They certainly don't promote a community of kindness! I was given a bunch of cats to take to SafeHaven because the owner died. Steph and the manager Chris (Christine), were horribly awful to me accused me of stealing cats. I had to send a picture of the dead person (literally) to PROVE she was dead. They didn't take my word for it- then they called the cops on me because Steph got her feelings hurt. I've donated and volunteered my services at SafeHaven for years! WTF Both of them need to be fired! They wouldnt give me the boards info because they knew they messed up. Awful place. Warehouse. Animals in animals out. They try to squeeze as much money out of you as they can. It's pretty bad ya'll. If you have another option TAKE IT. read more

I live in Eugene, but came to SafeHaven to look for an adult cat. I looked at the cats online to get a list to check out for a good fit. Everyone there was super friendly from the front desk to the cat rooms. I've had 6 cats over my life from shelters and the way this place is set up makes the adoption process easy. They allow access to a lot of the cats in a play room, so you can interact with them and see if the cat a good fit. I was so impressed with this place. You could say it's the cat's meow...LOL. I also want to give a shoutout to the young lady helping me in the cat room. I forgot her name, but she is young and has red hair. She was a delight and also knowledgeable. This is the kind of employee all Humane Societies need. A very pleasant young woman. I'm already in love with Dorothy, who now answers to Kiki. We've known others who've adopted a few dogs from here, and they had great experiences with the whole shebang. We ourselves have adopted two cats here and are impressed with the operation and follow up. The money it costs you to adopt here is a bargain when you consider the spay/ neuter and vaccination costs of a new companion. Also, the fees make it so that Safe Haven can continue to be a no kill shelter, where our animal friends are TRULY safe and well cared for. The staff is professional, compassionate, and responsive. Tia --- AKA Mrs. Dobs I (Patricia) have always had a dog. Usually a mutt, a rescue or a four foot with such sad eyes I ended up adopting him/her anyway. However, I have never had a dog like Tia. To begin with, she chose us. She made it perfectly clear that she was going home with us. I had some reservations. I thought I should get a older dog. Tia is an active seven., { I have never had a purebred. I had always had mutts but Tia looks as though she came from the pages of the American Kennel club. } So reluctantly Jim and I put her back in her wire kennel and started to walk away. She cried! She didn't bark or howl, but cried dog style. When we turned back she got excited jumping four feet in the air, showering us with dog kisses. We folded! she was ours, this beautiful little purebred Mini Phi. (Doberman Pin) According the kennel club this breed is unrelated to the larger breed. They weigh under 25 pounds, are highly athletic and extremely intelligent, bonding quickly to their human family The Safe Haven told us she was a surrender from California, She had been well taken care off, all shots, neutered, dental and training. Jim and I think her last human companion, a single man, in an apartment, passed away or could not longer care for her. We believe she chose us because we smelled right and reminded her of her past life. We totally love this little dog. She has us under control and is busy teaching us what we need to know about her. When Tia needs "outside" she sits presenting her harness ring within clear easy reach. She loves to walk, does great on a leash and is totally house broken. (She has also made it clear that she sleeps with us, on the bed in the center puppy spot. Dog beds are OK during the day, but she tells us when it is time for the pack to retire to our bed and leads the way, She learns very quickly a new desired behavior. We are still working on wild turkeys and deer. You don't bark or chase them. A better 'fit' for us, could NOT be... Thank you Safe Haven!!!!!!! read more

I have been looking for a company for my dog for months he is more of a dominate dog so it was difficult to find other that would work with him. I have had dogs all my life and they are almost always happier with a play mate. Skeeter, my two year old terroir mix was raised with two other dogs that recently moved to far away for him to see on a regular basis. I am in school and I thought it would be nice for him to have a friend well I am away. Safe Haven helped me find the perfect friend for Skeeter and now they spend most everyday playing and cuddling with each other. Cleanliness- Safe haven keeps the kennels and yards really clean. The animals are kept in a clean area with a clean supply of water. They get to go play outside in a yard that is cleaned up after every use. They spend a lot of time cleaning up after the animals to ensure their health. Knowledge of Animals- Before you adopt an animal you can meet with the people who have been taking care of the animal before you adopt them. They go through their file with you and make sure that there isn't anything that could harm the animal or any animal at your home. Meet and Greets- They also offer meet and greets with you and the pet of the same species. They can't do dog-cat meet and greets for the safety of both animals. The meet and greets for dogs involve two staff holding the leash of both dogs giving them time to get used to each other and you time to interact with both dogs. Animal care- The dogs get to go on daily walks and play with other dogs. They are well feed, always have access to water and get to go to the vet. They take extraordinary care of the animals and they are happy when they are there. Price- Do to the rescue me program there, the adoption fees are a pretty penny. Both my dogs came from the program at about 8 weeks and were both $300 dollars to adopt. It is a great program but it costs a lot to adopt from it. If you are looking for a more affordable adoption fee I wouldn't recommend here there are other places in the Willamette Valley that you can adopt a senior dog for $60 or a pure breed for $200. read more

I love this place! they truly care about every animal that passes through their doors. They also have invested, and are continuing to invest, a lot of money into a remodel that will maximize the amount of animals they can help. Sounds like I work for them, right Wrong! I work for another shelter and visited here for a shelter tour, because I wanted to take notes and take some of their Pros to my shelter when looking into redesign. I love their new cat kennels, which has a air circ system that allows for the smells to be removed from the cat areas. They have a lot of areas for the dogs to play, and their design is pretty optimal for herd health and also for public viewing. Are they perfect? no. they cant reasonably accomodate for all of the animals that come through their doors, so they do have to turn some away, but they truly do care for every single one they see and they do all they can. they also have a REALLY reasonably priced store for all of the cat and dog adopter needs! Prices are reasonable and they have a lovely facility! read more

We adopted our dog Faith here last year around November. She was the perfect dog for us and she was such a sweet heart. Not a mean bone in her body. She was very shy around men and always ran away from me at night when I came home from work. But she was slowly getting better about that. Unfortunately she died recently due to unknown reasons. However Safehaven was awesome when we adopted her and everything having to do with her. It saddens me to hear that others did not have a similar experience. We are now keeping an eye out for new dogs on their site to fill the hole in our hearts and to eat the treats we have! read more

We adopted our dog from Safehaven just over a year ago. He was the sweetest boy when we met him, only wanting belly rubs, no interest in toys. The staff let us know that if we adopted him and things didn't work out, they don't give refunds, but will put the adoption fee towards finding a dog that is the right fit. We were pleased that we found the perfect fit the first time. We took our dog through obedience training at Petco, and he did wonderfully. Friends can't believe how calm and well behaved he is, and as much as we'd like to take credit, he just came that way. We are so pleased with Safehaven helping us find the perfect companion, and can't imagine our life without his furry butt. read more

We just adopted a puppy from Safehaven about two months ago and have been thoroughly impressed with the before, during, and after process. It is very clean. The staff is very helpful and willing to spend time answering questions. There is a program in place to help with socialization and training after adoption for puppies. Safehaven seems to be only out to get your money. They dont care about whether it will be a good fit for you or the animal and are extremely unsupportive if things go wrong. I was a first time dog owner and when I was making my decision about adopting a dog, I was extremely candid about my living situation, lack of experience with dogs, and the type of dog I was looking for. I met a dog who was labeled as a puppy. He was super calm and responsive and didnt bark at all or show any "classic puppy behaviors." He had his adult teeth and multiple staff told me they thought the reason for his calm behavior was that he was probably older than the age his information said (closer to a year than 5 months). I asked if they thought this dog would be a good fit for me given all my criteria and was told yes and encouraged to adopt. That night, he was up all night destroying things, proving he wasn't potty trained and running for hours all over my apartment, wanting to play. I told myself he was just settling in and would calm down again like he was at the shelter. He didnt. The next morning we went to the dog park for 45 minutes, and played in the yard for another 2 hours and he still had too much energy. He showed he had extreme separation anxiety and would freak out if I even tried to take a shower. Going to work that night seemed impossible. This all added up to be extremely overwhelming for me as this was not the calm, well mannered dog I thought I had adopted. My mom, not the staff, suggested that the medication from his surgery less than 24 hours before I had adopted him had probably worn off and it wasn't a misinterpretation of his age, but the sedation meds leaving his system causing the extreme change in behavior. That afternoon, I made the tough decision to bring him back to safe haven. I knew it just wasnt a good fit and he needed a family who could take turns caring for him and help him get out all that energy, something I couldnt do by myself. So, I took him back to the shelter, crying the whole way. I was devestated and unsure about how things had gone so wrong when I was so honest about what kind of dog I was looking for and went in with the very best intentions and planned to provide a forever home for a dog. I had hoped that the staff would be supportive of the situation but instead, the supervisior said many hurtful things things like, "a dog isnt just a pair of shoes you can try on and then take back" and "we only give refunds when theres a problem with the dog, and it sounds like its a problem with the owner." I inquired about a voucher instead of a money refund to adopt a different animal at a future date that would be a better fit for me and the animal and was told that wasnt possible. I feel pretty swindled and like their adoption practice is unethical due to them selling me a dog that was recovering from surgery and sedation meds less than 24 hours prior. Multiple staff repeated that they were currently over populated and struggling to keep up with the new intakes. It seemed like they were focusing on just getting rid of as many animals as fast as possible for the money rather than making sure that theyre going to the best homes for both dog and owner. I won't be adopting here again and, after this heartbreaking experience, I dont know if I'll ever be able to adopt a dog again, or adopt at all. I paid for a service and instead got poor information and drugged dog with multiple issues. Really, really disappointed. read more

I had to return a puppy after 5 days due to severe potty-training related trauma. They say they will help you find the right dog for you--they did not help at all and said I was either on my own, or I could give him back. It was one of the hardest things I've ever had to do, and I am disabled--I was on the search for a service dog and they didn't care at all. They spend all their money on their training facility so it will look snazzy, not taking care of the dogs. When we returned the dog, the woman taking our forms said "we have another shipment of dogs coming in on Friday, you'd could use that gift certificate and get another one." I'm sorry, that sounds like puppy mill talk. I now have a healthy dog who is doing well (I had to get one from a breeder because these people wouldn't help me) and is training as my service dog. His trainer said she was NOT surprised at the way Safehaven behaved, so it's not just me. I've also seen posts on Craigslist denouncing them. I would have gone to Heartland, but they only have so many dogs at a time, and I needed a young healthy one to train as opposed to a senior dog to just be my companion because the dog is for helping me, not the other way around.
