Hawai Lalala Guest House - Balancing stones is one of the most meditative experiences you could treat yourself to. I left my mark with many of these creations.

Plan ahead for meals and anything you might need for your stay. A well stocked outdoor kitchen is included if you want to cook your meals. Electricity for phones, computers, etc is available but limited since it is not connected to the main electric grid. With some advance planning, this should not be a problem. Cellular service for some providers is limited or not available. Thankfully, WiFi is included. The host is extremely friendly and helpful. This place is a gem! We will be back again on our next trip!

If you're a nudist like me, it was highly encouraged by the owner, and if you want an even more incredible nudist experience, Kehena Beach, about a 15 minute drive down the road, is one of the most beautiful clothing optional black sand beaches I've ever been to. The Bali Hut itself is very cozy, with a queen size bed, a table with two chairs, a sink with warm and cold water, and is well stocked with teas, coffee, dishes, cutlery, extra towels and sheets, etc. There was a large umbrella set up outside to cover the beach chairs if I wanted to sit out in the rain, and a small burner to cook on. I loved the warm outdoor shower and compostable toilet, as it went along with the natural experience of the place. The sound of the waves and the beautiful calls of the coqui frogs lulled me to sleep every night, and I couldn't wait for the sun to come up so that I could rush out to see the sunrise with my coffee in the morning. If you are a photographer, the subject matter is incredible...from gorgeous sunrises, vibrant flora and fauna, amazing textures in the Pahoehoe Lava, spectacular waves, and the list goes on. Spinner Dolphins are often swimming nearby, and the newest black sand beaches on the planet were recently created by the Fissure 8 lava flow at Pohoiki and Kapoho. One of the most meditative things you will ever do is attempting to balance rocks...and believe me, I left my mark with many of these structures. Just down the road to the left as you are leaving the Bali Hut property is Uncle Roberts. They have a well-stocked grocery and liquor store, an amazing Smoothie Shack, a vegan/meat lovers cafe, a bar, and every Wednesday night they have a festival with about 300 patrons, offering live music, a wonderful assortment of foods and garden vegetables from local vendors, fire dancers, and beautiful local crafts. If you want the experience of a lifetime, I promise that you won't be disappointed here. Thank you so much. (Greg, Nanaimo, B.C., Canada)

The host is perfection, he is so knowledgeable about the island and the local sights and so helpful, sweet, friendly, and fun. The house is comfortable, clean, calm, and I met some other guests that have become forever friends. The area is amazing with the ocean so close you can walk and a black sand clothing optional beach a short drive away. Uncle Awa's bar is very close, also a little market there, and don't miss the Wed. nite food and arts festival. Also a short drive to Pahoa, a quaint sleepy town with wonderful hippie shops and great Thai food! Also a not too far ride to Volcano National Park, and also several waterfalls- very cool! We picked fresh passion-fruit and lemons in the tropical garden and made passion-fruit lemonade. The kitchen is fully stocked and we made fabulous meals. All in all it was the perfect vacation. I will definitely be returning and can not recommend Gay Hawaii B&B highly enough!!

The owner over booked & offered a BALI HUT which is The NIGHTMARE. Rainstorm downpour 5 days. Dripping roof from rain, screens not secured & 2 inch opening under entry door for easy access from jungle critters. The door doesn't lock. If you're looking for numerous mosquito bites, critters & way too many ghekos trying to get out of rain. They live between the rafters. I tried to move back & reclaim my room main home. No one replied, owner got angry & accused me of coming all the way there & making this up not to pay. I also was accused of stalking because of trying to get moved or something? This is NONSENSE. I had to check out after 2 days with no sleep. Because of a holiday wee I paid triple the cost at a last minute hotel back in Hilo I've had nothing but contention & threats trying to be compensated for overbooking & my experience in Bali Hut. I have no reason to lie or make this up. Please Beware

First of all the house is not as large as they make it out to be. both my husband and I and our daughter and son in law wanted the two king beds. I might add it is not two bedrooms in the main house, one is a loft. the kids didn't fell comfortable sleeping in the cottage and wanted to sleep in the main house with us. the twin beds did not have a sheets or blankets. one of the king beds had not been changed from the last guests and had pubic hair in it, gross! The house was not clean to the average standers of a rental. The shower was in the hall to the master bedroom which was made of mostly black rock and had no glass in the window, just screen and shutter. it was very dark and the step down to the room was very high almost to the point of being dangerous for my husband and I. Bugs and geckos were in the house. it was very disappointing and we ended up leaving the next day. The host blamed us for the dirt and would not refund our money for the nights we did not stay. I just can't understand all the great reviews for this house!

There is a fully equipped kitchen inside the house so bring your provisions and enjoy home cooked meals. There is a farmers market in nearby Hilo for stocking up. The "included breakfast" is actually a voucher for a nearby bakery that makes delicious pastries and coffee. A perfect stop before heading up to Akaka Falls. You will experience everything the rainforest is known for, sudden downpours, humidity, bugs, and amazing night sounds. Fortunately, the mosquitoes didn't bother us because we had a half a dozen geckos patrolling our room. The aromas of flowers and foliage waft into your room on the ever present tropical breeze that comes up from the ocean. No man made A/C here, just nature. The semi-outdoor bathroom makes this a Hawaiian Fitzcarraldo adventure destination. Don't worry there is a second shared indoor bathroom for the city folk. I've stayed in plenty of European hostels when I was younger and this sort of reminds me of a grown up version. I've never booked an airbnb property before so I'm assuming most guests are stupid. There seems to be a sign on every wall reminding you of various house rules. I'm hotel people so I found that odd. I'm glad we found this place and had the chance to spend a couple of nights closer to nature.
