Our merry group
Blair B.

We've just returned from an outstanding excursion to the Big Island where we stayed in the most beautiful and charming  bungalows located at Volcano Village Estates. We truly could not have picked a better location to act as our point of departure as we explored the volcanic region of Hilo, Big Island. The team at Volcano Village Estates could not have been more accommodating, and a special thanks must go out to John who went above and beyond to make sure that our stay was both comfortable and well-spent. John and his team were so responsive and remained in communication with texts which made it quite easy to coordinate our arrival, departure, and several other important areas when communication was necessary or beneficial. The breakfast each morning was delicious too (I'm still reminiscing about the yummy French toast), the view was tropical at its best, and the rooms were perfect for our group of 6. We are already excited about future return visits and we would not dream of staying anywhere else in Hilo. We could not recommend this remarkable bread and breakfast styled place to stay in a tropical rainforest paradise.

There were so many favorite aspects of my stay - the proximity to Volcano National Park, knowledgeable staff with inside tips, quiet surroundings, comfortable bed and bedding, delicious breakfast, and lush grounds. I was able to come, relax, keep up on work, and play in nature - couldn't ask for more.

Cottage 44

The most tranquil and serene cottage I've ever stayed in. Loved everything about this property, including Michael - the host, baker and care taker! We stayed in Cottage 44 which Michael had originally built for himself. It was well designed and cozy, full of character and charm. The gas fireplace kept us warm throughout the evenings. The bedroom is an old recycled water barrel - really cool. It's super private, the bath looks out in to the rainforest and feels like a luxurious spa! For breakfast, Michael stocks our kitchenette with fresh baked banana bread (he bakes them every morning), passion fruit juice, ripe papaya and apple bananas. We don't like to stuff ourselves silly in the mornings so this was the perfect amount for my husband and I. This was our favourite lodging throughout our trip - and there are some serious contenders, including the Fairmont Orchid and Hapuna Prince on the gold coast.

We decided to spend a night on the Hilo side and booked this about a week before departure, so it…read morewas a bit of a last minute decision. It served its purpose for a quick overnight near Volcano, but it's not somewhere I'd choose to stay again. The room itself felt very outdated and in need of a refresh. What stood out more than the decor, though, was the cleanliness. There was noticeable dust buildup on the light fixtures and bathroom vents, which honestly felt gross and like such an easy thing to address. It's the kind of detail that makes you question overall upkeep. The property has a koi pond, but when we were there the water was pretty murky, which took away from what could have been a charming feature. Soundproofing is also minimal. You can hear just about everything other guests are doing, so if you're a light sleeper, that's something to consider. A couple other things to note, the check-in process is self serve so it is super simple and you can arrive anytime. The coffee pictured here was undrinkable for us and we ended up going out to buy some instead. If you're in a pinch and just need somewhere close to Volcano National Park for a night, it works. But with so many unique and cozy options on the Big Island, I'd likely explore other accommodations next time.

This hotel is such a gem. No front desk, but check in/check out was easy. We felt like we were…read morestaying in a beautiful tropical tree house! Comfy bed, very clean, fridge, microwave, hair dryer. We slept so well! The shower was fun - a lot of the space felt like you were in a cave. I'd highly recommend staying here! Great Air B&B to stay while on the Big Island to explore Volcano National Park. The owner has been…read morerunning this for years and has family members just a few doors away. Also the whole fire department knows and loves her and they always know who is staying which is sweet as they are watching out for her. It's been rough over the pandemic since there haven't been many visitors but hopefully that picks back up. The room was quite cozy and bed was comfortable. Had a hot shower after being soaked in the cold rain and that was nice. (Please leave a TIP for the Cleaning person! She cleans and that's how she makes her money - also hard during the pandemic!) The breakfast she made us the next morning was AMAZING!!! And she loves tea so I'm ordering her some of my favorite from the mainland to be delivered to her. Also - she asks you to arrive during daylight because 1. It's hard to see and find your way at night. And 2. She's older and doesn't need to be answering the door to strangers at night. (Even with her friends and neighbors watching for her!) Lovely stay and I recommend it.
