I usually shop elsewhere, but sometimes I need snacks that aren't available at my usual places. On my last visit, I was craving a bit of nostalgia so I was on the hunt for Taki Pix Fuego (everyone's been raving about them being the vegan version of Hot Cheetos). I checked the Safeway next to Petco Sunnyvale after my Bay Area Cats volunteer shift, but they didn't have them, so I stopped here on my way home. I thought they were out of stock too, but I ended up finding 3 bags hidden behind the Takis Pickle Punch chips. They didn't have the small hand carts. They only had the big push carts, and since I only needed 3-4 items, it seemed super inconvenient to have to push a large cart. I wandered around the store looking for a small cart and eventually found two at a checkout lane. Several people were walking around carrying their items in their arms because they couldn't find a small cart either. I typically use self-checkout as I find it more convenient. However, one time I came in the morning and the self-checkout was closed. The one staff member at the registers left to talk on her phone and was texting when she came back. She seemed a bit annoyed to be there. Other than that, service-wise everyone I've talked to when I stop by has been kind. I prefer Safeway Cupertino over Safeway Sunnyvale because it's cleaner and has a better layout. If they expanded their organic and vegan options, I'd probably come here more often since it's convenient location for me. read more

Safeway is a good supermarket chain. Every week there's new deals on the app and occasionally you can combine digital deals for amazingly good prices for things like chips and ice cream. I do appreciate that most Safeways, including this one, have a plastic bag recycling bin as those are very hard to find. Pretty big and well-maintained store here in Cupertino. Super disappointed in the bakery department, I ordered an frozen theme cake and I was so sad to see how it turned out. It was nothing like the picture I picked out that they had the colors were all off and there was cracks all in the cake. I feel if you're gonna have these pictures to choose from they should be really close to what you offer. I recently read a review mentioning that there are almost no cashiers on the job. This is largely due to the management taking advantage of their staff by yelling at them and forcing them to work overtime for very low wages. Additionally, customers often treat the cashiers poorly. It's important to remember that cashiers are human beings too, and they deserve the same respect and kindness as anyone else. Furthermore, coworkers in this environment often mistreat each other, with some taking advantage of the nicer individuals. It would greatly improve the workplace if unpleasant coworkers learned to treat their colleagues with kindness. We all need to do better. read more

All these negative reviews leads to one conclusion. You people are nuts. The shockingly over-priced horrible markets in this area are an insult. Safeway has normal prices lower than Whole Foods by 25% on the same Talenti ice cream. A sale at Whole Foods is literally less than $1. Often at Safeway I save $25! The rat infestation was at Whole Foods, remember? Zanotto's is for people with more money than brains. Draegers and Roberts in Woodside are 50% more expensive. Best mix of cost/selection/service is BY FAR Safeway. The specials are constant. Pretty poor on prepared foods but a grocery store is for shopping and cooking yourself. read more

I genuinely don't understand why this place is seemingly so understaffed. On most occasions all but one checkout lines are closed during peak times, leading to a single line that stretches down the aisles that goes unaddressed. If you're in a rush, I guarantee you'll save time by taking the 10 minute drive to the Safeway in Sunnyvale (which is nicer anyway). read more

I'm starting to have mixed feelings about the discounts here. Today I needed to run in to grab some ingredients for a meal. One of the things that I needed was cheddar cheese. I noticed the attached tag on the shelf, but when I tried to scan the barcode in the Safeway app the discount didn't appear. My other discounts were ok. The thing is, $2 / 8oz is a reasonable price for cheddar cheese, $4.49 / 8oz is really high. I interacted with three employees. The employee in the self checkout: * Did her best to help me to find the offer * Offered to void the transactions for the cheese, allowing me to complete the rest of the checkout and go to customer servcice * Was facing a line of other customers who needed help, and handled the pressure really gracefully The employee at customer service helped me to find my QR code and then went to the shelf. I noticed that he pulled a trash can over and threw away the shelf tag on his way back. He then announced that the shelf tag expired on 5/22 (today is 5/26). The thing is: I took a photo of the tag when I first had trouble (hoping to save everyone some time). It clearly shows 5/22 - 5/28. He gave me the discount on the product, but I didn't appreciate the confusion around the expiration date. A third employee came by to pick up an order. I offered to step aside to let her help other customers. She was really nice about it (I'm doing something else right now...) She also stayed for part of the dispute around the expiration dates. This all seems too complicated to me. Things are busy on the holiday weekend, and the inconsistencies in the discounts are pitting the employees against the customers. It is hard to believe the experience at the deli this morning. Ordered two of the special sandwiches on the board, $9.00 including a soda and chips. The person making our sandwiches seemed new, but was pleasant and put care into making our sandwiches. When we went to the nearby deli register to pay, it appeared the wrong label had been put on the sandwiches. We told Gilberto who was at the register that we ordered the special sandwich deal, and he asked us to show him what we ordered. Walked him over to the other side of the counter, pointed up and showed him the price and photo clearly on the price board which has not changed in months. Gilberto walked back to the register, then calling over another woman who works in deli, and they had a long conversation in Spanish we could not understand. They also asked the clerk who made our sandwiches questions, again in Spanish and so I could not understand it all. After that, and I am not kidding, they took our sandwiches over to the counter where they were made and proceeded to UNWRAP them and inspect them. At this point, we were shocked! All for 2 $9.00 sandwich specials, now 5 minutes into trying to pay for them. Sandwich was rewrapped, and we were told that since we added lettuce and tomatoes, it was not the special sandwich anymore and the pricing was different. No matter that the photo clearly shows tomato in the sandwich on the price board, and we added nothing extra at all. We finally were overcharged, somehow paying $20.73 not including tax for the two sandwiches, but at that point, we paid and left, never to return to this store again. Not the first bad experience I have had at this store, but will be the last. I can walk to this store from my house, but I will drive to another store rather than spend another dollar there. read more

This review is for their drive up service. DO NOT USE THEIR DRIVE UP!! Every time I use this service at this location it's a nightmare. They make me sit in the car for like twenty mins after I've arrived. I have to call and check on them. This time I ordered for 9 am pickup. I got an email that they're working on my order at 8:17. Then at 915 another email that sorry they're delayed. I called the 800 customer service on the email to check at 935 and they're like we'll send them a message. It should be ready by 10 for sure. I had my baby with me so I drove there and park in a spot and call that number and ask them and they say oh yeah it's ready we're bringing it out. I sit in the car for fifteen mins. No notifications on my phone. Finally she comes out and asks to see my code. I'm like you didn't send anything. She's like check your card and see if you got charged. I tell her did you mark it ready in your computer?! So she says she's gonna go inside and check her computer and I should check my card to see if I got charged. I sit another ten more mins. My kid was restless so I get him out of the car seat, go inside looking for her. I couldn't find her so I ask someone and they try to call her a couple times. I told them I don't care anymore, just charge my card that's in my hand so I can get out of here. Then she says let me check with my manager. She goes to her manager and she says it's fine and they can just give me my order since the app said they charged my card. We go back to my car and I finally get out of there at 10:25!! At 10:34 I get a text, your order is ready! By this time all my frozen stuff have been out of a freezer for thirty mins... And I don't even want one of the things that they substituted, so I have to go back in and return that. The Safeway on El Camino is so much better for drive up. They're always ready quick and the lady that usually brings out my stuff is so cheerful. One time she saw my kids in their car seats and she gave me a bottle of water for free for them... I have never had poor service than the service I got from Christina, manager of the deli. I asked employees to make me a fresh stick. They said as per Christina's orders they can't do that for me anymore, even though they've been doing it for three years. I do not bother them when they're busy and I don't bother them on five dollar Fridays. Nothing was being cooked at the time of my request. So I went ahead and ordered one that has been sitting under a heat lamp for at least an hour by the way it ended up tasting. It was disgusting. I usually shop in Saratoga, but I happened to be here and found this store to be amazing. It's very large with aisles wide enough to pass another shopper with ease. Displays are attractively appointed, and the store is sparkling clean. I had to ask for help and was rewarded by a friendly and accommodating clerk who led me to my desired product. I especially enjoyed the large selection organic products in all departments. The floral department is magnificent. *I do wish all grocery stores would move away from meat and vegetables pre-packaged in plastic. Staff are friendly and they have outdoor seating in case you buy something and you want to eat outside. Can't go wrong with that. We have been shopping at this Safeway for years. We are used to what we call "the Safeway Experience" where isles are cluttered with promo signs sticking out into the isle, the produce quality is mediocre, and the meats are not worth the price even before runaway inflation. However, today was an all time low. They are now locking up the batteries and you must summon an employee to open the case and be accompanied to the checkout. I appreciate that they have been ineffectual at fighting theft in their stores but their incompetence has now become my inconvenience. It is not worth it for their overpriced items such as batteries. I shall add these to the growing list of items we now purchase from Amazon with convenience and better pricing. read more

At some point we all have to visit our neighborhood grocery store for something on our shopping list. Too bad by the time you finish shopping you have 20 other items that weren't on the list but looked to good to pass up on. 1 Star - the location is great for ME!!! 2 Stars - it is clean and well kept. 3 Stars - convenient layout of the store 4 Stars - when this store opened they were forced to transfer the rejected staff from the Homestead & Hollenbeck and Homestead & Kiely locations. Trust me when I say that is not a plus!!!! The plus comes from managers caring and wanting more. They still have some rude staff but they did a great job at exiting out those that don't understand service. Overall, it's good for the rest and since service is still improving they can't hit that 5 yet. read more

I experienced the worst customer support. I went there to cash out my lottery winnings. I had won 44 dollars. However, the lady (she is a manager) gave me wrong amount. I explained her that I had 3 scratchers and 2 lottery tickets with a total of 44 however, it took her two attempts to check and give me the correct amount. I understand this happens sometimes when you are stressed out. However, its not right to vent your anger at customer when you are at fault and fail to do your job. She started shouting at me for asking my money. I wonder how you train your people when you are in a managerial position and lose your temper so easily. I decided to grab a steak dinner rather than going out to a restaurant. Safeway has a large selection of steaks from which to choose. To top off my decision to have an affordable dinner I was able to find a wonderful bottle of wine with the help of Dave in the wine department. He was knowledgeable, friendly, and helpful.
