They have exotic brands from around the world along with rare and older brands that the big box grocery stores don't carry. I don't know how they do it, but the quality and freshness of the vegetables and perishables are top notch given such variety. We used to shop at Whole Foods in Monterey, and we like the small specialty shops like Elroy's in Monterey and Jerome's Carmel Valley Market, but Star Market is a combination of both worlds. Whole Foods has gotten corporate with an overemphasis on their own brands. Star Market doesn't really have their brand so they are extremely loyal to local brands which makes the shopping experience feel like a tour of Monterey County highlights. I also like the very practical way they're running their business. Few frills, very clean, and high quality. In fact, it feels very nostalgic to walk in, like a movie set from the 1970's which makes me feel that this is still a family owned and run business. If you're looking for a truly unique experience that is different from the Albertsons/Lucky/Safeway/Nob Hill sameness, then you have to do yourself a favor and visit Star Market. Talked to my co-worker and he to got sick. That pretty much assured me that I (we) got some bad chicken. I do want to add this as well. I am a former Chef and as I was standing in line I did notice some not so great food handling. Mainly what I noticed was the cashier was working with food then touching the register back n forth. I know they have a lot of turnover at lunch but that's no excuse to serve food in that way. My whole weekend was ruined and I still don't feel well. Yes, SIX!!! I came for 4, but ended up buying extras because they cost only $2 each and were warm and freshly made. (The Asian in me can't resist a good deal!) I will say staff can sometimes be hard to find outside of the checkout area. So if you are having some trouble finding an item, you might be on your own. But when you do interact with staff, they are friendly and helpful. I just wish there were more of them working the aisles. Parking lot is a bit iffy. It's busy and people often park really poorly either taking up 2 spots or parking so off to the side that you'll have trouble getting in/out of your car. But honestly, this Smart & Final is a great resource for your bulk item needs. Especially if you come early in the morning. You can often easily get in, grab everything you need, and get out much quicker than you could at other bulk item stores (you know what one I'm talking about).
