HERCULES SAFEWAY BAKERY DEPARTMENT. HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE FROM THE CAKE DECORATOR. What happened? I called the bakery before I arrived the grocery store. "Will a cake decorator be there today?" Their response "yes until 11am" Arrived at 1015am (before 11a). Saw the cake decorator. As she was helping another customer, she said "I'm leaving soon. I can't help you. You should call next time" little did she know, I DID call before I arrived. We asked politely "can you please help us and take our order." Rolled her eyes and took our order with annoyance. During this order, she made smirk comments "that's a weird way to spell a name"-- (it's a very simple name, only 3 letters). Then I pointed out a design of a cake in their binder and told her we don't need the toys. Im just interested in the border design and colors. She said "we can't make it". This order was for a first birthday, so I asked if they bake a free smash cake. They said "No" I showed the google results the Safeway and Lucky has this offer. They proceeded with "No, sorry" which is fine. I continued with my order and selected a design they can make. Fast forward 5 days later. I learned that Safeway El Cerrito honors the free smash cake with your child's 1st birthday sheet cake. So I went to cancel my order at hercules and receive my refund. Refund went smoothly in the customer service department. No questions. No issues. Walked over to the bakery dept to let them know I cancelled my cake order. No one in the bakery to be found. Someone from deli dept came over to help. SURPRISE: they CANT FIND my order receipt. THANK GOODNESS I CANCELLED. I WOULD HAVE BEEN CAKELESS FOR MY DAUGHTER'S 1ST BIRTHDAY. SAVE YOURSELF TIME AND ENERGY. GO TO ANOTHER BAKERY TO PREORDER YOUR CAKES/CUPCAKES. OTHERWISE, YOU MIGHT RISK NOT HAVING A CAKE MADE FOR YOUR SPECIAL EVENT. Gas station, Gas stations, ??? What is wrong? Dirty always something wrong, Pharmacy if you call for your medication statues, don't even think about it. They put you for a at least 15 minutes pretty rude. The bakery department don't buy it from here. They are old. They never replaced to a new one. read more

I am a person who prefers drive up or delivery for my items including groceries. Since the charging station by Safeway has opened, I have begun venturing inside Safeway to pickup a few things. The Safeway app made it possible to have a painless experience free of mindless wondering to locate needed items. In the app select 'store mode' and from there type in what it is you are looking for. For me, it was ground coffee ...Aisle 8, with two coupons to clip for Starbucks ($8.99 and $3 off). I got a 12oz bag of Starbucks coffee for $5.99! Would not have if it was not tor the app. After picking up a few other items I was off to pay. Easiest experience ever! The store was clean. A lot of restocking happening around 8a hour so an obstacle of lifts and loads created a slight maze to shop. At self checkout the attendee was friendly and wished me a good day. I still prefer delivery from this location, but the app provides the confidence to shop in store without needing to venture meaningless aisles. read more

I happened to swing by & always check out the produce section ( my fave go-to, especially since I've adopted a whole food plantbased diet !! On this day, I couldn't help but appreciate how attractive, fresh, organized & beautiful the section looked ! Alicia was the name of the produce associate & she was so helpful & friendly w/customers- she went out of her way to stop & bring out some new corn & customers nearly emptied her cart, even tho it's not on sale ! Honestly the section looked so inviting but I didn't want to mess up her display ! Yet I was tempted to buy a lot bc it looked so fresh & enticing !! What is going on with this beautiful building? The store is well stocked, seems to be perfect for Hercules. The service? Terrible. Yesterday I went to the meat counter at 7p to buy some meats. Of course, no one was there and then I noticed a handwritten sign informing me that they would return at 7:30. So I had to move on, adapt or wait 30minutes. Just dumb. This review is pertaining to the bakery department. We ordered a birthday cake for my daughter for Sunday, February 22. When my daughter's husband went to go pick it up, they said that the cake was never baked. Thankfully, the clerk by the name of Mercedes offered a discount, but that still doesn't make it right because when I called to ask what happened she said that he just never baked the cake. BAKERY This is my first and last time ordering anything from the bakery. The girl who took my order the first time had no idea what she was doing and didn't know how to take a cake order so I'm not sure why they had her working there in the first place. I got a phone call from the bakery the day I was suppose to pick up the cake because they also had no idea what the first girl put on the order. I had to show up in person to explain what I wanted again. I paid $75 for this cake and $25 for cupcakes which I forgot to take a picture of but they messed up that order as well. I asked for 24 cupcakes half vanilla and half chocolate with different colored frosting for Halloween. I was given all vanilla and all white frosting with Halloween rings thrown on top. As you can see in the photos the cake looks terrible. The decorations are literally falling off the cake and looks like they just rushed to put them on. The borders aren't even the right color, I asked for purple. Its all written on the receipt i have so I'm not sure how they can mess up that bad. They have very nice cakes in the display so theres no reason this should've been given to me so sloppy. read more

Laja at the deli counter was amazing. She made my large sandwich with meticulou care. I asked for a ton of toppings but she made sure they all stayed on the sandwich in the end and was very conscious of cutting it evenly in half because I was sharing it. A breath of fresh air as compared to the Pinole Safeway, and with a gas station, too! Actually, the gas station is both a blessing and a curse, but I'll review that in a separate review. This is a new store, so it is clean, modern, and large. If you go during off-peak hours (in others words, not lunch time or rush hour), the staff and customers are super friendly. During peak hours, the service isn't bad, just isn't as personalized. My biggest beef is that the parking lot design is a nightmare: tight and cramped to begin with, and the gas station and Peets don't help that. It also contributes to more traffic in front of my workplace as I'm less than a mile away. But it is convenient, too. So, the traffic and parking issues notwithstanding, this is the best Safeway in West County. read more

Plastic Bag Challenge! I'm so glad to have a brand new Safeway near my house. As many previous reviews already mentioned, the store looks clean, vibrant and modern. I shop in this new Safeway a lot! However, I have a few things in mind that need improvement. But for this review, I'll focus on one thing only. Why is the produce plastic bag dispenser is about NBA regulation basket 10-feet high? It's unsafe and inconvenient to reach! I always dreaded of getting a bag whenever I have to get some produce at Safeway. I admit, I'm not a giant, but at 5'6", I almost have to get a running start to grab the end of the plastic bag to rip one off. So, I'm exaggerating, and it's not safe to run in the store. But, it's way too high! It's like Steph Curry trying to dunk a basketball! Imagine other elder ladies or men who are way shorter than me trying to get a bag. You literally have to catapult them to reach the bag dispenser! So, c'mon Safeway, lower the dispenser. I know it's not 10-feet high but it sure looks like it. Lower it down for safety and convenience for vertically challenge people such as myself! Otherwise, I may have to bring my own Steph stool next time! Lol! read more

I appreciate having a brand new Safeway near my place, they seem to follow me everywhere I live. The supermarket is clean, vibrant, safe, and usually has what I need when I make a trip there. Each row is organized and labeled for efficient shopping, there are some deals for members, and the employees are helpful in finding items. I also appreciate the self check out system, although there were some kinks to work out in the beginning. I really like this location in particular because it generally doesn't get as crowded, even on expected busy days like before holidays/events. When I lived in Oakland, the Safeway was jam packed during those times and the lines would snake throughout the store! Parking is decent- the lot is a bit small so it can be a bit difficult to maneuver when there are lots of cars. I'm always able to find a spot though. Lastly, they have a great selection of vegan items, healthier alternatives (lentil pasta), and some culturally diverse food selection. Only dock is overall the groceries are generally more $$$, but at least I can get some gas savings at their pump! read more

I don't know if it's this store only or Safeway in general, but when using Instacart items are generally $0.50 to $2.00 higher than the instore prices. Instacart says they do not set the prices on items, the stores do. Being a Safeway member does not make a difference. Given Safeway's not so stellar history, i.e., lawsuits for changing prices before a BOGO sale, I would think they would want to retain and grow a customer base,not penalize those using Instacart. I, and I'm sure many others, rarely shop at Safeway anymore because of this. read more

Hubbers and I are avid Lucky shoppers. Then we learned Safeway was coming soon and we both got excited since it is slightly closer and we've had a pretty good experience with other Safeway stores. The time came when the need to buy a few items for the 4th of July weekend came up. We grabbed a couple of bottles of wine and stopped by the meat section. Fidel was there to assist us. For whatever reason, the three of us found ourselves engaged in a conversation about the different kind of meat cuts. He also educated us about what to look out for and hat price points to be aware of. We met Joe at checkout, and like Fidel, he, too, was engaging. Are all the staff in here this friendly? The store was kept clean. I did not see a hint of clutter. Granted, they're new, so maintaining it remains to be seen. Hubs and I were excited when this new Safeway opened ! We are avid Luckys shoppers but this Safeway has many great new additions compared the the old one ! First of all all the aisles are named after a street in Hercules which is really really cool. Also they have a poke bar! They also have a Starbucks and a cafe with outside seating and umbrellas . They have a decent flower section plus a big bakery . Very clean everything is always in stock whenever I come here. Beautiful store and the fruit and produce is always good. And best thing is no lines! that to me seals the deal because we all know the Safeway lines can be tooo much ! Parking can be tricky seems like they don't really have enough as they have a Peet's and a Chase Bank and last not least an extra star for the Safeway Gas! It's the real hookup lol! read more

Simultaneously, this Safeway location had a variety of items and a small selection of items. I'm an avid Lucky shopper, but from time to time I would go to Safeway for seafood, charcuterie, and dessert selections. Our most recent trip to the store was to grab food New Year's Eve dinner, which we did in the beginning of the week. Ever since this store opened, I have never been able to get a fresh bag of grapes. Usually they're sold out or do not look fresh, but this time every single bag looked on the verge of spoiling and the bag itself was extremely sticky. What I do enjoy about Safeway are their prepared food items. The chow mein and sesame taro balls really aren't that bad, and there's always a pleasant smell by the hot food section. I was obsessed with their poke bowls, which around around $10, and although I have yet to try them, their prepackaged Indian food, sandwiches, and Italian food look appetizing. When it came to finding other necessities like medicine, their selection was very small. There were no day-time flu liquid or pills at all. Parking is a struggle and the main reason why I avoid this Safeway, as the roads are too narrow. I did have a pleasant experience with the cashier, who said she was new, but super friendly and helpful when our items wouldn't scan correctly. read more

Very pleasant Safeway to shop at! The cleanliness of this location is amazing and it is almost always spotless. Everything is always organized and stocked. And, I've never had a difficult time checking out as they are very efficient and on track with reducing lines. The staff here also are very friendly and go above and beyond. I received great service with Nitisha at check-out and Carlos at the Butcher counter specifically. While their parking lot is sometimes a mess because of how busy this location is, it is never too much of a hassle to not shop at. I haven't tried the food they serve yet, but looking forward to checking it out soon! read more

I don't like going to ANY Safeway! This one is no exception. At this Safeway and all the Safeways, they have HORRIBLE customer service and all seem like they need a deep clean. Also any grocery store that has security at the front is a red flag. Their produce always looks sad and old. Don't let the "newness" of this Safeway fool you, it's horrible just like all the other Safeways. Their sandwich counter has abhorrent service, it's hard to find an employee working. I have seen an employee put their personal food in the microwave that heats up the customer's food. The Asian station, that food is disgusting and the service is also poor. And another thing there is hardly ever anyone at the customer service desk! I only go here if I absolutely have to and that's rare. read more

If you order a product that is more expensive (due to its volume/size) and Safeway substitutes a cheaper product (smaller), you will NOT get a refund for the difference. (2.) Safeway advertises "Fresh Pass" delivery service and charges for membership on its website, but Safeway does not have the manpower employed to deliver groceries to your door (as promised by Fresh Pass). Only commercial delivery services are available (Door Dash, GrubHub, InstaCart, etc. which are much more expensive. (3.) If your online Safeway account username is your email and your "member discount" is your cell phone, you will NOT get your member discount on items ordered for pick-up if you log into your online account using your email (to place your order) instead of your cell phone. read more

It's ok. End of review. lol, just kidding. Let's get into the details. Nice new store I guess. Has bathrooms in the front of the store. Has tables out front and one or two tables inside for eating, albeit next to the restrooms. They have sushi and a poke bowl, they are ok for the price. They have a bakery and a Starbucks inside. I have seen a lot of shoplifting here and reported it to multiple staff members and they said there was nothing they could do. So that kind of gives the location a sort of lawless vibe on my eyes. In general prices are kind of high. I hate the Safeway cellphone app, thousands of coupons on there that need to be clipped to use making it a waste of time. Last two times I tried to use it the cashier was unable to scan my membership with the handheld scanner so I gave up on the app. The store is always awning coupons in the mail. Just stop wasting my time, I hate coupons, just give me a fair price. Most of the time I would just rather go to Trader Joe's where they don't do coupons. Rice bowl is good and hot next to the sandwich area. They have breakfast sandwiches also. Like I said.... It's ok. 4 stars. *shrug* read more

I have never been more dumbfounded in my life of a grocery store until I stepped foot into this store. I was walking down the soda aisle and I saw a Safeway employee named Chris making racist slurs about the customers and acting very inappropriate towards another employee who looked very disturbed!! He would make comments like "don't help that customer they are gonna get deported either way." He also said that all black people are the same referring to as they all steal he wanted the employee to keep an eye on the customer to ensure they didn't steal anything! This is the worst thing anyone could do especially when their job surrounds customer service and shouldn't make assumptions about people this way! I will definitely not be returning to this store again and I suggest if you consider coming to this store you go in there with caution!! read more

This Safeway has wide aisles which is a big improvement over their other nearby store. I can't really say if the layout makes sense, I never did our grocery shopping before. The only real problem with this location is the small parking lot with narrow spots. There is no street parking for blocks. They have nice deli selections and the soups are always excellent. I also buy wine here; it seems strange to me that I cannot take wine to the regular checkout. Before I knew this I was on my way to an empty checkout line when the security guard blocked me and sent me back. I was embarrassed. read more
