I've been using Safeway for close to 7 years now and they used to be so good. However for the last 6 months or so they have really dropped the ball. I'm disabled so I always use delivery. Lately they just cannot get my order right. Every week I am calling for refunds after they omit items, sub items without informing me, or they give me terrible quality items. One time they packed my bread UNDER the bag of apples, another I rec'd cabbage instead of lettuce, and in another I rec'd cilantro instead of parsley. I love their pharmacy but the rest of the store is horrible for the delivery service. Just today there were 3 items omitted. I cannot shop like this anymore and will be changing my store. I have held off providing a review of this store for over a year. However, today, I was met with having to pay to use a shopping cart. In addition, the hand carts were removed for customer use. This is a store I occasionally shop. This store is poorly managed as evidenced by the lack of cashiers, groceries and now the customer must pay to use the carts. I'm over it. Safeway do better. The charging, even though your quarter is returned is tacky at best! Let me get back to Wegman's, Trader Joe's and Whole Foods! read more

I shop here regularly and have always had great experiences. Whether it's shopping in-store or ordering online, it's been very positive. The store is clean, the food is fresh, and service is great. Three times I've placed online orders and they've always been complete and on-time. In fact, they've been ready before the promised time. When there are substitutions, they call them out so I'm aware before leaving the store. The young lady and young man who handled my orders have always been professional and fast. The guys in the Meat Department are always friendly and responsive to anything I'm looking for, even pointing me to specials and markdowns on the items I buy most frequently. Our family likes the subs. When they're OOS on a sub we want, the ladies in the Deli Department make it fresh right in front of me. I'll continue to show at this store. read more

Above and beyond! Thank you Safeway team! I accidentally put my delivery order in as a Pickup. I am elderly,disabled and don't drive. I called and Jariah answered swiftly taking stock of my problem and sought out the store manager We were disconnected but when I called back Nhu the store manager answered, addressed me by name and assured me she would handle it immediately. She asked my address then offered to bring it right to my door on her way home!! That was just a couple of hours ago and she just left after bringing the heaviest bags to my front room! They were expertly packed by Jay with extra care given to one item that I rarely treat myself to. Nhu wouldn't accompany and didn't want recognition but said she would love her " team" to be acknowledged if I were to post a review. This act of kindness couldn't have come at a better time in my life. I've been gravely ill and unable to eat since Xmas Day. It also saved me money which is such a blessing as I live on a fixed income. Way to go Safeway, I love the products,prices,ease of ordering and now I have finally met the Angels behind the scenes that made this old lady's day a lot brighter! DO NOT ORDER FLOWERS FOR DELIVERY ONLINE BECAUSE YOU WILL NOT GET ANY! I placed an order online at 8:50 AM NOV 18, 2024. Safeway advertised "same day delivery " and charged me $9.99. NO FLOWERS WERE DELIVERED NOR ANY COMMUNICATION. THE ORDER WAS SIMPLY FORGOTTEN! I waited until Tuesday Nov 19th after 5PM and still no delivery! I ask for a refund which was given and no explanation as to what happened and no apology for poor customer service. This should be categorized as NO SERVICE instead of poor customer service. This location is fairly new, well maintained, brightly lit, and clean and has its own dedicated parking lot with 2 hours of free parking without validation (even though the signs all say "with" validation). After that, the 3rd hour starts at $5. There is also outside street metered parking. Love that it was not crowded at all on a Monday afternoon. Aisles were clear, shelves were well stocked, produce was fresh, and overall neatly presented. The store cashiers were friendly and efficient. I would definitely return to this location. read more

This new Safeway that had been under construction for more than a year is finally open. It's on my way home from work, and on the right side of the road unlike the Giant further up the road from here. Parking: when heading west on East West Hwy turn right before you pass it and enter the parking garage. Today there was an attendant directing you to go up a level. I think once the hubbub of the newness of this place dies down, there will be a ticket system. I recommend always going to the upper open air level unless it's pouring out. There's plenty of parking up there, and the entrance leads you in by the produce section. There is a sign that says 2 free hours of parking with validation. Who grocery shops for two hours? I guess they want to stop metro riders from parking for free. It is something like $5 without validation. So of course it was clean and well stocked for opening day. It was really busy, especially around the seafood counter. Crab legs were $4.99/lb. they really need a ticket system here. It was a mob scene. The lines were long and I think every line was open. There is no self serve line, but they have several express lanes. You form one line for these like most Whole Foods do, but... people were confused where to stand as the line snakes out. They need a roped area. The line started to fork, and I didn't want to get into a brawl, so I went to one of the long lines and waited... They have a Starbucks, an Asian food bar, and lots of ethnic foods. In the deli area, they have food from local local vendors. I bought a veggie samosa from a place called Nanas Kitchen. Haven't tried it yet, but for $2.99 it is worth giving it a shot. I was surprised that they didn't have anything special going on for their opening day debut. It would have been nice if they had special deals for this location only. I know the Safeway in Wheaton did. Maybe a grand premiere celebration is yet to come. read more

This is probably one of my favorite Safeway's in the D.C. metro area. I enjoy this location for a few reasons: Parking - free garage parking w/o a stamp needed for validation. Produce/Flowers - they literally have the largest selection of fresh produce I've seen. They have a ton of chopped and packaged fruits and veggies. The fridge also has "healthy" juices and organic spinach/kale cartons. Their flowers are always fresh and pretty... great selection of $5 flowers. Hot Bar/Deli - the deli area has a nice selection of fresh meats and sides in addition to the refrigerator of pre-made sanwhiches. They have a sushi chef who puts out fresh sushi in the morning. They even have two hot bars if you're looking for cooked lunch or dinner. Now to the things that prevented me from giving this location 5 stars: The Staff - the staff ALWAYS gives me a hard time about something, rather it be a coupon I'm using or my deli order being incorrect. I've had a couple bad experiences with attitudes and such. Flow of the store - I spend more time than I should in here because the isles are set up so weird. I have a hard time finding what I need right away, especially in the first few isles by the produce. At this point I could have went in the store and did my own grocery shopping and checked out by now. I even had to call to see if they were coming and was told that they would page them. The new Safeway is disappointing. Yes, this area was sorely in need of a new grocery store, and we've been waiting for this Safeway to open for....roughly 8 years now? (the construction on the store was supposed start before the great recession hit). Still, I've experienced much better- here's why: Service: slow and mediocre, which Safeway is known for. Checkout lines are consistently long and slow; checkers haven't been trained very well. I know a lot of them are new, but the company, which is actually Albertsons, didn't take the time (or money) to train them so they can get people through the lines quickly. Thus, you usually have a 10+ minute wait to purchase your items. BTW, the Greenbelt Safeway isn't much better, and that's been there for decades, so I don't see this store changing the long lines issue any time soon. P.S.- where are the self-check out registers? Wake up, we're in the 21st Century Albertsons executives!! Prices: high. Higher than Giant's prices down the road, higher than the Greenbelt Safeway. A 59 ounce container of Tropicana Orange Juice is about 70 cents more expensive than comparable stores. Deli meats are higher per pound, miscellaneous items like soap, and other personal hygiene items are expensive. Ice cream is higher. Store lay out: it stinks. Even when the place isn't busy, certain areas like the sandwich counter, deli counter, pharmacy area, and (of course) front area where you wait forever to check out, are crowded and difficult to navigate with a cart. The vertical aisles are narrow also. They simply packed too many services and products in a large but not-large-enough store. Shame on you, Albertsons!! The overall ambiance is also not very conducive to a pleasant, enjoyable shopping experience. Everything from the flooring to the shelving is too pale. Even the lighting is not inviting. They did a lot of cost and corner-cutting on the store atmosphere, and they'll regret it later (i.e.- interior rehab. in 5 years). So, I won't be shopping here unless I really need to. And this store better improve, because when Whole Foods, Lidl (sister of Trader Joe's), and possibly Harris Teeter opens up this fall and next year (or even "years"), shoppers will wander. There's little customer loyalty in the grocery business unless you have an outstanding store with excellent customer service. The new Safeway doesn't even come close to either of these! read more

This review is for the Pharmacy. I came into this location last Thursday. I went to the Pharmacy to inquire about the transfer/new prescription program. If you transfer a new prescription to a Safeway pharmacy, you are eligible for a $25 gift card. You need to have a Safeway card as well to get the promo. So I went up to the pharmacist to ask about the promotion, and she responds by telling me that it is for new prescriptions and you can't have government insurance. I'm thinking to myself that's fine as I have health insurance through my employer. I guess I had a puzzled look on my face, so she proceeded to list the types of government insurances. At this point, I'm like okay thank you, and I left. That exchange left me feeling so bad. I'm like wow, this woman dared to sit up here and think that I couldn't possibly have health insurance through an employer, but that, of course, I must be depending on the government for my Health Insurance. Wow. I have no words. Will never use this pharmacy with or without a promo code. CVS is right across the street, and I'll take my prescriptions there. read more

Wow...the Safeway just opened and glad to see all the reviews here. While I won't be putting away my Giant card anytime soon (Giant meets my personal needs and is typically less costly), I'll tell ya what I did like about the new Safeway. It's clean..! That said, I'm a sales rep and I've started using them to order light meals and pastries for client meetings--something I would never do with Giant. The presentation is simply better. Bottom-line, where this Safeway really shines is in the prepared meals category...offering a lower price point (but less foodie options) than say the new Whole Food's will (when it opens.) What I REALLY don't like is the parking..! It's a lot clumsier approach from the street than Giant. Feels like I'm trying to get into a Wegman's (a true lifestyle store) without the Wegman's gustatory payoff..! With Safeway and other grocery stores in that class--I wanna be in and out. This store was near where I worked for a month this year. I would go just about every day to hit Starbucks for a beverage and buy lunch or a snack or just to browse. Very good selection and I discovered that my Hannaford rewards number could be used to save money (they are apparently in the same "family" of stores), so I was super psyched to buy things there. I used self checkout and it was fast and efficient and the staff would say hello and good bye. Loved this place! I miss the discounts! read more

Welcome to the neighborhood! Glad to see we have another supermarket to compete with Giant and force them to step up their lacking services. Went on opening night and was pleasantly surprised. Not all the workers knew where things were located but I could actually find somebody to ask, they actually wanted to help, and they were friendly the whole time. Seems like what should be the bare minimum from a decent grocery store but, alas, these things don't happen at Giant very often if ever...and it is right down the street so I or probably won't be going there much more. The whole layout was nice and similar to other Safeways except is is huge compared to those in DC (where most of the new people are moving out of). We used to have a Safeway across the street from us and this new one is much better. The produce was tailored to the larger Latino population in the area (I like this), aisles had everything stocked, meat section was a bit small for such a large store, frozen section was quite big, bakery was amazing, and glad to see a coffee shop area. Plenty of parking too for the time I went but not sure how it will hold up with the area when other stores open. Overall I am very happy to see this much awaited addition to the area! So I love this safeway. This area needed a 24 hour supermarket. I am the type that enjoys going shopping at midnight, or going to the store at 6am before work so this is perfect for me. I think the prices are reasonable and their fruit bowls save my life. You never have to struggle for parking which is also great. Only problem I had here was one time I visited here at like 6am and left my wallet on the counter by the register. In line behind me there were two individuals in line. I came back about four minutes later and went to the same register (only register open because its 6am) and asked the teller did she see a wallet I had just left...she responds saying no. I ask her is there a manager or anyone I can talk to that can maybe pull footage since I know exactly when and where I lost my wallet..she wasn't much help. Stated no manager was on site and stated nothing was left (but I knew I left it there). I loved that MK wallet but luckily my major cards were all in my pocket. The follow up/support/knowledge on how to handle situations like that could be better. I could have called the cops or something, but I did not. I left my contact info but no one ever reached out. Check your reciepts! All the time things ringup wrong! I frequent your store on a regular basis, and time after time items I purchase ring up incorrectly. This is extremely annoying and frustrating as I have to go back inside wait in line and speak with a customer service representative to show them the item rang in incorrectly. This is extremely annoying and frustrating seeing is how all I want to do is go home and put away my groceries. Today's experience was extremely less then flattering. I was in your Hyattsville store tonight and two things rang in incorrectly; first was sandwich bags which were suppose to be buy one get one free they did not ring up that way. I was able to catch that almost right away but was still annoying being thag guy holding up the line at the grocery store. As I was walking to my car, I noticed I was double charged for my Thomas English Muffins which the sign said (and I can send you a picture of the sign) but one get one free. I then went back inside the store waiting at the customer service and a young lady assisted me with the problem. She advised that the sign was incorrect and it was buy one get two free and stated that you should know that, with extreme attitude. I advised her I did not come back inside to wait in line for an attitude. I asked her kindly to please fix the error. She huffed puffed and started getting in an argument as I had to remind her about the store policy which is placed at every register. She continued to huff and puff and advised me she "doesn't care". She opened up the cash drawer, and practically slammed my return money in my hand. She then stormed away, I asked the young lady what her name was and she advised me it was on the reciept. I asked her for the reciept and she ignored me and put her hand up as if to silence me. I asked her again for the reciept and she still ignored me. I had to then reach over the counter to the printer and retrieve my own reciept. The name on the reciept was LaShawna. I am wondering is this store policy to tell a customer there name is on the reciept and not tell the customer? Do you condone this behavior and rudeness to your customers? If so I'll just take my business elsewhere. I was extremely embarased and felt bewilder the hole time. I hope something is done so others don't have the same experience. One of the oranges landed on the ground with a huge splat, and the guys laughed it off. Hoping none of my produce had been similarly Hail Mary'ed across the store, I went to the check out line. The cashier was talkative and friendly with the man in front of me. When it was my turn, she didn't even say hello. Wouldn't look me in the eye or respond to anything I said. I picked up my bags and she greeted the woman behind me. The man in front of me, and the woman behind me, were both the same race as the cashier. I am not. I then called back and mistakenly dialed the deli. Staff answered the phone and I asked to be transferred to the pharmacy and waited on hold another 5 minutes only for another deli worker to answer the phone. 8:30 on a Thursday night and only one register to serve a line of about 25 people. Wow. This wouldn't be a big deal, but it's the third time I've come here and had a ridiculously long wait. This time, I just abandoned my half full cart in disgust and walked to my car. Giant is about a quarter mile down the road. Not as new, but there are five registers open and self-serve lanes. I literally counted 13 different kinds of boneless chicken breast but I wanted boneless chicken thighs. Nada. Now I have to picture horribly disfigured half-chickens at some GMO farm where the breast-to-thigh ratio matches that of the person who orders for this Safeway. Maybe the boneless thighs are all at the Giant down the street. Krave comes in two flavors; they have only one. But if you want oat rings, you are gonna be in heaven. So so many options. So there is no improvement since my original review. Right now my ice cream is melting while I'm waiting in the express checkout line. Every time I come here I say I'm not coming back because of the wait. It seems like the management is very unprofessional. Employees criticizing each other in front of customers, etc. At first I was very excited about this store because it is near my house, but as time goes on, I am less so. I thought they were going to have lots of healthy choices, and there is a small section of healthy choices. I love the bulk food section, that is the plus. Also like the grass fed beef and buffalo. However, due to long wait times to check out I do not go there frequently now I find that there is a limited choice of products, and the location of products and signage is not always logical . The coffee area is not comfy, and although there is a register next to the prepared food/ food bar sections , if you want to eat there, you have to go through the cashier lines first. I often have to chase someone down to slice bread. I hope the management of this store improves. read more

This safeway is really nice, it was super clean but I have to agree with everyone else about the service. When I went, there was only 1 line open if you had over 15 groceries. I waited about 15 minutes to get to the line. Now I know that some people may think I'm impatient, but I'm just comparing the wait to other grocery stores which is a lot less than this one. I will say that this place has really good sushi. Some of the sushi was better quality than many restaurants that I've been to. They have a nice selection of specialty products as far as gluten free and vegan, and there is also a parking garage with free 2 hour parking. I am a frequent shopper at this location. It's right next to my job, it's very convenient, and the staff is very friendly. So much so, that I am now recognized as the customer who always wears sunglasses. But, what I enjoy most, is the shopping experience here. It's not a lot of downtrodden workers, or lascivious shoppers. The staff is great, they are mostly all smiles. The shelves are stocked, clean, and faced up. So glad this new Safeway is finally open! My husband and I were running errands last Saturday and decided to check it out. The building is nice and modern looking. The parking on the ground floor was full, so we had to park on the upper level which has much more space. This would be inconvenient if it were pouring down rain though! Luckily, the entrance on is not that far away. The parking was free, but not sure how long that will last. We entered into the produce and flower section. The store is clean and bright and pretty well laid out with the exception of the narrow aisles. I would think the aisles would be wider for such a large store. There are a specialty sections like dry goods, spices, international, etc. The seafood counter was crowded as was the deli meat and cheese counter. My husband ordered turkey lunch meat, but forgot to order cheese. When we went back to order cheese, the wait was like 20 minutes! People were complaining about how slow the workers were, but I'm sure they were just learning the "ropes". They do need a ticket system so things can go more smoothly. There is a Starbucks and an Asian food bar. Not sure if they change the food bar to different themes or if it is always Asian. They also have a chicken wing bar (dangerous!). My husband and I ordered deli sandwiches to go, which were weren't too impressed with. You can also order pizza. Maybe we'll try that next time. I could've cried tears of joy the day I walked into this store and saw that they have FINALLY installed self-checkout registers. No more waiting in mile long lines! No more dealing with rude cashiers! Prayer really does work. Edit: 1/16/2017 This location has started charging for parking. The first two hours are free, with validation from your cashier. It was difficult exiting the garage because you are supposed to scan the ticket rather than insert it. The scanner is very low! If you have long arms this will be no problem.
