They did remodel on this store. It looks really nice now. They generally have most of items stocked and ready to go. Safeway brand items on sale tend to run out the fastest at this store. Go early in the day to get your pickings. Later in the evening you have to fight the crowds that get off work. I went here tonight to look for the San Jose Mercury Newspaper to find the Yelp article. Lo and behold..after asking a few people I found the newspaper stand tucked away in the corner. They have everything here even a newspaper. Don't forget your club card next time you go. read more

Reason's why I would not recommend this store. - Parking is terrible - Checkers are incredibly slow and do not pick up the pace when lines get long - Long lines, never have enough check out stands - Managers try to encourage workers, but workers mock and speak under their breath as manager walks away (in front of customers) - A couple of wokers are good, but generally employees are lazy and uninterested in helping customers. I'm rating the floral dept.. So after walking out of Safeway Fremont Hub, I went to Safeway in Newark. This time, there was someone in the booth, her name is Celaniz. I proceeded to tell her my experience with the other Safeway, she apologized and asked to help me. I told her if I choose a bunch of flowers and a vase, can she put it together. She said yes and no charge. YaY! ..however as she was working on the flowers I noticed from the beginning this lady isnt smiling or warm either. I asked if I can just have fewer of the greens and baby's breath with the flowers and not be charged full extra for these. She declined. By this time I was getting tired of the Safeway lousy customer service experience.. So I let her rang everything and left. I just bought a bunch of flowers on Mother's day and the people working at the floral dept that day were really nice. Where are they now??? I cannot recommend this Safeway branch...I'll have to reconsider coming to this one.. read more

My black mother and I were standing at customer service waiting for help because we just saw an employee behind the counter not even a minute before we walked over and we're ignored by the surroundings. A white female came and stood behind us at the help counter and was helped by the white employee that stood by and watched us use the lottery machine where I said out loud that we needed to see a clerk. This man completely ignores us to help out this female, then says out loud that he'll help her because customer service is closed. He didn't see us standing there? He didn't hear me say multiple times at the lottery machine that we'll need to go to the customer service counter to redeem these winging tickets. Disgusting. Your employees need to undergo inclusivity training again. 4:50pm on a Monday. There's 2 cash registers open along with the self check out. The lines are literally all the way down the aisles to the back of the store. Why? This is a constant issue. Interesting ratings for grocery stores. Safeway on Decoto, UC is my first location, however I like coming to this location for seafood, meat it is always fresher at this location for whatever reason. The deli section is also cleaner and more selections. read more

What makes a supermarket get a better review than another is the customer service. Like Teresa had stated in her review, I had an issue with the self check-out where I got one of those 50% off meat department packages and I needed help to scan it in their machine correctly. The attendant came over and after a couple of tries, helped me get it done and sent me on my way. Now if only they had a place where the line began for self checkout, then it would be perfect. Otherwise, this is a pretty reliable Safeway that anchors this shopping center. Four shopping centers, four supermarket anchoring each area(Ranch 99, Mi Pueblo, Raley's, Safeway). Oh boy, I may just have had the worst customer experience of my life. Yes, I am young and a millennial BUT, I think I have a similar view of this grocery store as do most people who have lived in Newark for 20+ years like me. I have been coming here for as long as I can remember. I used to be a wee little girl scout selling cookies out front. Yes, I am emotionally attached to this store, but tonight was probably my last appearance until a new manager comes and fixes this place up. My boyfriend and I were done shopping for our groceries and there were 4 self check-out machines working and 2 regular cashier lanes open. The lines for each register were through each ENTIRE AISLE, including the self-checkout line! I was appalled. We waited 30 minutes. Once at checkout, I asked the cashier how he was doing and he said he was good, but does feel bad for everyone who has been waiting in line for so long. He has spoken to his manager about how being short-staffed affects the customers multiple times. He told me that the manager, "does not care, will give a customer $25 gift card for their complaint, and move on." Also, the manager disclosed with the cashier that, "This is the only Safeway in Newark, the customers have nowhere else to go so they will still come here." THAT IS ABSURD! This manager obviously does not care about his or her staff or the residents of the Newark Community. Yes, this is the ONLY Safeway in Newark. And I WOULD LOVE to continue shopping at Safeway. Yes, Sprouts just opened up, but they are more expensive and don't have as many options as a more established grocer like Safeway. After hearing that this manager clearly does not care about the well being of the customers or staff, I will not be coming to this store any longer. After this conversation (Yep, that was not the only issue), the chip card reader malfunctioned at the register. MY CREDIT CARD WAS NOT THIS ISSUE. I have seen this happen to many customers at this store as well, but this was a first for me. My credit card was then deactivated because of Safeway's chip reader malfunction. They disabled the function to put the card information manually into their registers recently. This Safeway has clearly not replaced or checked their card insert/swiping machines since the Chip reader has been installed nationwide. Anyways, I spent this Saturday evening skipping dinner because of this catastrophe. Horrible customer service. Came in tonight around 10pm for one item, got in line to check out and the line went all the way to the back of the store. Finally, after being in line for 15 mins I was next in line to be checked out and the female cashier tells me she's going to go on her break and to get into another line... I only had one item and there were only 3-4 people behind me that had also been waiting 15 mins. The right thing to do was to finish her line of customers or she should have told us earlier that she was going to take her break. We asked if we could be put in the front of the other line and she just shrugged and walked away. We had to go to the back of the next line and wait another 10-15 mins and I dunno why I didn't just leave. The aisles were clean and clear enough for me to speed shop around more non-hurried shoppers. They even carried things here that I hadn't seen at other Safeways (three varieties of Uncrustables and two kinds of dark chocolate mini Magnums. Mmmm). This is specifically about a bakery employee today. She was talking to her co-workers behind the bakery counter. She was one foot away with her mask down. It was not covering her mouth or nose. I was going to get a piece of cake. I did not...because of her. How can I trust the safety of the goods the bakery makes, when I see that? I work in a hospital. I am making IVs for Covid-19 patients. I wanted to write a review about this Safeway for a long time now. I stopped shopping here soon as Sprouts opened in the neighborhood. Even before, I was making the long drive to Fremont at Whole Foods and Trader Joes except for emergencies. Not only is Safeway crazy expensive, but this location made me waste countless hours waiting in line. I spoke to managers many times and they said the same thing "we are understaffed". They said they train people and then people don't show up for work. I understand it's hard to make a living in the Bay Area, but how do all the other groceries stores survive?! They have really high prices and low wages, I guess. I wrote a message to the head office about this, but I don't think it'll make a difference. Please support the local Sprouts by shopping there. It's a convenient Safeway location right off State Route 84 and Ardenwood/Newark Blvd. Pretty much your standard supermarket with the usual groceries and frozen foods and various departments (bakery, deli, etc.). Parking is okay overall. read more

I love love love their deli. The Mongolian beef is yummy and spicy. I often go here for their bowl of steam rice plus 1 entree. Less than $5 and beats the blandness of Panda Express across the street. Good variety of produce, although sometimes they're slow in replenishing their goods. Like if they have a special on red peppers, then it goes fast and they don't put more out until you ask. But their produce is always fresh. Lines can get extremely long here. Wish they would open more check outs, staffing issues maybe. Parking is ridiculous sometimes too, especially between 5-7 pm. read more
