This Safeway in Pacific Grove is such a great little neighborhood store. Every time I stop in, it's clean, well organized, and fully stocked, which honestly makes grocery shopping so much easier. The aisles are easy to navigate, and I can usually find everything I need without having to hunt around. The produce and floral sections are always fresh, and the store overall feels welcoming and well cared for. Staff have also been friendly and helpful when I've needed assistance. It's just a solid, reliable Safeway and a convenient stop when you're in Pacific Grove. Definitely one of the nicer locations I've visited. Especially if you are from the Central Valley. read more

The Brussel Sprouts were all worm eaten on the inside. Also, they are out of the certain yogurts and the frozen fruit 3 out of every 4 trips. When they do have them, by buying 3-4 yogurts and 1-2 packages I buy all of the product. Today , I didn't qualify for the 10 yogurt discount because of course there was only a couple. I asked for it anyways, and the checker refused but mentioned we probably have more in the back. I was thinking how many products do they have stock in the back that they never refill? Unacceptable.This is frustrating since there are only 2 Safeways in the town. Lack of competition allows this store to get away with mediocrity. read more

Clean and well lit grocery store. Friendly staff and good variety of food and other grocery items. Smaller location but really fit the aesthetic and neighborhood. Parking lot was smaller too. Once again this place is the worst. $10.50 on sushi that is literally inedible. And I bet they wouldn't do a thing if I returned it. I really don't appreciate this. Service is beyond terrible. Nobody is friendly. Last time a thief almost ran over a little old lady running out with his goods. 2 employees witnessed it. Didn't do a thing for the lady, just waved bye to the thief and yelled "see ya next time!" (Ok not really but they might as well have) However they have no problem being rude to the paying customers. The entire store reminds me of that movie Idiocracy. If you haven't seen it you should. You'll get it. Meanwhile please please let this store get bought out by a company who cares. The deli workers were rude and unapologetic. We ordered a few sandwiches and at first they said they never received the order. They ran out of bread, chicken salad, and told us to pick it up at the back of the store! Sketchy. Tasted horrible and was not even cut. Took about 40 minutes to get two sandwiches and warm water. My boyfriend and I went in for some groceries, he grabbed beer. I left my wallet in the car considering I only use Apple Pay. Cashier said he couldn't sell us the beer since I didn't have my ID, but this wasn't the issue I had. I understand that. He proceeded to SCOLD us and say "mhm 10,000 dollar fine and if I was the owner of this business I'd go to prison.", in a rude tone. Christmas Day 2025, Safeway opened after a gigantic storm. Much of the power was out last night. Today after 12 noon, Safeway was well stocked (for what I needed) and beautifully run on a very short staff. The Santa at check out told me that the employees that were there volunteered to get the store up and running. They handled the volume of customers efficiently as well. Such a rude lady at cashier counter. She didn't respond to my hello. That's fine. Then while billing, she carelessly tossed my egg tray over. I checked and saw she broke one egg. I pointed it and then she couldn't see it. Of course I checked the eggs before picking them. I pointed hard and then she saw the cracked egg and asked her helper to get a fresh one. Helper was dropping most of the stuff while packing. So glad o don't happen to live in this neighborhood. Pity to those who have to tolerate this. Wow, if I could give this store a zero, l would. Talk about old and dirty. This store was probably built in the 70's and it looks it. The aisles are narrow and cluttered, the baskets are tiny, the store is dimly lit and the selection of goods is so limited. And the prices are 3x as high as they are in almost every other state. Then you go to check out and the staff is rude and they don't supply you with bags, because they are bad. But they will sell you all you need. What a joke. It has probably been 30 years since I have shopped in a Safeway, and I know why. No wonder they went out of business in my state. If anyone thinks this is a good supermarket, they need to get out of this city more. It is so regressive. It isn't old and quaint. It is old and dilapidated. I can always find what I need here. Great selection of cheese, meats and crackers to go with a bottle of wine. I visit Carmel 4-5 times a year. This is our place to pick up anything we left at home or need to supplement our stay. I do like that they have a great selection of newspapers. I love all the workers there ...but that older, tall , red headed cashier has anger issues . He has no patience , I have seen him be so rude to costumers . I came in here to get some items for our picnic lunch. Terrible! Lines were beyond long and they did not open up more lanes. This woman cashier rang up something that ended up not matching the promo price. Instead of apologizing, she asked me what I owed her. Who does that?! You should refund and re-ring it at the correct price. Not just be lazy and just take the difference out. She actually just asked other cashiers to get me the change. All Safeway's have started using digital coupons, has member sales and regular sales. There were 5 people standing inline and of the 5 people were upset including me because we bought based on sales and found out we had to download digital coupons to get the sale price. Not only did it hold up the line but we all left upset. Stop making things more difficult than it has to be. Just give us the sale price and stop with the gimmicks of luring people in the store for the sale then making us download the stupid digital coupons. read more

Came here for a sandwich. First the pre-made boars head sandwich section was completely empty, and I mean not even 1 product to buy. So I went to the actual deli counter. A female employee made my sandwich (I'm guessing morning-mid shift) I'm a New Yorker so sandwiches are my favorite...They barely had anything on the menu, not the cheese I wanted, not the Turkey I wanted not even vinegar. So I ducked it up and just paid for a basic cheese and Turkey sandwich. I'm already more than halfway done with my sandwich and I found a long piece of hair in my meal. I can't eat it anymore! I've also worked in the food service industry for 10+ years and as a food establishment quality assurance inspector. The servers need to wear hairnets that cover the entire head. Over time, I have watched as well as listened to staff and customers regarding my same and some new impressions and concerns. My last straw, not so simple. I have to continue shopping here. They are the only store open late, I care for elderly near by. I do not want to have to go anywhere else. I just hope for the store to improve. I do not know if it is indeed the manager as many say, I do not have experience managing a grocery store. i am sure it is very difficult. I do know in my own experience the woman manager I have had run ins with scares me, I feel she comes across rude and seems to not see the stores patrons as "customers" in a way I wish to be treated. Incompetent and rude staff. I came in for lunch and went to the lunch counter. I asked how many wings come in the "assorted combo" I was told none. I asked the wing combos comes with no wings? The reply was yes, it comes with tenders. I repeated the wing combo doesn't come with wings? In the most rude and entitled voice said, "You asked for the tenders". I said no, I asked about how many wings came in the "wing and tender combo". All I got was unprofessional service, a rude tone, and a ton of attitude. After I said I'm not buying anything here after that, the employee laughed at me. This level of entitlement from someone who serves precooked chicken is startling. The Pacific Grove Safeway sucks relative to the Carmel Safeway. It's smaller, dirtier, and is frequently out of key items. The employees are less happy than their counterparts in Carmel. They need to fire the Pacific Grove store manager, and clean, modernize and enlarge the store. read more

Not sure why this location got so few stars, but when we were visiting and there were no vending machines at our hotel, and when we had a midnight craving for soft drinks, specifically Bundaberg ginger beer, they had it. I am leaving a five star review based on the employees only. If I had to leave a review based on the physical condition of our local Safeway store I don't know if I could give it a whole one star. A couple years ago they made a big deal about kicking the front of the building out 15 feet and we all thought hey at last were getting an improved Safeway but no; they built yet another Starbucks. I find the people at the pharmacy to be especially helpful. My favorite cashier of course is Andy but I'm sure everybody says that. I wish Safeway would invest some money in our community and give us a decent place to shop especially when Trader Joe's is it just two doors down the street. We also have a Luckys a half mile away. Very glad to see the remodel finished. It is such a need improvement. The produce section is way bigger and better than before. The coffee shop is a nice addition as well. Overall so much better than before. Looks like they added some new friendly employees. Some of the old rude employees are still there. The isles are still very small and the meat selection is very poor. Decent for a quick shopping stop but I will still head over to Save Mart down the street. read more

As far as Safeways go this is a very small store. I've shopped here a couple of times before and my visit today solidified its place on my "Yay! I'm a fan" list of grocery stores. The tight aisles and somewhat cramped feeling inside is made up for by super polite staff from courtesy clerks to checkers and meat or produce specialists. This morning the inside store Starbucks sported a long line but the two persons running the stand worked the line steadily. Demographics run along the same you find at the Rio Road Safeway in Carmel or the Safeway in Carmel Valley. Unlike the Safeway in Del Rey this market has very clean and inviting tables in front of the store. Unlike the Crossroads (Rio Road) store this one has a pharmacy. What's great about this store is there's a Trader Joe's next door so if one lacks a product for a particular recipe the other is likely to have it. Pacific Grove and PB residents are somewhat blessed with such shopping options. read more
