Came here at 10pm on Memorial Day, and received absolutely 0 service. The store was empty, and when we walked in, the haggard cashier just looked at us wo a single greeting. She had no customers and was just standing there. Upon self-checkout, another haggard lady said to us, "Make it quick, I'm closing the check-out." What kind of customer service is that!? Therefore, I let my 2.5yr child scan the items. My baby loved scanning all the groceries. It was by far, the slowest self checkout I've ever had, and I did this purposely. Okay, I know some CV locals were sad to see the old PW Market disappear after 67 years. But honesty, PW lacked the clout to get some big name vendors into their store, and many times, I had seen their shelves bare. Now instead of being forced to serve Granny Goose chips to guests, I have a plethora of choices for unhealthy salty, savory, and nacho cheesy snacks. For those of you who miss the old PW, the set up is exactly the same, with the addition of new checkstands, including a self service check out. If you're like me, and you hate the parking lot at the Redwood Road location (not to mention the construction), then you're going to love switching to this Safeway location up the hill. read more

I like this store. I really do, never had any issues- but then again I never need assistance. This particular review is about an "Assistant Manager" named Gail Tan. So incredibly rude. I went to the store for few things and to do 2 WIC transactions. I get it, doing WIC is a pain in the a**, complain to the state. Mind you, I am very organized with my transactions, always making sure they are separated and everything is as it should be to make everyone's life easier. She keeps looking at me and my stuff, like I did something wrong, and then when I sign- Which I do not have degree in Graphology ( Hand writing analysis) but my signature def. does not look off. She told me that the signature does not match and she wasn't going to process my transaction. Are you serious? I'm like- What you want my ID or something? She did- totally checked my ID. Hella rude and lightweight discriminating. What, because I have tattoos, and get WIC, do you think in uneducated? Don't work? LOL.. B please.I am educated & work Full time-Have since I was 16. I shopped at Petrini's and PW for many years, and was disappointed at having to change to Safeway last year after the closure of PW. (I also loathe the Safeway "club card", but that's another matter.) The Safeway in downtown CV is OK, but Petrini's and PW were better markets with higher quality. The new Safeway on the east end of town has been advertised as a "Lifestyle store", whatever that means. I hoped that it would be a bit more upscale than the downtown store, so I went there yesterday. In addition to my regular shopping, I searched for four items that I could always find at PW but not at the downtown Safeway (5-minute Cream of Wheat, Boar's Head roast beef and turkey, Hansen diet cherry soda, and Tillamook cheddar cheese in 8-ounce packages). The result of my shopping expedition? Zero for four. As far as I could tell, the selection at the new Safeway is no better than that at the old one. It's also 1.3 miles farther away from my house. Petrini's and PW were worth the extra drive; but the new Safeway offers no advantage over the old one except that the parking lot and the store are less crowded. I'm disappointed that Castro Valley can't support a better store, and that the Safeway/Lucky monopoly has been extended. In short, it's a Safeway -- not awful, but nothing special. I'm always terribly envious whenever I visit an Andronico's Market in Berkeley. Safeway's motto should be, "We strive for mediocrity." read more

This safeway is currently staffed well but not one person to be found at the sandwich bar. You can wait there, wave to staff, but never get a response. Otherwise the store is stocked well and kept clean. They just need better and more responsive staff at the front line. read more

I always forget about this store. It never fails. When I'm leaving my parents' house on Kelly st. in Hayward, despite it being closer, I just never think about turning right to go to the grocery store. This one in particular doesn't pose any real benefit from any other Safeway apart from its proximity from my parents' house. It is a smaller Safeway store, so there might be some limitations in the variety or quantity of certain products. I had one particularly long experience waiting for a sandwich because there was only one person busy making like 6 wraps for this guy. There were three or four people behind her that could have come helped me at any point, but they just kept on doing what they were doing. It was a little frustrating because I was trying to get going, but it turned out being an okay sandwich. read more

I frequent this location the most as it's the closest to my house. That aside, I must say this location is one of my favorites. It seems a bit smaller than the 2 other close locations (Redwood and Foothill), but they came in after PW shut down so they've made due with what they were given. Another reason I like this location is they carry some products that the other 2 usually don't. Food products seem to always be cycled in and out as needed, and things that need to be fresh are actually fresh. Most of the product has multiple options and not just one brand. The deli and meat area have a plethora of options. Another plus is they know what mortadella is AND they carry it! Their cheeses, deli meats, salads, etc. always look fresh. Meats are plentiful, the fish 9 times out of 10 don't smell fishy (sometimes it does, but not even that bad). Service overall is always pleasant. Some staff have kind of mastered the resting face, but I can usually get them to smile and engage. It's just not pleasant walking up to when I pay out... There are a few clerks who are true gems and I always try to seek them out if I'm not doing self-checkout. One thing I appreciate about the clerks on the express lane is they usually regulate 15 items or less. Big plus - they're NEVER rude about it. My 2.5 complaints are as follows: Some product is locked up, thanks to people who find it OK to steal. So now the rest of us have to suffer and try to find someone to unlock the case. My .5 complaint is that I hardly ever see a staff member walking around the store, which would help in this situation. You have to go to a line and request help, then wait (and sometimes waaaaiiiitttt). My other complaint is that their produce section is often low or completely empty of certain items. I understand that they're ordering based on sales, and don't want to waste money to have produce go bad. Jalapeños though should be stocked pretty heavily. Every time I've gone in, they're low in supply. There are a few other items that tend to be low or out, but overall they're stocked OK. The fruit selection is quite impressive, I must say! Will these concerns make me want to shop elsewhere? Absolutely not. Overall, I really enjoy this location. They're a pretty good model for how Safeways everywhere should be run. read more

I love the location and the fact that there is always parking no matter what time I come. The big minus is that their selection is pretty limited. That can be a little frustrating at times, but it is down the street from me. It has always been clean and I can get help when I need it. It's much better than going to the other CV one or the ones in Hayward. read more

If your looking to get stuff in a hurry or something specific, don't go here! It will take you longer up top than lower Safeway due to poor staffing and they probably won't have what your looking for! I'm not a fan of Safeway in general because they have high prices but I go there since it's right by my house, but sheesh! They never have what I want. I haven't experienced any bad service like other people are saying though. What I really wanted to write about was the Pet aisle.... I went there for a scooper for my cat's litter box. And under "Cat supplies", there was only bird food and other lame things that don't relate to cats at all. I should be able to find a scooper ANYWHERE that sells cat food... but not here!!!! WTF? Do they expect cats to eat and not poop or what? They also never have the flavor of Fancy Feast that my cat likes so I have to drive all the way to WalMart. Glad it's open 24 hours, but what's the point if they don't have what I want? 24 hours of frustration. However, on a more positive note, the pharmacy is GREAT! Low prices, pretty fast service. Every time I come to this Safeway I always have an annoying and unpleasant experience. It just seems like most employees here are rude, into themselves and engage in personal conversations. Yeah, they say, "hi, how are you?" But the rest of the conversation is history, smacking their gym or are very annoyed to be dealing with you. I go to this one for in and out item grabs as it is always hassle free and I can usually find someone to help if I can't find an item. Safeway does Nob Hill. Definetely my new favorite Hayward/CV Supermarket! This one is better than the other crap markets in the area: 12 ft of organic produce, Natural Meats counter, great selection of good quality stuff, and then of course... all the other schlock you don't want to admit you eat. Certianly better than driving to Alameda or Berkeley! Talked to Sean (old PW staff: now a S manager) and he said they're TAKING SUGGESTIONS NOW. So walk in and tell them what you want to see in the store. As for me? Non-homogenized organic dairy, maybe a touch more organic/free trade/some such Yuppie Chow, and I'll shop there exclusively! read more

This is one of the better Safeways around, and it's close to home, so it's the one I most frequent. The grocery store has everything I've needed, foodwise, and staff/clientele are more pleasant than the surrounding area. I can always find a parking spot and the checkout line is easy; at self-checkout I rarely have to wait at all. Finding ripe bananas is hit or miss. read more

Very unhappy with Veronica the manager when Dina Was not there. Specifically the computer had an Inaccurate price and I corrected the cashier about the price on the sticker. I then pointed to the price accuracy guarantee on the checkout register or promising to give 5 dollars off or the item free. The cashier guy with the buttons said he had to ask Dina who had left early that day. He then got Veronica who said that she would not honor the rules written on the wall because the transaction had not yet been paid for. She said that if it's caught before payment we won't give the price accuracy guarantee. I was very disappointed because the Safeway's prices are so expensive and the only way they will correct it is if they already took away your extra money. read more

Talking bout the Safeway that replaced the PW a few years back. Everytime I shop there I ask myself what on earth I was thinking! Sunday, Monday and Tuesday the shelves have not been stocked--that happens Wednesdays. But those are the days I usually need stuff. Veggies are wilted. Bread is stale. The unfortunate workers have to put up with all the complaining and that seems to have taken its toll. Without naming individuals it's very clear who hates working there and who really hates working there. None of the staff is happy. Really a very poor grocery shopping experience. What happened to this store? I can acknowledge how acutely difficult it is right now to navigate through these challenging times, but the degrading customer service is totally uncalled for at this store. The reception at the door was too much. The tone was demeaning as if I was a child needing direction. The cashier was the worst. She berated me on where I should stand and unload my cart. Then she complained how everyone needed to relax and have a sense of humor. Not sure to whom she was referring, but she was the actual irritable and disagreeable one. Then she and the clerk, who bagged my groceries, started to complain about how annoying the little old ladies were, "They come here to socialize and stay way too long, chit chatting in the aisles, or even in the rain outside last week." The cashier chimed in, "Well, they tired of being cooped up inside and they need some social interaction. But this isn't the place for it!" In the meantime, as my groceries were being bagged, the gentleman after me in line put down one item on the conveyor belt. The cashier yelled at him to remove the item and wait for her approval to start unloading his basket. Too much! If you don't want to work, then stay at home. It is just as hard for us to shop in the world. The store was mediocre at best before, but now it is intolerable. And still no toilet paper on the shelves. NEVER again. I'm done. read more

The best thing about this store is most of it is clean. The East CV Safeway is over all a necessary evil. You MIGHT find some of the things you need but don't expect it or helpfulness or a smile except for select few which don't include ANY of the front checkers, baggers, or managers*. I have shopped here because my home has been near by for 8 years. Every time I come back I wonder why? Most people in CV know you can't count on this Safeway having everything you need and the only reason it is used so much is because there is no competition, you feel slightly safer (no pun intended) than the Redwood Road location. And the other store has sushi and coffee. Safeway Corp: WAKE UP and pay attention to the lacking and opportunity to profit at the East CV Safeway location. *The guys behind the counter of the meat and fish department are regularly helpful and nice. My experience with Linda in cashiering brings me to write this review today. Linda is very, VERY aggressive. She absolutely went off on our family in a political rage - calling names, using expletives, and becoming physically aggressive. Safeway management, you NEED to speak with Linda and figure out what is going on. Other than this interaction, this Safeway usually has a friendly environment - precisely why I feel so inclined to bring Linda's behavior to the attention of Safeway management. read more

Close to the 580-W&E freeway entrances, which is nice. The only drawback about this store is that the size isn't really fitting for a regular sized Safeway, but I'm sure the people in the big ol' corporate offices in Pleasanton noticed that as well. Safeway recently moved their new store here after the old P&W closed its business. The food is usually fresh and the produce is fresh as well. Late at night, they usually run out of bananas and fuji apples. Staff is overall friendly. I can tell that the managers are working tirelessly to maintain a high-quality store which is good to see. Looking good, new CV Safeway! As an alternative to the crowded Safeway stores (and parking lots!) in the CV Village and Dublin/Pleasanton, I am so pleased to stock, shop, and save here! When I entered for the first time after their grand opening, I felt as if I were walking into Whole Foods. I've been serenely returning ever since with a smile on my face. Staff is refreshing, embracing customers with cheerful content and kindness. ***All I request is they please stock more inventory, mainly the fresh produce and especially the green herbs.*** Tip: if you're on a budget and need a wedding cake - order it from Safeway, and add fresh flowers - you'll be amazed how delectable and elegant your confection feast will be!! read more

I really want to like this Safeway. It's close to my home and open 24 hours. My biggest complaint is that I cannot buy milk here. Every time I visit, this Safeway is out of fat free organic milk. Obviously this is a very popular item in this neighborhood, so the store should restock more frequently. After the last visit, I decided to take a photo and complain directly to the Safeway store. This is a small-ish Safeway with a smaller selection and higher prices than the nearby location. On the plus side, there are fewer people here and faster check-out. However, I bought some ice cream cones here that had obviously melted, SEPARATED, and re-froze. Ewww. When I called to complain, the lady answering the phone said they'd been having problems with the refrigeration, but the manager acted like he was hearing about it for the first time. They offered a refund but of course I had thrown away the receipt. Anyway, I'm highly suspicious of their refrigeration now and prefer to go to the other location. read more

This is where I shop 90% of the time, but maybe not anymore. I was just the unfortunate Saturday morning shopper who accidentally drops a jar of tomato sauce at the checkstand. Sauce & glass chards are everywhere. I'm wearing flip flops, lady behind me in line gets sauced, people walk by stepping in glass and commenting. I'm of course embarrassed, apologizing for being careless. The checker was not in the least concerned about the safety of her customers. Meanwhile, I'm cut & bleeding, but she never asked me or anyone else if they were ok. She was downright rude to me, only caring about herself and that she might be bothered to open another lane. Aside from clean up the mess myself, what really can I do, but stand there and take her abuse whilst she continued to ring up my items. Great way to start my weekend, Safeway! This review is for the deli department. Placed an order for a All star meat and cheese platter and a condiment tray yesterday to be ready at 6:30am today and they said no problem. Came in 6:40 and they hadn't started it. My work started at 8am in san fransisco and I had to leave immediately to make it time. Had to call a bunch of safeways in the city to try to rush an order by 11am. 2 of them were booked allready and refused, luckily jackson street safeways deli said they could do it. I bought a Turkey sandwich it at the deli a year or so ago, and they gave me the crappiest dried out cheese and refrigerator tasting turkey I swore I would never give them another dime. Well, hunger got the best of me today, and against my better judgement I went back and got a pulled pork sandwich. Absolutely disgusting.
