I like going to Safeway to buy a few items like reasonably priced organic whole milk I had to buy for my one year old and other items you can't find at Foodland, or a similar grocery store. It also helps to have a Vons/Safeway card to get good deals on your purchase. I basically came here when I needed to buy items I didn't want to buy in bulk(Costco). P.S. This is a nice Safeway store with a good selection. Prices are reasonable by Hawaii standards. Don't be fooled by the sales though. The Safeway Club Card price is even higher than the regular price in most Mainland grocery stores. read more

For you Californians Safeway=Vons so make sure and enter your phone number for your card discounts! A great tip by an employee, a former San Diegan. I compared the 2 stores (Fooodland and Safeway) Safeway prices are better on what is important to me. Soda, dairy, DELI. The chicken tenders are a must! Go early they sell out but you can still buy them 'fresh' in the deli cooler. Great in the microwave at midnight. Puff puff pass. We got a 20 pack of soda for the price of a 12pk. Honey roasted macadamias are a must. Great on the go deals for Gatorade and trail mix too. Monsters and Beer are priced decent as well. Safeway over Foodland for the exit light too. The employees are awesome to all shoppers not just 'locals'. read more

Very mainland style, with super high priced items everywhere. But that's the downside of vacationing on an island, I guess. Just be prepared to pay through the nose - I did not get a whole chicken - it cost $ 15.86 for one! Whew, that's a lot. They do have a large variety of Kauai only fruit - you've got to try the Candy apple banana at least. Papayas are your best bet for fresh fruit. I was worried about how locals fare with these prices! But you will find everything from mainland here. Try the Marich chocolate covered pistachios and blueberries - I've not seen them before and they were quite good. Quick travel tip: IF you can, pack in everything you could think of in those little condiment packages - there are very few options as far as trial sizes go -I left behind 95% of all the packaged (jars/bottles) sauces, condiments that I thought I would use. Our cashier was little bit lost in space, sadly. She missed the one item we wanted (some chocolate) and I ended up having to return for ti. She also did not know how to ring up a bag of fruit that was clearly marked $6/bag (Satsuma mandarins). Maybe Saturday nights are when all mainlanders get in and it was kind of busy but still, not the right time to be so laid back when we're just trying to get the heck to the hotel. LOL. read more

When I stay at the Waipouli Beach Resort I come here first and stock up the kitchen. It is nice having a grocery store that is similar to the one I shop at in Sacramento. It is usually quicker to walk across the street than drive. read more

We visited both grocery stores in Kapaa - Foodland (local) and Safeway (Chain). Both have a wide variety of foods and prices are about the same. Safeway seemed cleaner but our wait for a cashier was longer. Since they are right next door to each other, it's a toss-up. Both are just fine. read more

Bring your Safeway card and watch the prices! I was able to buy the world's most expensive onion $3.19/lb! Seriously inflated prices appear on items throughout the store while other are comparable to what you find back home. They do have a decent variety of meats, fish and fruits but be prepared to shell out a lot of cash! read more

Large selection of healthy foods and produce, as well as to-go items like sushi and hot bar items. I loved the local finds, like Kaui kombucha. A good place to go if you're staying in Kauai for a week, need groceries, or just need quick food. read more

This review is of their Bakery and not the grocery store proper. I love Safeway as a grocery store but I had a nightmare experience with their Bakery. I work for a local hotel and ordered a birthday cake for a 6 year old child who was coming with her family to Kauai to celebrate her birthday. I called a day in advance for an 8-inch round cake to be picked up by 3pm the following day. The girl loves hula dancing and asked if they can give it a hula theme. The said they could not. Okay... so instead I asked for a basic design. It looked fine when it was picked up but it was noticeably warm, as if was fresh out of the oven. By the time it made to the hotel, the frosting had completely melted off the cake and the filling was oozing out. While I'm not a professional baker, it is fairly obvious that you need to let the cake cool completely BEFORE you frost it. If you don't let it cool, the heat will melt the frosting as easily as better melts on warm toast., as frosting is mostly butter. Fortunately for the guest, we were able to get a nice 8-inch cake from Foodland for about $4 less and was better quality than what I ordered from Safeway. While I like the grocery and their prices, don't use their bakery, not unless they hire more experienced bakers. read more

Go to Foodland! My wife asked why there were no plastic bags. The checker accosted her with a lecture at the top of his lungs about keeping Hawaii beautiful. Almost everyone in the story was cringing at his speech. Funny thing is - at home we always bring our own grocery sacks and despise the plastic 'prayer flags' that pop up along our highways. We shopped at Foodland the next time and was very happy with more of a local atmosphere - go there instead. Life is too short to deal with a militant checker over a loaf of bread. read more

Yeah- as I expected in an international grocery chain- they are the same everywhere. With few, subtle differences. For example- they are not huge on hot soup or a deli or a big display of harvest pumpkin decor. It's still pretty pricey, and as with back home I'm sure I could find a locally owned, cheaper alternative. A fact most tourists are also probably aware of. But on vacation, there is something really comforting about finding a look a like. And surreal. It was mostly surreal. Their quality never waivers. Yes they buy foreign produced and under ripe fruit and veggies-at an eye brow raising mark up- but that doesn't change. So there is reliability. And yes- everything here ( even with the mark up) is much cheaper than food at the Aston. We didn't have a car while here so we stocked up. Side note- compared to Washington (and I imagine other Continental states) you can buy alcoholic beverages ( in bottle form) really, really cheap. You want to know what a nasty bottle of premixed Mojito runs ya at a State appointed liquor store? 26.99- two years ago. That is another cool thing about Hawaii. read more

We ordered a small cake for the three of us. It was our son's fourth birthday. Debbie took my order and had good ideas for the little cake. Arnold, the cake decorator, made the cutest cake! He fit everything I asked for. The cake had a nice buttercream frosting not the usual icky grocery store sugary kind. The chocolate cake was very good, as well. And it was all made by the next morning. He did a great job and it was only twelve bucks! read more

Like everything in Kauai, scary expensive- man, don't know how you can afford to eat if you live in Hawaii. Biggest disappointment here is if you get there after 3 in the afternoon, half the stuff you might want to buy is out of stock- forget about milk or fresh ground beef by then. Guys, you'd sell even more stuff if you'd stock your shelves a little. If you want to find everything you're looking for in a more brightly lit environment, try Foodland next door. Oh, and sign up for the discount card- it makes the pain of what you pay slightly less to get a tiny discount. No different from Safeways on the mainland. Prices are island appropriate. I prefer the Foodland in Princeville for Poke, but Safeway has bigger aisles. It is difficult to get out of the parking lot at times. read more

We stayed at a resort with kitchen so we needed basic grocery and tried this grocery store... Damn expensive!! Has everything, if you have vons account it counts here. But it is very expensive!!! $11 dlls for a bag of grapes??? Ouch, bought them but it hurt my wallet, we later found another grocery store with the same amount of grapes for $6 dlls. (Won't mention other store for this establishments respect) But look for other prices, didn't go back! read more

It tends to be very crowded but what do you expect with so many visitors to Kapa'a. Prices are decent for the area. Service is good (when you can find someone to assist). Note to tourists: sign up for the Safeway card before you purchase to reap discounts. read more

It's Safeway. You can find the usual items that you would expect and it is surprisingly cheaper than Foodland! I went to Foodland first, because it's where I am accustomed to shopping at whenever I'm in Hawaii, but they offered ZERO organic options (boy, has my food preferences changed!)... so Safeway gets an extra star for carrying organic stuff. Poke is like shave ice - you can buy it on the mainland, but it's just not the same as in the islands. Now there are many places in Kauai (or Maui) where you can buy "the best" poke. However, you'll pay usually dearly for that privilege in cost or travel time. On the other hand, you can head over to the fish counter at Safeway where the locals sell a fresh quality product for $9.99 a pound (Costco charges $16.99). They also carry at least a dozen different varieties (Besides the original ahi version, I'm partial to the tako with kim chi.) As others have noted, this is also good spot for mainlanders who are not Costco members (but have a Safeway or Vons card) to get their grocery supplies for the week without needing to rob a bank. read more

The worst meat department by far, and it seems to have gotten continually much worse the last few years!...The meat smell lately as well is enough to not go back again, Costco is where to shop for meat, for sure....!, always fresh, looks and tastes way better than Safeway in Kappa! read more
