This location has been around for decades and located in the same plaza my family's jewelry store is (owned by aunt and uncle & previously grandparents). I've been sporadically through the years, but Safeway isn't my preferred grocer as I don't feel like their food/products merits the price point. I shop here all the time because I like the selection, and my husband likes the produce. Well, the last time we went here on "senior day" - the first Wednesday of the month, while checking out I told the cashier that we were seniors and wanted our 10% discount. It adds up, especially if you spend over $100 like we often do. She stated "oh, it comes off automatically" and I believed her. When we got home and looked at the receipt, I did not see the 10% discount. So I called the store and the manager told me to bring the receipt and they would reimburse me the money. I asked the lady that was helping me if the senior discount comes off automatically, and she said "no", the cashier has to enter it that way. Interesting. So if you're a senior, make sure you check your receipts, especially if you have a lazy cashier or a cashier that doesn't care. read more

I visited this Safeway for a quick stop. The store itself is well lit and free of clutter/litter. There were employees throughout the store which I find nice/convenient because sometimes stores can feel like a ghost town when you are trying to locate someone for assistance. The parking lot has ample parking and the spots are nice and wide to allow for easy access/ability to open your doors freely. I browsed the produce section where everything looked fresh and was beautifully stocked. I stopped by the meat section which also had the same impression. I did stop at the deli for a few items and Donovan (I think the spelling was different but this was his name) was so kind and helpful. Sometimes the deli can be a frustrating experience as the line is huge or the employee is not pleasant. There was 2 people in line before me and when it was my turn, he was happy to help me as if I was the first customer of the day. On the way out, you can utilize typical cashier or they have self checkout which is a nice option if you only have a few items. I mainly was wanting to purchase a case of water as they were in the ad for $2.77 each. I was having trouble locating them so I inquired with an employee. She kindly told me the aisle they were located in and gave me the back up location. Unfortunately there were none to be located as it appears they were sold out. I do believe they offer a "rain check" however there was a line of 8 people at the courtesy counter when I approached so I just went back and got a different option. If you are interested in an 8 piece fried chicken from the deli - save your money (or go to Fry's). Purchased today and it tasted like it was cooked 3 days ago and left in oven to keep warm for 3 days. It couldn't have been drier chicken if they tried. Please review photos. This store is in a great location. However, the store shows are continuously underfilled because of a lack of staffing. It would be nice to see the management on the floor helping their team a little bit more. This includes not just the department head. But the store manager and assistant store manager. Disappointed in the bakery, on Tuesday I order online few days ahead for Saturday my daughter birthday went over and thought it would be ready at 11 am they said there was no order under my name but when I gave them the order number they look like they didn't want to do and tried telling us maybe you have the wrong store. The parking lot of this Safeway is absolutely horrendous! Entered at one end and just trying to drive through to find a place to park was a nightmare. People driving through speeding and driving right through the middle of the lot. People backing up and not paying attention! Customers walking right in the middle of the lanes and not moving....or they walk right behind your car as you are trying to back out. The parking lot was so horrible that there was a motorcycle crash with a car on our way out and the fire department/police were called to the scene. I have been purchasing groceries and getting prescriptions filled for about a year because it is really close to my house. The pharmacy staff is great but often overwhelmed with the number of people waiting to pick up and only 1 person handling it. . They are always out of the handicap carts, people are using them I am told. Well maybe you should get some more. There are a lot of older people in this area. The groceries are more expensive than Frys and doesn't have the variety of brands that Frys does. They also do not offer personalized coupons like Frys does, when I need a large order of groceries I do go to Frys because I save a lot more money than at Safeway. My biggest complaint is the fresh fruit. I am single and usually buy the precut bowls that are 3 for $12 and get pineapple, watermelon and cantaloupe. over the past few months the quality of the fruit is horrible. I have spoke to several managers who say they will address it but I still find core in the pineapple and the brown spots that are on the outside of it. The watermelon is all soggy like its old and has the the rind still on pieces. the the cantaloupe is also all soft like its old. I won't be buying that fruit any longer, guess I have to go to Frys for that now too. read more

I had to go into their store (3185 W. Apache Trail in AJ, AZ) I usually order online, but tonight was a bit of an emergency. The door states you must wear masks. It is not enforced. Social distancing is not enforced either. Their not wearing masks puts me and the others at risk. A business would not allow you to come in without shirt and shoes... Good luck management. This store has gone down hill in Customer service and has a horrible produce section. Rotten tomatoes, corn dried up and bad bananas. Also alot of flies. The only good thing is the deli and bakery. I'm going to update this as time progresses, because I'm going to take the manager's word for it & give it another try. Prior to this review, I have been shopping here for the past year. It's the closest & my preference- they carry just about everything I need & prefer in the kitchen! But, this location suffers some serious issues. And I was more than impressed when Lynette, the manager personally called me this afternoon after reading my recent feedback after my recent visit(s). I would have entirely given it 1 star & bagged this store for good had she not attempted to listen & help rectify the major issues at hand. I think they have an outstanding selection in every department. I've almost always been helped & never had an issue with most of any visit. But recently, I was turned away from the meat department at 6pm on a Friday with the guy telling me to come back tomorrow- they wouldn't process anymore ground beef in 1lb packages. Only thing on the shelf was bulk. I was frustrated I had to go elsewhere. And the next visit, I had to stand in line for 30+ minutes to checkout on one of the 2 isles open at 5pm on a Saturday. It took longer to checkout than it did to shop! Try customer service? Good luck- never anyone there. And when they are present, it is extremely slow. I can't help but notice there is usually an employee "hanging out" but not working, chattering to the one on duty, but won't step in & help the next customer in a line of 5+. So the nail that sealed the coffin was when I exited with 5+ heavy bags in my shopping cart on Friday, and the wheels locked up at the door. Could not get the cart to my vehicle. It's an "anti-theft" measure, but I could not get an employee to help. I was basically left stranded & struggling. You can't leave your items there trekking back & forth or the homeless that congregates out front will theft it the minute you turn your back. I was left with no option but to write a strong review & opt not to go back. Lynette (the manager) called me this afternoon to address EVERY issue. She was kind, considerate and took the time to hear my frustrations & concerns. Honestly- it left me feeling valued & like they really do care & want to try for better! With her saying, "please come introduce yourself if you would feel inclined to come back & give us another chance, I'd like to meet you & show you that we care and your concerns are heard." She explained reasoning for the cart issue, and what can/should be done so that doesn't occur. I wasn't aware, and it helped to understand from BOTH aspects. I know it is hard to find & keep good employees. And honestly, I think most everyone here does an excellent job- they just need a boost in morale & the ability to serve outside of their specified department, because that is the one thing I notice most of the frustration comes from- some are standing around with not enough to do while others are entirely swamped & can't manage the random rush that occurs every so often. So that is my constructive criticism: let your employees be a "jack of all trades" & hop in to help in other departments if the rush & demand warrants it! Your customers would be flattered for the increase in service & it may alleviate some of the repetitive frustrations & issues that keep being encountered. I really enjoy shopping here for the most part- they have excellent selection with some of the best pric. The store is clean & organized, fresh selection & nothing major lacking aside from the customer service & legitimate help/care. So I truly appreciate the phone call of concern & since management has vowed to listen & improve where possible for their patrons- I will take the time to visit again & give it another go. And will update accordingly as time progresses! Update: Never again. The manager is two-faced and entirely disregards her customers. She can manage to walk around up front, but can't manage to open new checkout lines when the 3 open are 8+ deep. The stock was pretty much empty on every isle recently. And you cannot get help from customer service at all. 1 person manning with another LONG line... after standing there for 30+ minutes & the same person STILL at the counter- I gave up. Literally flagged an employee down to ask for help but they also disregarded it & walked off to wander around. It's sad & inexcusable at this point. I will not be back. I had gone around to multiple stores throughout the East Valley in Apache Junction trying to get a wedding cake ordered for my wedding... I was not aware I was supposed to give six weeks notice three weeks at the shortest LOL. I called down and spoke with Karen in the bakery and asked her to please not tell me that she needs three weeks notice to do a wedding cake... she told me to come in and talk to her and see what we can figure out. After that all I can say is she went above and beyond to take away a lot of stress on me to get this cake done!!! Not only did she get it done but she had to make some corrections on it based on my husband thinking he knew what he wanted LOL and as you can see in the pictures below it was absolutely perfect! Soooooo I am a sale shopper and enjoy savings on my groceries.. This particular Safeway has management that does not care about the customer. Their cashiers complain that they are tired and none of their "just for you" add items come off when you check out. I was just shorted another $5!! So annoying. The woman at the service desk looks like she's been sucking on lemons in the produce department and their carts constantly LOCK UP at the front door forcing you to run into them causing painfil shin injury and bruising and annoyance because now you are being treated like you stole something by them locking up your cart with your fully purchased groceries inside. Been shopping here for years even after they built a Walmart a few blocks away. No more. I was in line at the "courtesy" counter for 5 mins waiting for a clerk to show up. Meanwhile the manager old dude is chatting up some female in the flower section. I decide to go to the first register because there was no one in line. I needed to turn a roll of pennies and 5 dimes into a dollar for a machine. The clerk looked at the roll of pennies like it was a snake and said we don't take those. We go back and forth. She calls manager. He walks over from the flower dept. I tell him I need A dollar bill. He points at the coinstar machine. I tell him thats ridiculous. Then I walk over to courtesy counter and he tells me they won't take them either. I call him an a-hole. He asks me to leave the store. I go by pharmacy to get prescription for friend. He calls them and tells them not to buy my roll of pennies. Technically it's an exchange.. I leave and he is outside talking with the guy who hit me up for spare change in the parking lot. If they would spend as much time keeping the hobos and tweekers off the benches in front of the store as they do policing the penny rolls the store might actually turn a profit. Let's first start off by saying sometimes the employees don't take care of the customer. I was in there a couple weeks ago, where if you spend $25 you could get Dasani water 4 for $10, my grocery bill was $24.65 but, they don't include Milk to count in this, doesn't state that on ad at all. Anyways, the cashier refused to give me the Dasani at 4 for $10, so I kept receipt and ad, went in a week later and spoke to Val, store manager advised him what happened, he didn't even flinch, he said let me go get your water and I will give it to you at that price. They need more help in the deli. I stood at the counter waiting for someone to come out from behind walled area...All I could hear was people talking and big pots bumping and more bumping. I called out for assistance to purchase a salad in the display case but I guess no one could "hear me". After a resonable time waiting I left. Aren't they trained to maybe "check" to see if a customer has stopped by that might need something? Apparently not. Two days ago I again needed to buy something from the deli case. The sole worker was right there in front of me working on some project in the deli. I asked her for help and she said she couldn't stop what she was doing because she was in the middle of something she was doing. Imagine that, they're actually too busy (and too short-handed) to serve an item from the deli so a customer can purchase. At the end of the day does she get paid because she was busy or because sales at the registers continue at a regular pace? Someone in management at this store needs some basic training in economics. I first moved here off Meridian Road and Apache Trail on 2016 as a winter home even though I lived winters in S. Az. I sold home Benson AZ - Near Safeway -which was known for being understaffed and long lines. I've visited many stores and Walmart is the worst for long lines. They are also more expensive for Groceries Overall Than Safeway. Safeway on Meridian and Apache Trail has outstanding staff people and a excellent Deli. If you like fresh French Bread and tell the Bakery you'll be in @ 6AM It Will Be Waiting. The checkout people are outstanding, one that comes to mind is, Amber who likes Payday Candy Bars . Amber after I confused her failed two times to not give me my ATM grocery checkout cash back. After I called and admitted Our Errors the manager put a hold on her drawer and counted it down and found my cash staying in constant contact with me by phone. It rests squarely on my shoulders as I confused her by bagging my own groceries and asking for a double on grannies monopoly tickets.
