I love having a grocery store near my house. Our Safeway is almost always overcrowded and often out of things that should be readily available at all times. The lines are continually extended throughout the main isle, to the point of having to walk to back of store just to get through to other side. Since it doesn't look like we will be getting an additional grocery store in Chino Valley, Safeway should consider expanding the store. The dirt lot to the North of the store could be utilized to expand, then possibly hire more checkers. read more

I have been shopping there 20 years and don't think it's a bad store. It is our main shopping store. I haven't had the problems many on here told about. I do check my receipt each time and if there are errors, the customer service person makes it right. read more

If I could give no stars, I would. I now call this store "un-Safeway". The Chino Valley, AZ location is the worst grocery store I've ever been to. The store is dirty and disgusting. The produce department is awful. All of the produce is rotten. I've tried so many times to select produce, only to get home, cut it open, and have to throw it away. I gave up on their produce. I wouldn't even give any of it to pigs in their trough. If it hasn't happened a multitude of times already, somebody is going to get very sick and end up in the hospital. Now the cans and jars of food items: Broken jar of beef gravy on the bottom shelf left which oozed around all the other jars and cans nearby and left there like that for so long that it caused those other jars and cans to stick to the shelf. More potential for disease and food poisoning. Bought an expensive package of chicken breasts, seemed fine in the store. Opened it up that evening to find that it had a faintly bad smell. The plastic had to be removed to detect it, but again, not eating any chicken with any kind of a bad smell. Also, as far as the quality of the other meats, even the meat department employee could not pick out a good cut of steak or roast. This store never has any good cuts of beef of any kind. Terrified to consider pork or seafood after the chicken and beef experience. Now for the Bakery! Most stores in the United States donate the day-old bread to the food shelters to feed the homeless and needy. "un-Safeway" keeps the day-old, and beyond on the shelf until the sell by date at full price. Not even a price reduction for bread that expires by the exact sell by date. The freezers and refrigerator doors are defrosting most of the time. Very unsafe. Ice Cream containers should not be squeezable. Bought milk a number of times that soured before the expiration date, and packages of cheese with mold. Every item in this store sells for at least $3 more than the same item at Walmart. I've discussed all of the problems with my friends, neighbors, my hairdresser, my doctor's office and doctor, my pet's veterinarians, and friends and family in other states considering a move to Chino Valley, AZ. My family and I have quit shopping at this store. If everyone just stopped wasting their time and money by shopping here and taking huge chances with their health, "un-Safeway" would have to become responsible and provide the healthful quality that a grocery store is supposed to provide for society. read more

CONSTANTLY overcharged on items that are supposed to be on sale, but never ring up at the correct discounted price at checkout. While the people are decent enough, the process at checkout is always a hassle due to their computers not having the promised discounts in their data bases. So it's "Can you help me?" nearly every time I shop there. It's just not worth it. Can't tell you how many times I scan my receipt later and see how I was screwed. And since Chino Valley lacks any competition for Safeway, there is zero reason for them to be more diligent. BTW, I am very much a nerd when it comes to tech. Build my own PC's, can write some code. So I know what is lacking here, I'm not some tech illiterate who gets confused by websites or cell apps. read more

With the egregious prices they charge customers, you'd think that someone could refill the window washing reservoirs in the Safeway gas station. No employees have refilled these reservoirs so that we can wash our vehicle windshields --- despite numerous polite requests. I guess their water hasn't been delivered (isn't Safeway's usual excuse?). Maybe they expect the individual who delivers their gasoline and diesel fuel to refill the reservoirs. Worst of all, I've asked if these could be refilled -- and was told they'd been done early that morning -- that all the water evaporated. At 120° F, maybe 10-15% of the water might, but these reservoirs have been bone-dry for a long time. A long, long time: not a hint of moisture in the window-wiper's sponge. You'd think that the indolent cashier at the gas pumps might actually do something more than play video games when there's not a customer paying cash for their fuel: counting change must be exhausting! It probably taxes their capabilities to actually get up, clean out the reservoirs (they're all filled with dust, dirt, and bug debris -- dried for weeks since they were last filled) then fill the containers with some clean water. I left a written note asking the store manager to telephone me to see if we might be able to negotiate having these reservoirs filled, but no call. I asked the shift store manager of she could see fir to have these serviced so that we can clean our windshields -- but the look she gave me told me to "mind my own business." That's alright. I'll go elsewhere for my gas -- to one of the other Chino Valley gas stations that are actually in the business of serving their customers. They no doubt understand that their gas customers actually need to clean their windshields. Sure enough: their gas pump aisles actually have water-filled reservoirs and paper towels, Squeegies that look like they were purchased in the past year or two. Customer service, yanno? Actually. serving the interests of your customers, not just your bottom line. I don't know what Safeway is doing. Neither do they. read more

Horrible customer service!!! Tried to purchase ten items today. This was tuesday october 15 at 12:30 PM. Cashier Danelle (Stutt) kept ten people waiting in the checkout for twenty minutes while she repeatedly kept trying to incompetently give someone purchase discounts (through the Safeway APP) after doing this for ten minutes, she tried it for multiple times instead of directing the customer to customer service as should have done. I can only assume this "customer" was a friend or relative, otherwise I can't understand while she would inconvenience ten other customers. This store is incompentely managed and this employee has zero customer service skills and should be disciplined or terminated. overall this store consistently is terrible. read more

I was looking for an item,when I couldn't find it I attempted to ask an employee, not knowing this was the manager she rolled her eyes after seeing her flirting with another worker. I didn't realize that Safeway was also a whore house for the managers, but when the same lady was called to the front it took her about 10 minutes to come up and IMMEDIATELY gave us attitude. If it was up to me she should not work in a customer service industry I would NEVER go back to this store i would much rather Fry's because they respect their customers. Check receipt as they seem to always overcharge something! They change tags before they change the system, so it's not cashier's fault but man it happens a lot. MEATS: I don't know if the butchers suck or they're doing what they're told, but there's always a lot of fat. Looks good but when you get it home & open it...makes me wish I waited till Fry's trip. DELI: an older Blond woman, I think must be Deli Mgr kinda rude, impatient. Told off a co-worker in front of me & it was uncomfortable AND very unprofessional. I understand that people are buying out everything right now, but, you should have staff making sure the shelves,etc., are clean. Would give zero if I could. This store would not sell alcohol to my nephew who is a military veteran and had an out of state ID. He looks young but he had valid IDs. We just had a funeral today and wanted to unwind, so he went to the store for the family. The clerk rejected both valid IDs, one was state of Washington ID, was one that says not 21 until such and such date but was already past that date and over 21. So he pulled out his Navy Military ID, and the clerk said safeway in state of AZ DOES NOT ACCEPT MILITARY IDs. I don't think this woman understood it is a federal ID, my nephew has traveled the world with it as a nuclear naval submarine specialist, but I guess SAFEWAY IN CHINO VALLEY, AZ does not recognize military veteran identification. Wonder why TSA AND OTHER COUNTRIES DO??? Not shopping at a place that DOES NOT HONOR VETERANS! I highly recommend take your business elsewhere!! read more

I will no longer shop in this grocery store after management leaves for the day, leaving the night employees on duty. While there are some good employees I have witnessed on the night shift, there are far too many other employees that must make it a frustrating work environment for employees that enjoy their job and are good at it. These other employees are my area of concern, they tend to act like children running around a school yard playground and are absolutely worthless in customer service. These staff members at any given visit can be prone to: look lazy, look bored, act silly, stand around talking to one and other ignoring customers, complain how long it is to closing time, bully/intimidate smaller employees, and many show little to no enthusiasm towards their job or their customers. I have rarely had a night shift employee on the floor in the aisles be friendly or helpful in anyway. Usually the rare employee I might run into in an aisle just tend to make me feel unwanted and act more like I am an annoyance than a paying customer that keeps this establishment in business which in-turn provides them with a paycheck And if you ask about something being out of stock on a shelf the employees tend to be rude and surly. Once, not too many trips ago, one young "management" employee even told me to come back during "regular" business hours for my request as they couldn't look in the stock room for anything as they did not have an employee back there... my thought was, but you open right now? I just let it go... I am sure there is plenty of work for these night employees to do, but I can only assume the management isn't instructing them on how to do so or as may be the case the employees have no self motivation to do a good job. Those that are not self motivated might seek employment elsewhere in my opinion as they are setting a terrible example for their customer's to witness. I had a long talk with the store manager and I feel even stronger now, after our conversation, nothing changed after my most resent visit, perhaps not taking me serious, perhaps his hands are tied by the union. I don't know. What I do know is I can shop in Prescott before commuting home. read more

Prices are high but that's typical for this supermarket chain. It has been consolidated with others the past few years, each time the new management claiming better pricing for consumers but never delivering. The store is clean but they have pretty much a monopoly so their need to improve things isn't a priority. Take for example the water fountain. How long has it been inoperative? With the pricing one would think that would be handled promptly but it otherwise shows their lack of caring to the customer. I too have noticed the slack management when it comes to manning the registers when things get busy, which seems to be all too often when I visit. Some of the items that are stocked are obviously done by ones that either care less or lack very basic fundamentals. Recently, store brand soda was featured at the end of an aisle. Only 2 flavors were there, but I can overlook that. What I found surprising was in order to remove product I had to slide out the crate it was stacked on and return the crate, or in this case, put the empty crate behind the display so the next customer wouldn't have to do what I did. A few days later I returned only to find things the way they were before. I would only wish a chain that caters to customers that I have experienced that has great pricing & is very aware of customers opinions but unfortunately the nearest stores are in Phoenix. I am referring to WINCO. Now my opinion is if WINCO would open a market in Chino Valley, not only would it give Safeway a real run for the money but would attract buyers from a very wide area. I would venture to say 70 miles or possibly even more. Their pricing alone would make a trip like that very worth while. read more

The new Safeway "safe" policies are ridiculous, and they are the only store still making people use one door only and you have to stand in one very lo-o-o-ng line to check out. Not only do I not want to waste time standing in line while they direct people to the ONE check out stand that's open (and, by the way, how does reducing the check out lines to ONE help in any way with the virus concerns?!), I also resent being treated like a child. I am an adult and can make my own decisions regarding health concerns. They are stepping over the line as far as I'm concerned. I will drive into Prescott to shop from now on. I can get better produce and meats, and save money anyway, so it will be worth the drive! read more

I have always liked the Safeway in Chino Valley, AZ but will no longer shop there for my own safety. I was there a few days ago and there are signs all over the place saying Mask Required, however probably 1/3 of the customers were unmasked. When I asked a staff member about that, I was told "We can't enforce it." Seems to me they could enforce it as do many other places. Also, yesterday at the Chino Valley Post Office about 1/2 of the customers were unmasked. What's with this? Not like we are asking that much. the store is pretty good. i have aproblem with the customer service and one of the "managers" I've never before witnessed cashiers treated so poorly by the person thats supposed to support them. She's never nice at least when she's around. I forget her name but she's the new manager up there. also baggers? never any around when it's busy there, which is pretty much all the time at this store. also, it's always hot. Do they not turn on the air conditioning enough? thats not good. otherwise the store isn't bad. Night is the best time to go, after 7 pm. the people that work to the store closing are super nice and helpful, i've seen them helping the older customers shop and find stuff high up on shelves which doesn't happen in the early afternoon. They're always busy then too, but a much nicer group of people that work at night. read more

You need 15 for this check out. I had 16. I counted them and asked the cashier if she could check out for me and she threw her arms up and said "I guess". That did it for me. I'm done with Safeway. I've been shopping at this store for almost 20 years, since before they moved to their current location, and in the last few years it has gone progressively worse. The store is almost always crowded and the checkout lines are insane. Other Safeway stores I shop at have a policy of opening another checkout when there are more than three customers in line, but this store does not seem to do that. People are generally as friendly here as other area supermarkets, and the store is reasonably well maintained. Safeway prices are generally higher than competitors, but on the other hand most sale prices do not require a certain quantity of items; for example "4 for $10" usually means $2.50 each even if you buy less than 4. Unfortunately, the ridiculous checkout lines and crowded aisles make this store a very unpleasant shopping experience overall. I try to do my shopping in Prescott now whenever possible, despite living only 5 minutes from the Chino store. Note: they recently removed the four self-checkout stations and added two small express lines in their place. read more

I live in Chino Valley and am grateful that the one grocery store in town has great management which is supportive of student organizations and quickly resolves any problem as well as friendly staff. Specials are an excellent value, produce fresh, store clean and I enjoy shopping here. read more

I shop in Safeway because of their fresh fruit, vegetable, meat, deli and fish. The Safeway in Chino Vally have very nice fresh products and much better than other of the supermarked i tried in Prescott. I don't know why so many says they are expensive. If you are a member you get discounts on many items and that make the combined price level fair. I live in Prescott but I still drive to Chino Vally to shop in Safeway not only because of the good products but the staff is also friendly and you get up to USD 1,00 in discount on fuel when you collect 10 rewards point. That also contribute to the fair price level. read more

I buy Organics tortilla chips at Safeway, the only supermarket in Chino Valley. They cram them on the shelves so tight that you're lucky to get a few whole chips in the bag. Frozen Organic brand vegetables are no longer there.I have to search the store for a carrying basket because there are rarely any at the entrance. I now go to Fry's for my prescriptions ( it's worth the drive because Safeway is slow and they haven't a clue how to get organized.) They call you when a prescription is ready and when you go to pick it up it takes them a long time to finally tell me that it's not ready. Disorganized. I recently purchased a Tres Leches Cake for a 5 year old birthday party. The cake was way overpriced, they took my order wrong and at the end they said it was my fault. I took the cake home and the guest hated it, i order a tres leches cake so is supposed to be super moist. this cake was stale and very dried it tasted like salt, and when chewing on it if felt like gum. The staff on the bakery department(whoever answered my call) was very rude and said that this was my fault. When i told her i would no longer be buying from them she answered that she was glad and hanged up. From now on i would be buying my cakes from Sams Club where you get more for your money and much better quality. Buy the Marble cake is delicious and moist.
