They lied about our accomodations, first promising us the big house and then double booking and giving it to another person who paid more. Almost derailed our honeymoon. Expect no service here. No comfort, lots of bugs in the cottage. The area is nice, just choose another property.

I will first start by saying this is not a house for a family. Our party of six, my daughter her…read morehusband, two kids ages 10 and 9 and my husband I. First of all the house is not as large as they make it out to be. both my husband and I and our daughter and son in law wanted the two king beds. I might add it is not two bedrooms in the main house, one is a loft. the kids didn't fell comfortable sleeping in the cottage and wanted to sleep in the main house with us. the twin beds did not have a sheets or blankets. one of the king beds had not been changed from the last guests and had pubic hair in it, gross! The house was not clean to the average standers of a rental. The shower was in the hall to the master bedroom which was made of mostly black rock and had no glass in the window, just screen and shutter. it was very dark and the step down to the room was very high almost to the point of being dangerous for my husband and I. Bugs and geckos were in the house. it was very disappointing and we ended up leaving the next day. The host blamed us for the dirt and would not refund our money for the nights we did not stay. I just can't understand all the great reviews for this house!

Hale Ki'i Nani was our home away from home on this last trip to the Big Island. It is located in…read morePahoa, HI, on Ki'i Nani Street....so named appropriately. My wonderful husband booked this gem through vrbo.com. It was in the area we wanted to be in and looked clean and inviting. When I arrived it was night time and they had already been there for the afternoon. The driveway is U-shaped and we were able to pull right in to the carport. There was a secured gate/door entrance to an area that has the laundry area completed with a table for folding your clothes, there is a water catchment system with a filtration system to give you potable water. There is a door to the house which leads to the stairs up to the second level of the house. there is a small living room and a kitchen/dining room with a good size table where we ate many meals. Down the hall there are 2 bedrooms (Queen sized beds in each) and one bathroom. There are clean linens, lots of pillows, and the whole place was simply well put together. The kitchen was great for us and had everything that we needed (pots, pans, flatware, dishes, mugs, wine glasses, wine opener, utensils, etc) and somethings we used that we didn't need (juicer, coffee grinder, strainers, etc.) there was a stove/oven and a full sized fridge (with ice maker/water dispenser). I fell asleep in the cool Pahoa air...to the sound of the "jungle" frogs, birds, rain, wind....it was actually quite loud, but peacefully loud. When I woke up the next morning I made some breakfast, took my travel yoga mat out of the bag and set it up on the outdoor lanai. Morning yoga was so relaxing and I realized that there was a HUGE yard with lots of fruit trees. We had fresh starfruit, oranges, avocados, and there was a bunch of bananas hanging in the carport. There is so much space in the yard that I almost suggested pitching a tent to "camp" one night. Around the back side of the house there was an outdoor stone paved shower....patches of bamboo...and more lush greenery. We spend hours lounging on the lanai watching the rain rain rain...we hung out in the small but comfortable living room...and didn't watch the tv/dvd set up even once. We adventured all over the island and were glad to get back to our hale in Pahoa at the end of the day. Overall....it was perfect for us, there are some things like the one bathroom is in the hallway (convenient for location) but the slatted door made privacy a little scarce...and the mosquitoes will getcha if you leave the screen door open. But that could be anywhere. Would we return? definitely. Recommend? Absolutely (for small families) On a side note...we forgot our garmin charger and realized it when we got home, called the owner and it was in our mailbox within the week....above and beyond. :)

I walked to the meals from my cottage, and up to the pool almost daily. It was a beautiful and peaceful walk. I was concerned at first but my body quickly adapted. The meals were amazing. I had never experienced such a healthy and delicious cuisine. Most of it was locally-sourced and organic. They had lots of vegetarian options as well as vegan. That's not to say they didn't have wonderful desserts every night with dinner. I participated in several yoga classes. They have all kinds; fast, slow, Vinyasa, Yin, you name it. But they also have cultural classes on Lei making, hula dancing, salsa dancing, permaculture hikes and more. I was not bored for even a moment. If anything I needed to take a nap a couple times during the day for having been so active and busy. The people were friendly and helpful with lots of information about the locals and the community of Pahoa. They took us to Uncles market a local market/party every Wednesday night. If you have the option to do so I would also highly recommend staying at kailani for the Open Mic at least once it's fabulous. The pool is lovely but be fore-warned its clothing optional and there's a lot of nudity. There are lounge chairs to sit in and there's even a sauna area and changing rooms. I enjoyed two massage sessions while I was there. One was an apprentice massage which was just fine and very relaxing, the other was a Lumi Lumi Hawaiian massage which was amazing and different and just... quiet an experience. I would recommend it to anyone. I hope to return next summer on a sabbatical which is 30 days of participating in the community and it includes all of my lodging and meals and some massage work as well. It was hard to leave.

I didn't make for the E-dance or Holiday Festivities or New Years Festivities but I met some people…read morewho partook in them and expressed a good time. I went for a yoga class led by Marcia, 90 minutes flew by. There's places to stay, a store etc
