It's a seemingly nice grocery store, a bit run of the mill for what one might expect in the area. Strangely, you may encounter some unusual assistance selecting beverages or other items. I ended up with a wine that seemed to have the effects of a plastic jug of vodka, but there may have been some other factors involved. If you do to go here, perhaps avoid your go to items. Was at the Safeway earlier in the day. This has been my go to Safeway since I was a kid. I have loved all the new improvements going into the store and some new employees. One of them from the deli was super helpful today I believe his name was Jermaine young fellow. He went above and beyond when he didn't need to when y'all were out of honey mustard, he was able to find some in the bank and provide it to me after serving me. Minus 5 stars for this place. Worst in customer service of any grocery store in the area. The employees show little interest in helping customers, and are somewhat annoyed if you ask for assistance. The lines get really long and they do not call more checkers. Also, they run out of items and the organization of the aisles is confusing. read more

Absolutely the worst Safeway in the county of Marin, if not entire state of California. Whoever the manager is at the Safeway should be fired. This is not the staff's fault. This is the Manager's fault. Putting staff in positions where they can't do their job like the deli person who spoke zero English had never worked. The deli machine is unconscionable. I shop here frequently. The staff are very responsive and polite. The deli is overworked, but the meat dept and the floral dept is pretty quick. The bakery staff are mostly around just in the AM. If you want a cake, order it online. They always have plenty of cakes, etc. but run out of bagels by lunchtime. There's a Starbucks inside which is a plus. Produce is excellent and good. The lines move quickly and people are polite. Parking is easy and never too crowded. Grab a Super Duper burger or a Peets' Coffee while you're there. read more

I stopped by this Safeway with my girlfriend to get some refreshments and snacks for our winter road trip. We navigated our way over here after coming back from visiting the town of Sonoma. Despite it being busy here that day, we were able to find a parking spot pretty close to the entrance. The store is clean, well-stocked, and run decently. We made a quick pit stop, and then we went to buy some iced tea and snacks. Checkout was seamless, and we were back on the road in no time. The crowd here is alright, mainly decent locals. I didn't get any bad vibes from the employees nor the staff, so that was good. They had exactly what I was looking for, which is great because I'm pretty picky. The surrounding area has a plethora of shops, but I didn't stop there. It's was a great stop along my winter road trip. read more

Wine and product pricing is consistently incorrect, and sales associates at registers are unable to override, needing assistance from courtesy desk that is never staffed. Omar, who runs online delivery is as good as it gets, in terms of customer service and professionalism. I had an issue with an order for my brother, whom recently suffered a stroke. There were certain items that were essential to our order. Omar went above and beyond to make sure that we got everything we needed and more. I felt like we were there number one client. He even called to make sure we got everything we needed. When do you get this kind of care? That seems to he the culture of the Ignacio Safeway. Omar is absolutely outstanding. When folks get older and can't get to the store as much or are dealing with health issues, it's a beautiful thing to have someone like Omar representing your business. He truly cares about folks. He is fut from a different cloth. Being kind and decent and humble and treating everyone with respect and dignity isn't the norm these days. Try ordering online and see for yourself. Novato is slowly or should I say rapidly going down... this grocery store is WAY UNDER STAFFED. It's embarrassing how they run this store and talk to the employees. A cashier was having problems with the register and as usual she called the manager. That night it was a female manager with hair to her shoulders and you can literally tell she was also over worked. She followed with the cashier "iv already told you what to do and you keep forgetting" the face on the cashier was embarrassed and just smiled and the manager finished of with "geez!" And walked away... something needs to change. The manager Aabram was there and I asked if her could help me and he responded with "can someone else help you?" I told him if there was someone else we wouldn't be talking but no there was no one else available to help me... he said he was busy... so I waited and he helped me but poor guy looked stressed. Last time I shop here. Ppl work hard and it's the store manager who needs to make change. A Safeway that's actually clean, well-managed, with friendly employees, and short lines? I must be dreaming! This Novato store is easily the nicest Safeway I've been to in Marin County. I usually shop at the Mill Valley locations. Each of those stores has huge challenges, and I dread shopping there. But this Novato store has a totally different look and feel. The food is well presented. Employees come up to you and ask if you need help finding anything. There aren't 10 senior citizens ahead of you in line who are trying to figure out their pin number and/or redeeming coupons. I came in recently to pick up post-surgery meds for my mother and a few other food/home items. I was in and out in less than 10 minutes! The Safeway is located in a lovely shopping center which boasts great businesses like Super Duper Burger, Sourdough & Co., Toast Restaurant, CycleBar, In 'n Out, and a few other appealing shops/food establishments. There's plenty of free parking in the lot, and you're close to the freeway. Bada-boom Bada-bing. Easy peasy. If I lived closer to Novato, I'd shop at this Safeway all the time! read more

DO NOT BUY MEAT FROM THIS STORE!! HEATH CODE VIOLATIONS ALL AROUND. I find it quit interesting that my review has removed. Well, since I just had to take back more rotten food that I bought from the meat department yesterday, I'll just refresh your memory. For some reason this store fails to put of quality meat. The chicken I have bought here over the years is down right disgusting and I have the pictures to prove it. After speaking with the manager on multiple different occasions and calling corporate nothing has changed but the manager. Now they are selling rotten fish. $23 for three pieces of rotten catfish. Crazy! Then the company goes so far as to cover up there issue by removing reviews showing how nasty and unsanitary they are. Shameful. I'm guessing the problems with this store are due to corporate decisions and not specifically choices by this store's management. But here goes... There is never enough staff. Like other Safeways I have been to, there may be 10 or so registers but there are only two, maybe three people manning them. I always use self-checkout, but it still tells you something about how corporate views its customers and the customer experience in general. They don't care. Their worst sin, however, is to advertise items in their weekly flyer but not have enough of the product around at the proposed sale time for people to purchase. If you are going to have something on sale, it is up to the store to have ordered enough for people, some who have chosen to come in and shop that week BECAUSE there were to be enough sale items to make a trip worthwhile. I base my decision to come in based on enough on-sale items being there and when the store doesn't have them in stock, I feel tricked and cheated. They have wasted my time as well. On a recent trip I noticed that everyone I saw pushing a cart, looked sad. I wouldn't be surprised, if like me, it was due to sale products not being available. Maybe like me they were thinking, "why do I bother?" On a recent Friday, there were three Friday-only specials that I wanted that were not on the shelf. In addition to that, there were some items on sale all week, where they didn't have the full variety of the products. Of Oroweat breads, some varieties weren't there. That wouldn't be so bad but when you are advertising a two for one sale, it might be nice to have some choice for the second one and not have to accept just two of the same item. On the flyer there is often a picture of Schweppe's ginger ale, except the store on Nave never carries that item. I think that if an item is pictured on the flyer the store should order it. Or corporate should use another picture on the flyer that all the stores DO sell. Tonic water maybe? Just be honest folks. You think we don't notice? Well, we do. Making matters worse, is when basic items are out of stock. So often I come in needing a quart of milk, and either the 2% and/or whole milk is out of stock, or the milk is so far back in the dairy box that I can't possibly reach it even if I stepped into the box and stretched out my arm. I have always assumed there were more quarts and it just took someone to add them to the shelves, and that because the store is undermanned, this was not being done. Today I actually saw an employee right where the milk should be and she told me that they were actually out of it. Now, it could be she just didn't want to bother finding some more, because she had other work to do. But that leads us back to the not enough employees issue. I should add that there were half-gallons available at twice the price, Since the milk itself is available, why can't the vendors who produce the milk for Safeway put it into quart-size cartons as well. Is this a Safeway decision to upsell patrons into buying more than they need? I should say that I shop at Safeway primarily for brand name items. For most of my groceries, I shop at Trader Joe's. But Safeway is a constant disappointment. And I don't have the time or the inclination to ask for rain checks. It is not my responsibility to go to great lengths to get the sale price the store has offered. Safeway is not acting in good faith by promising things it has no intention of delivering. Today for the first time it occurred to me that I might check into Lucky grocery in Novato for the brand-name items I get (or TRY to get) at Safeway. I may go there instead for Heinz ketchup or Best mayonnaise, and while I am there maybe even pick up a quart of milk. read more

So it is 3:30pm and I have been waiting for at least 15 minutes to place an order. There is only 1 employee working the kiosk and she is so slow, that by the time she moves her one foot, her other foot starts to stink! There is only 1 customer ahead of me who is "high" as a kite and orders 3 venti drinks plus a cup of water. Now it is 20 minutes and I am still there. When I finally get to order she tells me that there is no iced coffee! It is summer and 84 degrees outside. She does not want to make a regular coffee with a bunch of ice cubes in there instead either. This lady needs to either get retrained or get another job. 20 minutes for 3 drinks and a cup of water is ridiculous plus her unwillingness to get another way of making a drink is unacceptable! It looks like I have to start marking this Safeway down. Despite closing at 11, they would keep the self-checkouts open almost to the end. This makes things much smoother. Now it seems like they are getting the attitude that some restaurants have gotten, of "closing time" means "out the door and on my way home time". Self-checkouts closed early, forcing everyone to the one or two registers open. Everything backing up and the people rushing everyone so they can be out the door at "closing time". I hope the managers pushing this stay on day shifts; may have to start going back to the other Safeway in town more. read more

Chris was temporarily managing this store. He was very rude to me over the phone and completely unhelpful. I was very disturbed by this call and it really gave me a bad taste for Safeway as a whole. He was completely unwilling to be even a tiny bit nice to me, was just one of the most aggravating and infuriating experiences. Please handle this terrible employee. 0 stars. Edit: just want to add a little about the situation for context. I am a disabled veteran and I need the groceries delivered to me. I ordered them the day before and then the morning they were supposed to be delivered, they cancelled 5 minutes before delivery. And then I called and Chris refused to even entertain the idea of them being able to be delivered today. So now I am starving until tomorrow thanks to Chris. You suck man. Check all outdates religiously. Everytime I shop at safeway in general, half the merchandise has been past outdates by days, sometimes week's. This is more noticable on their sales items. In fact, if they are having a sale it's because they have a inventory of rotton and half rotton items they have to ditch. Just yesterday, during their yougurt sale I found a whole stack of yougurts in the front that were 3 weeks past expiry, of course the non expired product was way in the back, seperated. Obviously no one is actually looking at sell by dates. Milk- it looks like the milk section in New England right before a blizzard. Never stocked, half the time its totally empty. You would think that with milk being a basic item they would at least have those inventory levels correct. read more

I want to not complain because I know they worked hard during the pandemic and have staffing issues, BUT today on my pick up order, they made all sorts of bizarre substitutions. Ever since we moved to Novato in the nearby Hamilton community I have done my shopping at this store and have generally had a good experience shopping here. The staff have always been helpful and friendly to me. Not too long ago a new worker. John, started working there as one of the people in charge of collecting the shopping carts. He wasn't shy at all approaching me and engaging me in conversation which made me a bit uncomfortable mostly because his conversation was centered around asking personal questions like, am I married? and other questions on that same level. I have always been polite and mostly just tried to end the conversation quickly and move on. He generally follows me to the parking lot or makes sure he is out there when he sees I am in line and then engages me in conversation outside. Recently he started doing this thing where he says I look sad and asks if I need a hug and then opens his arms ands moves towards me closely. This is way outside my level of comfort and the first two times I literally ducked out of his path and quickly raced to my car. This last time he did the same thing outside asking if I need a hug and I stopped him and assertively told him that it made me uncomfortable when he did that. He stopped and gave me a strange look and said fine and turned around and then under his breath but loud enough to for me to hear said "what do you expect with (you know what's) that look like that" Obviously the you know what's is my nicer way of replacing what he really said. I finally told my husband what I had been going through at the store with this guy and my husband was very calm and supportive. A couple of days later my husband told me that his nephew helped find out more about the Safeway worker and learned he had been fired from a previous job for similar type of behavior with a mentally challenged girl. My husband asked me if I wanted him to get involved but I said I would handle it because I wasn't sure how I wanted to resolve the issue. That's where I am at right now. I am just surprised that Safeway brought someone in to work there with that on their work history record. I may just avoid the store for awhile which is too bad because it is very convenient and really like all the other workers there. read more

Pick up some groceries like bananas, saltine crackers and ginger ale to best help recover from food poisoning. Safeway deliver the goods at club prices along with their own select brands. I noticed they replaced the fireplace at the eating area with a room so the area is smaller now unless you can eat inside the room as well (didn't check). Starbucks, Jamba Juice and bank tellers are inside this location. My complaint are the check out lines tend to be long and slow when you don't want to use the self check out unless it's Friday when it's just as long. Oh yes, $5 Friday is when all Safeway parking lots are filled with vehicles with no available carts. And inside is like a mad house especially at the deli area where there's never enough service with so many people waiting as lunch hour past by and were still there waiting. Sushi made fresh daily are pretty good at this location and don't need to wait unless it's a special order. A dozen donuts for $5 buck is great value right out of their oven early in the morning before the madness begins. read more

Leaps and bounds better to the Ignacio location I used to go to. This one has a Gas station too! For those of you who are not familiar, Safeway gas is one of the cheapest I've seen around. They have a few items on sale every week, usually some ridiculous markdown. They've got a much bigger produce section, with the added space comes much more selection. I'm not sure what some of the other reviewers are on about, there's an entire produce section dedicated to organic veggies. The self checkout is really nice too for when you just want to grab a few items and quickly leave. read more

My husband and I only go here If we HAVE TO (ok actually it's because they are the only place with the turkey bacon we like) This place is always busy and never enough employees. I don't know if more employees would help or not because I have never met a helpful one. It took us 3 tries to get a Safeway card, each employee had a different answer on how to do it (a 4th one didn't even know about it) and in the end they mixed up our phone number with someone else's name. The place is clean and a wide enough selection of stuff (they often double or triple the places they put the more expensive brands so you will find them in several areas of the store, so really it may look like they have a bigger selection) but the employees are slow and not at all knowledgeable. Don't even get me started on the long wait in line. Even if you go at 10 pm and there are only 2 people with a small amount before you, be prepared to wait forever. One more thing...WORST SANDWICHES EVER! It's as if they put their absolute worst employees at the deli counter in charge of making sandwiches. read more
