My experience at this Safeway was extremely disappointing and uncomfortable. My husband and I felt that we were racially profiled. Three days ago, my husband and I came in to purchase ingredients for sandwiches and some candy. While shopping, we were looking for banana peppers and asked a white female employee with blonde hair (approximately 5'5", thin build, around 35-50 years old) if she could help us. She stated that she was "not a pro" and told us to ask someone else. This made it clear she was likely not a manager, as most managers should know product locations or at least be able to direct customers to someone who can help. After we checked out and paid for our groceries, and within seconds of leaving the store, the same employee ran outside and aggressively demanded to see our receipt. We already had an Uber waiting, yet she repeatedly asked, "Where are your groceries? I need to see your receipt," over and over again in a rude and unprofessional manner. She made it seem as though we had stolen a large amount of food. What made this situation even more uncomfortable was that we appeared to be the only customers targeted in this way. There wasNO CALM or respectful approach--CHASING US OUTSIDE!!!!! and speaking to us in an accusatory tone was completely unnecessary and inappropriate. No customer, especially people of color, should be made to feel embarrassed, accused, or profiled after paying for their items. This experience was highly unprofessional, and I hope management takes this seriously so no one else has to go through something like this again. I WILL NOT BE RETURNING THERE!!! read more

10:49 on a Saturday morning. Only one check stand open with a line about four customers deep. We only had four items in our cart, but we don't use self-checkout on principle and the under-15 Items line was not open. Checker did not call for an additional checker but eventually one came up and pulled my wife (next in line) to another checkstand. We prefer this store over Redwood Road for quick hits but we'll go to Redwood Road for the fuller selection of items. read more

Safeway on Redwood ... Just left about 30mins ago. I am so, very upset at how the cashier "Brenda" spoke me about me asking her a question. She stated "why" did I ask her a question if, I already had the all the answers"? Brenda, job is to render service to the customer instead she rending she rendered: unprofessionalism, classless, dismissive, condescending, belittling, and tacky. Safeway, has always had the best Customer Service at Safeway on Redwood not today. she was unnecessarily nasty. I bought some Driscoll raspberries the other day when they were on sale. I came home and opened them up and they were all moldy. I would have returned them but I'm 5 miles to my Safeway so i just threw them all away. Maybe that's why they were on sale. So disappointing and frustrating. read more

I've picked up a few desserts for family/friend get togethers and they never disappoint and guests will ask "mmm where did you get this cake?" Items we tried and pass the taste/texture and price-point test: :: Tres Leches - comparing to an authentic version can't say but it's delicious with added berries or other fruit. :: Tuxedo Cake - always a hit and not quite like the warehouse/wholesale club but delicious :: Boston Cake White - cream, white cake with strawberries :: Boston Cream Chocolate - cream, white cake with a layer of chocolate ganache Just Desserts Chocolate and Carrot Cake - yummy. I am so sick and tired of people bringing their dogs into a place that prepares food. I've seen dogs in the cart, peeing on clothing. Safeway does nothing. It's against the California health code unless it's truly a service dog. Safeway put up a sign like all the other better grocery stores. read more

Officially the worst Safeway. I called an hour before my pickup order would be ready to get help modifying the order. They left me on hold for 20mins, then hung up on me. I called again, was left on hold for 20 mins, and when they finally picked up and I was explaining the issue, they hung up on me again. Like in the middle of my sentence. And it's wasn't a call disconnect, it was HANGING UP THE PHONE. I was not being rude or yelling or anything that could possibly justify this. read more

Usually when I patron this Safeway, they're ALWAYS out of stock on things and there isn't anyone restocking. However, today I went in around 1030am and EVERYTHING was stocked AND there were employees restocking small things here and there. What I have noticed with having two Safeways in Castro Valley is...the one up the hill (this one) seems to have a little more room in regards to it not being (or appearing) too busy. However, 9 out of 10 times they're out of items a lot. This particular was a 5 star day however, usually its a 2 star day so for that reason, I am settling on a 3 because its fair based on MY experiences with this location. read more

Baker (older short lady) at this Safeway has changed the baguettes appearance and taste from being the same to all other stores. It's heavy, smaller and seems old although she's claimed to have personally baked them in the morning. These baguettes are not the same as ALL Safeway by having taken away the quality, taste, freshness and enjoyment. This purchased reminded me why I stop shopping at 580 Market place Safeway. On the other hand, the deli meat ladies provided me with good costumer service. Consider retraining the baguette baker so this location can again sell fresh crunchy tasty full size bag baguette in sourdough and sweet taste. read more

In a time of uncertainty due to covid, I have to say that this Safeway is one of the cleanest ones! I love how they have someone who is specifically assigned to sanitize every cart and that there is a system in place that designates sanitized vs unsanitized carts. I love how there are practically always wipes (and hand sanitizer!) available for customer use so I can make sure I can wipe what I need to down as I go. Other Safeways are usually out of wipes and don't even have hand sanitizer available. I Iove how there are much fewer people who shop at this location so that it reduces the exposure and the patrons seem to also be much more careful than that of the Safeway on redwood road. During covid, I choose this Safeway over any other one. This Safeway seems to be better stocked w the items I need or want for the most part as opposed to other Safeways that often run out of popular items. There are some drawbacks at this location, however. The checkers tend to be less friendly and less willing to help here as opposed to the Safeway on Redwood. There are fewer checkers available, so the lines can be long unless you use self checkout. But during covid, I can't complain and still would rather come here because safety is my priority! read more

Floor manager wouldn't open men's room for three elderly gentleman. States she was too busy. When one stated that wasn't customer service she told him to shop somewhere else! Very rude behavior to folks who regularly shop there. Remember, there are folks around to see how you treat customers!This is why Trader Joe's and Sprouts have loyal customers. Their restrooms are clean and open. There are friendly and helpful staff and prices are better. Keep this place off your grocery shopping locations. Safeway Dublin is a much better choice if you are looking to shop at a Safeway. The main store near Redwood Road is better but parking is too congested. read more

I find that this location is easier to find parking and I usually don't have to wait long in lines to checkout. The thing that does take me a while (might be because I don't really live in the area and I am not super familiar with where products are) is when I am trying to locate a certain ingredient or product. For the time that I had been trying to find something and gave up when I couldn't figure it out, I have randomly asked other shoppers where it would be (like agave syrup), lol. Growing up in the area, this used to be my go-to Safeway because of the convenience, proximity to the location, and the parking lot in general seemed nicer than on Redwood road. Over the years, the staff has gone from super nice and accommodating to now seeming like we're bothering them and interrupting their daydream session. Specifically one employee who's mentioned over 4 times in the past 6 months is Dorothy, with seemingly no meaningful changes from the management. She seems overly disrespectful and acts like her job is such an inconvenience to her. I tried to help her out by offering to bring an item closer to scan and she just rolls her eyes and tells me to put it down and says condescendingly "it's not time for that, sir." I shrug it off, maybe it's just a difference of opinion in hospitality. She then begrudgingly tells me to "pull up." So I walk up to the card reader, she rolls her eyes at me again then says "the cart. Pull it up." - maybe a misunderstanding(?) Then once I pull the cart up - I let her know I grabbed two containers of water in case she didn't notice - to which she responded more aggravated "I have good vision, sir." No idea what I did or said to deserve the attitude, but I won't be coming back - considering this employee has had several complaints against her and no change has happened. read more

I went in after a long day at work at finding out some bad news about my mother. The last thing I need was bad customer service. I don't understand how they tolerate certain employees and allow them to continue working there. I've worked in customer service most my life and have never treated anyone like this. The day was also a hot day 100 degrees. I went shopping and everything was normal up until I accidentally forgot something and had to go back in that's when two ladies started to make sly and rude comments as I walked back in making jokes, then as I'm checking out at self checkout a lady makes more comment about the things I'm wearing. It was crunch time for the senior prom and we realized the flowers were lost in the shuffle. After calling five places and being reminded of the obvious "you should have pre ordered" the classic "we are booked" and the painful "tomorrow is Mother's Day sorry". I was directed from one Safeway flower department to this one. An angel answered my call and instead of making me feel lower than four flat tires, I saw the clouds part! Golden sunshine broke through and it was all rainbows and unicorns!! On the other side of that phone was Jane, of the Safeway flower department, asking what I wanted and assuring me she could do it. Second time I've gotten ice cream that seems to have been thawed out (possible in transport) and re-almost frozen). Since neither carton of ice cream was a cheep brand, it sucks to waste good money on inedible ice cream. Also, I rarely ask for assistance in finding an item, so having to seek out an employee only to find the item before she did was super annoying. Just tell me you don't know, but you'll ask someone. Don't have me wait for you for 5 mins, only to give up and find it myself. I mistakenly thought that someone stocking the shelves would be able to tell me where products were kept. read more

Wow, didn't realize I hadn't reviewed this Safeway. First, it's the nicest Safeway I regularly visit. They have a larger selection of items, particularly in the specialty section. This Safeway is laid out different than others I visit, but I've been here enough that I'm getting used to it. I often will do weekly shopping here over other Safeway options, even though it is the furthest away. Now this may sound silly, but one draw is the liquor here, at least what I purchase, is not under lock and key. That makes a big difference. When it's locked up, a person with a key must be tracked down. I also find the staff here to be super nice. Parking can be difficult during peak times, but isn't that pretty much standard anywhere in the Bay Area? As mentioned, of the three Safeway groceries I frequent, this is the furthest away, but it is my favorite. read more

The employees do not care, they are rude and will completely ignore you, talk to each other only and if ask for help or need to be rung up, they act as if you're inconveniencing them by actually making them do their jobs. This is post is directed to the bakery. I ordered a cake for my birthday and wanted chocolate with chocolate buttercream frosting on top. Along with rainbow swirled roses on the bottom sides & purple & red roses on top. When I saw the results, I loved the roses on top, but noticed that the ones on the bottom edge were not rainbow swirled. And when I asked if the frosting on top was chocolate, the lady who took my order & sold it said it was. IT WASN'T! As you can clearly see in the pic, the roses on the bottom aren't rainbow swirled & the frosting isn't chocolate. This is getting 2 stars for the roses & decorating. I don't appreciate being lied to just so they can finish other tasks. Unless they hire someone else with better customer service skills, I'm never ordering from this bakery again. read more

This used to be the old P+W market. Changed owners about 4-6 years ago. Had an avocado chicken and bacon sandwich along with a super food kale salad. There were blueberries in it and some other good stuff. Sandwich freshly made in front of me. Floors are the trendy concrete type where you can see old tile outlines from 30 years ago or so. They are polished and clean and colored just a bit with some concrete stain. This is a smaller market but it seems as if they squeeze most of it in. Lots of stores around this place in a strip mall so if you combine trips with the credit union or gym or BBQ place you've got a well planned afternoon. Parking was doable at around 8pm today, Wednesday 8/3/16... and it usually is not a problem. Although I miss the old P+W - especially their bakery - it is good to see this place still alive under a new name. We must learn to embrace innovation and change. read more

On Saturday this was my second stop for groceries because the first place didn't have bread, lettuce, and other things I needed. When I walked in a gentleman standing my the door offered to wipe my cart. That made a world of difference. Going through the store I noticed they had a lot of items other store were out of. I figured I'd try to find flour (which I haven't been able to find for weeks) they had it! While I was checking out the cashier was friendly and talkative which I appreciate the interaction. I thanked him for working and making it possible for me to get my groceries his answer "we have to do our part for our community" ahh my heart. Such a wonderful experience all around.
