Usually out of a lot of things even pre-Covid that the other Safeway across town has. Long waits at the deli for meat and cheese usually and I swear the employees pretend to be busy in the back or help the sandwich people instead if they see you waiting! Some of the cashiers aren't that friendly. Today took the cake though. It was busy and assistant manager Jino was rushing to check me out and as a result my broccoli and cereal ended up on the floor instead of on the belt where she intended to throw it. She did pick it up at the end without so much as an "I'm sorry." After I had paid she realized I didn't have enough of my own bags so she commented that I didn't have enough. I agreed, so they used 2 plastic bags. She is a model company employee though - despite the long lines, she made sure that Safeway got every last cent, and took the time to ring me up for the 20¢ bag fee after I had already paid for my groceries. I'm just wondering when I go back to return my bag of sugar that somehow got slashed during checkout, if I can charge them 10¢ for the bag I'm transporting it so it doesn't spill everywhere?! read more

The Safeway on Diablo went above and beyond to make my shopping experience perfect. Coco, in the meat department personally took care of my specialized order. The filet roasts look amazing. I went in last night around 9 and my checker wasn't wearing a mask. Disgusting. Other employees saw and did nothing. Not okay at all. The employee also gave me back 4-5$ more than he was supposed to in change (thanks for the free money) and said "we aren't doing math tonight". Obviously I don't care about getting extra change back, I just wish safeway cared about the community. Novato is mostly a retirement town with at risk folks everywhere, including me as someone with asthma. Additionally, the checker made me take my mask off to check my ID. Normally, this is a somewhat unsafe practice that I know all safeways in the area are doing, so usually it doesn't bother me. Too bad no option for zero stars. I purchased a defective protein drink shaker here which leaked terribly. Brought it back the next day for an exchange. No one at customer service counter. Was told to try the floral desk for help. No English spoken. After 15 minutes an employee was paged who told me she would have to check with the manager to who she had to call. After a 3 minute conversation she's hung up and simply said "no". ...but if I wished, I could come back another time when a customer service employee was there and "dispute" the decision. If I know I need a few things and I'm on my way home from work, I will head here. This store particularly is in a convenient location on my route home. Usually I can find whatever item I'm looking for unless it is a spice or sauce I have to go to a specialty store for. I tend to buy just a handful of things and leave as quickly as I can. As the years progressed through its various facelifts, the aisles have gotten smaller, the carts wider, and the customers more unaware of others. The cashiers here seem to also embody some disgruntlement about their schedules. It is not rare for me to end up in the line where a cashier is complaining about not having his break on time. Today, I ducked and dodged carts for some chicken broth, green onions, and a whole chicken to make some homemade soup. Today must've been my lucky day for I found a check stand line with a pleasant fellow who checked me out right quick. I will continue to use this store for the few bare necessities I need and nothing more. read more

I asked a question to an employee on where to find something and they looked annoyed I would even ask them something and just muttered the aisle number to find it as they kept walking by. I am so disappointed. I placed an order for delivery 5 days ago(earliest time available) and it was supposed to be delivered today between 9 and 11. The app said that my order was being assembled. When I finally got through to customer service, I was told that my order was canceled since they did not have my items. Surely would have been nice to be notified. To add insult to injury, I just place the identical order for the earliest time availability which is 6 days from now. I received notification that one item was not available. WHAT!?! It is exactly the same order that should have come today. Oh and Since the app was updated, orders can't be updated. This is not this particular Safeway's fault but adds to my frustration. I normally go in to get a sandwich from this deli 3-4 times a month. Today I was very unhappy. The gentleman must have been new. I was trying to give him the benefit of the doubt but when I bit into my sandwich I was so unhappy. Not only was the soda fountain out of order, but when he put mustard on my bread it broke open and went everywhere. He got another piece of bread and started over. Well the mustard squirted in the middle only and the turkey was all very shredded up. He didn't know the different between the cheeses and was not very friendly. He needs some extra training and to learn how to make a sandwich. The bread was hard and the lettuce tasted like dirt. I've never had a sandwich that was made so poorly from there. He also didn't change his gloves when he should have. He had a hat on but his hair (bangs) were hanging kin his face. He should have a hair net on, as I found hair in my food. I'd give this place 0 stars if given the chance. Worst experience nine years back. Regarding employment opportunity they won't hesitate to discriminate you. As an Asian I was denied due to a strict hair policy back when I was in high school. This was around 2007-2008. The shift manager interviewing at the time was some young female blonde in her 20s. I was not given the option to tie or keep it neatly back and was told to cut it or get out. She kept calling her superiors on the phone whoever it was. I recently checked back this forsaken place last year (almost ten years later I know) and saw an employee with dreads pulled back past down his shoulder. He was African American. That's when I knew something was off. The Sacramento Safeway I shopped at last week had a white guy with hair past his shoulders. He didn't need to tie it back. To further dive into curiosity I decided to ask him some questions. (He simply said "They don't discriminate based on age, race or religion.") Either the company policy have changed or the Novato location is the most RACIST!!! White supremacy played a role at this location. Whatever time period this was. I just hope that blonde shift manager or her superiors are fired by now! What's said already cannot be taken back. I was not treated like a human being. This 1 star goes for the inept in the Deli Dept. I was there during lunch hour. When I arrived, I was thrilled to see only 1 customer ahead of me and was already being helped. The gentleman had ordered 2 sandwiches and wanted them heated. He had NO IDEA how to place them on the pan and transfer them to the oven. In mid transfer he drops half a sandwich gets upset, picks up the remaining, doesn't change his gloves, starts all over and ever so carefully and slooooooowly tries one more time. Waiting patiently..... He removes the sandwiches from the oven, halves them, very slooooooowly wraps them, continues to help the customer to the other side of the deli. Finally finishes with the customer and completely ignores me and begins to help the other customers slicing meats and cheeses. WTF??!!! I was standing there for 20 MINUTES!! witnessing this shit show. No one came over to help me at all. The only one who witnessed all of this was the girl at the sushi bar. So add 20mins. of me watching this and waiting plus maybe 10 minutes of the initial prep and 10 minutes to write this review... For F--Sakes!! F---N' 30 minutes to prepare 2 sandwiches???!! You for sure can't be mad at the employees that work here. Yes they work slowly at times and tend to seem like they don't care about you waiting in a huge line behind 49 people while only one check stand is open but imagine working at this store yourself. Understaffed at all times and the management and the company (who should bare all of the blame for this) rarely have to interact with their grumpy customers and let the poor employees who have zero say in staffing levels and are not paid very highly deal with all of the angry and frustrated shoppers. The store that cuts back on cashiers so it can have two people standing at the self checkout lane while one poor cashier is dealing with angry customer after angry customer. Some actual competition would for sure hurt this store and get them to rethink their idea of customer service and a good shopping environment to improve their bottom line. read more

I have experienced way better stores in my life, but hey its SAfeway not a high end boutique market. Yesterday I was with my two kids and we went in to ask if they had a "car-cart" those cool cars in front of the cart that occupies the kids while I get to shop, you know. I was looking for it and a woman asked me if I needed help. When I said what I was looking for she got visibly angry and said: "we don't have those, people stole them and we have had accidents"" Well I have two kids, "do you have a cart that holds two kids?" "No, just put the big one in the basket" Also her name tag said "shift supervisor" Now I am not an expert, but I am a parent and I know that kids fall out of the basket if they aren't secured. So I shopped with one kid secured and one running around, he loved it. And she glared at him when he kicked several balls out of the display. I laughed and asked him to pick them up. They have a starbucks, a wells fargo branch and decent enough sales to keep me coming back. But work on the employees ok? read more

I truly have cart rage every time I enter this store. Why do they have so many displays everywhere? The isles are already small and cramped. Let's not get into the lines, because they don't have enough cashiers. Oh the self checkout is also a nightmare always a problem, and you have to ask a rude employee to help you. Here is a tip - don't go to the Safeway Deli here when it's lunch time at the local high school. I needed to pick up some deli trays for a business meeting. The trays looked great and the people who took my order that morning and prepped the food, did a fine job. But just trying to pay for it was so stressful. A mob of kids were lined up, a bunch were ordering from various parts of the deli and a whole bunch of kids who looked like they were just hanging out, waiting on their friends. The kids weren't really the issue, they were all just normal pleasant kids, but trying to get my order rung up took a long long time. I wanted to get some condiments and other things like plates and napkins, but one of the ladies behind the counter, sort of desperately told me go check out in the registers up front. She was fielding questions from all over the place and the other two ladies back there were looking as overwhelmed. They were so disorganized, I couldn't tell where the line started or ended. I saw three (I am not making this up) three people leave out of frustration; a couple huffing under their breath how chaotic it is there; the Adults that is. I guess the kids are use to waiting in chaotic lunch lines, like they have at schools, which this seemed a whole lot like. This can't be the first time 35 high school kids came looking for lunch at Safeway. You'd think there would be a better process. I'm admittedly writing this review a bit out of my own frustration, because the delay put me behind in my day and caused me to bring the office's lunch, late. I also didn't get the plate or napkins I needed. Again, the food was good, the presentation was good and the people who took my order over the phone were much accommodating. Safeway just needs to manage its traffic a little better, say around 12:30 when the kids get out of school for lunch. read more

This is my go-to Safeway. It's closer to my house and even though the one on Nave Drive is newer, it's very poorly run. I used to come to the Safeway to get sandwiches all the time until they got rid of Wendy or she quit. The deli has never been the same since Wendy left so I don't even bother. This store has most items that I want and the prices are not bad. The big problem I have is the self checkout. It tells you to put your bags on the scale and when you do, it says unknown items are on the scale or we can't verify the weight of your bags or something like that. How did they know my bags are not made out of leather? It just causes the lady who's working there, or guy, to look at me like I'm crazy. I actually feel bad for them. Over and over again as I ring the next item and put it into the bag, that same error message comes up: we can't verify the weight. What a hassle! This is not a good idea if you have a lot of things, but it should be the wave of the future. If this is how the wave of the future is going to run, I'm gonna make sure I have on two lifejackets! read more

I've got a question for the produce department: how hard is it to restock the little thin/clear plastic produce bags? There are probably, what, 8 spaces for rolls and at any given time at least 3, sometimes 4 are completely empty. I can't imagine it's too difficult to spot that or physically replace one of those bags. Otherwise, I like this store for the most part. It's not as "hoity toity" as Hamilton, and most of the employees here have a good sense of what customer service means. However, there are a few stragglers. I asked a lady tonight where I could find matches and she responded, somewhat indignantly, that they certainly didn't carry matches, when, voila we both spotted 10 feet away from us the charcoal/grilling section where there were a variety of match types. I dunno, may seem petty, but just one recent example of a few awkward interactions I've had there. Overall, I have to say, I love this store. But I'm not exactly proud to shop there, nor do I really enjoy my experiences there THAT much. read more

I then thought I would check another store and they had the items. I tried to call them back and was put on hold for over 35 minutes. When I was finally picked up...they hung up on me. I have been a customer of Safeway for many years. I am working night for the next few months. So on my way home I stopped at the Novato Safeway to do some shopping. I spent time walking thru the store which was a mess, I do understand you have to stock the shelves and you are a 24Hours store. At least I thought you were. After filling gathering my groceries I headed to the registers and the only one that was lit was number 7. But no one was there, so I headed over the self check out and they all said CLOSED. So back to number 7. There was piece of cardboard there that said" Checker on Aisle 15" , I headed over to 15 and said " HI, are you Checking tonight" He said "No I'm not" . I said "Who is" and he said "no one, We are not checking anyone for the next 20 minutes". I was shocked, I said "So how do I pay for my groceries", he said "you cant. That's our policy" . I said "You must be kidding, I just got all this stuff". He said "sorry, but we are not checking, you have to wait". At this point I put my basket down and said "here you go", He could care less and he walked right back to what he was doing. I hope my frozen food and Ice Cream don't make it back on the shelf after they thaw out. But I am sure you will sell it at a later date. This is ridicules. You call yourself a 24 Hour store, but stop checking people at certain times. I WILL NEVER SHOP AT SAFEWAY AGAIN AND I WILL TELL EVERYONE I KNOW ABOUT THIS. " read more

REVIEW FOR THE FLORAL DEPARTMENT I didn't want to spend much on flowers because they get thrown out after the event. My mother-in-law was very helpful and she found out about Safeway's floral department. The floral manager, Brian, was great! He was very helpful and the bouquet he made for me was beautiful! We also got bouttonieres and corsages at a great price. For decorating the gazebo where we had our vows, we bought blue and yellow hydrangeas in pots for $30 each. Brian wrapped up the pots in purple basket weave and a lavender bow. For the tables, I got small hurricane vases from Dollartree and I put a stalk or two of Alstromeria and Baby's breath (both from Safeway). The overall effect was pretty. We realized that we did not need to break the bank to have a pretty wedding. read more

Now I know why my friends and coworkers drive to the Safeway by Bel Marin Keys. EVERY SINGLE EMPLOYEE IN THIS STORE HAS A GIGANTIC ATTITUDE!!! Today - was accused of cutting the self-checkout by an aggressive employee (note : I had let two customers go ahead of me) Two weeks ago - was rudely and patronizingly instructed that one could not purchase batteries at the self checkout. The employee basically reprimanded me for such outlandish behavior then loudly showed me all the mistakes I had made. Note: I do not work there and do not expect to be "disciplined". Two months ago - was charged $55 for Its It ice cream sandwiches. The checker angrily told me she had given me the wrong receipt and "Don't worry about it." Three months ago - was chastised for not having a Safeway card in front of several customers. The employee made faces and stared at me for not wantin one. This is the same employee who barged me $55 for ice cream. I no longer shop here. read more
