Why do they always raise the price the last week of the month when you just got your rewards discount which basically takes away the discount I just earned? Also, the pump doesn't give you the cash/debit card you are suppose to get. So you really don't get the true price shown. read more

The DELI in the Discovery Bay Safeway is FIRST CLASS! DEFINITELY FIVE STARS!! The deli staff led by Maria responds very effectively to the individual and sometimes idiosyncratic requests of customers: explaining the different varieties of meats, for instance, to be sure that customers gets the type they will like best. The deli food specials (usually 15-20) are freshly prepared each day. The best thing about the deli is its STAFF; they are helpful to each and every customer, serving them indeed with a smile and with suggestions that suit their needs. I need to be honest! I generally don't spend my time writing any reviews: I rather spend the time with my family!.. But this is beyond anything I have seen in my Adult Executive Management experience.. Shelves not restocked, rude employees, and a Meat and Seafood section that sells expired products.. If this happens Once.. OK. . everyone gets a pass. But LITERALLY.. in the last 9 months we have returned 5-6 either meat or fish because when when we opened them we were overcome with rotten smells.. Add to this their Butchers DO NOT trim the Hard Fat off their Meat.. Not the Fat that is favorable, but the HARD Fat that does not break down, only to increase the chargeable weight! Nothing like a greeting today from the Guy behind the counter today: Not kidding you!. He came up and said "What!".. Horrible management!!! read more

Didn't think it was possible, but once again, the Discovery Bay pharmacy has set a new low. The lack of care and customer service is ridiculous. I waited over 15 minutes for the pharmacist to input a customer's insurance while his assistant just stood next to him dazing off into space. No one acknowledged my presence and that it was taking longer than expect, after patiently waiting 15 minutes I politely asked if the other computer could be used to check me out, the assistant said no with a look of disgust. Get a clue, a simple smile and "I'm sorry please give us a minute, it's taking a little longer than expected" goes a long way!! I'm done Safeway. I'm done with your over inflated grocery prices and now your pharmacy. read more

I have a problem with the Safeway Pharmacy in Discovery Bay. The pharmacist at Safeway won't help at all if there is a problem with the prescription. He is very rude and never smiles. I had to get the manager involved because he wouldn't even call the doctor when there was a discrepancy on my medication. This guy refused to give me a partial and they are always running out of my medications. When Gerry was there, he would give me what they had in stock and order more. I never had to ask Gerry to do anything. He just did it for me automatically; like calling the doctor. It isn't the same since he left. read more

Got duped on filets. Wrong type of cut of meat. Paid $26 for 2 cuts of something that is not Filet Mignon.

My fifteen month old daughter and I are visiting my parents while my husband is deployed in Iraq untill Janurary. My husband and I qualify for WIC which has been very helpful in providing plenty of food and juice and fruits and vegtables for our daughter. Safeway is the closest grociery store to where my parents live in Discovery Bay and I just recieved my WIC checks for this month so I decided to go to safeway with my dughter to use them. To my surprise as I was walking around Safeway there were no WIC labels telling me which foods were WIC eligible...when I went to ask someone( I forget her name) but she was working on check out #3 line at around 3pm) she said she would get someone to help me. About ten minutes later she came down the juice isle where I was having trouble finding the correct wic juice and said in a very rude tone that anything over 100%juice is eligible and that they did not have any WIC labels on anything but the bread (whole grains). Overall the help and care I recieved was piss poor and my parents have been loyal safeway customers for over 25 years. I am very disgusted at how the lady who worked there treated me..in fact the bagger at checkout #3 was the nicest and cared the most as they kept having to run back and fourth because something I had grabbed was not the right item..maybe if you labeled your WIC items this would have never happened!!! I am already going through enough as it is and on top of writing this complaint I will be calling the manage immediatley after submitting this! read more

It is your typical average corporate grocery retail store. I don't recommend driving all the way out to Eastern Contra Costa County to shop here. It is an establishment for local residents only and if you are foreign; we will take notice. Ive had very good buis here, workers r helpful.. easy to find things, i havent had bad food ( inwhich i had from other stores in the past, mostly the cheaper stores) Im very pleased with Safeway overall. The cashiers are nice. Other than that, the store is lacking. The store manager does not return his business calls. The pharmacist handed out the wrong Rx. They ran out of Monopoly tix on Monday night ( May 8) and did not want to talk about it. Still on the following day, the food items had the Monopoly ticket blurb on them. No tix. The meat and seafood is very expensive and is average quality at best. They put all this display stuff in the crowded aisles and its difficult to move a cart. I got 2 heads of lettuce last week, both rotten inside. The fried chicken and other deli stuff ? expensive and average quality. Not interested in expensive and average quality. The gas station is convenient but crowded- be careful there. read more

This Safeway consistently has terrible service. Never once have I been helped by a competent employee. I live very close, so I seem to end up going there when I need one or two things and they never dissapoint me with the crappy service. I bought a loaf of Sourdough from the bakery and it had the finger of a rubber glove in the loaf of bread. What is worse is that I was the one who actually chewed on it. So gross. When I borught this to the store manager she gave me a $20 gift card and joked,"at least it was cooked." So not funny. I happily shop at Raleys where they never let me down. read more

The management is no existence and I'm not sure they care too much about the store. Since the new management, this store had gone from good to what happen? The best word to describe this store "Subpar". I would think this place (being the only Safeway and or grocery store in the area) to be a flagship store. Most of the items on the floor are expired or just about to. The produce is a nightmare, rotting fruit items, and the vegetable are usually rubbery and wilted. The meat department has been reduced to just a few meat/poultry selections from the butcher display case. The cashiers and baggers are exceptional but with the way, the store looks, I'm pretty sure the management isn't treating them well. The accountability from the management of this location is lacking. If the corporate office is reading this review YOU should go and visit this store and look for yourself. Make sure it's unannounced visit. I now shop at the Safeway located on Balford in Brentwood. The Balford Brentwood location is clean, organized, better selection all around and the management and staff are awesome. It's a shame. Hopefully, a new grocer will set up shop in Discovery Bay soon. read more

HORRIBLE MEAT Department. They often have meat out that has expired. In the past 3 months I have purchased meat that was not expired, but that was bad (at least 3 times). I just pulled apart some pork chops I purchased there today and where the meat overlapped, the meat was turning green tinged brown and smelled. I will not shop there anymore but will go into Brentwood for groceries. read more

Worst grocery store ever! Management is so bad. ALWAYS out-of-stock on best-selling items. No depth of selection. Items are continually disappearing from shelf sets simply because an order tag flips off. It is hard to believe that in this day and age Safeway is still relying on paper shelf tags to maintain shelf positioning and ordering. These tags are notorious for coming off of the shelf and when they do, all of a sudden the inventory is out-of-stock. This is no way to maintain inventory. But the bottom line is management doesn't care enough to train employees to care, So they go along month after month providing crappy customer service. If Safeway had any brains they would see that this store in particular has potential for great profit. Safeway is the only game in town. Instead, Safeway's way of thinking is, well, they HAVE to shop us so we don't need to try. This is a financially influential community of recreation, and weekenders looking to have fun and invite friends to visit, It could be sooo profitable to Safeway if they would just give the store the attention it deserves in regards to customer service, and inventory maintenance and carry higher-end, quality items that are conducive to the community it is supposed to serve. Instead, the weekend is when they have less customer service, fewer employees, and inventory is allowed to dwindle to nothing. The deli is the worst. No one EVER greets me when I come up to the counter. They make you feel like you're bothering them because they would rather be in back cleaning, or slicing or whatever it is they do in back. Whatever it is, it is definitely more important to the workers than helping customers at the counter. This should be the happiest counter in the store, but instead it is the saddest and the most frustrating.. And the bakery is the same. I definitely blame management (and that includes the Regional Manager Shane Ryan) for not training their store personnel on customer service, greeting customers, being friendly, and insisting on keeping a zero-tolerance for inventory out-of-stocks. This Safeway is definitely one where you go if you are desperate to find a convenience store. This place feeds off of that, and their staff definitely treats you accordingly. Absolutely horrible customer service within the gas station as well as the store. For example, one of the pumps was broken at the station and it spilled gas all over my motorcycle before I could do anything. I went in and tried to tell the guy there that it was broken and what happened and it took 2 seconds for him to say "k" and look away without a moments hesitation. Now I could've been more of a jerk about it, as I know the manager of the store as well as lead supervisors, but I was being polite. Inside the actual store you'll find that most of the checkers act absolutely miserable and don't even try to hide that they're only talking to you out of customer service obligation. If you come in later at night the service or greeting is nonexistent and they'd much rather stack a box that they just walked over to instead of helping a customer that needed help. Wouldn't be a problem if it weren't that self checkout is closed at night. Absolutely horrible store, terribly managed, workers are clearly miserable, and they know they can get away with it because the only reason you're coming back is because there is no other store within miles if you live in discovery bay read more

Have seen improvement in produce department lately, especially with the organization and placement of my favorite vegetables and fruit, have also seen an improvement in the morning with all of the facing of the isles. When I moved to Discovery Bay almost 2 years ago I was so excited! A grocery store right down the street! How cool is that? The first time (and only time) that I bought fish from the seafood dept I thought all was great. Fixed dinner, YUCK! The fish was horrible. I am constantly frustrated by making meals only to have a good portion of the meal be bad. From produce to meat I have been really disappointed! Then there is the check out lines. You would think that from the hours school gets out until after everyont has stopped in from work to get dinner items they could have enough checkers! Come on Safeway! I was told by an employee (who's name I will not give) that if they were to get the self check lanes they would cut back even further on employees. Do you guys not realize how much MORE business you would get if you had plenty of curtious employees? Every time I end up there in the late afternoon or early evening I stand in line and hear people grumble "If this wasn't the only close grocery store I would NEVER come here"! I feel the same way! If you truly want this store to succeed and be profitable work on the things that people complain about! Make it the place that everybody wants to come to.
