For as many times as I have been to this area of Hyattsville, I had no idea this grocery store was tucked away and hidden in plain sight. I honestly had no idea it was here and when I searched for nearby grocery stores while out the other day, I ended up here. The one thing that I do have to say about this location is that it is not easy to navigate. Unless you want to go up and down every single aisle. I came in here with a list of things, some of which would have been near each other, but for some reason were not near each other. It took me some time to grab the items I needed, even with trying to see the signs above each aisle and their general information board. Took me a bit longer than I would have liked. Of course I used the self checkout on my way out. Out in my vehicle I was back out on the road in no time. Would stop again, or maybe make it a quick stop on my commute home when using the Metro. read more

Area has changed dramatically. First time I have ever seen degentrification. Employees, some really nice, others rude as sht. Mixing good and bad apples, bad news. Witnessed stealing the last time by a customer. Actually, a really clever trick. Completely fooled the clerk in the self-serve line. This Giant fluctuates between being really good to failing miserably. I still go here but cautiously. read more

Being from the west coast, my friend recommended that I take a look at what groceries were readily available that would be different. First off, they carry Duke's mayonnaise that I have been dying to try for years. And then I was surprised how many different mayos they had. It was double the amount compared to the hot sauce section which just made me laugh. Complete opposite dynamics compared to the west. The store was well stocked for everything that we needed- a delicious vegan soup that my friend made and snacks for my travels south of here. My friend wishes there was a little bit larger ethnic food section, especially for the fresh produce and an expansion of Asian food in particular but that's because she's also from the west coast where we took for granted that descent kimchi could be found anywhere- house-made and cheap. Otherwise it still carried quite a bit to make a lot of this stuff from scratch. Also, what's up with the frozen French fry section? I've never seen so much selection grouped in one spot- for a potato. read more

Be careful if redeeming winning lottery tickets here. Their agent offered $50 less than the tickets I gave her and then claimed that she gave me what I was supposed to get. It turned out she failed to properly scan (and pay) a $50 winner. I got it settled in the end but it was up to me to find the discrepancy. read more

Dear Giant Corporate Offices, I have grown weary of seeing people walk out of your stores not paying. I have had unemployment and insurance that was more like extortion and I did not steal. Tonight I saw a man walk in the entrance, with a small teacup dog, and find a dog bed, and walk out the exit by the entrance way not even near customer service or registers - that staff had their eyes on the self checkouts. Please admit to your employees that they were right when they said people will shoplift once there's self-checkouts. You aren't the only company but you are closest to me and where I go. I saw a dad with his son in front of me in the self checkout NOT ring up flowers. His son looked at him with wide eyes and the dad moved out quick. In other words, the example is set on how to get free flowers. Take the self checkouts out. Bring cashiers back to cashiering not stealing prevention and make people go through lines. I'm sure your staff (that remain now) told you there would be shoplifting. Have you considered you might have made otherwise honest people into common thieves by putting the tools in front of them day after day? How many children have watched their parents steal in stores that previously haven't done so? Pay the price now or pay later. You turn a blind eye after this post and it's on you. read more

I came to this location today because I was in the area for a doctor's appointment. I rarely ever come to this area except for that very reason. As I was driving to my appointment, I noticed the store out of the corner of my eye. I remembered that I needed to pick-up a few basic items that I had forgotten to purchase over the weekend. Milk, wheat bread, and some sliced turkey ROM the deli were the main things on my list. As I was by the deli, I noticed that their hot bar is extremely limited, which basically included very small chicken wings, potatoes wedges, and chicken nuggets. As all of this food was fried, none of it grabbed my attention. However the salad bar is robust and expensive! I figured that I would prepare a healthy salad for dinner tonight, even though in the back of my mind I knew the dressing would kill the healthiness. While I was walking around the aisles I also grabbed a box of strawberry oatmeal fig bars, and a box of raisin bran cereal. The service is horrible. Self checkout machines are always broken. There are only 2-4 lanes open and some of the slowest (but generally nice) cashiers that I've ever seen. And the prices!! They really take advantage of this community and it's disrespectful. read more

This is my go to grocery store and I love that they always have deals throughout the store. The staff is very friendly and helpful and the store is organized well as everything is easy to find. I will say they could open a few more registers when it's busy and definitely get an idea of restock days because sometimes I'll go and a lot of the things I want have not been stocked as yet. read more

This is my favorite Giant! Close to everything, well stocked and friendly staff. I teach in the area so I know most of the people and it's just a great Giant. It's usually pretty busy because the area is surrounded by condos and apartments, schools and metro. I don't like that Giant corporation has now moved to so much self check out. But that's Giant overall. I try to avoid the busiest times and I make out just fine. Also I bank at PNC and I love that I can do my banking there also. Sad to learn that they are closing the bank because of a branch opening nearby. read more

Shopping here today and saw a group of 3 without masks even visible. Asked clerk stocking meat isle if they required it and he said yes, but when I pointed to the group he said the the requirement was only for staff. Management at customer service said quite the opposite and stormed the store looking for the potential disease spreading self centered monsters. I tend to only stop in this Giant if I'm parked at PG Plaza station and I happen to need something quick so it's convenient. I can't say I would go out of my way to come here. They generally have the few items I need and the store seems clean. My only "issue" is that they have several employees standing around to assist with the self check-out lines but only two cashiers available in the actual lines. This Giant is very convenient for those of us who leave the LA Fitness to replenish our healthy eats after a great workout. Staff I never really see them roaming around the store or helping any of the customers. When I do see them they are at the customer service desk. Not that I'm not willing to walk but why do I have to go to the front of the store to ask a product question to go to the back of the store to find it, NEGATIVE! I don't generally shop at Giant, but I was tired after work, and this particular one is just off East West Hwy on my way home (albeit the wrong side of the road). I was craving Oreos, and I knew Giant had them on sale (2 for $5.00). I ended up leaving with $50.00 worth of grocery... they had a lot of good sales going on. This store is huge. It is clean. The cashier was friendly. If I were a secret shopper I'd rate them highly. It's just that I am not really a fan of any Giant. Sorry. I almost gave them four stars just because on the back of my receipt were multiple coupons for Spice 6 Modern Indian restaurant in the Arts District. Free Naan! Woo Hoo! Score one for me! PEAPOD: Going to this grocery store is a nightmare. The cashiers are always preoccupied with something other than customer service, so I choose to use their grocery delivery service Peapod. I have used the service multiple times with mixed results. For the second time Peapod has left stacks of boxes outside my apartment door claiming that I was not home for the delivery. I'm always home! My guess is that someone let them in the building, they brought the boxes upstairs, knocked once and then left. For the second time I have no way to get the boxes back to Giant. The boxes are stacked up and the only way for me to get them out of my apartment is to throw them away and pay a fee or schedule another pick up. Scheduling another pick up means that I have to be there for the pickup (I may or may not hear them arrive) or leave the boxes in my hallway and risk being fined by my condo board. Having groceries delivered is wonderful, but Giant, you're doing it wrong. #firstworldproblems read more

This giant has a decent selection and good prices (significantly lower than the Safeway down the road... A neighbor told me that he's found some things that are cheaper at Safeway, but I compared about two dozen items and they were all cheaper at Giant, with most ~10% cheaper, and two more than 20% cheaper). My experience there a couple of nights ago suggests that they need to up their service game, though. I tried to use the self checkout, but the machine wasn't working. It malfunctioned a few times as I tried to enter my bonus card and scan my two bottles of lemonade (2 for $4, the only things I was getting), and for lack of service, I had to play with the machine to get it back on track through each error. Finally, while I was mid-payment with my card in the reader, it froze up and then put up a notice saying that an employee was coming to assist me. Ten minutes passed and no one had come to assist. I flagged one of the multiple employees who was loitering around doing nothing and was told that someone would be with me momentarily. Ten more minutes passed without assistance. By this time, there were people waiting for assistance at at least two of the other self-checkout lanes, and it wasn't clear that any were working properly. Reluctantly, since I wasn't entirely sure whether my card had been charged yet, I took my card out of the reader, picked up my lemonade bottles, and tried to go to one of the traditional checkout lanes. The cashier who was just finishing ringing up a very large purchase told me that she was closed. So, I moved to the next lane. I was told that that one was closed. When I got to the third and final lane that was staffed, I was told that that one was closed, too. After spending half an hour trying to buy lemonade, I decided to reject the sunk-cost fallacy's temptations and to cut my losses and leave empty handed. Trying to grocery shop as a resident of DC without a car is a really trying experience. This Giant has a large parking lot if you drive, but I only used it because it is close to the Metro. The produce here is disgusting,and there is no nice way of saying it. Almost all of the fruits and vegetables are wilting or going bad, and probably about half are starting to rot. It is not appetizing. You also must have a Giant card, as I usually save $20 on a $100 order. The rest of the store is large and typically clean. Expect to wait 20-30 minutes to checkout. read more

I've shopped at this Giant location on and off for over 10 years. This is by no means a high-end supermarket, but I give this store points for lower prices, well-stocked shelves, a decent store lay-out, and plenty of self-check registers if you want to go that route (which I usually do). And if you want a real live person to check you out, lines in general are usually not all that long (as opposed to other local stores in the area- see my other reviews/pics on that). Personnel at this store are so-so: not particularly rude, but not overly helpful either. I have noticed staff at the deli counter to be notably friendlier as of late- maybe they're aware of the increased competition in the nearby area and have stepped up their amiability, but whatever the reason, I'm aware of the change. Decent bakery, too. The weakest point in this store I believe is its cleanliness (or lack thereof): the produce area is consistently dirty, particularly the floors; the bathrooms have been dirty at times; some of the aisles could be cleaner; and the front end tends to be a bit messy. Even the outside sidewalk area has a lot to be desired. Given this is an older store (relative to the newer stores in the area), I understand the challenge of that, but sweeping and mopping (and de-waxing & re-waxing) these areas regularly is so critical in making things look nice, and generally being more sanitary. Not my favorite store, but they do enough good things and are easy on the budget that this is generally my "go-to" store when I don't need a specific higher-end item for a special occasion. I rarely shop here unless it's for convenience purposes. I'd rather drive into D.C. or Arlington for Harris Teeter, which is a better chain of stores in every conceivable way. The quality of selection of Giant isn't altogether terrible, but they could do better. The environment just seems like a grocery store from 1975 that is sorely in need of a makeover. Plus, they don't sell beer. The real problem I have with this place is that every single time I go there, the check-out lines are more crowded than a theme park at 11:00a.m. on a Saturday in July. Maybe some people don't mind waiting in plodding lines of consumers with overflowing shopping carts, but that's just not my bag. Even worse are the self-checkout lanes, where the machines are constantly fouling up. This further slows down the process. I can feel myself aging as I stand in barely contained agitation at the whole scene. The parking lot can really piss you off, too. The spaces are very tight and the drivers I've encountered seem to be diverting their attention to anything but driving their cars without causing a maddening clusterf***. Produce - The produce area isn't particularly large, which is a frustration by itself. However, when I'm in here, it's poorly stocked and whatever items they do have are in poor condition. Bakery - Their staff are extremely helpful. I've had to place significantly large orders, and they've been extremely accommodating during the process. Service Deli - Hit and miss. I placed a large order for pre-made dinners. Chris was extremely professional, polite and generally helpful. He answered all of my questions and provided information I hadn't asked for, went out of his way to give me a call about a potential problem, and just went above and beyond. On another contact, I spoke with Phyllis. She was inexplicably rude. I was only confirming the order and she was extremely short with me when I asked clarifying questions. I really hope I don't have to deal with her again. The rest of the store is acceptable, but not remarkable in any way. It's newer and is cleaner than some other local Giant stores. It's definitely NOT my preferred grocery store; I tend to only shop here when my job necessitates it or when I'm in the area and cannot wait to go to another store. read more

As usual Giant offers no nutrition and continues to serve tasteless produce and captain crunch for the kids. Thats no different here. Its the cleanliness and organization. Its as if they want to be shut down by the Safeway across the street and incoming Whole Foods. As long as there are ill-informed folks looking for low cost and low quality this Walmart of groceries will exist. Giant, try to add healthier options that are actually healthy. This is the worst Giant I've been to, and unfortunately, it's the closest one to me. I shop there at least once a week due to it's location and not it's cleanliness or selection. The best thing about the store is that every cashier I've met there is very friendly and helpful. Thank you! Too bad management has decided to replace most of them with the "Self-Check-Out" lines. There are usually flies buzzing around the slicing machines in the deli and around the salad bar and olive bar. I don't dare to eat anything from there - and I've traveled the world in some not-so-great conditions! The produce department has no idea how to store onions and they are kept too cold. They are practically spoiled before you get them out the door - and the fruit flies are all over them. Go to another Giant, Produce Manager and take some notes! The overall selection of items is small, but that is due to the area here. I would drive on to the next store if I weren't so pressed for time. read more

Like Terinee said, just a regular old Giant. Sometimes, the fruit and meat could be better. I go in there wanting some fresh fruit or meat, but end up going to Target instead. Also, on more than one occasion we've gotten stale taco shells from here, yes very random. Besides that, the prices are pretty decent, especially compared to the other grocery stores around and it's clean. I will say that on certain items, like meat, go to target instead if you can. But of course, Target doesn't have a large variety. read more

I have shopped at this Giant since it opened. The store is usually clean and well stocked. Produce section is very good. Rotisserie chickens are always well done! Deli is good; cold cuts are fresh. I used to come here every week with my mother. After she passed, several staff members at this Giant asked me how was I doing and offered condolences. One or two of the current staff still remember my coming to shop there with my mother. Also I must add that their rest room is usually very clean. read more

For about two or three years I shopped at this Giant pretty regularly. The produce section at the time was usually well stocked, and with the volume of business, usually fresh. The last three or four visits have been pretty disappointing. When you're greeted by spoiled fruits and vegetables, it sets the mood for a crappy experience. And I saw the stockers putting out bad produce, someone should have known better. I can only imagine what they're throwing out because people don't want to buy rotten produce. Maybe under more flattering light you could trick the shopper into thinking that's some sort of fancy heirloom lettuce, but under the dingy lighting is pretty clear that it's just rotten. The problem is that they still do a huge volume of business due to location, and they clearly have no motivation to do better for the community. The dry and canned goods are usually well stocked, but a visit to the meat department is disappointing. It just looks like everything is done in a rush, without any employee buy in. I strongly suspect that they understaff this store's meat and produce departments, because they definitely do that with the front end. Giant loves to shove customers through the self checkout so the people behind you get frustrated with other customers trying to navigate their system and poorly calibrated scanners (rather than blaming the wait on a shortage of cashiers). When I've got $100 or more in groceries, however, I wait the twenty to thirty minutes to get through the cashier line. Why does it take so long? Probably because some dope at the corporate office who never did their own grocery shopping in their life decided to cut costs and make the CEO salary bigger by getting rid of baggers. It takes forever for the person scanning to bag, especially with the awful layout they have at checkout. The counters are built for a two person system and they have one person on the job. This Giant is more than just a bad grocery store. It's a good example of what bad corporate management can do to a chain. They probably pay the workers below living wage and work them 27 hours a week so they don't have to cover benefits, and they understaff the stores at the expense of the customer. It shows in the attitudes of the workers and the atmosphere of the store. I'm driving the extra distance to Wegmans moving forward, and I hope Giant gets the hint in the coming years as people start trading the convenience of location for a business that puts some effort into keeping customers. Get some better standards for your fresh food. Hire some baggers. Clean your store and retain your employees. read more

The selections are wonderful. I just had an in encounter with a deli service person. I was speaking with my partner about the size of the frozen dinners compared to the prices. He shouted they are gormet meals. I stated even a gormet meal does not have to come in such small sizes and a price larger then the meal. I was told that I did not know gormet. I told him that i eat at very nice restaurants ruth Chris for example. He then told me that ruth Chris is a steak house and I didnt really know gormet. After I left the area he was laughing and talking about me like I was a nobody to another customer. I don't really shop this store often even though it's less then two mile from where I live and the reason is because of rude behavior like this. read more

Bad. If you go during any normal grocery shopping time, the lines will be really long and really slow. I feel bad for the employees because they are always pretty friendly, but the place is understaffed. On top of spending a lot of time waiting in line and ending up with melted ice cream, Giant is freakin' expensive! This Giant has a great advantage because it is the only grocery store in the immediate area - and is convenient for Hyattsville residents - but it is just a terrible store! Awful quality of products, especially meats and produce. Not a very wide range a product lines, so you're stuck with the run of the mill items. They've gotten a few specialty products in, but this still doesn't out weigh the negatives - it's dirty. They have so few real cashiers and zero baggers that you're stuck waiting in line for a 1/2 or you're forced to go through the inane self checkout which is horrible unless you have only a few items. The produce department is gross (it used to be decent). The seafood department smells like rotten fish. They don't have a real meat counter and the selection of cuts is hit or miss. They over price the better quality brands so that you'd think you were shopping at Whole Foods but with none of the perks of shopping at WF. I hate this place and avoid it at all cost. read more
