This evening I visited the Safeway in Fairwood/ Bowie MD with my 5 year old daughter around 7pm and as always the store is nice and clean and the employees are always nice and willing to assist. My visit went well until I stop at the Starbucks located inside the store. I ordered my drink and my daughter asked for a cake pop. When I asked the cashier to add it to my order the cashier, a tall plus sized Hispanic woman looked at me and said, "We don't got no more cake pops". There were clearly 2 cake pops left in the display window. I looked over to where the last 2 cake pops were and my daughter walked over to the window and pointed to them. I asked her were they a display or something and she never looked at me she just nodded and mumbled something under her breath. There was a block shaped thing with empty holes holding the last two cake pops up which meant those empty holes were once occupied by more cake pops that was sold to other customers through out the day. Before making my drink she quickly walked over to the display window and cut the light off. If this woman was saving the last cake pops for herself ( because it was getting close to her shutting down for the evening), it probably would've been smart to just remove the last 2 cake pops from the display window instead of lying and refusing to sell them to a customer and a small child who could see that there was some left. The woman's snappy attitude was something I wasn't used to at that location that I frequent a lot. I called the store manager to make a complaint and she was apologetic but didn't seem surprised at all about what happened. read more

Has gone downhill from Day 1. Produce is always moldy, dairy is NEVER stocked, and it's a constant bitch session with most employees. Don't get me wrong - there are several very pleasant employees there but unfortunately they are overpowered by the attitude of the other disgruntle employees. POOR Management is to blame - I never see the Manager there anymore. I shop here because it's less than a mile from my house and convenient. I'm not sure how much longer I will continue to shop here with the current state of the store. So much potential but NO ONE cares. We wrote to the CEO as well, no response. If he doesn't care, why should the managers? Incredible. read more

This Safeway is horrible but thanks to their ideal location they don't have to improve to still make a mint. I like to give criticism that can be used constructively to improve service but that would imply that management had no idea what was going on. This I believe not to be the case since management is partly the problem. Where to begin first the lines are always long it doesn't matter when you go there day or night, rush hour or off hours. There is never more than 3 lines open no matter how long the lines are. The self- service checkouts scanners are always broken of the 6 expect only 2 to be actually working. The lottery machine is always broken and so is the western union machine. Which are not really broken no one wants to run them so they are just broken to you? The problem with this Safeway is that the sure volume of people means that they don't really care if you never come back they have more customers than they will ever need. The food does not have to be the freshest nor does the service or selection have to be that great. They know you are going to come back and even if you don't you think they care. Even if the regional office is just down the road a few miles (4551 Forbes Boulevard Lanham, MD 20706Edit details(301) 918-6500) you would think that some of the executives would stop in to see how things are going. The newer staff is always friendlier you can tell who hasn't been there very long. The true exception is the meat department, the sea food department, and the pharmacy. I know the residents of Fairwood wish they would have held out for a Wegmann's or a Harris Teeter. read more

I have been shopping at this location since it opened. They have always been pleasant, clean and well stocked. However, during the Coronavirus crisis they have not been thorough with cleanliness. There are no measures in place to clean during the transactions or visibly throughout the store which could lead to virus spreading. I have been to other grocery stores in the area during the pandemic that are doing due diligence, cleaning after each customer, cleaning carts etc. This store could do so much better. I am saddened that I need to go elsewhere to grocery shop. Please do better read more

I am a 4 time a week Safeway shopper and the staff, Kevin, the tall man with the curly hair that works self check out (I should learn his name), and Angel are always so pleasant (friendly) and helpful. However last night was a little different. I went in to purchase some items for a lunch I am attending today. Picked up some items that were on sale, the came up for a different price. I explained the price that was displayed and my cashier called another cashier, Ashante, to help. Ashante mentioned that the price I saw was incorrect and proceeded to just walk away. No offer to adjust to the price shown. I asked to speak to a manager and she proceeded to huff and puff and speak under her breathe. at one point she even said to the original cashier, "I'm going to need you to know what you're doing." I said to her if a there is something marked for a different price she had to give it to me for the price shown. She combated with something I cannot recall to which I said you cannot speak to customers like that and you shouldn't argue with customers. Her response was, " I'm not arguing with you, you're arguing with yourself." Thank God Ashante was not my first experience in my 5 years visiting Safeway. Attitude adjustment is needed or she should work stocking shelves. read more

I've been going to this store for the past 5 years. I like the new renovations, but they had to grow on me a bit. My biggest praise is for some of the management team and floor staff that I have encountered. They have never hesitated to personally walk me to the location of whatever I was seeking. I have to applaud one manager, Daniel, who during the busy holiday shopping season did not hesitate to help me take my 175 dollar order outside and load it into my car in the pouring rain, even without his jacket on. That's going the extra mile. I also like that this store is a market testing site, so we get random new stuff all the time. The only reason that they didn't receive a 5 from me are the register clerks. They used to be wonderfully friendly, but since about this summer, they must have changed the way they trained them. No longer do they say "thank you for shopping with Safeway, Mrs. xxx, would you like help outside with your bags". They just look at you blankly like, ok, are you going to move on now? I've taken to saying to them, "thank you, have a nice day", and they look surprised. The service provider is supposed to say that. And they don't always put all your stuff in the carriage, but most is in, so it's easy for you to assume they got it all and you may walk off and leave something. They really need to change how this team is trained and managed going forward. Other than that, I'll keep coming to shop. read more

I love this safeway. The staff is great alway ready to help. The lines move petty fast. The price are alway good. But the best thing is the gas price. I love the store read more

I've been shopping at this store weekly for the last 7 years since I moved in the community. The cashiers are generally friendly and their hours are great. They do not have some of the fancy special ingredients that we may occasionally need for that very special dish. They do have a good selection of the everyday items, the produce and fruits are generally very fresh. I have found some of the prepacked prepared foods to have dates that only allow a day or so to use. That would be my only complaint. They have a good selection of meat ,poultry and fish. You are not likely to find rabbit for that special dish, you will find bison burgers. read more

I have shopped at this Safeway for several years, and I find them to be the best grocery store in the area for most of my grocery shopping, except for their prices, they seem quite expensive on a few items. To compensate for that, I participate in their Just For U coupon and rewards program, and when I buy only the items on sale and use the Just For U program, it's very affordable, even better prices on some things than Target or Walmart, ie Persil laundry detergent, I've gotten it on sale at Safeway several times and w/a coupon for $7.99 or even $6.99, it's $11.99 at Walmart. Sometimes the prices of the Just For U program don't get applied to the purchase (you just use your Safeway Club Card for those deals and coupons to be applied to your purchase) and I can have some frustration trying to get them to credit the difference. The customer service can be difficult to find at times at the counter, but I've never seen them standing around or goofing around, they are always engaged in their duties. The employees are usually very pleasant and helpful. I've shopped at all the grocery stores in the area, none of them are as helpful or nice or have such a great coupon and reward program. I do have to go shopping at other stores for things Safeway doesn't have, and their service is never as good as this Safeway, and it makes me appreciate this Safeway even more. read more

STAY AWAY .... at least until construction is done. I used to enjoy coming to this store (2-3x a week) but today was my first trip since the construction/remodeling has started and I won't be back until they finish it. Thank goodness a Giant is nearby. Why won't I be back? 1) There is construction debris/material aroudn both entrances - you can't tell which one was open. 2) I went to the left entrance and found it blocked by the soft drink delivery team (there were several employees unloading soft drinks in teh vestibule. Both doors in to the store were blocked and I had to wait until the exit door was cleared so I could enter. 3) BE PREPARED TO WALK - all of the construction workers have taken the parking spaces closest to the store - customers have to park at the middle to end of the parking rows. 4) Construction workers are smoking at the entrances and you have to walk through their smoke to enter/leave the building. This morning at 8am the manager of the store was outside on his cell phone rigth near the entrance totally oblivious to their smoking 5) Can't find anything in the rows being renovated and event thought there are plenty of workers and store employees around, not one asked if they could help be find something in all the confusion. 6) Other shelves have little stock on them - I guess why provide the groceries on the shelves for customers if that means that the workers have more to move later. I left without the one thing that I came in to get .... thank goodness there is a Giant nearby .... that will now be the store of choice. They remodeled several years ago and it was no where the mess that it is at this Safeway. read more

This is my favorite store in the area, Mr. Bill is extremely nice. He knows my son has autism and knew the first time he met him. He's always very nice to my family and we enjoy speaking to him. I'm also a couponer, this store is coupon friendly and I've never had an issue in the store or with any employees. read more

I went in this Safeway to pick up two items at 10 p.m. The store was dirty. The floors looked liked they had not been cleaned in a while. After getting my items, I went to self check out. There is a big whole in the plastic on the keypad (I bet a lot of germs are lurking there) and of course it was dirty too. To add insult, the cashier was rude, and it was like pulling teeth trying to get the employees to stay six feet from me or to keep their mask on. Because of the rudeness and being overcharged, I told the cashier that I wanted a refund. "We don't do refunds." I can understand not doing a refund after the customer leaves the store, but I never left. I was told, by the manager, that I would have to come back in the morning or call to get my money back for the overcharge. Such poor customer service. I will not be coming back to this Safeway. Oh, even the parking lot is unkept. read more

Now I don't expect a chain grocery store to have five star service but I do expect to be treated with some type of respect. I've been shopping here literally since it opened( pretty close to me), a good amount of employees know who I am. I always had pretty decent service until recently. I was getting some gas at their station located pretty much right next to the store, I walked inside and greeted the two employees in the small stand, none of them said anything back, I let that go. The woman employee (who was not wearing a name tag btw) randomly, out of no here! said something very offensive and horrific targeted towards a certain group of people. I quote, she said "they should be taken to a field and burned" whaaaaaat???!?!?! First of all, why are you talking about issues like that in front of customers, your pretty much asking someone to retaliate again what you say, second, why aren't you doing something work related? your just standing there as if your opinion on something really matters, do your job. Usually I do not respond to ignorant comments but what she said was so morbid I had to respond, but politely. In return she responds "so why are you opening your mouth?" and then accused me of being a part of that specific group she was targeting! excuse me!!! your going to talk like that to a customer! I can have you fired in 30 minutes!!( I really wanted to but I was late for class so I had to leave). I could tell that this woman had no class so I just walked away from the situation. At least I got my gas. read more

This store has some of the worst customer support I have ever experienced and I really don't expect much from a chain grocery store. The self-check out is glitchy and I was getting frustrated. The female clerk made a point to speak to the manager and point out that I was getting frustrated. He then came over and made it worse by trying to explain that when i move bags around on the counter area this movement causes the system to be sensitive. He then got defensive when I, the frustrated customer, said, I understood what was happening but nevertheless it was frustrating and having more checkout lanes with employees would be helpful. He then proceeded to further be defensive and argue with me. I continued to explain that I didn't ask for his help and I just wanted to get through the checkout process. I will never return to this store read more

Beware of expired items on shelves! Check everything. I have found expired boxes of macaroni and cheese, condensed milk, sliced cheese, refrigerated pasta, the list goes on... And these items are being sold at full price. Also, advertised sale items are usually out of stock: tilapia, frozen okra, yogurt. The lines are long and the cashiers have trouble with ringing up produce. I was charged the $6.99/lb price for habanero peppers when the item was a pasilla/poblano pepper for $1.99/lb. I told the cashier what the item was and her reply was "well it's not on my list, so..." I paid the higher price just to get out of the store faster. There are always carts full of boxes and junk for stocking in the aisles. On the positive side, the employees in the meat department are always helpful and will ask if you need help finding anything. If you do, they will walk you to the item and make sure you find it. read more
