Don't be afraid! This place is great! We stayed in room 6, the orchid suite. It was very clean, the bed is sooo comfy. I really appreciate that everything we needed was in the room- mini fridge, microwave, silverware, plates, cups, coffee maker, soap, shampoo, conditioner, space heater, snacks (apples, granola bars, oatmeal, top ramen), ground coffee and sugar. I LOVE funky places, and this was right up my alley. Our room had a separate entrance, so it's not like a traditional bed and breakfast where you're required to awkwardly mingle with other guests and the owner. I never even saw or talked to the owner, it was super easy- you just park in front of the room (reserved for you), and the key's in the door for you. One warning! - watch out for the step in the middle of the room! The step separates two levels. I almost rolled my ankle twice, thankfully I didn't . I highly recommend this place. It's affordable, it's clean, it's only 5 minutes away from vnp.. I didn't have time to see their lava tube, or the hot tub. But the short time I did stay there was very enjoyable. Also, as far as VNP goes - it's so worth it (the drive)! We brought small flashlights, cheapo monoculars and we went at around 9:30 pm. It was fantastic - we saw the active fountains spewing up a bit. Spectacular also, walking through the lava tube at VNP is really cool. read more

The place was a good location for volcano, not worth it though. When we arrived the female host was a bit aggressive toward us and made us feel uncomfortable. The house very much looked as it does in the photos on the outside The host said since we had a dog she was going to remove the rugs since they do not have time to clean them between guests, (this is posted on her ad" but the rugs were on the floor when we arrived and were filthy. The bedding as far as the sheets and pillow cases smelled and appeared clean, but the top blankets were clearly not cleaned recently and were dusty as well as smelled like mildew. The throw pillows were unable to be washed so we didn't not use them. They were dusty and mildew as well The floors were disgusting. The only sponge for dishes and the "kitchen" was stored unpackaged on the floor by the toilet scrubber and dish soap. Beware This is not a kitchen it's a bathroom sink with a mini fridge and some dishes. The hot tub could be a nice touch but it was very dirty in the water and the vents were gross so we spent little time in there. When we went to rinse off after the hot tub there was no hot water or pressure. We told the host and they said there was. I guess just not while we were staying there. Then some creepy guy who I assume was the make host tried to come into our room and he was always staring and creeping around. The shared walls are thin to the other Airbnb. After we complained and asked for a partial refund the host left a dishonest review of me as a guest on my Airbnb saying we had more people Then we actually did and that we trashed the place. She said it took them two hours to clean it, but fortunately I expect to interact with dishonest people in this world and I was smart enough to take photos of the place and how we cleaned it and left it in better condition then we found it. read more

Everything about this place was absolutely amazing...! My family & I stayed for six nights early September 2024, in room #5, as we were visiting for my brother's wedding... We had everything we needed and the four of us could've easily stayed here for months at a time quite comfortably, in fact we would've loved to be able to do that, we didn't want to leave, it felt like our home, lol... The hosts were super friendly, they went above and beyond what they had to do to ensure we had an amazing stay. We even accidently locked ourselves out one night and I had to call Shannon at 1am to let us in... She answered within the second ring and within 5 minutes of calling her the problem was resolved and we were inside cozy and comfortable... The hot tub was spacious, clean and set at perfect temperature, we utilized it every day... The water inside the unit we stayed in, Room #5, was nice and hot and long lasting... The location is ideal, close to everything... The grounds surrounding the property are enchantingly beautiful and well maintained... The Lava Tube just feet away from the units was absolutely MAGICAL...! Staying at Aloha Crater Lodge and Lava Tube was one of the best decisions we made when planning our Hawaiian trip... There are not enough great things I can say. If you want the best value, most comfortable bed (I am sure an angel is missing a cloud or two in heaven). Breakfast, oatmeal, yogurt, granola bars, fresh fruit, coffee and tea. The tub was wonderful and the hospitality top notch. As you drive in there is a very "homey" feeling! No check in, Dan just said we were in Room 3 , and the key was in the door. This room was a bit tight. One queen size which was very comfortable. The bathroom was a bit small. About the size of a cruise-ship. Although the room was clean and orderly, it did seem just a bit musty! The food for breakfast was ok, and they did replenish everyday. The location is the key! This place is so convenient to the Volcano and surrounding areas. A great location to the Volcano but the rooms could use a major upgrade! read more

1. The web page for Aloha Crater Lodge is volcanohawaiilodge.com and it advertises an on-site lava tube.with photos and videos. Way cool! Making a trip to the Big Island, I made a point of booking this location and dragged the rest of the party along just to humor me. Upon arrival we were told that the lava tube is closed indefinitely. Nowhere on the web site is that mentioned! 2. This location is like a tropical jungle - beautiful if that's what you're looking for. The windows are kept open for ventilation, letting in all that humid air. There happens to be a washer and dryer in Room 5 so a more sensitive person in our party elected to throw their bedding into the dryer. Keep that in mind if you're sensitive to a damp feel to your bedding. It also applies to the towels. That same sensitive person made the mistake of breathing in while toweling her face. Turned into a major allergy-like attack! We ended up offering a inhaler just to help her stop. And it continued to bother her for the remainder of the trip. 3. Then given the mold and poor grout in the bath enclosure and lack of heat, we elected to bathe at our next stop. 4. There is an outdoor hot tub. The water looked a little dirty. If none of this is of concern, then enjoy your stay! read more

I was impressed by their beautiful rainforest entrance and welcomed by tropical fruits on my arrival. It just takes a few mins to reach the national park. The room was clean and cozy with a very reasonable rate. Room 2 can accommodate up to 4 persons. Overall I had two wonderful nights. My hubby and I stayed here for three nights when we visited the Big Island. We decided to split our trip - a few nights in or around Volcano, to have easy access to the Volcanoes National Park, and a few nights on the Kona side, to enjoy all of the resorts and snorkeling. Honestly, this was the best trip-planning decision I've ever made and staying at the Aloha Crater Lodge was a close second! Since I had waited until kind of the last minute to book hotels for the Volcano side, I started off by calling a bunch of well-known hotels in Volcano and in Hilo to check vacancies. Of course, nothing was available in our price range. A receptionist at the Kilauea Lodge referred me to the Aloha Crater Lodge, saying it's a Bed and Breakfast and the owners are very friendly. I decided to check them out. After checking out their website and their trip advisor reviews (which are, sadly, just average), I called them and spoke with Shannon. Shannon Fisher is the wife in this husband and wife team that owns the lodge & runs the bed and breakfast. She was really sweet and offered us the Master Bedroom Suite, which had its own private jacuzzi, for $120/night. This was a little more than we wanted to pay, but it was getting close to our departure date, and Shannon sounded really nice, so we decided to go for it. This bed and breakfast is super close to the Volcano, just minutes away, on Highway 11 in Volcano Village. Getting there requires a short, beautiful drive down Lanihuli Road, where you'll feel like you're being transported to a different world. It's the jungle! There were trees, birds, frogs, you name it. We pulled into the B&B and were blown away. It's on a huge parcel of land with dogs, cats, wild flowers, plants everywhere. It's gorgeous! We went up to our room, which was on the 2nd floor and had a private balcony. The room was very spacious and well-maintained. It had a mini kitchen with a little refrigerator, coffee and tea, fresh baked banana bread daily, fresh juice, etc. The jacuzzi was a nice touch - it really helped soothe our muscles after a long day of traveling. The B&B itself is located on top of a lava tube (part of Kazamura Cave), and the owners will take you on a free tour of the cave. I highly recommend it! I'd never seen or done anything like this before. We climbed down a metal ladder into a dark pit where we had to wear headlamps to see anything. The husband, Dan, explained a lot of unique things about the lava tube and kindly took many many photos of us. It was a fun experience! My only complaints about Aloha Crater Lodge are minimal. First, the price is a little steep for what you get. (I'm comparing this to the Priceline deal we got for the Sheraton, at only $90 a night). Second, the room could use a little updating -- the towels were rough and worn down, the room was dusty, and the bathroom needed a deep cleaning. Part of it is due to being in the jungle - it's always very damp, and nothing ever gets completley dry - but I think a deep cleaning or professional cleaning would do wonders for this room. Also, be warned that the entire jungle and your room is permeated by a musty odor -- again, no fault of the owners -- this is the smell of the dampness, the vegetation, etc. that surrounds you. All in all, I'd recommend Aloha Crater Lodge to travelers and I'd go back myself anyday! read more

I give it five stars because the experience we had in the lava tubes about a half a mile hike over rocks/lava make sure you wear tennis shoes they provide helmets ,gloves and lights just amazing ...the entrance is on their property . The environment is very relaxing and private Nice outdoor Jacuzzi .They also Have a nice little continental breakfast that's already in your room so eat whatever time you want yogurt, fresh fruits fresh baked goods ,coffee ,hot chocolate, etc . Owners are very friendly/helpful. Rooms are very basic with all the amenities and clean for the price and the experience you have you can't beat it. $120 cant get that deal anywhere around here with everything... so happy we found this little gem... read more

This place is wonderful. The owners (husband and wife) are so nice. The wife (sorry I forgot both of their names) made sure we had fruit and wonderful baked goods every morning. The room is stocked with coffee from Hilo coffee plantation. I didn't even know! I need coffee in the morning, so I bought ground coffee only to find out we had some in our room. Shucks! Our room had such a cozy homey feel to it. Not to mention there is a lava tube in their backyard, which the husband will take you on a free tour through. Just a fair warning, he's a bit touchy feely for my own taste, but he's super friendly. Other wise the tour is great, because unfortunately we booked our trip when the Gov. shutdown happened, so we could not go see the volcanoes. So having a lava tube tour was a blessing to our trip. Great location in a lush forest setting and very close to the park and volcano village. We were greeted by very friendly dogs that my daughter loved. The accommodations are rustic, but quite comfortable for a great price. The fridge with yogurt, plus fruit, coffee, and assorted warm drinks are waiting for you in the room. I stayed here with my husband, our 4.5 yr old and 7 yr old girls. We loved it. Shannon and Danny were so helpful and kind. My girls really liked Bella, the rabbit that was outside our cabin. We stayed here for 3 nights 10-12 April. It was my first visit to Hawaii and I was so excited to be there! We drove from the airport on a wet and dull Friday afternoon and had a little trouble finding the place - we should've looked more closely at the directions owner Shannon had sent to us as they were very helpful and detailed. We stayed in Room 3 on the ground floor. The room has a very rustic feel but perfectly clean and cosy. The Lodge is located in the middle of a forest, it rains a lot, and I quickly learned to be careful with crumbs so as not to attract any uninvited visitors. The breakfast put in our room each morning was delicious and plentiful with homemade cakes, juice, yoghurt, coffee, real milk in the fridge, fruit and ... the absolutely best papayas we tasted in all our time in Hawaii! Shannon gave us some good tips about visiting the nearby volcano. She also kitted us out in hard hats and gloves before we followed her into a hidden opening in the undergrowth, down a ladder, and into the most amazing lava tube! We later visited the Thurston Lava Tunnel and there is no comparison! The Lava Tube at Aloha Crater Lodge is not full of crowds of visitors, and the formations are intact and beautiful. It was one of the highlights of our trip! We had a great experience at the Aloha Crater Lodge and would have no hesitation in recommending it to other travelers looking for a simple place to stay whilst exploring the Volcanoes National Park. read more

I am giving this hotel one star, while I should just be issuing a warning to NOT STAY here. We unfortunately did in December, 2017, based on false? reviews and their misleading website. Some key hyperbole or inaccuracies: 1) there is no hotel, per se, only a house with bedrooms and keys if you're lucky enough to arrive when it's convenient for the owner (who is very grouchy - she is, he is, the relatives are, the help is). 2) the banana bread is actually like an Easy-Bake oven "cake" and it is/they are gross. 3) the lava tube on property is like a backyard pipe gone bad, and they charge you for going in - providing uncleaned goggles (pink eye anyone?), old, dirty helmets (head lice anyone?), and no one to guide you (enter at your own risk!). My family stayed in a room upstairs in the house, with two bedrooms, one with twin beds (european twins, able to fit one skinny person who doesn't want to change positions at night per bed) and a "king" bed that might be as old as the Big Island. The sheets smelled and we found a sock in our bed, evidence that no laundry or changing of sheets had taken place. I wish I could include my pictures, showing the "reception area" complete with "Beware of Dog" signs and other welcoming touches. It is a dutch door, where a grumpy person will shoo you away, if you have any questions or need anything. And breakfast is whatever was leftover from the last people who stayed there: a mason jar of cereal (soft from the dampness of the area), instant coffee, and various flavors of soda in the refrigerator. Our freezer contained a box of about 20 "banana breads" all sitting, waiting to be thawed for the next guests. We will occasionally go camping as a family, and this was worse than sleeping outside with fresh air. Oh, and the cute bunnies, birds, and other animals people name in their reviews? LOUD throughout the day and night and providing a wide variety of poop to cover the property. Honestly, I don't know how these people are allowed to stay open and "house" human beings. Note on Yelp's listing that this hotel, from 8am to 6pm is CLOSED! read more

When we got into room, the first thing we noticed was that it smelled like sewage or toilet. And later we found a big wet (smelly) spot beside our bed. Also we found a lot of small cockroaches in sink and shower area. I believe they have a serious sewage problem. I want to leave the room right way! In addition, the owner is very rude and inconsiderate. Our freight was canceled and arrived on the next day due to two hurricanes in Hawaii. We understand that they can not refund (about $155) for the first night However, the owner "argued" that the reason why they can not refund and kept arguing for a whole breakfast time. We were trying to catch up the day that we missed and the best out of it. She did not have any compassion that we can not get a refund. read more

Aloha Crater Lodge is a wonderful place to stay. We had room #1 and loved the lush tropical jungle all around the house. Each morning, we greeted Bella the local bunny rabbit and relished the wonderful breakfast that Dan & Shannon always left for us (Lilikoi jelly, muffins, granola & oats, orange juice, yogurts, milk, chocolate coffee, bananas, rambutan, apples, papaya, and oranges). We both had never eaten more fruit in our lives! It was wonderful. (-: The Lodge was easy to find using phone GPS. Dan & Shannon also email you directions telling you exactly how to get there. The lodge itself is lovely stained wood with pretty paintings inside and waxy flowers outside. We would definitely stay there again. read more

The private lava tube tour on the property of the Aloha Crater Lodge alone made this a great place to stay for a night. But the kindness of the owners (Shannon and Dan) and affordability and cleanliness of our room made it a great choice too. Hubby and I were fortunate enough to get a room last minute on a Saturday night. The room was comfortable and I appreciated having a mini heater in the room because it did get a little chilly, even in July. The highlight of the stay was the private lava tube tour for me and my hubby led by Dan. He was very knowledgeable about the tube and it was great chatting with him and learning about the tube and the history of Hawaii, among other things. And since we ended up staying at the Aloha Crater Lodge last minute without knowing anything about the place (we usually search TripAdvisor thoroughly before staying anywhere), the lava tube tour was a wonderful surprise. It was complimentary because we were staying overnight, but I think there's a fee if people who are not guests want to do it. I've recommended the place to my friends who live on the Big Island if they or their visitors want to stay overnight near Volcano Park. read more

We stayed here in August 2011 and loved it! Located very close to the volcanoes with the rooms all looking into a rainforest setting, this place was a hidden gem. The suites have a homey feel and the hosts have homemade muffins and fresh fruit in your room every morning. The deck was relaxing and the master bedroom that we stayed in had a spacious layout with a relaxing oversized tub. The underground lava tubes (which we were unaware of when we booked our stay here) were amazing!! I would recommend staying here just to experience the lava tubes. Dan (the owner) took the two of us on a tour walking though the tubes and provided us with flashlights. He was very knowledgeable about the land and the history of the volcanoes, and he offered to take charge of our camera so we could enjoy the scenery along the way while he photographed our experience. This place gave us the relaxation everyone deserves when vacationing (or stay-cationing) in Hawaii. Some areas of Aloha Lodge may seem worn out or out dated to some travelers, but I think it just shows the character and history of the place. Highly recommended staying here, even if it's just to check out the lava tubes read more

Would we stay here again? In a heartbeat! The Ohana House was the absolute perfect place for our family reunion. Close to Volcanoes National Park and Kapoho (ask the owner, he'll tell you how to get to the swimmable tide pool there that only locals know about). It's main draw, though, is the serenity. No traffic, no hassle -- just the sounds of birds in the morning and coqui frogs at night. Rainfall on the tin roof at night was an added bonus. I'm kama`aina (from the Islands), but I'm sure malihini (newcomers) would love it just as much as my family and I did -- unless chain resorts are your thing. Best of all, though, is owner Elvie's cooking! Beautifully presented, healthy meals that were delicious. Clearly, it's a labor of love for her.
