Overall the store is large and well stocked for a Safeway. The produce was not great quality, but it is rare to find great produce in most grocery stores now. I was surprised at their limited selection of milk. Most of the bread was wheat, which is fine for me but I could see how others might go elsewhere for more types of bread. The layout of the store near the dairy case was a bit tight and easily blocked by just even by 1 person with a cart. Now for the bit of the downside. The Deli. I have to concur that the service is lacking. I'm not sure of the cause, possibly burnout, but there were 4 people behind the counter with only 2 helping when I arrived. I waited at the hot case area...and waited, and waited. Finally I asked one of the guys working if anyone was helping with the hot case. He yelled over his shoulder "chicken help" and a lady at the other end of the deli said she would be right there. As a customer, I have no clue what their structure is. It would have been very simple for the guy to say "the person covering that section will be right there." I hope the management does a bit more to practice this stuff with employees. I don't mind waiting, but it had all appearances of just being ignored. I have seen this happen to myself and others across MANY Safeways, so it appears it could possibly be a systemic issue in how they train their Deli employees. read more

I never felt so uncomfortable here i always go to Safeway to buy flowers and I never experienced what I did today. I tried asking for some help and tips. The lady with glasses and a mask on at the flower section gave me dry responses then you got your security guard hands folded just watching me can't even look for the perfect flowers for my girlfriend in peace. What gives? So many reviews citing how terrible the service is here. Yet, in all the times I've had the butcher department cut meat for me, it's always been nice & easy. And during crab season, picking a crab & having it wrapped? Never a problem. Always courteous, & a smile. What prompted me to write this review in the first place was the service I received yesterday. I brought my mom for her restocking, & after hearing her say to me that she forgot to ask for paper instead of plastic, the bagger actually offered to re-bag everything. THE BAGGER ACTUALLY OFFERED TO RE-BAG EVERYTHING. And he did so happily, w a big smile on his face. ?! Insane, right? Of course, we didn't make him do it. But, geez... Idk what it is about this place tonight but I asked for an item and the two employees stocking the aisle said they had it but it was behind something or on the bottom of a pallet. So I guess that means they werent going to get it for me. Next time they should just say "No we dont have it" they basically told me they had it but they didnt want to get it for me. Then while I was shopping the stocker gentleman in the area with the orange juice and eggs just slammed his crate he was carrying into my cart and didnt say a damn thing just kept walking and continued on his way like Customers arent supposed to be shopping while he is stocking. Well once again very disappointed in my old favorite shopping place. Everytime I go and say, "maybe it will be better this time", it seems to be worse!! No carts, which they had all these new ones last time, no bananas, no eggs. Is it a stocking issue? A management issue? Supply issue? This morning, I found out that they were fresh out of eggs, and they have been out of eggs for two weeks. They claim it's a national supply issue, but when I called Sprouts across the street, I was able to find plenty of eggs. I am very disappointed with the service I got From the guy at self checkout lane and the other employee working with him. It started as I was heading to self checkout. I had a bag of chicken along with some other groceries, when I looked at the receipt at the end of my transaction I had noticed I was being charged full price for a bag of chicken when it was clearly stated $8.99 I then proceeded to inform the associate about the situation and his first comment was "people put items in different spots to get the discount" (in a very rude, loud manner as he chuckled) I told him I didn't like his attitude. I was really annoyed and told him "what the hell, don't talk to me in that way and how dare you say something like that" (in front of associates and customers over a three dollar difference) I even went as far as walking back to show him a picture and his response was "the weekly add doesn't show this price and I don't like your attitude" I then proceeded to ask him that I want to speak to a manager right away he then told me there will be nothing a manager can do as he was chuckling. Then As one of the mangers began walking toward the front he (self checkout guy) began to mumble nonsense and laugh, thats when I walked up to both of them and showed them the picture. As the manager and I were walking to the customer service area the man (self checkout guy) came to use yelling and said "I don't like his attitude he's got to go" The manager quickly told him to stand back and that he will assist me, but by that time I was frustrated. Frustrated at the fact that this associate would assume that I would need a discount off the meat when clearly it was an sale item. I am not sure why I was singled out and disrespected by this one associate, but then again I am of color and came in after doing yard work, so I am guessing you have a right to judge customer by their appearance? I am a total loyal customer who shops on a regular and even has a fast forward account! I am very disappointed with this employee and his lack of service. The Manager on the other hand was amazing he tried to help with the situation. Until that associate got in the way and interrupted our conversation and accused me of putting a chicken bag in the wrong area and talking to me in hostile manner. I shop here off and on. With the club card and $5 Friday prices are reasonable. Lately the service at deli/sandwich counterhas taken a nose dive. There is rarely more than one person working at the sandwich counter. There is a club turkey sandwich special. I got one last week. The lady who made it for me scoffed when I asked to add pickles. She told me: "it has to be made exactly as it comes." Ummm ok. There was no problem switching out aoili for ranch, but you can't add pickles. I told her that: "you can't add any pickle? I guess I'll just pay for a side of pickles then." She said she would "put them on this time" and literally added two pickles. I gave up. Went back yesterday and waiting almost 15-20 minutes to be waited on. It was lunch time and only one person working the sandwich counter... again. She had to put our order on hold, and help a person that had been waiting for cheese on the other side of the deli. Finally, a woman with nervous energy was walking all fast to wash her hands and take our order. She seemed very rushed and anxiety ridden to me. asked for the turkey club sandwich special for nine dollars. She told me that it had to be made exactly how it came. Fine. She proceeded to put onions on the sandwich, which it did not come with onions. It threw me off and I told her it doesn't come with onions, and I do not want them on there anyways. So as she is finishing making the sandwich, she asked if I want anything else on it. OK I thought it was supposed to come exactly how it appeared? So I looked at the sandwich again and noticed it is missing lettuce. She starts looking at some thing from behind the counter, I think it shows exactly what is supposed to go on it. She adds the lettuce on. So if she was offering to add more things on, I went ahead and told her that I would like pickles on the sandwich. Then she said oh, it's not supposed to come with that. Lol! OK, then why ask if I want anything additional on the sandwich? This was beyond annoying, as this has become a pattern where it's a big deal to get pickles added on a sandwich. She knew I was extremely irritated and started to put the pickles on the sandwich. we had already been waiting a long time to even be acknowledged and I just wanted to get my food. I personally am just going to stay away from the deli from now on, especially the sandwich counter. It's definitely not worth the irritation at all! read more

Out and about in Modesto, I needed a bathroom and some lunch. Safeway is usually a safe option for both. The best part of my visit was the bathroom it was very clean. The store its also very modern and new looking. This store does have a rather small deli section. Most of my normal things I get were hard to find. The layout isn't the same here as the other Safeway's I usually visit. I had to substitute a few items that I would get else where. Not a can of Coke Zero could be found either, just plastic bottles. When I was checking out I noticed that they still had plastic bags. I use my plastic Safeway bags for many things in my house. Where I live they are banned. So I asked the guy if I could have a stack of those bags. He laughed and said I must have lived where they are banned. Yes, I do. He gave me a huge stack! It was awesome! I was just completely embarrassed and mortified by security employees at the McHenry Safeway in Modesto CA. Do not shop at this store! I am from Tuolumne county CA and am staying in Modesto. I was yelled at by a man in plain clothes as I was walking out to make a phone call,"YO YOU TAKING STUFF?!! then a woman in security uniform came up and pointed at a 99¢ store bag I had in hand and says,"YOU DIDN'T HAVE THAT WHEN YOU WALKED IN! Bakery Specific: I am... pretty disappointed. I ordered a cake for my sister's birthday, poor kid is having her second birthday in quarantine. I got a white cake with cream cheese frosting and raspberry filling. I picked it up yesterday so I wouldn't have to worry about leaving today (day of celebration). Of course, you don't cut into a cake until the day you eat it, the hour of, the singing and celebration and excitement- And thats when you find out your order is wrong. The only thing correct was the raspberry. We were given a mixed (??) chocolate and white cake, normal frosting, and while I wasn't concerned they misspelled a word (my sister didn't notice). I have been shopping at Safeway for 40 + years at a few different locations. This store here needs an update soon , But its clean & organized well inside . I like shopping here for their weekly specials/sale ,The Produce ,Meat ,Bakery Departments are very nice and everyone one is attentive to the customers. I find their dairy / cheese isle need some help with selection not the best . Plus the Cookie isle discontinued my Stella D'roro Cookie line ,It's still a great place to go shopping . 12/17/2018. Checker Irene did not even have the courtesy to greet me at the check stand. Was more interested in speaking with a fellow employee about needing time off without being sick. She did not acknowledge me even through my credit card payment. She finally thanked me after I asked for her name. Like the selection here. Not impressed so far with staff. Growing up in the Bay Area and living there most of my life Safeway just seemed like the natural choice when we moved to Modesto. There is a Save Mart one light away but the produce section never has anything near the selection as Safeway. I also like the prices and the convenience that the Safeway membership offers. Points can be used for discounting fuel ups at Chevrons. The staff are all super friendly and the store actually has an armed security guard and in today's times it's sad but that is kind of nice to see when you are out with your family these days. read more

Damned rude employees work there. I went to look at phones for deals and to pick up some snacks. The managers almost bumped into me because they were so busy chatting that they couldn't walk single file past me. The phone display was fairly neat, but didn't seem to have as many choices as other Safeway locations. I went back to the snacks and found the chips I wanted and then, I proceeded to the Asian foods. They had a few things, but none of the UCC Coffee I normally buy and the UCC Green Tea (Matcha!) often had expiration dates that had passed, including one I saw from 2014. Someone needs to rotate stock. The cashier asked me about the tea, but didn't say "Hello" "Thank you" or much of anything else. He also didn't ask me for the rewards card. He was somewhat rude to the lady ahead of me, also. (It wasn't worse than Save Mart at Standiford and Prescott, though.) I went out of my way to visit the store, but if they'd prefer I went to Raley's, that's fine. read more

Bought Chocolate Chip cookies at a good price. Got them home and they were stale and hard. Called customer service and they acted like no big deal. Bring a receipt in and will refund. The point being, they were packaged on Dec 23 '22 and were supposed to be good until 2-8-23. Today (2-4-23 )they are stale!!! So it's ok to sell them for 4 more days!!!!! The grocery pick up service here is great! Whoever picks out the items does an amazing job of ensuring food is fresh and good quality. I have been ordering grocery pick up frequently due to how convenient it is and this is by far the store with the best pickup experience. The only reason for the one missing star is the store does not communicate that an item is out of stock, so you don't know you didn't receive an item until you get home and look through the papers they gave you. Worst customer service. I was at the "customer service desk" waiting patiently for 10 minutes. I was finally approached by security and asked if I had been helped, told him no. He called a gentleman that didn't acknowledge me and told him I'll be there in a second. I turn around he's in a register. I'm then told by another employee I'll have to wait 30 minutes. I approached the "manger" and he said I'll help you after his line. I waited another 10 minutes and he get out of one check stand and let an employee out for break. I then approached him and asked him when I would be helped and he said he wasn't going to, That' I'd have to wait. I understand people go to lunch and breaks but don't give a customer the run around and then flat out tell them they're not going to be helped. They need to wait for someone else to help them. I asked for the store manager and I was told, "you can call her but she won't do anything about it, she doesn't care" I 100% will give my money and time to Sprouts/SaveMart before Safeway again. read more

I usually love shopping here & I also usually never write reviews but today I experienced & witnessed some pretty disrespectful treatment from a cashier. Julie had a very condescending tone telling me that I needed to unload my hand held basket (already on the belt) before she can check me out. I've worked in grocery for years!! So i definitely don't mind & can understand to a degree - the tone however was unacceptable & made me uncomfortable. (i don't think it really made a difference who unloads the little basket either, very unnecessary thing to make a customer do) Then as I was checking out I overheard her being super bossy & rude to the bagger. There is a way to help someone & provide guidance without being rude, especially in an entry level job like this, there's no reason to speak to someone with such a tone because it is not that serious. Getting down on a coworker over something as little as knowing where to find something in the store? She told the bagger "you should know that already" after being asked a simple question. More like she should know better than to treat others like that. Please inform your employees to be helpful, not disrespectful because I've been in the bagger's shoes & it's a shitty feeling. This is by far the worst Safeway I've ever been into. Long lines difficult parking but the worst meat department I've ever seen for a Safeway. I shop at Safeway in Newark California and their meat department we'll put this one in Modesto to shame. Someone needs to check up on these guys and make sure they're getting the best meat possible. I thought Harris Ranch was not far from here!. Yes, their deli department is very slow but that happens when they only put one person to operate the whole Deli! They are understaffed and customer service is horrible. Go to Winco, Save Mart, Food Max, Smart and Final, and you will be better off. The only thing I can say is that Safeway is the ONLY store open on Christmas Day and the lions are over 75 to 100 people at a time on Christmas Day! read more

This is for my visit tonight 10/23/20 at 7pm. I walked in for a cake, found the cake (it was in the glass case). No one in the bakery dept. I walked to the checkout to ask if someone could assist me with the cake in the glass. I was told that a manager would be right over. Looked down, 7:08pm was the time. Patiently waiting there, a worker comes up as he's putting things back on shelves, asked if I was getting help. Stated that I let the check out clerks know I needed help and a manager was coming. Sweet boy went to follow up, comes back says the manager in on their lunch and has 10 min left. So okay coo. Another shopper comes to bakery and looks at cakes then asks me if someone's coming. Told her the dude said 10 min, 5 min ago so I'm sure another 5 min. Both of us now waiting and more people approaching... still no manager. So I decided to CALL THE STORE, I told her I've been waiting for almost 30 min for said bakery worker or manager to arrive. She puts me on hold to check up, comes back and says "hey okay someone's going to me right there." Okay finally!! Manager/sup comes walking up and I start to tell him what happens and he says "oh no one told me till about 5 min ago. This isn't my department so I really don't know where things are." Uhm..? What?! Aren't you a manger of the store? Shouldn't you kinda know where things are? So he finally gets the cake in a box after another couple min. Alright so I've been mixed about Safeway in the past, goofiness like they were perplexed by clay cat litter (you know, the cheap stuff?) I digress. Today: the crew earned their pay. Masked up, grabbed a sanitized cart (thanks for that by the way!) and headed in...I had to use the restroom so i went to the area, there are social distancing marks on the floor, not knowing if it's supposed to be one at a time or just not pile on eachother I opened the door only to be literally bumped into by another customer who was NOT wearing a mask. I finished up and she made a point of washing her hands in both sinks and using paper towels (like she was trying to touch everything) then she left the bathroom and proceeded to walk around the bakery then onto the meat (where the crew spotted her) and then produce...she wasn't buying anything, just being a nuisance...they said something to her (it was polite) something like "masks are required in the store, can you please put one on?" she dug in her purse like she had one but then proceeded to call who knows who to complain about them confronting her. Businesses have a right to serve who they wish. This store has a sign at the door that is very clear. I must commend the staff for approaching her, her behavior was making many uncomfortable. All that said, produce is always great, meat is always great and deli food is always great (I order instacart from here too) if you join their club you save a great deal of money today my bill started at 68 and dropped down to 49. thanks all. read more

We just finished buying $300 worth of groceries and the checker started ringing up the customer behind us before the bagger was anywhere near finished bagging our groceries. We were even helping bagging! She literally started placing the items of the customer behind us on top of our items. I said something and she seemed confused. The customer behind us was trying to explain to her what was his and what was ours. So ridiculous and unnecessary! Is it really too much to ask that they help and finish with one customer before moving on to the next??! This store is so poorly run I absolutely hate having to stop here ever. The pharmacy is terrible. They never have your medication's on time and they believe they will fill prescriptions at their leisure. Both pharmacy staff and store staff are very rude. They do not seem to know what is going on. There are never enough checkers, often I have to go find my own cart in the parking lot, the checkers are slow and since the new law on bags...nobody knows how to bag anymore.
