feature boars head brand deli products and have finally gotten their rep to put slicing guides on the display cases so it is easier to ask for the thickness of sliced items that one desires. Getting the deli clerk to cut that slice is another issue as both persons at the counter when I visited were relatively new and did not have the experience to understand the thickness requested. I am sure as time goes on and as more senior employees have time to provide better training the deli department will improve. The produce, meat and fish I'll work fresh and well stocked. Plenty of staff was on hand to answer questions like why did Harris Teeter discontinue Sabbret's hot dogs? The answer I got was that: "Only people in New York know what a Sabbret's hot dog is and that no one around here buys them." Just One problem with that answer is that I know what they are and I'm from around here and I would like to buy them. Evidently the corporation is made up their mind and won't be carrying that brand in the Washington Metropolitan area. Overall, a shiny new Harris Teeter store with opening staff still hanging around to get customers in the door and try to keep them. But for the most part as good as any other local Harris Teeter in the area.

I like Harris Teeter so I may be biased. I stopped by one early Wednesday morning to pick up a few things. The store was fully stocked and it was an enjoyable shopping experience because it was before 7 AM so there are no crowds. They have a parking garage that is free. I think HT is on the pricier side, but I can find everything I need so it is convenient. I have only been in this store once, but I will be back.

Of course I called first to the location closest to me. They didn't have it. But, they told me the PY location had it. When I arrived, I was able to easily find help in the form of a team member. She walked with me to make sure I found what I was looking for. I also received additional assistance and recommendations from another team member who was very helpful. He provided great information about the wine I was looking for plus some additional recommendations. Although there is a closer TW&M location, I will be returning to this one because of the positive experience. Happy sipping.

Very disappointing experience at the Total Wine in, Potomac Yard, Alexandria…read more The cashier refused my purchase because my daughter, who was shopping separately, was not immediately present to show ID. By the time my daughter came to the checkout, the situation had already escalated, and we left without buying anything. The cashier handled this poorly, and the response was rigid, dismissive, and unprofessional, and the manager did nothing to resolve the situation. This created an uncomfortable and embarrassing situation for my family, which should never happen during a simple purchase. What's most concerning is how inconsistent and unclear this policy is. If a family of adults come in together, are they required to check out together? Customers should not be forced to guess the rules at checkout or denied service based on arbitrary judgment. This experience reflects very poorly on store management and customer service.

FSG is sandwiched between One Good Tern Wild Bird store and Simply Fish restaurant in an odd layout of a strip mall off Quaker and Braddock in Alexandria. They have a vast selection of wines, ports, cheeses, caviar, and breads. What keeps us going back, and a lot of our friends talk about this, too, is that there is not a hint of pretention there. The owners are so very helpful, patient and kind. The prices are also comparable to bigger stores and chains. And, of course, they do generous case discounts. We normally buy cases of the Le Petit Duc La Porte (glad I'm typing it because I can't pronounce it) and we get a better price at Fern Street Gourmet than what they're selling it for at Whole Foods. Off-street parking is almost always available here. I know they do tastings, too, but have never been to one. If you're looking for a nice pairing for a special dinner or holiday meal but don't want to feel looked down upon like in some other wine joints, check out Fern Street. Clare, from Tallula wine bar, works here part-time, too, and really knows her stuff.

The deli counter is definitely one of them. I went to Harris Teeter today looking for a different shopping experience than what I do every single week. Sadly,I didn't get it. Their produce department is absolutely beautiful. All of their shelves are well stalked and organized and staff in and around the deli area is beyond my expectation. The problem is with all that staff in the deli area , there's not a single person that wants to get behind that counter and cut your deli meats. Today I waited nine minutes with all manner of deli staff walking around me, and actually ignoring me from behind the deli counter. (I'll add that its not the first time) They may have figured out that I'm a Yelp reviewer, because the "manager" came over and offered herself to help me with my deli order - which by this time was too little too late. By comparison, I went to the meat and fish counter, where the minute I walked up, somebody was right there offering assistance, telling me to ask for them if I decided that I needed any help. Far cry from being ignored just a few feet away. Suggest cutting the dead weight in the deli. Staffing looks great on paper, but not in practice. There are 3 places at a grocery store where you actually need human help, deli, meat counter and cashier. If you want 66% then this is the store for you.
