Don't go in line this employee works on.

Not my photo but I had my own experience with this employee. I understand they're going by policy & need manager power for approval, but there's a better way to deliver your words without sounding like you're having a bad day. It sucks that this is my regular Safeway and it makes me not want to come here any more because of the energy she gives off. She even asked me to put the basket down off the belt rudely. I didn't even do anything but just get in line. There wasn't even a sign to put the basket down to unload. I've worked in customer service myself and sometimes you gotta fake a smile. Someone else might be having a bad day as well. Be kind. UPDATE: I learned through previous reviews that this person name is Elizabeth. This needs to be resolved as this is a trending issue at this location. PLEASE RESOLVE.

The best Safeway in the area... But, is that saying much?! The parking lot is an absolute shitshow! Be very careful. It is very tiny and probably built in 1960 when only a few hundred people lived in Newark now it's a whole strip mall with a bank... Still only 50 or so spots to park. Walking in during any holiday is gorgeous! The flower dept is second to none. You kinda get hopeful that this is gonna be a really nice Safeway. It's your average store. If you know Safeway you know the products and brands. Bakery is good. Deli is fine, they don't all have the same stuff so this deli doesn't carry everything the other's do. Produce dept. is good... Small Starbucks inside... yes, you can use your app... yes you can score your free birthday drink. Didn't see the red xmas cups they're advertising on TV...yet...

Water $1.88!

Honestly, I'm not sure what to think about my local Safeway anymore. In the past year or so, we've had three different store directors running the show. The only one I knew was Karie Lahr, as you would see her around the store and working the customer service and I've chatted with her before about store issues. But alas, she is gone and was replaced by Krystal Canales, but apparently based on reviews below she was not liked at all...and alas, they've gotten rid of her too. Boy, she didn't last long at all, maybe only a few months? Currently, the store director is David DeCosta, let's hope he's liked and hopefully he'll stay and make a difference for our local Safeway. It's hard to see if any changes are really happening when you have so many different store managers running the show. I honestly though Karie Lahr was starting to make a difference here, but now she's gone. She cared about what customers had to say, and always tried ti ensure they left the store satisfied. I guess only time will tell whether or not this Safeway shows any improvements. So far, the lines still are long during certain hours, and they did add more self-checkout machines. Although, some things still haven't improved such as having hand baskets in the front by the entrances, often times you'll see them stacked behind each of the registers, and you'll have to find them there, when they should be in the front. The same goes for the shopping carts, most of the time, they don't have any up front by the entrance, they are all sitting in the parking lot, often times taking up parking spaces as the store only has two shopping cart corrals in the parking lot, when there should be more. Also, I noticed since the pandemic, majority of the staff has changed as well, only a few remaining staff from pre-pandemic, I guess most of them have quit, or transferred elsewhere? Not sure, but mostly see new faces now. Hopefully this store turns it around with new and (hopefully) better management!

Having people wait in a long line to buy food that you can easily get at other stores is ridiculous.

The prices are really good and they have some cool candies, treats and produce options here. The service can either be really good or really bad, there is no in between. No matter the service, I'll be shopping here lol. They also have a decent little restaurant take out section where we got a few items that weren't bad at all. The whole duck is pretty good and they'll even chop it up for you.

You can find better locations throughout the state, but it's still very convenient in this neighborhood and it's been around for decades. The store isn't always the best stop, but they have the deli options and bakery inside. I'm surprised that they only had one cashier inside on a weekday morning before 12noon. Cashier doesn't smile or talk much either. Ambiance is ok, but not as exciting as other locations. Aisles are spacious though. It felt more organized and very clean inside today. I came specifically for healthy 1 Liter coconut beverages and the place had a good variety to choose from. I purchased the $4.49 each Chunguang Coconut Water which isn't always available or easy to find. Each carton contains 3 servings at 60 calories each. Best part is that it includes nutrients. 6% calcium, 10% iron, and 15% potassium in each serving. Nice! Tasted pretty decent and hydrating for the price. Again, this isn't my favorite 99 Ranch location, and most locations are listing items at highest prices, but it's still worth the convenient stop as needed.

We stopped by on a trip as we were passing through and wanted to pick up some snacks. They did have quite a bit of produce, dairy, eggs, breads, cereal, meats, etc, but alas they didn't have the snacks we were looking for, namely chicharones which we eat like chips. I also noticed there weren't that much plants/vegetable seedling starts for sale compared to other GO's. Staff were mostly busy checking customers, but when I stopped a staff to ask for the chips section, he was friendly and pointed the way despite looking busy and on his way to getting something or taking care of some business. The store is on the small side and felt a bit cluttered even though it is organized. There's just not that much space and so some aisles looked kinda of random, with categories of items put together that don't go together that well, for example, having snacks in two different sections of the store. There was not much of a NOSH (natural organic stuff) aisle either, but for a smaller grocery store, it's not bad.

But this is the first Grocery Outlet to enter my area, so I have known of it since the early 2000s. I had just mentioned that this is one of smaller Groc Outs I have ever been in. And for some reason it is harder for me to find things here, or find the right aisles. I think it is because it looks like they expanded their space and took over the space next door. Right when I think I reached the end of the store, the liquor, chips and snacks curl around the corner, not visible from the other side of the store. I'm also not a fan of the parking lot here, just an older style of retail strip type of parking. Tighter and more chaotic when busy. And this location is definitely busy, the neighborhood just fits this grocery mode. Always a line at the registers and just hope they have enough registers open to move lines along. Usually they are pretty good. But the pricing here is still pretty darn good, given you know what you want. I pretty much know what Grocery Outlet is good for and also what to avoid, so I'm not too shocked at their quirkiness. It is actually the draw for me. Newark Groc Out is my alternative but more convenient location. I'll consistently go, but not my choice if I have time.

The past two times I picked up New York steaks, I brought it home and it was slimy on the bottom side and on closer inspection was browning from being too old(I should have checked closer at the store, but I feel like these things should be checked daily by staff.) These steaks smelled horrendous. My last trip I did purchase more steaks and inspected better at the store before taking it home and it was fine. Just be cautious about what you grab and you should be fine. On my last trip, I did pick up raspberries too that were moldy. I ate them when I got home and started noticing moldy ones near the bottom of the tray. I threw them away. I will admit I am too lazy to go return these items, so I do not have a comment on what their return policy is like. In summary, the prices are cool, just be cautious about the individual items you grab. My recommendation to management: Inspect the produce and meats daily, and if possible manage the lines a little bit better.
