This store is the most convenient for us to shop at for our week trips in Bodega Bay. The store is nice and clean; however, the bathroom is absolutely disgusting. It is dirty and there is profanity written all over the back of the door which is very upsetting when you have a child to take in there. It's also frustrating that it is the only bathroom in the store, so the line backs up quickly. Staff are pleasant. While the food selection is great, the prices are just ridiculous. read more

Extremely disappointed with the produce at Safeway. This has become a consistent problem every time I shop here. The fruit is often overripe, soggy, sticky, leaking, and covered in mold. You can barely pick up a peach without it practically falling apart in your hands. And it's not just the peaches, other fruits and vegetables are showing the same signs of being old and spoiled. What's even worse is that the produce is leaking fluids all over the displays and contaminating the surrounding fruits and vegetables. I've seen mold on produce that is literally sitting next to other items that are being sold at full price. How is this acceptable? If the produce is visibly spoiled, moldy, leaking, and clearly going bad, why is it still on the shelves with a price tag on it? Customers should not have to dig through rotten produce just to find something fresh enough to buy. Safeway seriously needs to do better with checking, rotating, and maintaining its produce section. The prices are comically gouged under the guise of them saying that they are actually much more expensive but they posted prices are sales prices. Inflation is one thing and gouging is another. Safeway is great for National products and brands like we use for laundry soap, toilet paper, can goods, & imported pastas. The availability the prices, the hours of operation, and the parking lot all make it easier and a great value for those items. We tend to go to smaller stores for meats cheeses, breads, and produce. However my local butcher at a smaller store got my order wrong twice recently and I decided to head over to Safeway. My goodness what a great experience. As a loyal Safeway customer, who frequents this store 2-3 times a week even though my partner refuses to step in here, claiming it's the "Devil Store". I always defended my choice. I can't defend my choice any longer. Over the years, the customer service has drastically declined. The deli is hit or miss. They are always out of their sliced French Bread in the afternoon. I know it's good, but come on. The cashiers all seem to be uptight and miserable. Even had a creeper who would always make inappropriate comments. Okay, I get it, people need jobs. So, I just let it go. But what happened this past Saturday, was not forgivable and actually a bit terrifying. The fact I reported this to corporate with a promise for call back or email, which was never fulfilled has forced me to make this public. Rebekah was the cashier. I had two separate transactions. The first was a 6 pk 20 oz, diet Dr. Pepper. Total came to $8. I made a comment of wow! $8 and she responded that with CRV it was expensive. I agree but it wasn't for me and I wasn't paying for it, and told her I was glad I didn't drink soda. As she was ringing up the second transaction. We were talking about how things are so expensive and it's tough right now for many. It was pleasant small talk as far as I was concerned. As I was paying and my items were being bagged by an older, tall man, I told her, I hope things will get better soon. Her response, "not until he is Shot". I was taken a back as I thought to myself, I must have misheard her, do I said "Pardon?" She repeated herself, "Until he is Shot"! I was horrified on what I had just heard. I knew who she is was talking about. As a moderate conservative in a liberal town, I am used to people having opposing political views and some who want to do harm, but someone who deals with the public to say a statement like that to a stranger is appalling. The fact that she promotes deadly violence to anyone is horrifying. The fact that Safeway doesn't appear to contact me says a lot about their leadership. I purchased a sandwich at the deli counter yesterday. When I got it home the lettuce on it was all wilted and gross looking. I had to throw it out. I asked for egg salad sandwich, which is on the order board. But was told they were out of it. The glass area above where the sandwich items are kept had so much dust on it you could hardly see the food items below. The entire area where sandwiches are made needs to be cleaned. There was also food crumbs/pieces between the glass and the area around the case. I feel like I wasted my $9.00 on a sub standard item. read more

What's up with Safeway selling condoms? Are they really that hot an item for shoplifters? Is it a new political thing to restrict access? Curious minds really want to know! So now all condoms are behind a locked cabinet, and there is a button that we need to press to get help. Either one of two options will then occur: A) Someone from customer service will come up sheepishly to unlock the door. We saw that this Safeway had 2 stars on Yelp, and thought "How is this possible? It's Safeway!" But then we went inside and it suddenly made sense. The store is kept very very cold. Not just the freezer aisles and produce. The entire store. Not very comfortable for shopping, so we rushed through the aisles to keep our body temperatures above arctic. Then we visited the bathroom, and...let's just say it's a 1-star bathroom. Messy floor, messy toilet, messy sink, grimy surfaces, all the works. Asst. manager says they're working on it and points to small sign on entry with smaller type warning against using a cart with a specific type of wheel. Sebastopol Safeway I give no stars at all. On Wednesday April 1st I shopped for distilled water. This was during COVID 19 Shelter in Place. While I was standing in line for check out the checker was having a personal conversation that was lasting more the 15 minutes. When it was my turn for check out the checker point blank asked me if my distilled water was my only item and I stated that it was. She then laid into with upmost disrespect and proceeded to tell me that it was important for her to listen to the lady she was checking out for 15 minutes. I said to her that this was a time where none of us need to be anywhere but she had put me at risk. That we are to do our business and leave and not linger. Ugh! She was so rude. The girl (manager) of Starbucks is a real piece of work. I have complained to the manager Heath several times about her. She's still a piece of work. Saturday April 4th, I stopped in to grab a cup of coffee and as usual there was some problem with Starbucks and there was no coffee to be had. The boy/man at the counter also had an attitude. I have been shopping at this store for 28 years. In the last few years it has really declined. Recently I was shopping for a dinner a party and had a full cart. When I wnt to the front there were five people with full carts and no checkers other the 15 item or less lane. I could not use the self service because I had wine and liquor. I went to the customer service desk and asked why no checkers and she said they were probably on break. I asked when they would be back and all she said was " probably soon". One guy finally showed up and was very surly. I don't know what is going on at this store but several times the checker and the bag person have talk about how much they hate working at this store right in front of me! This review mainly reflects upon the deli. I've found other parts of the store to be perfectly adequate. Don't order a sandwich from this location; the deli workers have apparently never made one before. They screw up things I didn't even know it was possible to screw up and their ingredients are totally sub-standard. The lettuce was completely wilted and the dutch crunch was soft and mealy; it had obviously been left in the open air for quite some time. Since covid began, I have heard soooo many reports about Safeway not monitoring mask wearing. I do use the Safeway pharmacy (they will always get 5 stars-they are the best pharmacy in Seb).... Today I go in to pick up a present. It wasn't ready so I did a tiny shop and used self checkout-no problem. Then I go to the Starbucks in there. Two woman jumped right in front of me-their masks pulled down. The very young, new cashier said nothing. So I just took care of me and stood a decent distance. Then a homeless guy comes up behind me-zero mask. A manager acting woman approached and gave a mask. She walked quickly away-I called out to her. She ignored me-no way could she not have heard me. Next thing I knew....there were all these people at the Starbucks-everyone with their masks pulled all the way down. I'm immunocomprimised-one more thing will kill me. Thawed definitely are breakthru cases with vaccinated people-especially for people with my diseases. So finally I'm done there and go stand in line in the pharmacy-a exact repeat of Starbucks experience. Woman in front of me-her mask pulled all the way down. So I again stood 10' back. She wanted to engage-I simply explained I'm immunocomprimised (no offense)....she said she was a nurse, blah blah. Whatever-I don't care I just want out. Then a mature man comes up behind me-mask pulled down. Really???? So I walked away again-we're all in triangle shape. Now he's actually offended-because I'm taking care of myself. He starts harassing me. The woman in front starts engaging again-walks right up to show me some religious card-saying in fake syrupy voice how she'll pray for me. She kept trying to touch me. I told her to stop-dont touch me. She proceeds to go up to the man and they talk about all the crazies out there. So I could hear., I ignored. I was shaking when I left. I've called Safeway headquarters maybe a year ago to ask their policy-they never returned my call. One year. At home I called a handyman who offered to help-he said he and his wife live across the street and they avoid Safeway like a plague. No wonder. Smart people. I just don't want to stop using Safeway pharmacy because they are so professional, friendly, and on top of it. Safeway officially sucks. Well, it's been 19 days since this incident happened at the Sebastopol Safeway deli. 19 days since I left a polite complaint with their guest services, and 19 days that I have waited for even acknowledgement from a manager, with no luck. So here goes. On 7/11/20, my fiancé and I ran to Safeway to pickup a few things, and get coffee. While he shopped, I was in line at the deli. An older man, with salt and pepper hair, glasses and a thick accent helped me at the counter. Glancing down at my shirt that read, "FEMINIST AF", he asks me, "Do you really consider yourself a feminist?" "I absolutely do," I replied, "We all should be." "Hmph," he shook his head. "Not me, I'm anti-feminist." What? I looked around and waited for the 'just kidding' to follow. "A woman should be in the kitchen," he said. "Doing the domestic things. Raise the family. Do woman things. You know, I read many good articles online about it, you should look it up," he advised, without solicitation. "Yeah, I'm definitely not going to do that," I said, honestly feeling bewildered. Is this Sebastopol, in year 2020? Are you kidding me? He shrugged his shoulders and mumbled something about not understanding "why women have to feel empowered about everything". I silently took my sandwiches and walked away, trying to dissect what the heck just happened. I went to meet my fiancé in another line and my blood boiled. Every possible snarky response I could have replied with ran through my head. He couldn't believe it either. He offered to go to talk to the guy about it but I didn't want to make a scene, even though we probably should have. I simmered and stewed for a bit and then called the store back to leave this information with someone who said she would inform the manager. And I am NEVER one to do that sort thing. But it is the right thing to do. It reminded me that there are so so so many different things happening in the world right now, so many movements, so many opportunities much bigger than my run-in with this fool at the deli, for us to speak up about what is right and fair and just, and speak out against the many different systems of oppression. And it is imperative to find, and use that voice within ourselves to correct and educate others. I won't be going back there at all. Ever. And I will encourage others to do the same. read more

My wife stopped in the store yesterday to pick up formula for our baby. When she asked for assistance, a woman working in the checkout lane in front of the baby aisle rudely and aggressively told her to "go push the button!" next to the formula case. As this employee should know, the button next to the formula case is no longer there. Instead of apologizing for her own ignorance, she instead called over a man to help and when he asked who needed help, the woman motioned to my wife and screamed "Her! With the ATTITUDE!" The only "attitude" my wife conveyed to the employee was to simply ask where the button she referenced actually was. (Again, it doesn't exist anymore). So not only does this employee not know the basic functions of her own store, she thinks it's wise to deride a customer, yelling at a new mom trying to buy food for her child, in front of other shoppers. Our family has roots in Sebastopol going back over 80 years and we have patronized this store more times than can ever be counted. Got a birthday cake for my son and I keep trying to give the bakery business. Worst cake ever. All I tasted was the sugar. I got a chocolate cake. No chocolate flavor. Just way over sweet. Customer service at check out is usually stressful. The checkers and bag assistants ignore the customer while the carry on a typically loud personal conversation. This happens nearly every time I go to this Safeway. Also, I asked an employee who was re-shelving items where something was and they told me they didn't know and walked away. I once asked a checker at check out how to use their digital coupon system and he said (rudely) "I don't know" and told me to ask someone else. Convenient store location with ample parking. Stopped in here to buy some seafood and found exactly what I wanted, though when I bought the 50% off fish I noticed later the cashier had not peeled back/off the 50% off sticker so I think I paid full price... it was cheap fish for feeding to animals so I wasn't too disappointed but that could have been a bigger deal on a fancier cut. The store is clean and well lit, with a good selection of stuff on the shelves. All the typical grocery store items from foods, baking supplies, wines, meats, produce and frozen stuff to cleaning supplies, basic pet foods and personal hygiene. I'd stop here again. read more

Parking here is never a problem and the carts are usually ok. I don't understand the need for Safeways to never put a customer restroom in the customer area but this might just be something I am used to from the east coast. It may not be close to the best Safeway I have ever seen but there isn't much choice when you live in Occidental. The produce is always well stocked and fresh and it isn't as crowded as the ones in Santa Rosa. I love the app and getting coupons with gas rewards. Its the best priced market around when you are comparing it to Fiesta and Whole Foods. read more

I love our Safeway. I use the just for u and I love getting the extra discounts. We have three grocery stores in town. Whole foods is great for some things, cheese, vitamins, stuff you can't find at the other two. Lucky Market... I like the checkers, but I find it more expensive and harder to find what you need.... Safeway has great flowers, good produce--including my fav gourmet mushrooms, fresh bread, a decent deli and better prices than both other stores. My kids used to order the best deli sandwich I have ever had. I think it is called the heart attack (invented by Analy football players so no other Safeway knows what it is). This Safeway has improved since the pandemic, and I felt I should update my review on it. First of all, they really have a good florist, who can help you with special days or even casual ones. A lot of people don't think about them on a florist level but the girl put together a nice assortment for me economically and it went over well. Second of all, they have fresh delicious donuts and danishes! It's a really good assortment, jelly donuts, Boston cream, chocolate croissants, and you'd be surprised how happy somebody would be if you brought 1dozen over to their house! If you use the Safeway app you can really save a lot of money and get things on sale, today the donuts were $.79 on sale for example! They have also stepped up their game with their O organic line. And I am not vegan but they have a fair selection in the produce section. I can also tell you that I have really enjoyed the salmon I have purchased. Again you have to use the app to get the best deals, sometimes you can get some thing that's already on sale for even half that price, if you scan the barcode with the app, don't be lazy, I saved $24 today on my hundred dollar shop, that's basically 1/4 of my groceries were free because of the app. And last but not least the Starbucks, it is not as good as a regular Starbucks but it's pretty close and it's conveniently located inside the store, you have to understand that supermarkets have a lot of turnover when it comes to young people, so that's just going to happen anywhere, but the older people, one of them have been there many years, or a lot more experience and helpful. The pharmacy is the cheapest in the entire county if you use the GoodRx app. Some of the medication's I buy that are not on my insurance are less than $10 with the GoodRx app. The Safeway price is cheaper than all the others in the area. So that's also a well-kept secret. If you use the app and good RX it's cheaper than Walmart or Costco for hundreds of prescriptions. And finally, the self check out has a lot of stations and are super easy to use. That's all I have to say, they are not perfect but they have really come a long way since Covid and they are better than they used to be. I think that corporate is definitely trying to step up their game, to be more competitive. I would put them on top of Lucky's for sure, or Fircrest or Pacific market (although Pacific market has recently been acquired by a company that owns a dozen stores according to someone at the coffee shop). So they are the best game in town, I'm not going to compare them to Whole Foods because that's a very different kind of operation. They certainly do not deserve five stars but they are trying, I would say the deli section is still pretty weak, but if you really want good buffalo wings, they are fairly impressive. The parking lot is definitely better than most, it has a lot of different entrances and exits throughout, so regardless of where you're going, that's helpful.. at the end of the day, you have to really bother them if some thing you want is out of stock, so that they go in the back and look for it, but 50% of the time they will find you some, it's up to you to really make it happen, even if you have to annoy them. I don't know if this is a bonus but they have a brand new lottery machine, it's a big improvement because the customer service desk is not always well attended, and with a huge powerball jackpots, the line can be long, but the new machines are really high tech, you can even claim your numbers several days or weeks ahead once you figure out the touchscreen. So if you're one of those people that buys a lottery ticket, you can be sure this is the best game in town. I don't have any reason to be swayed by Safeway they are a giant chain, but my experience is a lot better than it used to be. A corporate supermarket is never going to be perfect but I will tell you they are also giving out the flu vaccine and the new Covid that covers omicron and ba5 etc., at the pharmacy and it's not the most convenient location of the store, but they have several pharmacists working there so someone will get to you. All in all, there is no other place in Sebastopol that offers all of these things in one location. I am not affiliated with them in anyway, but they are worth the visit. Again remember to use the new updated app on your smart phone and you will save a lot of money, but the best part is not what song sale, the app already knows what you buy, and next week it will give you a sale on some of those items that are not posted, and that's going to add up to a lot more than a lot more than you think. read more

I tried to switch to this pharmacy but after they have messed up my medication order the last 4 months strait I will never go to any Safeway ever agin. The customer service is the worst I've ever seen. The short hair lady with gray hair that works the pharmacy window is incredibly rude and it seems like everything something goes wrong she is there. I asked to see a store manager when I had problems once agin. She told me the manager was gone till the next day when in fact there was a manager there.
