We stayed here two years ago and wanted to make sure we came back. The Volcano was interrupting, but the experience at the Volcano Inn was worth it. We love Tabbi as she was so welcoming and we will be back. Definitely out shined the Volcano house and I must stay.

This is the email Volcano Inn sent me on 2/16/21.

Dishonest! Refused to honor our credit and ripped us off. TL;DR - Covid forced us to cancel our reservation in the spring of 2020. Volcano Inn gave us a one-year credit, but of course travel was still restricted after one year, so they extended our credit again. However, when we finally tried to rebook, they refused to honor our credit. The full story: 3/16/20 - We emailed to cancel our two-night reservation because of Covid. 3/30/20 - Vocano Inn issued a partial refund for one night. The second night was converted into a one-year credit. (I asked if they could simply refund us for both nights, but they said no.) 2/16/21 - California (where we live) was still banning non-essential travel. I emailed to request either a) a refund; or b) another extension of our credit. 2/16/21 - Volcano Inn replied: "Yes, we can definitely extend your credit since the pandemic is still unfortunately going strong. Just let us know whenever you have new dates and we can reschedule your reservation for you. Mahalo, Hotel Volcano Inn." (Note that there was no mention in this reply of a time limit or deadline.) 2/16/21 - I replied: "Thank you so much. We definitely want to come when it's safe . . . and when it fits with our vacation time." (Volcano Inn did not reply.) 8/18/22 - I contacted the inn to rebook. They replied that our credit had expired. 8/18/22 - I asked them to reconsider and reminded them of their email from 2/16/21. They replied: "After reviewing your reservation in detail, we could not find the reason why you were entitled to any credit at all." 8/20/22 - I reminded them of their email of 2/16/21. (No reply.) 8/23/22 - I emailed again. (No reply.) 8/28/22- I emailed again. They finally replied but again said our credit had expired. They claimed that their 2/16/21 email should have been understood to mean they were giving us a one-year extension on the credit. 8/28/22 - I pointed out that the 2/16/21 email *did not* contain anything about a deadline or a time limit. They replied, "We are sorry that you read it that way." There you have it. Volcano Inn did not honor their word, and they've cheated my family out of a one-night stay.

Stayed here for one night. Checked in after 3pm. Checked out around 8:30am the following day. The office is not in the same area as the house you're staying in. It's like an extra 5-10 minute drive. We stayed in a room meant for 5 people. There's a queen size bed, a pull out couch, and a twin size bed. There was 2 extra pillows but no covers for them. Also there was no extra sheets to use on the pull out couch. No extra blanket either so I was freezing. But it was pretty comfy. No shoe wearing allowed inside. Wifi and password located by the sign near the front door. The place itself is well maintained. Inside seemed clean. Outside landscape was very pretty. There is a hot tub a few steps away from our front door. Bathroom is decent size. They provided extra towels and robes. Water pressure in the shower isn't strong but they do provide shampoo, conditioner, and body wash. Flush is powerful. There's a humidifier, a fire place, a fridge, a microwave, a toaster, a coffee maker, and drinking water provided. Lots of utensils as well. Seems cool to stay at a place that's "inside" a forest. There wasn't any outside noise from any animals that could keep you up or wake you. Very quiet and peaceful stay. Also there's two huge windows which is a bonus during the daytime because of all the gorgeous foliage and greenery. Went to breakfast at around 7:30. They provide very light breakfast. There's Kona coffee (and I'm normally not a coffee drinker but it was delicious), bandana bread, a papaya boat filled with yogurt, almond, banana, and some sort of fruit purée (maybe applesauce?). The papayas were ripe and perfect, first time trying a papaya. Overall, enjoyed my stay at Volcano Inn.

Absolutely perfect. Quiet, spacious, comfortable, and a super short and easy drive to Volcanoes national park. Stayed here for two nights and I liked it better than the hotels that I paid 3x as much for. The fresh banana bread and papaya is AMAZING. With a sister living on Maui I visit Hawaii every couple years, I'll be staying here again for sure.

    Beautiful anthiriums surrounds Volcano Inn.

Very nice place and beautiful landscape. Breakfast is refreshing and the jacuzzi was relaxing. No problem checking in and we had a private space to park our car which was right outside our window. The mirror on the ceiling right above the bed is odd and if you want to watch TV you would need to go into the community lobby area. The only con is the footsteps and the dragging of the furniture you can hear from upstairs which eventually settled down. 1st night no problem, but 2nd night I could not get the early sleep I hoped to get. I changed my rating because there are more pros than that one con.

Wow! There are not enough fantastic adjectives to describe how great this place is. First off, we arrived and it was so tranquil and inviting. We met Isabella and she was just a breath of fresh air. She was a warm and welcoming site to the rainy and really cold day at the national park. We rented the room with a queen size bed and a twin with a private bathroom. The room had great space, was immaculate, and offered a wonderful bathroom. In the morning we had the absolute best breakfast made from Isbaella, papaya bread, banana bread, and yogurt. Everything was absolutely outstanding. I highly recommend checking this place out when you are in Volcano Village.

Higher altitude. Cooler temps. Friendly staff. Unique accommodations. Incredible breakfast. This was one of my favorite places we stayed on the Big Island. It has a vibe that could be best described as "laid-back hippy treehouse". The fresh stuffed papaya breakfasts are incredible. I'm usually 100% opposed to the con-job that is "free breakfast" at hotels, but NOT HERE. The prices on the rooms are beyond affordable! They have hot tubs, but I didn't make time to try them out. Protip: trust the directions on their website, NOT on google maps. Entire loving relationships have ended for less!

Would you stay at the worst room in a hotel cheaper than Motel 6? We wanted a hotel to stay near Volcano National Park on the big island of Hawaii, entered a date, and TripAdvisor listed available hotels and rates. The only hotel within the park was Volcano House, and the rate was $300+. And this is not your 4 Seasons hotel! At Volcano House you are paying for a small room with a view from the publicly accessible veranda of the volcano crater. Volcano Inn listed at $119 a night, the least expensive hotel listed, and a 5 minute drive from Volcano House. Take a $200 savings, and drive 3 additional miles! To get the cheapest rate, call the hotel directly, and get an additional discount. I make the reservation, and receive an e-mail, asking for full payment for my stay. Send personal check to the hotel within 5 days, to hold the reservation. This hotel does not take credit cards, only cash, or personal checks that have cleared prior to your stay. You don't want to do a midnight drive to an ATM in Hilo 40 minutes away. Cancel outside of 30 days prior to your stay, and lose 70% of your payment. Cancel within 30 days of your stay, and lose 100%. Don't book here until after you book your direct airline flights from the mainland. It's like marriage -don't commit until you are 100% certain! No exceptions to the cancellation policy -plane crash, floods in the area, Trump elected president- short of the volcano erupting and the lava flow pouring through the inn. And even then, you'll be accountable if your room is intact, even if you have to wear a gas mask! No volcano activity means minimal business. A full scale eruption with lava flowing into town, with the poisonous fumes also means no business. The owners want a happy medium, with some volcanic activity, but survivable!. Hardest thing about this place is finding it. There's a Volcano House, Volcano Gardens, Volcano Store, Volcano Arts, Volcano Golf all within Volcano Village. Place is at the end of Old Volcano road, with the buildings hidden behind a rain forest, with only a rickety overhead sign at the entrance. 10' wide 100' length gravel access lane, and hope you don't meet someone coming out, especially as the entering car would back up onto a blind curve. Remember those restaurant signs "no shirt, no shoes, no service"? Here it's no shoes for service. Sign at front of stairs to 2nd floor registration says "remove shoes before entering". Don't want you tracking in volcanic pebbles on the soles of your shoes, scratching the hardwood floor. Ladies, don't bring your good shoes, least they get swiped by someone like me, wearing baby blue, crisscross strap Chako sandals. Don't wear those socks with holes in them, and not white socks, where the dirt shows. Men, get a pedicure, as nobody wants to see your hairy, dried out feet with blackened, yellow, overgrown toe nails! Registration gives us a key with a 6" piece of wood attached, long enough to put a hole in your pocket. We get the worst of the 22 rooms in the hotel -ground floor next to the stairs going to the 2nd floor, right underneath the hardwood floors of the breakfast deck -no oversleeping in this room! Room with a view? Four tall windows with a view of the parking lot! Room with a view costs an additional $50. Place is immaculately clean and tidy, with no cockroaches to be seen. Firm and comfortable queen bed, Free Wifi, CRT TV from the previous century, humidifier, dvd player, overhead fan and area to hang clothes. Tile floor of fake wood. On the ceiling above the bed is a mirror. And you thought this was only in Vegas! No AC, no closet, no dresser. no coffee maker, no microwave, no refrigerator, no heater, no working deadbolt on front door. Upgraded room with everything available for $50 extra, except the AC and heater. Bathroom has its own full length window, which my wife covers with the translucent curtain. She doesn't want me flashing the guests, causing them to lose their appetites on their way to breakfast! Sink is 1980s style, with minimal counter space. No sink stopper and no bath tub stopper -this is deliberate so guests use less water. Narrow bathtub, or I'm just getting fatter! Water collected from roof drainage. Toilet has ancient plumbing and has to be flushed twice to flush everything. Immaculate rainfall landscaping with communal salt water hot tub. High winds at night cause plants and branches to blow back and forth, activating the motion detector lights in front of our translucent curtains. Spooky. 5am, we drive 15 minutes to the Jagger Museum for the best view of the lava flowing in the caldera. Breakfast upstairs is papaya boats filled with sliced banana, yogurt and macadamia nuts, along with banana bread, coffee and hot chocolate. Enough for seconds. I'm on the toilet, when everything shakes. Volcano erupting? Just the next door washer/dryer. Don't get a wet bottom from sloshing toilet water! Early 10am checkout time.

Beautiful bed and breakfast. Perfect proximity outside the national park. Highly recommend a night here while in this area. Breakfast was amazing!

We booked online for a Kama'aina rate for two nights at the Rainbow Falls Cottage and it was a…read moremagical experience: no TV, no wi-fi (there is, but you have to be in the main building for it to work), no phones. Instead, you will hear chirping birds, maybe the meow of the resident cat Pumpkin, the purring and cooing from the group of domesticated pheasants that roam the property, and the coqui frogs at night. Ownership changed from Hale Ohia Cottages to the current Volcano Village Estates after COVID. RAINBOW FALLS COTTAGE: Rainbow falls was larger in person than what it looked like on their website to me, at least. The cottage has small two-person porch, a bedroom, a kitchenette area and bathroom. The porch was small but just right for 2 persons. The chair cushions were kind of worn down but who cares, you're outside! The table had an uneven surface so we put our wine glasses on the porch rails. The main room had a queen sized bed which was rather soft and gave us backaches, but some people may prefer a softer bed. I ended up sleeping on the chaise lounge one night, mostly due to husband's snoring, but I did like the firmness of the lounge chair. Lighting in the room was very well thought-out. You can tell the owners have traveled to hotels and places with poor lighting and made sure this didn't happen on any of their properties (read my review for the Royal Kona Resort); there were many lamps and side-lights which you could use for mood as well as reading/packing. There's a gas fireplace you turn on with a remote, and it kept the room comfortable at night at the end of April, when temps went down into the upper 50s. There's no air conditioner as the temps up by volcanos are cooler. KITCHENETTE: Very well thought out, with small ceramic dishes, bowls, coffee cups, glass drinking glasses and wine glasses and silverware. I packed disposable paper plates because most places I've been to don't supply dishes/utensils, so this was a classy and nice surprise. There's a coffee maker with the inn's signature coffee blend enough for two cups; a mini-fridge with a freezer and a microwave. Breakfast is placed in the fridge daily for you so you can eat it whenever you want. First day it was 4 banana pancakes and a fruit platter. Second day was my favorite with "Volcano Blossoms"; eggs in a tortilla cup (vegetarian) or ham cup, which was very well thought-out and separated with waxed paper. My husband loved the egg in the ham cup. It was super tasty, wish I had the recipe! It also came with a fresh fruit plate. BATHROOM: The shower was a bit dark and small, but it's an old cottage and this was it's charm. There's a flexible shower hose that sometimes started making dripping noises at night, so I'd put the shower hose head down toward the floor and that took care of the problem. Shampoo/conditioner in dispensers on the wall. Mini bar soaps and fluffy, clean, amazing towels provided daily. Very comfy bathrobes also provided and we used those for the hot tub. Hot water plentiful. Toilet has dual-flush system. Seats are cold in the morning, but hey, you're in a rainforest! OTHER: Parking, free, no ridiculous "parking fees" like at other resorts. There is a carport with 3 covered spots but we just parked outdoors on the property. Hot tub near the cottage for use, large towels in a bin. Very relaxing in the early evening hours with a glass of wine, listening to the coqui frogs. The cottages provides you with a flash light so you can walk a few feet back to your cottage without a problem. Most of the cottage lights are already on at night on the porches, so it's not a big problem. We didn't get to see any stars in the night sky when we went as it was overcast, as a treat for us is to see the sky without city light pollution, but if you're able, go out into the evening and see the bright stars and maybe some shooting stars as well. A full moon night would be an extra bonus for ambience. We had a housekeeper named Valerie who kept our cottage spanking-clean. I actually had never seen a cottage or inn-type place that clean before. SPOTLESS. Even the mirrors, every corner, clean. Of course the carpet was a bit worn, but that's due to time, and you're supposed to take your shoes off, Hawaii-style, but I am sure some guest trudge in with shoes, a big no no in Hawaii. Valerie was super friendly and answered all of our questions regarding places to eat, things to see, etc. The lady that checked us in and who was there daily was also very nice. We got texts daily asking us if everything was OK, now that is FIVE STAR!! Although there were other guests, we didn't hear any noise. It was very quiet, serene and calm. At times we found ourselves whispering for no reason at all to preserve the quiet of the place. No mosquitos that we encountered here, as we were prepared with repellant but didn't need to use it. RETURN FACTOR - 100% YES, next time in the Pineapple Ohana Cottage as it has it's own private hot tub.

I would rank my recent two-night stay at Volcano Village Estates one of my worst hotel experiences…read more My complaints center in four areas--food hygiene, safety, room cleanliness/condition, and total lack of owner communication. On day two of our stay, there was a cockroach on our breakfast inside our refrigerator. The innkeeper told me that in a rain forest, it's common to have insects in the rooms. I told her my concern was that the cockroach came in on the food, which raises significant concerns about food preparation and hygiene. (As an aside, I would not recommend opting for "breakfast", which was meager. For example, our first breakfast for two people consisted of two small burritos, which you had to heat yourself in the microwave, a kiwi, a tangerine, and a dozen grapes.) My safety concern was that there was a non-functional smoke alarm in my daughter's room when we arrived. Because there is no HVAC system, portable heaters are provided for heat at night. The innkeeper addressed the issue, which was due to a dead battery. A quick AI review (and yes, AI is not perfect!) says, "Hawaii requires functional smoke alarms in all residential dwellings, including hotels, rental properties, and multi-family homes. These alarms are generally mandated to be hardwired with battery backups, interconnected, and tested regularly." The system was not hardwired and obviously hadn't been tested. There were significant issues with room cleanliness/condition. My daughter's unit had a half eaten/half melted ice cream treat in the refrigerator when we arrived. Our room (called Papa) had unfinished plywood floors and walls except for the bath area, which was finished. The innkeeper said the owners "preferred it that way". On each side of the bed, there was a small carpet remnant that was dirty and stained. In our bath area, vanity lighting consisted on a single low wattage pendant light that was inadequate for shaving, make-up, etc. I raised all these issues with the innkeeper on the day of our departure and suggested that an adjustment on our room fees would be reasonable. The property manager responded promptly with an adjustment of about $100. I then suggested that a single night refund of one room fee would be more reasonable, but she said that the property owners would have to approve that, and I could expect a response in 2 days. Not receiving any response, I have since texted the innkeeper multiple times and was assured on each occasion that the owners would respond. Nothing has happened in three weeks. I write this review as an experienced traveler (over 50 countries) and as a vacation rental property owner. There are a multitude of problems with Volcano Village Estates compounded by the owner's indifference in addressing legitimate concerns. I would not recommend staying here.

It served its purpose for a quick overnight near Volcano, but it's not somewhere I'd choose to stay again. The room itself felt very outdated and in need of a refresh. What stood out more than the decor, though, was the cleanliness. There was noticeable dust buildup on the light fixtures and bathroom vents, which honestly felt gross and like such an easy thing to address. It's the kind of detail that makes you question overall upkeep. The property has a koi pond, but when we were there the water was pretty murky, which took away from what could have been a charming feature. Soundproofing is also minimal. You can hear just about everything other guests are doing, so if you're a light sleeper, that's something to consider. A couple other things to note, the check-in process is self serve so it is super simple and you can arrive anytime. The coffee pictured here was undrinkable for us and we ended up going out to buy some instead. If you're in a pinch and just need somewhere close to Volcano National Park for a night, it works. But with so many unique and cozy options on the Big Island, I'd likely explore other accommodations next time.
