Safeway at 1803 George Washington Way, Richland, WA I like this store much for the food choices, and the changes since I was a child when we shopped at a Safeway in Oregon. I like the grass fed beef, lamb, and wild fish and other items I don't find at Walmart (on dial a ride so Walmart is closest). Good wine selection, huge olive selection, great deli and many other great selections. I lived in NYC for 33 years, and am now living here. For the person who stated to "get over yourselves" regarding 2nd hand smoke, I ended up almost dead from it (worked in many offices long before it was banned outright). I know the laws extensively from Medical negligence (if heart or asthma then one can request more distance) ADA and other. Not always easy to have implemented though. (as well I was receiving my Masters in health care so know the damage it does to others). The door for instance is actually the outer most "overhang" (meant so that the overhead does not trap smoke in the area). Most places don't realize this (the laws can be hundreds of pages long). Then there are ingress/egress aspects of the ADA. My complaint was that now elderly and on disability (and looking younger and not ill) I asked the cashier to slow down, I could not keep up with the flow and was on dial a ride. I then mentioned I was on SSD and he said "he didn't care" I was selfish for being so slow!!! A clear violation of ADA "reasonable accommodation". These places are afraid of being sued for dog owners (if they ask "are you disabled") finding a loophole vis a vie the ADA (I used to work for both health care and legal firms) yet I "needed" to mention I was on disability. The entire line of customers started to pile on along with this checkout person, and I just shoved my food into my cart, and almost in tears went to sit down to pack it myself. One of the elderly in line behind me, on his way out repeated "your selfish". I was stunned - I had started to shop their to avoid not great customer care at Walmart. I got home and called and spoke to the manager. When I went in the next time, I introduced myself. He apologized of course and told me the person in question was dealt with. For the most part however, the service is excellent. As I mentioned to him and others at check out - saying can you slow down should suffice (they are told to do x amount in x time). read more

So I come to the store often and I really enjoy it. Unfortunately today I had an older gentleman with a beard working the self checkout that started rooting around in my bags while I was checking out. I understand him wanting to make sure I'm not a thief or anything like that but that was a little over the top. I'm sure it is frowned upon by the store and if I were to mention this to a manager they would put an into it. Former employee here. I recently was fired for "not being a good fit" which is weird I had never been a problem I always made sure to be polite to customers and always did my tasks. Apparently I was always "outside" which was not true I only went outside on my break. I honestly believe they just didn't like me and tried to find reasons to let me go. The floral manager Tina is extremely lazy and wants everyone to do everything for her she says racist things which is not okay. That old lady Tina should not be working in customer service. A day working here Tina and Jasmine will be in the floral department just talking for 20-30 minutes and nothing gets done about it. read more

The Cheap Chicken on Mondays is definitely that, cheap. Chicken wasn't cooked thoroughly, too salty, and didn't really taste like chicken. I will never get fried chicken from Safeway again. read more

I am not impressed, if I go into the store in the late afternoon or evening they are almost always out of milk products and It's nearly impossible to get help. The milk coolers aren't checked and often the containers are unreachable. Seems like it would be pretty easy for an employee to walk in the back and provide products by pushing the cartons down the shelf. WinCo is always well stocked and at least a dollar cheaper. read more

SAFEWAY FLORAL I went in this morning, they had a very nice orange arrangement only thing was that the main orange roses had dry petals and were starting to droop down. So I very politely asked the lady if swapping them out with other roses was a possibility. She huffed and puffed, told me I was wrong that the roses were fine. Starting taking them out, saying things under her breath, then she asked me to come back in an hour. I told her to just go ahead and stick them back in. I wasn't coming back. So rude!!!!! Sandwich party platter wasn't ready when we went to pick it up, they had two days notice, our "premium" veggie tray was slimy and broccoli was rotten, had to throw it away, cake was good but had to go to 3 departments to get all our stuff. Come here all the time since it's my local Safeway. Been coming for 4 years and never fails to be extremely cold inside. Even worse during winter....why not put the heater to use?? At this location the store has packages of bottled water stacked up on top of each other that way the price is not showing smart. Organic produce is very bad quality and why is your dairy section out of popular products. I was waiting at the self check out to pay for packages of bottled water and two registers were closed but the people were cutting in front of me. That's freaking rude. Get a new manager or fix your store. Have been shopping at this place for ages. read more

Absolutely terrible service in the meat and seafood department. I waited for 15 minutes to get what should have been a simple order.

Smells absolutely horrible. Like rotten food. The cigarette smoke outside was more appealing.

This is my last choice if I need to get groceries. Luckily, location is convenient. Two Stars is because of consistently spoiled produce. Frustrating to buy salad mix that looks fresh, but opening it the SAME DAY and smelling the rot. Has happened multiple times... and at this point, I refuse to try again. This is a review for the bakery. I had ordered a cake online received a confirmation email. When I went to pick up they told me there was no cake there for me and that they sometimes have issues with their online orders coming through. The nice lady in the bakery was able to get me a cake just like the one I ordered in about 15 minutes. I appreciate the effort she put in for me. read more

Of all grocery stores in my 'hood, this is probably the one I go to most. It's a bit close, and they have decent products. I especially like their "Natural Market" section (the Kennewick one is a bigger store but doesn't have a natural market). I've ridden my bike here and I do like that there are bike racks outside. read more

On my growing list of reasons why I cant wait to move home you'll find representing #100,992,346 - Safeway in Richland. The list needs to be moved to electronic records (like the hospitals we were promised) but the stimulus money hasnt been tendered for this cause just yet. If it wasnt within striking distance from work, I would never shop here. Its that bad. This may be the only store on Earth that accepts ANY form of currency. I witnessed people paying with out-of-state-two party checks, personal checks, a goat, Spanish bullion, IOU's, beads, a hand shake, some change from a piggy bank and even a dowry!. And this was in one visit on my lunch hour. There just isnt a place for personal check anymore unless it is for utilities and/or the rent. The selection here is pathetic. In trying to make it a one stop shopping experience, they have failed at everything. The business has the same half-life as the Hanford site. As employment decays, so will the customer base unless they make some hard decisions. Sliced deli meat at $10/lb? Really? Mark Twain hypothesized that "sacred cows" make the best burgers, but It looks like that is only the tip of the ice burg! Yes, apparently they are responsible for some divine corned and roast beef, too. Get your pumpernickel bread ready! It gets an additional star because the deli makes some reasonably priced delicious sandwiches. read more

Since I live fairly close to this store it ends up being the one I run to when I'm in need of a fast buy. However it never ends up being the fast buy that i need. the lines are impossible slow. One time I waited for over 15 minuets to get through a line with four people ahead of me seeing a family of three leave more that a hundred dollars worth of food in there cart in front of me and leave because of the slow cashier. There selection is good but not worth the hours that you have to wait in line and its always like this ALWAYS I'll take the six minute drive to Winco. read more

Safeway, being only a five minute walk from my house, gets quite a but of my business. I'm very torn between a 2 or 3, but I'll go with a 3 for now. They have a 'frequent shoppers' card, which can add up to some pretty decent savings on their slightly-higher-than-normal priced food. I'm not too sure on how the numbers work, but if you spend a certain amount using your 'Club Card,' you get $0.10 off at their gas station... the one located way over off 395 in Kennewick. I might be more excited about this if I didn't have to drive a half an hour to claim the discount. My last few experiences have been sub par. Their assistant manager, who as far as I can tell, hates his job there, has snapped at me multiple times. I grabbed a case of soda once and when the box broke and soda cans went every where, I told him as he was walking by. His response was something like, 'It's not my job..." Well, sir. Fine. Most of the cashiers are extremely nice, through I have had one or two scoff at me when we were using EBT. You can almost never find any one to help you find anything unless you're in the produce aisles, which have a decent selection by the way. I walked out of there with a loaf of bread, two jugs of milk, sour cream and yogurt. Maybe I should have double checked before I left the store, but they expired two days after I got home. Just look twice before you buy. They have the best organic selection I've found, except for the Farmer's Market in the summer. Hit it up mid day or late evening to avoid the rush of better-than-thou shoppers (I don't know why they all flock to Safe-Way) and make sure to drive the right way in the confusing parking lot. I don't shop here regularly at all -- living in Pasco and working in S. Richland, but each time I have visited on the way to a dinner party or social event in Richland, I have always been impressed by the wine selection here. On par with Yoke's. Also, one of the few places in town to pick of Kosher items---just not Kosher for Passover. read more

Customer Service sucks! Order something from them one time and when I went to pick it up it's not ready, spoke to the manager and dont have a clue whats going on. Told me they will give me $ 5.00 discount when I come back the next day for the order. The next day they just gave me $ 2.00 OFF. Hope they change their ways or might as well train their people better. read more

I love this store. Not because it is close to where I live ( the hood, come on) but because you don't have to fight the crowds like winco. Hate, hate the parking and lines at winco. But that's another review. They also have very fresh produce and usually have a special on meat for the weekends. If you love to grill (like I do) then this comes in very handy. I have never had to wait more than a couple minutes in line, big plus, and they are very friendly. read more

I really like this Safeway. The deli offers a pretty good lunch/sandwich deal, the store is clean and pretty straight forward and it has a Starbucks inside that rarely has a line. The store can get a bit crowded and the lines from checking out to getting a sandwich at the deli can get a bit long. It doesn't help when customers break out ye old checkbook and some poor 18 year old cashier 1) has never seen a check before 2) just started that day 3) has never processes a check on the register. It got a little dicey the other night but if that's the worst of it, then I'll probably pop in again when I'm in the area. read more

As far as a safeway goes, this place is decent. The employees are decent. The selection is decent. The things that are great about this store can be found if u really look and browse. 1.) their turkey pesto wraps from the deli are fantasmal! They take me back to the days I went to that pasta shop over by where the the old payless building lies abandoned. Too bad the owner closed up shop there. 2.) They have an impressive gift card center from everything to fast food like mcdonalds to vintage clothes like aeropostale. I'm still trying to find a netflix prepaid card tho. Thought for sure they had em. Oh well! 3.) it's located in a convenient area close by homes and other businesses. Location is a must to me since I don't drive right now. There's a bus that goes right by it on g way. Now the negatives. 1.) pretty spendy if you ask me. As far as price goes I'd rather swing by wal mart or winco. 2.) None of the employees ever really go beyond the call of duty. I'd have to track someone down to get help and frankly that's just a pain in my ass. So this store has some hidden treasures but maybe you'd be better going somewhere else if it's not your style. read more

I am very disappointed with the lack of customer service at this Safeway. I went there this morning to pick up lunch and a card for a co-worker that is having surgery. I got there around 0645 and stood at the checkout with the light on for 3-4 minutes before someone walking by noticed I had not been helped. She was polite and jumped on the register. Then, the cashier came back and took over. After talking to other employee and started to assist and said "Sorry, I was gonna pee my pants". Wow. Then, she got back off and had the other employee finish my transaction. I was frustrated because it was taking a long tine. But, I just went on my way so I wouldn't be late for work. Upon arriving at work, I noticed they had not put the card in the bag!! So, I called to see if it was there. The woman that answered. "Jen" was rude but agreed to see if the card was there. Which it was. So, I asked if it could be left at customer service and be picked up. She said yes. And did not mention needing a receipt. Just that she would make sure it stayed there. I am unable to leave work right away so I called a co-worker to pick it up on her way in to work. She agreed and went to get it around 0900. The woman working was very rude and told her she needed the receipt. So, I sent her a picture of it. She showed her the picture and the so called customer service lady slammed down the card on the counter and said "Whatever!! She better not come back and try to get it herself!" In my opinion this entire experience was ridiculous. If it wasn't across the street I wouldn't come to this Safeway anyways. They are always understaffed and it takes forever to get anything. If a one star was an option it would have gotten that!! read more

HOLY COW - What is it with Safeway stores?? The only consistency in this chain store is they are consistently bad at customer service. When I lived in Richland - it took only ONE experience at this store - to decide to never go back. Unfortunately, I didn't heed my own advice and returned several more times - same result! What is it they say about "doing the same thing and expecting a different result"? C-R-A-Z-Y. Now when I visit Richland for extended stays I avoid this store like the plague! I know value is important - and I don't mind paying more for items if the quality, service, and selection are warranting of that extra dollar sign. Safeway does not deserve my $$'s. Here are the Nuts & Bolts!: PROS: Angle in parking in the private lot. CONS: - Long - Slow - Lines!! The trend I noticed at this store was that very few people had more than a few items - and yet it took forever to get through a checkout line. The cashier that scanned my groceries can't multi-task - i.e., scan and talk at the same time. FINE - don't talk to me if you can't manage both. I Looked around and everyone waiting in a line was frustrated. The only reason I would ever shop here is for convenience - and when you stand in line for 10 minutes for a few items - that is not convenient. - Poor Customer Service - as in ZERO. No one there knows anything. No apology for not having the item I was looking for. No offer to recommend anything similar. They don't even know where their own products are. - Produce - YUCK! When the 5-day-old tomato sitting on my patio table in my backyard in the summer sun looks better than what they have ... ??? ... time to move on! - Store is dark and it's difficult to see items. Like other Safeway stores - they must think that dim lighting improves your chances of missing expired items. I need to be able to see what I want to buy - or see something unexpected I might want to buy. You need a headlamp to read anything on a label or shelf. NUTSHELL: Bring a flashlight because it's dark and dingy. Plan to check all your expiration dates. Avoid the produce section. Don't expect any "warm fuzzies" or help locating items. All that being said - I have to ask ... why bother with this store? With all the other options just five (5) minutes away? Don't - just don't and you'll be glad. Does anyone from Safeway read these? Always understaffed, I stood for 20 minutes in line to buy a pack of gum and a salad kit with at least 20 other people, and there was only ONE register open - and the guy running it was taking his sweet time. To top it off, I see two or three other workers who could be running a register that are chatting with their buddies in the deli department. This store is last resort, and I pray that someday somebody will buy it out and hire a staff that actually makes me feel like my time is valuable. Safeway is a joke!!! read more

1. Without fail, you WILL have to walk by 1-3 employees on their breaks in front of the store smoking cigs. If you're lucky, you won't hear them bitching about their coworkers/job/customers/husbands. Is it too much to ask them to smoke out back like a normal business? 2. The customer service is downright AWFUL. Well, let me clarify: the meat dept, bakery, and young staff are great. But if you are unfortunate enough to have to deal with anyone else, be prepared for full-on eye roll assaults, heavy sighs, passive aggresive stares, or you may be (and I can't decide if this is a good thing, or bad) completely ignored. A few days ago the...lovely old woman (gag)...at the customer service counter actually GLARED at me when I said I needed cash back on my debit, then she grabbed her head with both hands and practically shouted "I can't do more than one thing at a time!". Oh, I'm sorry, I thought your job was customer service? 3. The prices are Out.Of.Control. 4. Fights between coworkers are quite common. I've seen checkers lose it on baggers. Red faced, spittle flying, shaking. And this was a grown woman taking on a teenager. It's a sad mess. It's really a shame that I live so close to this store and support it as often as I do. I've been to several Safeways in other areas with quite wonderful customer service, but this store has a real problem. I would advise to stay as far away as possible. Or make a point to avoid anyone over the age of 30. read more
