We stayed a couple of nights in Kate's Volcano Cottage. It's a little hard to find at night in the local jungle (set back from the road), so you may want to get there before dark. Kathryn does email you directions when you book. The cottage is very nice inside and out, and Kathryn and Kenneth did a great job on their renovations and put a lot of thought into what to stock inside. The abundant wood gives it a "homey" cabin feel. A good size for four people. It is well-stocked with kitchen items, and picture books and guidebooks etc on the local area and volcano. Also, flashlights and gloves for hiking on the trail to see the glow of new lava of Kilauea at night. If you slip, the lava can cut you, so do wear the gloves. Would highly recommend this as a place to stay near Volcanoes National Park. Great value. read more

The way to begin our marriage, in a "place of the heart!" Nohea Cottage at Volcano Places This was so much more than staying in a cottage; it was a Volcano experience! Kathryn, the owner, was just wonderful. She gave us so much information about the area and facts about the volcanos of Hawaii. Nohea is such a beautiful structure, handcrafted, a labor of love. The warm woods and detailed construction make this cottage so special and warm. Every window has a beautiful view into a forest of ferns. The kitchen is really well equipped with quality cookware and all sorts of basics including local coffee and a coffee press. Robes, hair dryer, iron, lots of towels...a shower for two! Videos of the volcano, maps, books...really helpful! Oh, a gas stove and heated pads to take the chill away were wonderful! The trip to Volcano is an easy drive from Hilo as the mountain is a shield volcano with gently sloping sides. To my amazement the road is straight, unlike the curvy roads clinging to the cliffs we have experienced around Kona. It's hard to believe you drive from the coast to 4000 feet without curves! Kathryn suggested we go to the Volcano Farmer's Market at 6 am to be there for the cinnamon rolls! That was so worth it! Everybody was just so friendly and we bought delicious fruits and greens as well, all grown in Volcano. Nohea was so special we decided to be married on the back covered porch. It was the perfect place for our intimate ceremony for just the two of us. The birds singing around us, the brilliant green rainforest surrounding us. Kathryn was so gracious in allowing us and as we used a local couple to perform the ceremony and do photos, they knew each other. Volcano is a special place. The most perfect place my husband and I could have chosen to begin our new life together! We hope to return to Kathryn's Nohea cottage again and again. read more

Recently returned from 3 nights in Volcano and 4 nights in Kona. We really enjoyed our stay in Kate's Cottage. The cabin was cozy, clean, and contained everything you needed. It was also ideally located just 5 minutes from the entrance to VNP. Kenneth did an exceptional job turning a carport into a "gem in the forest". Kathryn was helpful with information before and after our arrival. We ate our breakfast each morning in the covered patio, serenaded by the sounds of the jungle. My only improvement recommendation is the bed; it was a bit too firm for us. Overall, the cabin was a good value and a great place to call our temporary home. read more

We stayed here 2 nights and overall stay was pleasent. I would recommend getting here before dark on your first night because it is very hard to find at night. The cottage has a full kitchen with pots and pans and other cooking utilities if you want to prepare a meal at home. I also recommend stopping at a store in Hilo for groceries needs because there are not too many choices here. The cottage is very close to Volcano park. We stayed here for two nights during our trip to the Big Island. I could have lived in Kahi Malu. It was a really great cottage. Nice change from the usual hotel room. Two good sized bedrooms. Amazing lanai off the back. Really comfortable living room with board games and dvds, which came in handy during the huge rainstorm we had on night two. Great kitchen. Actually, nicer than my kitchen at home. Our innkeepers were so sweet. They gave us great local information and stocked the place with pretty much anything we could need, from coffee to flashlights. Paid about $150 (taxes incl) per night for Kate's Cottage and wish we could have stayed longer. Kathryn and Kenneth have thought of everything. The place is very clean and well thought out. It is within a couple of minutes to the entrance of Volcanoes National Park, as well as the only little town with restaurants, gas station, and a little market for many miles. We loved to explore all day, and be able to come back to our well-lit and warm cabin (thanks guys). The kitchen is stocked with dry and warm cereals, and the necessities to cook. The roof wasn't metal, so when it rained it didn't sound like a tin can getting popped with bb pellets, as I was told to be ready for difficulty sleeping with staying in Volcano in general. The place is stocked with everything you need and extras like: toys, crayons, dvds, tv with cable, flashlights, headlights, a pancho, umbrellas (it rains a lot), maps, guidebooks, everything... :) LOVED IT and highly recommend. We hiked Kilauea Iki and it was one of the highlights of my life and the best trail I have ever hiked. Trailhead starts about 15 minutes away from Kate's Cottage. This cottage size was perfect for my husband and I with our 2 toddlers. Kate even left 2 special little futons for them. *Kenneth did the remodel for the place and it is all wood and perfectly incorporates the rainforest setting outside. read more

The place is stocked with everything you need, with lots of little touches like cereal, coffee etc. A nice and quiet place that is excellent for relaxing and enjoying the serene atmosphere. Kate's Cottage is undeniably in the jungle almost right outside Volcanoes National Park. It can be drizzly and foggy over there, so be warned. The cottage was beautiful with perfect fit and finish. It is stocked full of board games, history and tour books, toys and books for children and tons of kitchen gear. Electric blankets cut the sometimes-chill. When we checked in, Kathryn brought us a box of mac nut chocolates and paged through maps for us to help us plan our stay. She was super knowledgeable and would have done just about anything to make us comfortable. It's a little tricky to find, but then I suck at navigating so maybe you'll do better. read more

This is our second time staying at one of the cabins; last time was Kate's Cabin (great but we wanted to try a different one). Nohea is an amazingly beautiful cabin, a woodworker's masterwork. Most of the furniture is built in, and everything is beautiful natural wood, inside and out. I spent lots of time just looking at all the details. If you like to build things you may drool. The back lanai is covered and dry when it was raining. The property is surrounded by vegetation and really feels private. The gas fire makes the place super cozy in winter, and the electric mattress pad ensured our bed was nice and toasty when we got in. There are robes, hair dryer, iron, spices, cereals, coffee, teas, chocolates, board games, guide books, head lamps, binoculars, and more; the cabin is well stocked except for perishables (of course). Kathryn is a super host and full of information about everything local. The information she sent when we made the reservation was comprehensive, so pay attention to it. Unfortunately the hot tub died of old age and was removed in June '14, so the room it occupied sits empty. Kathryn told us they were considering installing a sauna in the space, which would be SO amazing (please do it!). read more

We stayed three nights in Nohea, which was built beautifully by Kate's husband. It is a stunning cabin. As soon as you walk in, you can smell the wood and feel right at home. The place is clean, comfortable and modern. There is a kitchen, which is great since Volcano is quite remote and the restaurants are not all that great. We bought groceries in Kona, as Kate suggested and were happy to be able to cook a couple nights. The place is surrounded by the rainforest and is cozy and secluded. It is also just a few minutes from Volcanoes National Park. Very happy we found this gem! read more
