Ok the major reason for this review being 4 stars is that it is open late. I appreciate that. I like to shop at the end of the day when the beach is dark. In the HMB area things tend to close early, If you need essentials this is a good place to grab them. The usual groceries are here as are the usual Safeway sales so you can find at other Safeway stores. I didn't use the deli, bakery or floral but the shelves had what I needed. It is an older store but it seemed fine. My check out person was ok. The parking lot is large and services several other businesses like Burger King, a bank, and Taste Cafe. It is located where the 92 and Hwy 1 meet in the Strawflower Village shopping plaza get the beach provisions! read more

The worst Safeway, I am giving it 2 as some of the staff are nice but they are always out of everything, never had things that Pacifica Safeway has on the shelf and when things are on sale they never have them. And good luck getting someone to show you where something is, not. I used to think that the store was maybe a 3+ but I live closer to Half Moon Bay Safeway but I nearly always go to Pacifica where that lcoation is 100X better. They are the only game in town often unless you want to pay the higher prices across the street at New Leaf. Overall pretty poor, I didn't give 1 star but as pointed out there are homeless around so lock up your car and for god sake don't give money to anyone as I have tried to give groceries and they pretty much told me to go get lost (or words I cannot use on Yelp). read more

The staff is always friendly but prices ring up incorrectly on a regular basis. Today I was charged $18. for 2 heads of garlic (supposed to be 69 cents each) and cookies on sale for $3.99 rang up at $6.99. This happens regularly, forcing me to go to the managers desk for a refund. They need to update their computer system. read more

I really don't understand these poor reviews. I've had impeccable service at Safeway. I often miss the sales...and the butchery is sold out. But, if I call, they are extraordinary. I'm expecting guests. Under a pinch, but wanted their eye of the round. A lovely butcher, said..."what do you need? I'm cutting them now!". I have beautiful steaks for my guests!! On Christmas Eve I was visiting this lovely store of hmb and Carmen is the grinch of hmb Safeway!! I had 19 items on a 15 item lane (4of which were gift cards) and she refused to help me. She made me take all my belongings off of the check stand and made Me move to another check stand . Carmen does not represent hmb. Her presence is uncharming. Happy retirement!! read more

Had a weird encounter at Safeway in HMB earlier today. At self checkout, the employee that hovers came over and asked if I didn't want something I put back into the basket. When I told her that I'd already scanned it and I just placed it back in the basket to carry it out to my car and save a bag. Without missing a beat, she very aggressively said, "Oh, you can't do that." And basically said that you aren't allowed to use their baskets to carry something out to your car anymore. Ok...I get it. If they are having a problem with people stealing their baskets, I'd understand that they might change their policy. But, it's the way she said it that has me shaking my head. Lately, Safeway has just gotten strange. Between their bate & switch offers on products (if you've ever tried using their digital coupons, you'd understand), to strange check-out practices, they just aren't all that great of a shopping experience. The meat department adds extra weight to the meat packages and charges meat prices for it. This happens every time I buy meat there. I went in to purchase ground beef, needing four pounds of it. Upon weighing it was was 3.5 pounds. Come to find that the packing added a lot of weight. There were three trays included which added almost five ounces to the package price! Not okay. read more

While you're shopping, be aware that the restroom door doesn't lock properly. I used to work at this location, and l've seen cases Where someone was inside, and another person accidentally walked in because the lock didn't work. This actually happened to me - I made sure to lock the door, but someone still opened it while I was inside. It was really scary and embarrassing. So please, beware! read more

Store is well stocked with the usual items. Lots of free parking. Good deli selection. The day we stopped customer service was good... 5:30 p.m. Saturday, January 24, 2026. Hard to understand the lack of not just care, but any small sense of urgency to help me tonight. I wanted help at meat counter. No employee at meat counter. Looked in the bakery, also no-one there. Went to the deli and told an employee I was trying to find help at the meat counter. Employee didn't speak English very well but I believe she was telling me something about "only one employee." Not sure what she really meant but she didn't offer any assistance. Walked back to meat counter and on the way passed an employee who was stocking shelves and told him I was trying to get help at the meat counter. He was very nice and said he would ask for help to get someone to come. Waited 15 minutes at meat counter and then went up to front of store where a manager was sitting at a closed check out lane. I told her I had been waiting a while for help at the meat section. She said she was sorry and that she would call for help. Went back and waited a while longer. Decided to purchase a pre-packaged tri-tip rather than purchase their fresh marinated tri-tip offered at meat counter. On my way to check stand passed the manager who hadn't moved since I last talked to her and said in passing that I never did get help. She said "sorry I called for help." Didn't get up, didn't ask if I still wanted help. That was the end. The fresh marinated was $17.99/#. The prepackaged I bought was on sale for $8.99. So store lost out on $. The other thing to note is that the store was not busy at all. Definitely no excuse for the extremely poor customer service. read more

Online orders beware. !!! The customer service is mostly online. When I did get a real person she suggested I type my online needs in the instructions to the shopper or delivery ; BUT THAT IS UNTRUE. SHE LIED TO ME. !!! I was trying to buy a product online that I have bought online many times before ; and when I was in the store six days ago they were out of stock and said that they would get it in by Tuesday. I explained I live 3 hours from Half Moon Bay and I order for a family member that lives in HMB on Hospice. Well when I went online Tuesday, I could not purchase it because it was out of stock then when I checked again on Wednesday, it says still out of stock I called the bakery department where the item is located And they said they do have it in stock. The bakery said they would set them aside with my name on it for online order and call customer service. The girl in HMB customer service knew nothing. I got the impression customer service could but go the way to help you !! I explained to her the situation that my family member is on HOSPICE . I live three hours away otherwise I'd go in the store and get it for him ;he loves that stuff "no substitutes"he munches on it and I'm just trying to send it to his Home along with other items. No one could tell me how to get the online changed to it was in stock. It was a joke. It says out of stock online but it's in the store. ???! The Safeway has switched in the deli department from paper bag to plastic bags... No Choice whatsoever. I thought these big companies were supposed to be cutting back on plastic not adding plastic to landfills & oceans! The plastic bags make fried foods so soggy. I don't know who's bright idea This was, but I will stop shopping at Safeway and go to Grocery Outlet or New Leaf. Grocery outlet is Half the price of Safeway. Safeway always charges me full price when items are on sale. I always end up having to go back through the line to get my money reimbursed. This is my go to safeway when im in halfmoon bay to get a snack or something. Though I always come here to get a deli sandwich Ive never had any issues with ordering whatsoever. It wasnt until today when the lady behind the glass was super uptight and rude, a hispanic lady, a bit short not to large. I was confused on the build of my sandwich so i asked politely as i was mistaken over something small, i apologized when wrong but even then her demeanor throughout and since the beginning was super off. Purchased a cream cheese dip on 12/31/24. When I opened it to serve for New Year's Eve it was chunky, sour, and smelled wrenchingly awful. Discovered that the sell by date was Feb of 2023! Unreal! Sitting in my fridge right now is a package of lunch meat I purchased a week ago that has the date 01/22/23 for the expiration. I'm so mad! It was almost $7 and it's old AF! Yeah I'm that mad! Obviously Negative Stars The deli in Half Moon Bay is actually great compared to other Safeways I've been to. The ladies that work there are super nice and helpful. The chicken wings are cooked perfectly. They have over stuffed my cold macaroni salad and it busted all over the check out so that needs to be addressed. So for them 4 stars. Pacifica Linda Mar location is fine except their deli. So I'd give them 3.5 stars. Tiger and the crew at the check stands are all great employees and friendly. Even the store manager is a really great guy. The deli however, I've seen mostly overcooked, dry wings. They rarely if ever have wings and breasts in the fried chicken. I've been told they only make dark meat fried chicken. I don't eat dark meat. The people are nice though but not always as helpful and have closed early which can be annoying. 2.5 stars for Linda Mar Deli. Safeway should be affordable. It's where the general population shops. Obviously they have some high priced items like grass fed beef which is a personal choice. But the simple fact that they way outnumber Targets in the area goes to show that they are purposefully price gouging. I knew this would happen when Albertsons bought them but since the pandemic they have gone crazy with the prices. $5 for a can of chili. I just can't! I'm not stupid. I know what items are worth. Maybe they should offer more choices. Even their Safeway brands are overpriced. I hope others chime in about these issues and hopefully changes can be made. read more

They have a large parking lot, which was nice. We came here in the evening and there was an employee with arms crossed at the entrance. Inside the store was spacious and they are following social distancing. When we left the store, my friend tried to say in a cheerful manner, "good night!" to the guy who's arms were still crossed and he mumbled his response back at us. It didn't upset us that he wasn't happy, but it would've been nice had they asked a different employee to stand outside or maybe given this one a chair to sit outside in case that would've made his shift easier. read more

I've lived in Half moon bay for 6 years and refuse to go to this Safeway even though it's local, I drive over to the one in Pacifica even though it costs me extra gas and the traffic can be very frustrating at times. If you look at all the other reviews, none of them are good and You can believe 100% that they are all very accurate. The employees are so rude and incompetent. Last time I was in there I had 11 items in my cart (yes I counted them) I went to the 13 items or less lane, when the chunky Hispanic girl finished with the customer in front of me she look at my things as I was putting them on the conveyer, got very pissy and said..umm for the future, this register it 13 items or less, I said yes, I am aware and I have 11 but i will gladly go to a different register here someone will actually work for their paycheck. I started putting my things back in my cart and she said, oh okay if you have 11 items I'll check you out, I just took my cart to another register and as I was voicing my complaint chunky Hispanic girl said..don't be pointing your finger at me, I said I would check you but you just left. The store is clean selection is good but at food costs where they are you don't need to be treated like garbage upon check out. I hate to give 1 star reviews, and I was tempted to with this Safeway because I think there are a few issues with it that shouldn't go unnoticed. However, in all fairness, they have the convenience of being located right off the highway and are a pretty spacious store. I will give them that. For one thing, one of their single-person bathrooms does NOT lock. The bathroom on the right. The door will close, and when you push the lock button, it will pop back up again. A maintenance issue that can be easily fixed, but for some reason was left unaddressed. Secondly, these bathrooms were disgusting. No soap, sticky floors (yuck), and terrible smell. I agree with other reviewers when they say this Safeway is slightly worse than most other locations. There is room for huge improvement here. They really need to stay on top of maintenance and hygiene here. read more

This is the best Safeway I've ever been to my whole life! Comparing it to all the Safeway's in San Francisco lol. Every thing is well stocked. It's pretty organized and clean. From my experience, all the staff is friendly. The cashier's are fast and efficient. The deli is kind of slow but that depends if there's 2 people or 1 person working that time I come (around 4-5pm), but I can wait at least 15min just to buy their best fried chicken deal which is like about $10 bucks or so. They have spacious parking and are open 24 hours. I'm sure there are better grocery stores out there but this basic Safeway is good enough. Happy Groceries :) read more

Today October 28, 2020 in the morning. I went to this Safeway as I am just visiting this town. I went to get groceries and had my cart. THE FRONT END Personnel CARMEN, IS THE MOST ANNOYING DISRESPECTFUL PERSON. I was trying to get into the aisle where the line is but she didn't let me get into it and just told me off to GO AROUND THE WHOLE AISLE. There was no line at that hour. He let 2 white guys go in the line just because they don't have a cart. They looked at me and felt bad because they know I was already there. CARMEN MADE ME go around to the BACK (as in back) just to go around back to the line of 4 people in front. I said "what? That's fucked up, I am already there. I was supposed to be the 3rd person in line." I went to the back just to turn around and back to the line like a CLOWN and finally I was there. I looked at her and she just started saying "You know what? That's not cool you talking to me like that." Blah blah blah She kept talking about what I said. Like so what CARMEN???? I can say whatever I wanna say you shouldn't be offended so easily like this was your house or kids talking to you. I interrupted her to say "Please don't talk to me. I don't wished to be talked to right now." This personnel just kept on and on and on and on... kept talking me. I said "Mam please don't talk to me." Then the worst thing came. She even THREATENED TO PUT ME OUT OF THE STORE. (SAFEWAY DOES NOT TREAT CUSTOMERS LIKE THIS). Just because I kept asking to not be spoken to, she does not have the right to put me out of the store just because I was speaking about how fucked up "her" policy is! Exactly, it was just her rule! This might be the worst supermarket I've ever been to. Many items not stocked for weeks in a row. Sale items not in stock regularly. Filthy displays. Inept employees. Today was special. Multiple boxes of chicken left getting warm in the meat dept. for the entire time I was in the store, completely unattended. Finally the guy shows up, who I assume was on a break, and started putting the warm chicken on the shelf. Great. Beer and wine cooler was also very warm. 2.5 gallon water is always out of stock. We don't have drinkable tap water and have to drive 20 miles just to get to this store. Makes for a very frustrating experience on top of all the other items not stocked regularly. read more

First time & last time that I enter this store. This place is a s#!+ hole, Filthy!!! Old! If I could give it "0" Stars - I would! I go to the bathroom and there is NO SOAP. not even an empty soap cartridge that goes into the dispenser. Freakin nothing to wash & CLEAN your hands with. Now - after I go to the bathroom and go to wash my hands and see that there is no soap - I freak. Cause this means that the Employees DON'T WASH THEIR HANDS Either. This is n old store and the bathrooms are actually in the back of the store through the infamous double doors. Still, when I confront a young employee he basically shrugs it off like no biggie??? says, "Oh here is some soap for you - I'll even put in for you"??? I really hope you all know where I'm going with this. If there is no soap in the restrooms, then when the customers & more importantly the EMPLOYEES go to the bathroom and then come back to work or shop SPREADING their germs ALL OVER THE STORE!!! Half Moon Safeway leaves a lot to be desired. the bathrooms not clean, I like 3 checkers that are very nice the oriental man Chinese maybe, I like, pleasant and friendly. also some products that I like GONE! stopped. the produce is way overpriced, Lucky is a lot cheaper. The Safeway is nice. I especially like their bakery section. They are still taking Covid precautions pretty strictly. I appreciate the ease of the self check out when only picking up a couple of items. The parking lot however can be pretty annoying both coming and going. I got their cheesecake dessert with glazed strawberries, I wouldn't recommend it. The strawberries were tasteless, lumps of cardboard in a strawberry glaze, as if that's supposed to improve the taste somehow. The actual cheesecake? I have been meaning to review this place for a while, as this Safeway consistently sucks like no Safeway I have ever seen. Today was the last straw, so I had to get on Yelp and share. One strange problem with this store is that they often run out of key items (eggs, bananas, and potatoes are common victims). I would expect this in a remote location, like the Andes, but not here, half an hour south of San Francisco. Now, I must say most of the employees at HMB Safeway are very nice and are doing a good job. But there are never ENOUGH of them. Almost every time I come here, I hear pleas on the intercom for additional checkers. The check out lines are ridiculously long. There are almost never any baggers, so you either have to do the work yourself, or feel like a jerk waiting for the checker to do it, while the line behind you grows. Today I was helping the checker pack up my purchases, and I noticed two Safeway employees right at the cash registers, chatting about what they did during the Superbowl. At least one was a manager of some sort. Both were wearing those "fancier" Safeway uniforms. In most businesses, when things are busy, a good manager rolls up his or her sleeves, and gets in to help. Anyway, neither of these two stepped in to expedite the lines of shoppers. I guess they figure either the grunts will do it, or the customers will. Nice, huh? read more

This store I very cruel to elderly and disabled. They will not respond to requests for assistance. They demean and belittle anyone needing assistance. They should be investigated! I urge you to check this out for yourself. Yesterday they were incredibly cruel to an elderly disabled relative screaming at her that she was banned from their store. They treated her like a thief because their narrowly stacked isle did not allow her space to maneuver the riding cart. A potato chip display fell on the floor. This was after she could see this was teetering and requested help. But as usual the store employees ignored her request for assistance. They screamed at her-told her she was not allowed to "say a word" while they chastised her like a child and then told her very loudly in front of everyone in the store that she was banned from the store. This is a lady in her late 70s that can barely walk. She could not race anything if she tried. She just needed help and was humiliated and demeaned. I sincerely hope every disabled person within 200 miles shows up her to protest. read more
