I needed to repair the finish on the leather cases of two slide rules from the last century. So I brought in the cases to color match the dyes, find some saddle soap to clean them, and some shoe wax to refinish. They had it all. I was happy and it took only 15 minutes to find it all, pay for it, and go on my merry way. This is an awesome place for those who want to shine up their shoes or make a pair of shoes. If you are into shoes this is heaven! I literally came here for laces and spent an hour browsing. I think this is where most of the shoe repair stores get their supplies. I'll see everything that I find at my local shoe repair for less. In fact I actually ran into my luggage repairman here buying supplies! They have everything from different leathers to belt buckles to dyes and brushes and everything you could possibly imagine for your shoes. Have you lost the pin for your belt? They'll have one. Do you need a extra grommet for your sneakers? They'll probably have that too. You can find insoles, soles to put over the bottom of your sneakers to protect them, red laquer for soles (instant Louboutin), you name it. I'm not big on shoe repair myself (I'll take them to a shoe repair store) but it's nice to be able to find the right color to shine your shoe or that perfect pair of laces. When a shoe repair store said they couldn't repair the sole on my favorite Golden Goose sneakers, I went here and bought some special glue and it worked. Also great if you've broken a favorite belt and you want to try to fix or customize it. The staff is super helpful too. There's free parking just in front. My only complaint is it can be a bit confusing when you're inside to find specific things but they will help you out if you ask. read more

Let me start off by saying that based upon other reviews, I was afraid to shop here. I am taking a Footwear Design & Construction class, so I don't yet have a great knowledge of shoe supplies. I visited Saderma on Sunday at about 11am. They were a little busy, but not crazy busy. The employees could not have been nicer. Mario saw me wandering and asked if he could help me. He answered questions I had about a few different products and then just gave me helpful tips. Tony helped me out with leather and tracked down some Birkenstock buckles that I needed. Awesome selection and they had everything I wanted, but two major gripes: -their hours suck big time -they don't have prices anywhere, and I'm about 80% sure the guy just made up prices he felt like on the spot I mean, I got what I came for which I couldn't anywhere else, but it's rather inconvenient as far as hours and I really find it hard to believe they're not ripping me off when they don't post any prices. I called today to see what their hours of operation are. I initially spoke to a rather nice lady. As I had additional questions she referred me to a salesman. What I'm about to say is my personal opinion based on our conversation. My question to the gentleman was: what are the basic tools needed for shoe repair/making as I would like to take the two up as a hobby. Without thought his response to me was "I have no idea, you would need to talk to a professional". Silly me, I thought I was. Believe it or not the first thought that came to my mind was, I see why Amazon is so successful. Their priority is customer service. The "salesman" I spoke with aside from being arrogant and appearing to have no concept of phone etiquette let alone customer service made it his point to demonstrate that I was of no concern or value to him as a potential patron. My goals were simple. I wanted to purchase the supplies I needed, possibly establish a long term relationship and support a local business. Let it be noted that anything he has for sale I could purchase online from the same source he does at a cheaper cost. My humble conclusion is that either he is so successful that he need not focus on such trivial pursuits as customer service or he's conducting an experiment to see how fast it can ultimately take him to go out of business. Please be advised that I'm not attempting to discourage anyone from patronizing this establishment because at the end of the day everyone's experience will be different. My hope is that if the"salesman" ever takes the time to read this he will become aware of the fact that he has inspired me to get into the shoe maker/repair supply business. Thank you kindly sir! I 'd have to agree with Robert. This place is fantastic,. They have all the shoe supplies for repairing, cleaning or making shoes. Don't look for customer service because there is none however if you ask them a question they will help you although not eagerly but they aren't rude; it's more of a low key New York kind of attitude. Here's the deal with this place: lots and lots of specialized cool shoe/leather stuff, zero customer service. I guess we are supposed to be glad Saderma isn't wholesale only. This place is basically a supply store for shoemakers or other leather craftsmen. They have lots of leather, findings, soles, polishes, dyes, laces, heels, and anything else you can think of. No prices on anything, and no signage. You will feel like an idiot if you ask a question, though you will probably get an answer. I've never asked anything that took more than thirty seconds to ask, and that is probably all you're going to get. I can understand why they are this way, I guess. They don't want some idiot asking them how you re-sole a pair of shoes. Read your how-to info somewhere, and go to this place to get what you need. They have a large selection of leather dyes and shoe polishes. Where else do you go to buy suede dye in lilac? (The Internet I guess). The prices aren't bad, but they're not wholesale either. This place is fantastic if your looking for supplies required to repair, clean or make shoes. This is basically wholesale only, but they allow the public to buy as well. What I'm saying is when you go in to the store, use basic common sense. That means they aren't going to fawn over you like in Nordstroms, however they will give you limited customer service. I'm a gal who loves shoes and has plenty. Of course, shoes need some attention now and then and if you're a hands-on person as I am, then Saderma is a nice place to pickup all manner of maintenance and care items for your shoes, boots, handbags and other leather goods, etc. I recently pulled into the parking lot that is shared with a furniture store I believe. There were no spots available but a gentlemen that was outside kindly motioned me to park my classic ole Mercedes right up by the front door. Wow, talk about service. I dashed in and politely waited my turn to be helped. I asked the counter clerk where the cork sealer was but another guy spoke up and said that he would help me. I had called earlier to see if they had the stuff before I made the trip, and he had it behind the counter ready for me. My Birkenstocks look so much fresher and renewed now. It's as if they got a facelift - ha! They were courteous and polite. I'm certainly not a cobbler but I appreciate that the business is open to the general walk-in public. Thank you! Wow, I don't know who was helping some of the other people who reviewed this place, but I can't believe how different my experience was! I tagged along with a neighbor who does leatherwork and now I want to start too! The guy who helped us (well, my neighbor, really) was UNBELIEVABLY patient, since she (neighbor) not only changed her mind about a million times on a few things, she also asked about a million and a half questions. The guy even took the time to answer my questions too. As noted in previous reviews, the emphasis here is on shoes, but I noticed upholstery tools in one of their display cases, and they have supplies to make/repair handbags as well. Additionally, where Tandy in NoHo requires that you buy full hides if you want larger pieces of leather to work with, Saderma lets you buy partial hides. Their leather straps come in a variety of widths, and the prices are reasonable, and they have an massive selection of leather dyes - a wide variety of colors, and a number of different brands. I'm seriously scratching my head trying to think of what I can make with some of the cool stuff they have there. read more

For decades, my late father went to there to purchase all of his shoe care products. I am following in my father's footsteps as I learn how to take care of my shoes. The employees are quite helpful at showing you what you need, be it for polishing your shoes, stretching somewhat tight shoes, et cetera. They really know their stuff! Never interrupt any of the employees while they are helping another customer! Interrupting really is rude, and they will let you know it! A lot of the customers are experts at shoe care and shoe repair. You can learn a lot by chatting with their customers since people tend to love sharing their knowledge with others. The variety of products is amazing. First time customers should plan on spending a half hour or more looking at the huge variety of products which they regularly stock throughout their very large store. It is good to learn where everything is, and to read product labels for appropriate uses. For example, did you know that there is acrylic paint for leather? I didn't. They also have leather in a variety of textures, thicknesses, colors, and finishes. You can cut your own leather. You use your feet to walk this earth. How well you take care of your shoes says a lot about your character. read more

As I am sick of cobblers ruining my vintage shoes, I decided to do-it-myself. If you are crafty, then this is the place to go whether repairing a shoe or making a leather hand bag. They carry many things from leather dye, cutting tools, rubber/leather soles, heels, leather to shoe insoles. It is almost impossible to list everything so it is best to come in and look. You might find what you're looking for. I have always wanted to glue dancers rubber for the out sole for all my vintage shoes so that they remain in good condition when walking. Well, I found it here. They also have items ranging in many prices of same type even with ones made in France (the name gives it away-pricier) and affordable ones that appear to be a great quality too. I have to say customer service is very good. Mario and Tony were wonderful. They made sure I find what I needed and make you feel at home while being there. I have been shopping here for about 5 years, coming about twice a year. They are very overpriced and don't have signs anywhere on how much things cost nor anyone to help you, so they just tell you whatever price probably based on how you look once you get to the counter to pay. One time I paid $9/yd for some trim and the next time I came back, they sold me the same trim for $1.50/us. Lately, the woman who stays behind the counter has been an especially heinous, discriminatory b*tch and has made unwarranted, accusatory claims towards me when I purchase even though I have never done or said anything to deserve such ugly treatment. Unfortunately, I haven't found another place that carries what I need, but I need to start looking harder for a new place because this place no longer deserves my business. read more

Saderma has almost anything needed for leather work, shoe repair and dozens of other related trades. The staff warmed up to me after repeated purchases over several months. They attract and cater to serious customers. They are not very interested in the retail customers who enter looking for one can of shoe polish or a pair of shoe laces and have myriad questions about which ones are the best. Some of the sales persons will help you find what you're looking for but eventually they expect you to know about what products you are buying and where to find them in their store. read more

Great selection of scrap leather and the gentleman that works back in the leather department was oh so helpful, at least he was after the horde of fashion and design students slowly made their way out. Wow watching all those students swarm the place and start rumaging through things I am suprised he remained calm. You'll want to read the other reviews of Saderma. It's a wacky, unusual place with all the treasurous things you need for all your leather craft/cobbler/artsy needs. Like, really a find. However, customer service is not their forte. It doesn't have to be because they have all the stuff no one else does. BUT you can have both a great shopping adventure and a great human-human interaction adventure if you go in with this attitude: 1 I need stuff they have at Saderma 2 I am going to find Alan and introduce myself and treat him with respect and dignity deserving of his vast knowledge and his many, many years dealing with people who come in to ask questions and expect him to tell them how to build rocket boots or rockstar pants or whatever, then purchase $1.89 worth of supplies before they head off to Tandy. 3 With items 1 and 2 in mind, I am going to enjoy the "New York in LA" experience here and rejoice at not having to fly east to find the curiosities I need and the brusque-bordering-on-rude salesclerk help I find charming in Manhattan, on television, in plays, and other throwback representations of The Way It Was. 4 I am shopping at Saderma to do my part in preserving the rapidly-vanishing independent shop with big personalities running them that have been part and parcel of the American Experience. I am going to remind myself, as I step over the threshold of Saderma, that Walmart has neither the products, quirky charm, nor chance to tame a bristly shopkeeper that Saderma offers. There you go. They have amazing stuff, but they really lack in customer service. I went to buy some copper rivets. I really needed 2 rivets, but I know you can't just buy 2 copper rivets. However, they are a whole-saler, so I had to buy $35 with of copper rivets! I also needed the rivet setter which was very reasonably priced. When I got home, the rivet setter was NOT right. It was smashing the washer and NOT the actual rivet like it's supposed to. I went back, explained the situation and asked for either some tips to explain why I'm having prob. They said the rivet setter WAS the right setter and I was just doing it wrong. I asked how to do it and they offered no advice and only said, "other people have never had problems." I went home and did some googling. Turns out the rivet setter was too deep. I had to spend an hour filing it down to the right size. If you know what you want, walk in get it and get out. If you want help with anything, get the help from somewhere else. I went in there strictly so that I could support local businesses. Turns out I ended up wasting a trip, an hour of my life, and $35 worth of rivets. I regret not making this purchase online. It would've taken 10 minutes, cost a lot less and not wasted time. read more

I haven't been yet, but I called to inquire about leather and I spoke to the leather department specialist "Allen". When he asked what I needed it for exactly, I said I was making welders aprons, at which point I had to wait for him to finish laughing for a good 3 minutes for WHATEVER reason...VERY unprofessional. He then launched into a full, well you might want to go with this , then you won't have to seam it etc etc.. All I did was call to get some information..not be cut off while I'm talking by some snotty laughing customer service person... This is a wholesale store - a REAL wholesale store where the customer is supposed to know what they want, what it looks like and how much it should cost. If you are looking to be coddled and comforted in your lack of experience go elsewhere to purchase your supplies! Oh, btw, there is no other place to shop with this abundant inventory that Saderma has to offer. Do not malign Alan who is an expert on leather or any of the other staff. If you are not capable of articulating your needs in a clear and coherent manner appropriate to the trade then ask with respect and patience and you will be shown the same courtesy. Another suggestion is to avoid peak hours on Sunday morning and early any day of the week as the professional cobblers shop on those days. They seem to have all kinds of shoe making supplies. I came here looking for boot lasts, asked guy A and he told me he doesn't know if they have boot lasts, told me to look through the pile myself. So I did. Found a pair of lasts but not boot lasts, went to the front to ask guy B if it's men or women last, he said he doesn't know. What the fuck? They can't even answer a simple question like that?Also, when I entered, I stood around for a good 30 mins no one asked if I needed help. This place might be full of supplies but they are very unhelpful. When I went to pay for my stuff, the women cashier said she's busy can't ring me up. REALLY?! And then the men cashier chatted with a customer for 15 mins knowing I'm just standing there waiting to pay my stuff. HOW RUDE. WILL NEVER COME BACK AGAIN. Worst store ever. read more
