Today, my mixed daughter and I went to the deli for some meat. While I went to get something from the aisle, my daughter waited. When the lady called my order, my daughter tried to explain and get it, but the employee refused to talk to her. This happened again when another woman, who is African American, tried to help. Only when a white, blonde-haired woman intervened did the employee speak to someone. As a white person myself, I didn't experience this issue. This is disgusting, and you need to train your employees. I will be contacting corporate. My 15-year-old daughter has never experienced this behavior, and I will not tolerate it. read more

Customer service is horrible. I did a pick up yesterday & groceries were missing. I didn't have a lot of time because I'm planning my brother's memorial. I went to pick up the missing & the girls in that dept. could of cared less. Told me to go get what was missing like it was my fault ! I have shopped in the La Plata Safeway for many years. However, I am not ever going back. The employees are rude and they don't want to service the customers. I use the app that Safeway puts out and the prices are always wrong and the items that they give you that are supposedly free or never in stock. The employees don't want to be there and it spills over to the customers. read more

My order was lost and curbside service closed at 8:03. Multiple managers said they could offer no solution since that was a separate department. After the end of the call, A Drive Up and Go employee left work and began to call my personal cell. I immediately reported her actions; ut again the managers had no solutions. No food, no courtestly call and harassing employees. Not a good look. read more

The ladies in the deli department were amazing! My family was in the middle of a tragedy and we suddenly had to feed about 50 people. We came in to this store and needed a lot of sandwhich fixings. My all time least favorite place to go. I use to love Safeway but with recent events I will never and never is a long time go to this store. It's expensive compared to Giant and Weiss in the area and they have a gas station attached. So the incident that happened is mostly racially motivated and I for one hate talking about stuff like this but it happens. My sister who is African American went to get gas and the young didn't have a name tag or manners for that matter. But anyway she paid for her gas and when she asked for her receipt he motioned for her to get the receipt off herself. When she asked his name he walked away and sat down and then went back to his phone. The entire time then gas station manager had been in the back office. When she left out a caucasian woman walked into the station and he rung her up and handed her the receipt. We called and spoke with the store manager who then told us she would handle it but she could not give us anymore knowledge as to what would happen with the young man. Now here is my thing. He should be fired he was rude and racist is this what LaPlata Safeway is about? You never know who people know or what they do and clearly he has made a mistake. Treat others how you want to be treated. Lesson here go to Giant or Weiss! read more

They have the best grocery selection in the La Plata area, and consequently I shop here often. BUT there are a few things that could be done to improve the store, starting with some targeted staff training... I avoid one particular checker there. I know from experience that she stops checking groceries for minutes at a time to engage in conversations with customers, often about her personal business. I appreciate friendly, but most employees can continue scaning and make light, polite conversation. Not this person. Her delve into personal issues, such as complaining about her fellow employees, makes me uncomfortable, and I will get in a longer line to avoid her. Unfortunately today the only non-self check-out line that was open the light was on nobody was there, so I'd already unloaded groceries on the belt (per the manager's direction) when this certain checker appeared. She proceeded to grumble about how -- unlike her fellow employees -- she doesn't sit around doing nothing when nobody's in line and that they sure know where to find her when they want something. Then she muttered that it was "time to move on." Then she stopped checking groceries to have a conversation with a man who was at the ATM 20 feet away. She informed him that she just bought a boat and was going down to Hatteras and invited him on a fishing trip. She stopped the checking process again later to write a long note to herself and put it next to the cash register. She had one more conversation with the man about the fishing trip (during this time she has stopped checking groceries). She also talked about losing her parents. Yes that's hard, but it is an inappropriately intimate topic of conversation for somebody whose groceries you are checking (or in this case not checking). I think management needs to counsel this employee . Ive seen other customers wince and look uncomfortable when this cashier stops and asks direct questions or makes comments. As far as selection goes, the organic produce section often has good items but sometimes the produce is old. Probably it has lower turnover, but still, I'd rather pay a bit more to have fresh items. Finally the restrooms really need to be upgraded and remodeled. There should be paper towel dispensers. Everybody knows by now that air dryers just blow germs all over the place. The doors on the stalls are not properly aligned, the tile is chipped, there's one soap dispenser for two sinks (and it's not in the middle, so you have to reach over or walk around another person to get soap). Sometimes this restroom does not smell fresh, although today it sparkled and smelled like bleach, which was refreshing. This store really has a lot going for it. For the most part staff are friendly and professional and the products and selection are good. With a few tweaks it could really be a great place. read more

I have been shopping at the Giant in Laplata recently and decided to check out the Safeway nearby. It was pretty disappointing actually. The salad bar items didn't appear very fresh, the aisles were very narrow making it difficult to maneuver a cart around other customers, and the cashier didn't even greet me. As I loaded up my items to scan, the cashier never acknowledged me but was much more interested in her personal conversation with another employee who was also unfriendly. I won't even mention their names because it seemed none of the employees were happy working there. I doubt management would ever address poor customer service. Anyway, I'll continue going to Giant where the variety is very good, aisles are easy to navigate through and every single cashier I've had has been excellent. Safeway should take notes. read more

Love this Safeway, it's the best Safeway in the county. The produce and meats are always fresh. This Safeway is well stocked and clean. I am a big user of the Just For you savings coupons and I can always find the free advertised items in the store. read more

What can I say. It is the the best store in Charles County, but it is not great. I think it is a junk hole. There are so many cardboard displays you can barely get through the store. The only think decent about the store is the produce department. It is the best in Charles County. With that said, I usually go to Alexandria to do my shopping a Harris Teeter or Whole Foods. read more

This is a great supermarket. I work close by and go regularly for their salad bar and fresh made sandwiches. Salad is fresh and sandwiches are fantastic. The groceries are great. Nice selection. Produce is always fresh and I think they have everything. If you're not a Safeway Club member, you'll pay a lot. Membership is free. read more

This place always smells good whenever I go. I used to always go here with my mom when I was a kid and lived near by. The bakery is my absolute favorite part about this place ! I have always had a great experience with Safeway in La Plata, until I went to the Bakery department. My first run in involved having a cake made for my son's birthday. They didn't have many selections for cupcake cakes (for kids) and I asked if they would be able to add characters to the cake to make it look a little better and they told me no (they couldn't do it)...the baker could only do what was exactly on the page (so no creativity). So I said fine...they just did a plain cake in a shape and added happy birthday...they also didn't let me change the colors... Once I received the cake it looked exactly the way it did in the picture (which was fine) and the cup cakes were stale. I know they freeze the cakes but the cupcakes were very stale (maybe left in the freezer for a long time?) My second run in was again finding a birthay cake and I first went to Giant becuase I knew that I was not happy with Safeway and I couldn't find any cupcake cakes (they were all valentines cakes) so I decided to run back to Safeway and give them a second try (maybe it was a fluke). So I went there and saw plain cakes with bordering and I asked someone if I would be able to get the characters so I could put them on and I was told no...the baker doesn't like doing that and they didn't write on it...I was so upset I just left. So unfortunetly it will take me a while to go back to safeway...I am sad that the bakery has swayed my decision from going there for groceries. read more

I went into the Safeway grocery store in LaPlata,MD about 9:50 am 6.24.2016. I went in to purchase milk for $1.19, like I do most mornings (since I work next door). I checked out in the self check out line the 1st register on the right in the front. As I scan my one item and placed the milk in the bag, hit the finish and pay. I had already inserted most of my money like except for the two pennies ($1.19). The cashier manager walked over to me opened my bag, and said , Oh, I was wondering what milk you got for $1.00? I looked at her and asked don't you work here? Than you should know what milk is on sale for $1.19 with the club card. The cashier reply was oh, b/c I only purchase the specialty milk for 79 cents . Than you shouls know what milk is $1.19. I felt a little uncomfortable, and stereotype. The cashier walked over and opened my bag, not a hello, or a warning, you just walked over an open my bag as I was paying. I went and expressed my concerns to thd store manager. The manager indicated he would speak to cashier area manager. Over all its a nice grocery store for emergency picks. I don't grocery shop at Safeway, my preference is Wegmans grocery store. I give this store a 2.5 rating. I'm sure I am not the first person. read more
