It's often really foggy with or without rain - stick to speed limit, be careful overtaking, and don't tailgate
    Nik O.

None of the reviews before the end of 2013 apply anymore. Saddle road hasn't just been improved, the majority is a completely different road - now called the Daniel Inouye highway. Saddle road used to be a bumpy, dangerous roller coaster ride between Hilo and Kona that most people didn't use, and that rental car companies restricted tourists from taking. Now it's a quick easy trip to Kona taking only about an hour. The Hilo side tends to be a little foggy especially at night, slightly windy (twists, not wind), and slick if it's raining. But other than that section, just put on the cruise control and relax. But keep an eye out for sharp drops in speed limit - it's mostly 55, but goes down to 35/40 in some spots. The new saddle road is already getting notorious for speeding tickets. If you didn't know, the Big Island doesn't have official police cars - they're all civilian cars, sometimes with a little blue light, sometimes not. A major drawback to this route is that having just opened, there is NOTHING the entire way. No stops means no bathroom breaks. Assuming that will eventually change, but for now, everybody better go before you head out. For tourists who aren't in a rush, I'd still really recommend taking the Hamakua coast way - it's prettier, you're by the ocean, and I miss passing thru Waimea. I had planned on taking Hamakua to Kona, then back on saddle road, but 10 miles of highway were closed from landslides. Check road conditions for either route because if there's a closure, I have no idea where the detours would go. I think in this case, people had to just turn back.

    Foggy and wet weather

We drove Saddle Road back and forth three times during our week-long trip. Talk about sucking the marrow out of Big Island. That being said, if you're planning your route between Kona and Hilo, the road conditions should be the least of your worries. Coming from Kona, the entire road is smoothly paved, except for 5-10 miles right outside of Hilo. The unpaved portion is still under construction as of June 2011, but it's wide and not scary at all when going at moderate speed. Travel time one-way between Kona and Hilo was about 2 hours. Saddle Road isn't all unicorns and rainbows though. Although the actual road wasn't a big deal, the weather had me clinging to the "oh sh!t" bar a few times. During the majority of our rides, the weather was rainy and foggy -- Read: Very poor visibility. It's better during the daytime and a huge relief when you can catch up to another traveler and caravan it. I'm sure this consistently hazardous weather is part of the reason why some rental companies put a restriction on Saddle Road. If you do luck out and drive on a clear day, enjoy the beautiful ride.

We took this road twice. Once to go to Mauna Kea Summit. Another to visit the Hawaii Volcanoe National Park. I would probably do both in one day. We were staying at Waikoloa. I would do a morning drive to the national park and stop at Mauna Kea on the way back.

I read some of the reviews and was a little worried to take saddle road to Hilo. However, my husband and I decided to try it. It was a perfectly newly paved road with long passing lanes and not to curvy at all. One of the reviews commented on one lane bridges...those must be gone because it was smooth and clear all the way to Hilo. This road is better than most of our roads in California. I would recommend this road for everybody.

Sadly, there are NO RENTAL CARS AVAILABLE ON ALL ISLANDS except, IF you are RICH and can splurge $1,000.00 per island for four days via Turo Rental Car Agency!!!! ANYWAY . . . FYI: For people visiting Waikoloa Village, Hele-On Bus Stop is adjacent to Waikoloa Highlands Center via Paniolo Avenue & Waikoloa Road; however, I do not know where all the physical, Big Island Hawaii's bus stop locations are so, people must study the map and bus schedules I took a screenshot in order, saving time and frustration trying figuring out where you must stay on Big Island Hawaii! BTW: Winging it isn't ideal for your peace of mind because you are forcefully subjected to a egregiously limited bus schedule so, there's NO LEISURELY, AMPLE TIME visiting the beaches-period! Reiterating, I contacted Hele-On Bus' Office Friday, June 11, 2021 after arriving at Kona International Airport: Sadly, there are ONLY two buses per day, i.e., ONE BUS going to Kona in the morning as mentioned earlier AND THE ONLY LAST BUS heading towards Waimea is at 1:30 PM!!!! CRAP~I think I'm gonna cry my eyes out now!!!! Welp~Ya wanna hear da moral of my sob story, eh? Here's what you must plan: 1. Reserve your hotel accommodations via the Hele-On Bus' Bus Routes 2. Make sure you succinctly read Hele-On Bus Schedule 3. Study Hele-On Bus' Map Routes 4. Don't ignore Hele-On Bus' time schedule or you'll be stranded, i.e., pay a taxi service BIG BUCKS! 5. Since I'm a senior citizen, Hele-On Bus' fare is $1.00 each way! Anything else I must inform Yelpers visiting Big Island? The excuse that it is a free service therefore is excusably this horrible is so overused at this point that I believe their original plan was to make it free to absolutely not GAF anymore. yes our island is large, far apart, and is constantly changing. But the few things that they CAN control to help, they absolutely DO NOT. Although I'm sure they are EXTREMELY NICE AND KIND CARING PEOPLE; Calling Hele-on dispatch service is useless as they will just give excuse after excuse as to why this public transportation system is so shitty with not even the slightest kine resolution offered, or even a straight answer to your question, or concern. they literally don't care. It's so frustrating because of how vital public transportation is to SO many communities, especially with the world being so expensive, you're double punished when you're forced to ride with them.

My weekly rate of $329 soared to ridiculous $889!! What the fudge!! This disaster was going to ruin my entire vacation. I desperately scoured the interwebs for hours on discount sites like Expedia, Hotwire, Travelworm, Cheap Ticket, etc and nothing remotely better was found. About to surrender, I revised my keyword search and 10 mins later, I found Discount Hawaii Car Rental (DHCR). Not believing the incredibly reasonable rates ($200?!!) for a week on the site, I decided to YELP this one. I contacted Miriam W, an ambassor & megastar in the Yelp world, to double check and verify the legitimacy of this company. Indeed, it's the real deal. Thank you, Miriam! In confidence, I booked and reserved on DHCR's website with NO credit card information needed. Within less than an hour, a confirmation email in my inbox popped up and the edges of my lips began to curl upward (turning my frown upside down). An Alamo full sized car rental has been reserved for almost 40% lower price than the one I made 4 months ago from Thrifty!! When I arrived at Kona airport, everything went according to plan. Needless to say, I was a happy camper. Details: Website: http://www.discounthawaiicarrental.com/ Bonus: FREE additional driver included with reservations, NO cancellation fees. If your destination is the Big Island of Hawaii, this must be the ONLY place you should go to rent your car.

But realizing that I might miss my flight if any public transportation issues were to arise brought to mind an ad for Electric Limo that I had recently seen in the DeKalb New Values magazine (I ask my boyfriend to never throw those out - they're a great resource for keeping abreast of new businesses!). A flat rate to the airport in an all-electric vehicle may cost more than using public transportation, but finding a Yelp Deal inspired me go ahead and give the new company a shot. I called to reserve a taxi around 10pm on a Monday. But calling a small company at such a time probably wasn't a good idea: I didn't get an answer, and I was reluctant to leave a message because I wanted the piece of mind of a confirmed taxi pick-up in the morning before going to bed. I therefore gave Electric Limo's website a try, where I reserved a ride and received an email confirmation about 20 minutes later. Yay! A driver named Ryan picked me up the next morning in a timely and professional fashion in an awesome Tesla sedan. Electric Limo may not have the scale of a taxi fleet in a larger city - I'm used to calling cab companies at any time to arrange a reservation and paying at the end of the ride. But small interpersonal considerations underline how Electric Limo is a technologically forward-looking business with small town charm. Ron, the owner, contacted me to ask for my credit card number again because the one I provided online was incorrect. I feel a larger business would have cancelled my reservation right there. Ryan, my driver, also contacted me well before my scheduled pick-up time to notify me that flights might be delayed because of fog in the area. Overall, I had a great experience, and I definitely see myself using Electric Limo for taxi services in the future when I don't feel like lugging a suitcase through Metra and CTA trains en route to the airport.
