I'll update this if I visit again. For now, this review is based on my visit Wednesday, May 29, 2019, at approximately 4pm. The store seemed well tended to. I did not use the restrooms. It was clean and the carts were corralled. All departments seemed clean and well organized. I don't usually noticed employee interactions much, I generally smile and say "Hi" and go on my way. I needed help in Produce and noticed 2 employees busy stocking. As they walked past customers they didn't make eye contact or acknowledge people. They seemed rather dour. I figured they were under deadlines and just found what I needed myself. I went to the self-check out line and what a fiasco! My first item wouldn't ring up and they blond attendant came and helped me without a smile or pleasant attitude. She walked away and the issue immediately happened again. She came back and did her thing. I questioned her about some markdown items and she answered my questions acting irritated. I asked her if she would stay while I rang up the next. She said it would work and walked off. It. Did. Not. Ring. Up! By this time the lady was visiting with a friend (or maybe a customer). I tried to get her attention again (this is the 3rd time now the register isn't working), but no, she's too busy visiting. Apparently her chatty conversation was more important than helping customers. I guess she's around 45-50 years old, old enough to know how to pleasantly interact with people! Another lady noticed I needed help came over and put in her code and rang the item up. I asked her to stay and she started heading off with a quick "It'll work now", I immediately tried to ring something up and it Did. Not. Work. She turned and said let me carry your things to a full service register and he will be able to ring you up a lot quicker. I appreciated her help. There was only one person in line and the male cashier finished ringing his order up quickly. Then he immediately started to ring mine, however, the other customer's items weren't bagged so ours started to merge right away! I thought the cashier would stop, but nope. He kept ringing things up. The other customer quickly grabbed some bags and bagged up about 3 full bags of groceries. I asked the customers if it's normal to bag your own groceries here and he rolled his eyes and said "Don't get me started on this guy (meaning the cashier), and no. It's not normal". I had to reach around the credit/debit card reader to bag my own groceries because clearly he wasn't going to. The cashier never spoke to me. It was the oddest thing! Usually the sign of good manager is happy employees. Based on this one visit only I can only assume either the management is lacking and this is a very unpleasant work environment or the 3 floor staff I interacted with are very unhappy people and perhaps shouldn't be in customer service. 10.13.2020 Around 6:15 pm Whoa! This place is awful. The actual level of grossness extends way beyond the poor sanitation efforts into both the awfulness of the staff and the horrific clientele. There are NEVER enough staff on. Even though it is tried and true that around 5:30 pm, all the proletariat are heading over to their local gross-cer to buy stuff for dinner. There are literally, never more than 5 people working. The staff at the deli are so frigging rude and awful, I have no words. There was a man working at the deli, who literally yelled at me for asking for stuff. First, they all ignore you and then after you wait and ask for assistance, they get mad. I asked that ass___ to give me half a pound of turkey and he directed me to the pre-shaved packages. Doesn't matter that none of them where 1/2 pound increments. I see the deli staff openly eating in the back, shoving food in their mouths and then coming to the front of the counters and touching food etc. SO DISGUSTING. DELI STAFF ARE HORRENDOUS. I am of course going to the health department on that. Yesterday, a man is walking through the store, merrily shopping with no mask. Of course there are NO STAFF walking around so no one to tell him that he needs to leave. Then , there is the issue of people leaving their carts as place holders to continue shopping because the lines are so long. Well, I see a cart with stuff in it and I push it to the side as I take my place in line. A lady comes back and approaches me by saying " Hey, I am in line!". I responded that her cart may have been in line, but she wasn't. Anyway, this "Karen" proceeds to block me out of the way and I left, I mean, it is worth it berating an older lady? When I walked away, she proceeded to curse at me. If staff had been around, perhaps this would not be the case but of course there is no one around at Safeway. There are a meager handful of employees - I kid you not - probably no more than 3 staff on, every time I have been in. This place is disgraceful. Earlier this week I spoke on the telephone with a woman in the floral department who assured me that they can make red rose bridal bouquets, no problem. "Oh yes, they range in price from $50 on up, we could certainly do that, not a problem..." Very sweet & helpful. She doesn't work Fridays though, and that's when I went in to take a look. The two working there said that they will be too busy this summer to do a bridal bouquet. They told me to go to a slower Safeway, maybe Guernville. I left, got into my car and then thought.. hmm... maybe they thought I meant something other than what I just said (one bridal bouquet) So, I went back in to make sure that they understand I'm NOT talking about boutonniere, corsages, bridal party bouquets, table flowers AND a bridal bouquet, but that what I am really talking about is 2-3 dozen red roses tied together with ribbon. I stress how low-key I am about this and how I really do just want something simple... OH! Yes, we can do that. In the summer we have all flowers here because we get everything from South America. But we're not guaranteeing that we will have dark roses just..."here!!" And we're NOT special ordering you anything because it WON'T be worth it to us. Your order is too small. The Safeway in Sebastopol is definitely the worst Safeway I've ever been to. Long lines with slow checkers and no baggers, dirty carts and cart area, and they don't have any of those small maneuverable carts that all the other Safeway is due. I avoid it and. Will continue to do so until they clean up their act. read more

Be sure to check expiration dates on every dairy, refrigerated item and produce selection in this Safeway. Empty shelves and cases are often seen as they are not restocked on a timely basis. I have never written a review before. I am writing this review simply to Say, HIRE MORE PEOPLE SAFEWAY! One checker at night isn't cutting it. The only reason I'm not giving 1 star is because I came in earlier today with a cart full of groceries and the day time checker, pretty girl with glasses and tattoos... Monica I believe was her name got my groceries checked and bagged in under 5 minutes, fastest checker I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. I returned tonight because I forgot to buy milk, one item, one single item expecting to be in and out in less than 5 minutes. This Safeway is generally pretty busy at lunch time and dinner, so avoid avoid avoid! I always go in the later evenings or early mornings just to make it less stressful on myself. The produce at Safeway is less than stellar. I do grab stuff here, but It's not top grade, so keep that in mind. They do however have awesome sales on pasta goods, and other dry/canned items. In general keep your eyes out for good sales with your club card. Service here is pretty good. I've never had horrible service, but some checkers are on the grumpy side. Let's talk milk shall we? Every now and then, the wife asks me to venture out to the store to pick up some good ol milk. I smile and drive a few miles to the nearest Safeway to purchase some. This has been a weekly routine of ours for a few months now. Nothing too crazy until three weeks ago when "Oh no!" Someone must have dropped a gallon of milk in the dairy refrigerator. I said a prayer for their loss and kept it movin'. A week later, ya boy was back on milk duty. I opened the dairy refrigerator door only to see the milk still spilled on the floor. I assumed that the mop bandit must have hit Safeway and they were just waiting for a new shipment of mops. The next week, milk time. I walk in, open the door and am hit with what can only be described as the smell of old cat vomit that has been left in the Analy boy's locker room since 2003. I froze, gagged a little, grabbed my milk, and told a store employee very kindly of this horrible atrocity. "Oh wow!" She exclaimed, "Thank you so much for telling me! I'll definitely make sure that gets cleaned up." I then left, feeling as though I did my public duty of the day. This week, you already know what time it is. Back at it again to pick up the milk. This is when I was hit viciously with the smell that is 3 week old spilled milk. They say not to cry over spilled milk so I decided to rant over it. How no employee has grown a pair and cleaned it up is beyond me. If no employee can smell it, then I worry deeply for your five senses. The deli at the Safeway in Sebastopol is always understaffed. On 12/10/2020 at about 3:10 pm only one clerk to serve at all sections of the deli. When I arrived at the deli the clerk was helping one customer. As I am waiting another five showed up. He then starts helping people who approached the counter after me instead of asking who was here first. And he knew I was next. Management is no help. Safeway needs to get it together. For a large corporate business they can do better. read more

Also 'cause it's like the only affordable source of food in Sebastopol except for the McDonalds and Subway they have hidden at the south end of town. The restroom situation at this one blows my mind, you actually go back through the stock area with all the inventory lying around. Good little shopping area, with a Whole Foods down & across the street. Really tough parking lot to pull out of during busy traffic times. Might have to throw some hand grenades to make a left turn. Employees were friendly and helpful. Contains typical Safeway grocery items. Really the most economical place to grocery shop in Sebastopol. Using their rewards card is a must for better prices. Also, recently used my rewards card at the pump the other day and saved 20¢ a gallon....Whaaaat! That made my day, especially since gas prices are already down. I'm not a bit surprised this place has a really low rating on yelp. Few months back my brother and I went to get our usual bottle of wine from this store. We have purchased several bottles of wines during the weekends over the years. This specific night we went to the self check out and Paige was the cashier ringing us up. I greeted her and she gave me this dirty look and attitude. She immediately asked me for my ID and I gave it to her since I was buying the bottle of wine. She then looked at my brother and asked him for his ID. I questioned her why does she need his ID when I'm the one buying the alcohol. Keep in mind we both are over 25. Personally she seemed racist because my brother and I are of color. She couldn't give me a good explanation and proceeded to tell me you can go buy somewhere else. So I called her out and told her she was a "b$&@$". I then took my bottle and went to the next cashier named Jayne and she refused to run me up. Jayne who was too stupid to think logically for herself decided to side with her coworker. She knows who we are and have been serving us for months now. August 4, 2020. That's it, I'm done with the Sebastopol Safeway. Even before the pandemic I found that the checkers were becoming unfriendly and rude. I'm not saying all of them are discourteous but enough of them to make me decide to shop elsewhere. Without going into my last unpleasant encounter I have come to the conclusion it's either poor management or the pay is so low that the employees don't care if they lose their jobs. It's New Years Day, I went to the deli for 3 sandwiches. The employee who greeted me was an older woman who made it painfully clear she was unhappy to be helping me. She was so short that I changed my order and told her to just make all 3 sandwiches the same way, apparently this was a problem as well. The sandwiches I got were literally crumpled together and barely edible and I ended up throwing out half of mine. I guess I shouldn't have asked for avocado because that was the majority of what I received, I had to wipe it off and it still permeated every bite. Easily the worst sandwiches my family and I have ever had. Safeway, do not force employees to work holidays if they don't volunteer to as they show it in the way they work. Apparently additional pay is not incentive enough for them to do good work and they will lose you customers. Never coming back. Should've gone to Pacific Market and you should too. The actual store part is normal and fine from what I see but it's the sandwich deli that pisses me off. I go there weekly to get sandwichs after school and if there are three people in line be prepared to wait 45 minutes before you even get to start. There service is REALLY slow and they have like 3 people behind the counter. 2 out of the 3 of them are really rude and dont be surprised if you find a hair in your sandwich (just saying). They fumble around with stuff and put barely anything in your 5 dollar sandwich. What makes me laugh, is one time when an old women serving us gave us half a piece of cheese and when we asked to add more she said it would be another dollar. So the fourth of July weekend my friends and I headed to Sebastopol to a camp. Its a nice, decent, and quiet lil town. We made a stop at this Safeway to buy water and snacks for our camp stay! We bought sodas, cheese, fruits, water and CHIPS! As I was getting ready to pay the nice cashier told me and my girls (about 7 girls aged 16-25) that we had to buy the same size and same brand of chips to get the discount on the Safeway card....mind you these are girls overly excited to be away for the weekend with their friends, and they couldnt hear her because of their own noise and excitment they grabbed another bag of chips, when the cashier had to repeat herself....BUT THIS IS WHERE IT GETS UGLY ...the BAG BOY or BAG MAN, "WHISPERED" to the cashier..."they don't speak English"...to what I replied..."Excuse me?...what did you just say? ...we do speak English" ...his name is MARQUIST or MARKIQUIST OR something closed to the grapefruit soda SQUIRT!!! to which he replied...."ohh...I am talking about something else..." really! really? sure, at least have the guts to tell me you are racist even though you are also a MINORITY in the US....well lucky him I wasn't in a bad mood, I also had to be an example to my friends and not lower myself to the his level to tell him off plus we were in a rush that I didn't have time to complaint to the manager.... the one thing I did like about this Safeway is that they do not discriminate against, disabled people and they have MarSquirt working here! If you want to wait in line for 10 minutes EVERY time you come in, have discourteous cashiers who do nothing but talk to each other, and end up at home with expired product (by 3 years!!) then shop here! The produce guy and customer service manager are always friendly, but that's about the only good thing about this Safeway. Of the many supermarkets in the small town, Safeway has the BEST staff by far, produce department offers many choices organic and poisoned/GMO (and cheaper than the "designer markets" -Community Market, Whole Foods, and Pacific Market. Fircrest is out of town and expensive but nice produce. Meat dept- Safeway cheaper than all, for the most part, although Luckys is better. I am an aged foodie on a budget, and retired from dealing with the public, so I also value the human experience, and here Safeway really has it over the others. Also, the parking lot IS for Safeway but many other stores benefit from its comparative amplitude, and they allow fundraisers / petition signers on site.... My advice, get quality food and fantastic customer service at Whole Foods across the street. I haven't had any problems with the employees. That have always been very helpful. My compliant has to do with the deli specifically the sandwich counter. I've ordered sandwiches several times and each time they've been so-so but the last couple of times has done me in. When I ordered a specialty sandwich off the board I had to tell the deli person what went into the sandwich. They should know or have a cheat sheet to guide them instead of asking the customer what goes into the sandwich. Also, as my sandwich was being made this person kept smashing the cheese, onions, etc. into the bread. I have to say my sandwich was pretty flat by the time he was done. One last thing is how slow they are at making the sandwiches. I've ordered sandwiches at other stores and never have to wait as long as I have at Safeway. I spent about 20 minutes at least with 2 other people in front of me. Needless to say I'm done with their sandwiches. It's not worth my time or money. Constance (not sure what her job title is because she was definitely not doing her job) is a nasty beyach. Only one check stand open with a line so I decided to use self-check. Of course eventually the machine didn't like something and alerted "help is on the way" with a light on above it. Three female employees were chatting together at self check, paying NO attention to customers or their surroundings, and additional employees walked by. Eventually Constance came over and was clearly angry that I was attempting to continue to ring up my items (sorry I'm not getting paid to check my own items and didn't want to wait around for a lazy employee). I mentioned something about her and her co-workers being too busy talking to help. She stopped, turned to me and said "what"? How dare I call her out?! When she fixed the machine she turned and stood in my face as if she deserved a freaking medal. Of course the machine stopped working again, so I stood and waited there. After a minute she said, "oh, do you need help". I said, "it says here that help is on the way". She said, "well you could get my attention and ask for help". Ok, let me do your job for you. Open some freaking check stands Safeway and tell your employees to get the stick out of their rear! read more

I have had none of some other reviewers experiences at this Safeway. I go between 6 and 10 am and, at that time, there is ample parking. I have introduced myself to the employees and have learned their names and they ask me, by name, how I'm doing and I, in turn do the same. It's all in how you treat people - you want better service, be nice. The shelves are well stocked and I have had even the assistant manager help me find something. The Just4U app and coupons have saved me up to 53%! As for long checkout lines, take the opportunity to say something nice to the person in front of you. I have started up many time-consuming conversations this way and the line moves along without frustration. A perk: There is a Starbucks on site and they make great beverages and, yes, I know the Barristas and one of them always says, "goodbye" as I leave, even if I have not visited them. Rethink your view of this store location and give it another try, go in with a positive attitude, stay off your phone, keep the kids in control, and say, "hello" to the employees and, you'll have a good experience. read more

I get a kick out of the reviews of those from much bigger towns complaining about the selection, lack of a huge beer isle or crappy parking. It's a small town and this store has been here since it was a TINY town. I know because I have been here for decades myself. If you want a certain beer for your trip maybe you should buy it before you head out. Just saying. I shop here because it has the things I need, it's been local for as long as I can remember and I have never been treated rude. Then again I haven't been rude to them which sometimes plays into things. Been shopping here since the seventies and have never had a problem personally.
