Yet another Safeway, yet another review for their deli department. Safeways deli department recently started selling chicken nuggets and everyone raves about them, so wanted to try some and they are so good! They taste exactly like the chicken nuggets at McDonald's. I got the10 piece for $4.99 which to me was a great deal. The nuggets were fluffy, crispy, had a perfect amount of crunch in its skin, tender and hot when I ate them. I will definitely try them with their $9 lunch combo meal, and for that price it's unbeatable. I'm not some illiterate customer who can't clip coupons or misreads a tag so I had no trouble shopping around but man did my cashier rosemary suck! She didn't even try to greet me, all she did was glance over with a miserable look in her eye. I understand it's a retail job but at least be attentive to customers, I paid cash and not once did she ask what method of payment I was using or if I needed help with anything. I waited for a moment to see if she would pay attention to me and she was just looking down in the other direction until I finally told her it was cash. We ordered a cake for my 25th birthday. I never do anything for myself but I felt like at least getting a cake to celebrate a milestone year. We had pre ordered the cake 2 days in advance with the pick up being 5/23. When we arrived, they had the order for 5/24 so they quickly rushed my order. I ordered a marble cake with the strawberry jam filling. Yeah. That's not what it is. It's a vanilla cake (which I don't like vanilla) with very little strawberries slapped into icing when I specifically asked for the strawberry jam filling (I hate icing). Admittedly I mixed up the buttercream with the whipped one which added the overly sweetness but the icing did also taste and feel old. The cake itself tasted old. The picture was also wrinkly and not centered. The cake was honestly so overly sweet and gross that almost no one ate it. Last Friday a co-worker and I were in Salinas on a job. We decided to go over to the Safeway deli and pick up some tenders and nuggets for lunch. About once a month we choose the Safeway deli in whatever town we are in. Have never had a problem. That night I started having diarrhea. I went to sleep and woke up feeling even more nauseated. I ended up running into the bathroom and vomiting. The next day I was wrecked. Sunday still didn't feel well. Went to work today (Monday) body felt better but stomach was still not right. Talked to my co-worker and he to got sick. That pretty much assured me that I (we) got some bad chicken. I do want to add this as well. I am a former Chef and as I was standing in line I did notice some not so great food handling. Mainly what I noticed was the cashier was working with food then touching the register back n forth. I know they have a lot of turnover at lunch but that's no excuse to serve food in that way. My whole weekend was ruined and I still don't feel well. I should have listened to my gut when I saw how the food was being handled. Word to the wise. Trust your gut! So you don't throw up your gut. read more

On Tuesday, May 26th at about 2:20 p.m. I went to the self serve checkout to pay for the 10 ears of corn that was on sale for 10 cents each with a coupon. I tried to scan a picture of the coupon that I had on my phone. I tried a couple of times and then I hear a woman say out loud, it's not going to work. She startled me and I turn around to see that it is the cashier in charge of the self serve area. I looked at her confused because I have scanned barcodes from my phone at different stores before. She then repeats herself again looking annoyed with me and says you need to enter your phone number and scan the coupon. I just looked at her because I was surprised that she was speaking to me in such an aggressive manner especially since I had entered my phone number already. She then walked away mumbling something about going to find a coupon. I guess she found one because the machine then gave me the discount. She never returned to tell me that she remedied the situation. She just went back to her station. I then paid for my purchase and left. She made me feel stupid. This is not the first time I encountered a rude cashier. Last November I went through a regular checkout and the cashier talked to the customer in front of me. When it was my turn, the cashier didn't greet me nor did she say thank you after I paid. She never said a word to me. I don't know what is happening with Safeway customer service. I worked for Safeway in the early 80's and they crammed the importance of good customer service down our throats. There were posters in the break room that showed the importance of good customer service. They would tell us that without customers there is no job. I also notice that old Yelp reviews are answered by what looks like the corporate office. I don't see that they are responding to any negative reviews anymore. What happened to customer service? I unloaded my groceries onto a belt at a checkstand, and waited about two minutes only to be told they were closing that checkstand. The next checkstand over a clerk was just opening her register, looked over and saw my items, and didn't say anything. I finally asked ,are you open and she said yes when I finally moved all my stuff over to her cash register I asked why didn't you invite me over to your line? And she said I just got here. I've never felt so disrespected as an elderly person. I always treat people the way I like to be treated, and I would never treat someone like that. She looked at me, rolled her eyes and walked away. If it was her break time she could've acknowledged that to me. I worked for a grocery store and I know customers service. The delivery needs improvement. I order a lot through delivery and there seems to be more problems than needed. They say they are out of products and I will have someone check or check myself and the product is right there on the shelf. This happens almost every single order. Then you have drivers who cannot follow their map nor do they look hard enough to find addresses. I have had my groceries sent to another's when if they had just made a phone call, it could have been corrected. I shop at the Safeway on Main St by In-Shape yet my food comes from the Prundale Safeway. That makes no sense. Also, the dates on certain products are not checked. I have gotten milk that the date was bad the same day I got it. I use this system because sometimes I cannot get out and go myself. I hope it improves or they should just stop the program. My wife and I ordered a Half sheet for my daughter's birthday on the night of 8-29-25. 30 mins before it was closing, my wife tells me the one person that is left, he tells my wife to hurry up with the order because it was almost for the guy to clock out in a rush. The cake was supposed to be picked up on the following Sunday which is today 8-31-25. This idiot wrote 9-1-25 on the order after my wife told him it was for a Sunday pick up 2-3 times before it was finalized. A complete disaster. That's what we ordered and this is what we got..... they gave us some money off the cake and some cupcakes but we ended up having to get it due to having this cake or no cake at the party...... never ordering from this Safeway again. Terrible customer service. A survey showed up on the card reader and the cashier blocked me from the keypad to answer all the questions herself. She selected and submitted all the options quickly too, as if she'd had practice doing this to other customers for a long time. I asked if she could start the transaction over and she refused, then sent me to customer service, where they were extremely slow and not helpful at all. If you are paying at the register where the cashier has piercings and bad 2016 eyebrows, do yourself a favor and go to self-checkout or get in a different line instead. This store has trended downward for a while. The non-managerial Staff are doing a great job but Management has failed this store for a while. Whoever is in charge of buying at this store obviously doesn't care. Always finding items out of stock, or no longer carried and the selection has narrowed to the point of it being only slightly better than a 7-11. This stores selection reminds one of Pandemic times. Hopefully Safeway will realize that this store is failing its customer base and bring it back from near uselessness. Feb 23 ~3:20 pm I was in self checkout and I needed help with re-weighing some zucchini. After being reasonably ignored for a couple minutes I asked the employee for assistance. They were so rude, in my face, and belittling my knees were shaking. It was really embarrassing being in front other people including my fiancé I almost forgot to say thank you. She reminded me of my mom and I understand she may have had a bad day. I am not a punching bag or a therapist and if I see that happening again I'm asking for the manager. The deli area is never prepared anymore for service. We ordered a sandwich and burrito. The worker had to go back and forth for every damn ingredient. Plus his demeanor showed he hated his job and he knew he should've prepared his area. He went back and forth for bread, cheese, tortillas all the proteins everything. The whole process took 28 minutes for 2 items. He didnt even know what went in the sandwiches or burrito by default. By the way, when my partner ordered their sandwich first, he made it, put it in the oven, and just stood like a pigeon without asking if we needed anything else. My partner then said about 2 minutes later, "uhh can we order more? Or after the sandwich is done?". Is this guy the new service standard for Safeway deli? Damn. Very professional security staff. I walked into store at around 8:50pm on 10/28/2021 with my backpack on. I had my laptop in it and i don't want to leave my laptop in my car, it's been stolen from my car in the past. Apparently, I didn't know, Safeway doesn't allow backpacks inside their store. Security person approached me very professionally and explained. He offered to watch my backpack as I shopped for dog food for my puppy at home. I prefer Safeway over Walmart always. It's just, these little customer service details that converts occasional customer into repeats. Although, he kept looking at my shoes and trying to take a peak at my receipt when I was leaving, but it's all good, just doing his job. So, my son's birthday was on September 7th, a few days before his birthday we went in and ordered a cake. Come Saturday, Sep 7th, I got a call in the morning stating that they could not make the cake we ordered, which was a black panther cake. Apparently, that cake design was discontinued, and on top of that, the printer was also broken, so i couldn't even pick a different picture. I had no choices to choose from besides a motorcycle and a baby Yoda today to put on top of our black cake with purple borders. So I said baby Yoda. The lady recommended I go around to other stores to possibly find a black panther cake topper for our cake. Which obviously would be a huge inconvenience to run around town looking for a cake topper so specific. But with help from a family member, we managed to find something. So around 3-4 pm, my mother in law gets to the bakery to pick up black and purple cake with a baby yoda on top. To our surprise, they said that our cake had been dropped!! Nobody called to inform me or nothing. They offered us a cake from the front that had been made already and barely received a discount on it. The cake was dry and seemed too old for my tasting. And I had a child who was incredibly disappointed on his birthday. I talked to a manager 3 times, as she promised to "make it better and correct the mistake," but she had to wait for her manager Sal to go over it with him. I never heard back from her or any other manager. I've been getting my cakes here since forever! Only had a problem twice, but this time was the worst. How do you mess up a cake order twice? Not having employees double-check to make sure the cake requested is possible, and then dropping the cake and not even calling me to tell me! Produce and meat was fresh but glad I checked the dates on milk and eggs as the sell by date was today, but I dug to the back and found later dates. Nice selection of cold wine with many at reasonable prices, and large beer selection. This store has a bakery, deli, flowers, pharmacy and meat counter. I literally patron this Safeway almost every day, I live around the corner so the convenience is excellent and I may say as a former Safeway employee most of the staff is extremely pleasant. The main focus of my review is the Starbucks. And a few exceptionally friendly people in the store that definitely deserves some recognition Let me get started with Starbucks Miss Jackie is the absolute sweetest lady I have ever met I literally think she is so deserving of her position as a manager she goes out of her way to do the little things. literally when I say that she makes me smile is an understatement it really matters to her that people are happy and with customer service nowadays and as crazy as the world is I can't explain how valuable that is to come in after a long day of work and see an extremely friendly face that's willing to talk with you no matter how busy it is all while still helping other people and getting everything she needs done. I am a Starbucks fanatic I get Starbucks several times a day sometimes I definitely get it every day and sometimes twice and I am not joking when I say the location inside of this store makes the best drinks in Salinas. A lot of people think differently about kiosks inside of the stores but I happen to think that they are the best Jackie make sure that they make the drinks correctly and not just throw it together and it makes a very big difference in the taste. I have to mention Pete... oh Pete! He makes me laugh he remembers all of my drink orders he makes them the right way and he's always joking always smiling always friendly I have literally seen someone be very rude to him for no reason as I was waiting in line one day and he completely kept his composure and handled it with every bit of professionalism that someone could ask for. I really hope they treat him right and give him what he asked for if not I will personally poach him and train him to work for me at my company because every company could use someone with his personality and stability as a manager of a company whose very busy and constantly evolving I can see what a hard worker he is based on the personality traits he has and how much you see him at work. Alexis is a sweetheart and a valuable asset to the store. Dylan is very sweet and makes the drinks amazing I heard he will be leaving soon and that is super sad but good for him to further his education. First person I would like to recognize outside of Starbucks is Shelly she is the manager of the drive up and go department but prior to that she was the absolute most friendly checker in the world and I literally would befriend her outside of her profession because she is awesome there's really nothing else to say besides she is absolutely the best. I would also like to mention Rosemary she is funny sweet and very personable she goes out of her way to help always whether it be getting something from the liquor cabinet or from customer service she has always accommodated me in the most friendly way possible and that is so appreciated being I do frequent this location so often. Andrew is literally a hidden gem he is so funny sweet he has learned my name and he is always so helpful and takes his job very serious and I appreciate seeing his face every time I do. Lalita is awesome and I love her! She is literally a Safeway OG she has been there for years she was with the company when I worked there and that was way over 10 years ago probably 15 years right now and she is still as friendly when I worked there and she always says hi and I love her to death! Last but definitely not least I believe her name is Francis she is also work there very long time and she is so very special. Teresa is so fast it's crazy I haven't seen her in a very long time but she is awesome and also Michele is so very sweet and they often tell her she belongs in the medical field because of her caring personality As you can see that these people go out of their way to really help you at the end of the day this is a grocery store so the fact that I remember these peoples names and they remember me means something they should be recognized for their extremely good personality friendliness and overall kindness at the end of the day I honestly hope that upper management or corporate acknowledges this because not only negative reviews deserve a response read more

I love this store! Dennis is awesome! But, the reason they get 1 star is because of the bakery!!! I have always gotten a cakes through the years there and they were awesome but I don't know what happened because they've been going downhill ever since two years ago! We came here to order my grandson's cake they charged us extra for the screening which is fine. I picked up the cake I didn't bother looking at it and they didn't show it because I was in a hurry to get to the birthday party. I get to Chuck E. Cheese I open the cake and this is what I see.. Happy birthday spelt wrong they're both in cursive and then they print my grandson's name... I had to use a steak knife to cut into the screening because it was so freaking hard. Came in here once and, for whatever reason, it's more expensive than the Safeway in Del Rey Oaks, but just as crowded and uncomfortable. I don't understand that. This is maybe the worst strip mall in the county. All kinds of shops that you have no interest in but SO crowded. Taqueria Taquitos? What the hell is that about? And f'in Olive Garden. There is nothing bad to say about this place. The front-end self-checkout cashier (Dennis) is amazingly good. Eva (usually handles lane 1) is just as good. Theresa has spot-on customer service. The back-end (customer pickup) team is just as amazing. You will not find a single cranky, grumpy, jerk employee here. I am there almost daily so I'm able to see a lot. Bakery is worst this summer 2023. The guy working has no skills just babysitting his post looking at internet. Having lame excuses. No cakes available...district manager needs to be addressed on this growing decent. I haven't been to a Safeway in years. We ended up here as we needed ingredients for a dish we were making for a family reunion. The produce looked good, I found my ingredients, green and fresh looking. We also needed a cake for the reunion and the baker beautifully inscribed on the cake for us.
