One of my favorite bakeries in Lisbon! I came across Sacolinha while I was Googling about for the best sweet treats in Lisbon, and was immediately drawn in by their massive selection and great reviews. Cascais is, unfortunately, quite far from the heart of Lisbon, but I was thankfully planning to make a trip out there as part of a tour group (shoutout to Buendia's Sintra / Cascais tours) so had the perfect opportunity to check out Sacolinha's giant pastry case. My mom and I decided to split an assortment, which included two mini bola de berlim, as well as two different types of castanhas de ovos. The bola were lovely; they were super soft and pillowy, and the fillings (one was egg custard, the other nutella, I think) were both great. They were a smidge too sweet and did slightly remind me of American donuts, but they were a bit softer and less overwhelmingly sweet than their US counterparts. My favorite, though, had to be the castanhas de ovos. I already love chestnuts, so having the world's best nut translated into a dessert was a dream come true. They were so delicious that my mom and I had to come back to buy a box of six to bring home with us. The store itself is a pretty simple, but large pastaleria. It tends to get pretty crowded, but there's, thankfully, ample indoor and outdoor seating. You order up at the counter, and then they'll log your order onto a standard card, which you can later take up to the register to cash out. It's a bit of an odd system, but honestly makes the ordering way more efficient, since you don't have to wait for everyone's credit cards to process or cash to get counted, and you can go up to the register to pay at your leisure. read more

Located on the Main Street in downtown Cascais, this place has a huge selection of sweets and pastries as well as some savory options. Staff were generally friendly although the cashier muttered something in Portuguese at me when I paid with $50 bill for 2 pastries. That's the only bill I had left as this place is cash only. I tried a beef empanada and a ham and cheese pastry. Honestly I felt it was underwhelming and the ham and cheese one was not good at all. Perhaps I should have tried something sweet. In anycase location and ambience were nice and easy access given located right on the main road. read more

Although these were not the best pastries I've had in Lisbon, they have a wide selection of pastries and breads. It's a very clean, neat looking bakery and it's really close to the beach so you can stop in after swimming to try some of their pastries. I like how they had mini pastries so you can buy and try them. That's exactly what I did, since I wanted to see what each one tasted like. read more

One of the only places in portugal probably that doesnt charge you for using the w.c. Great range of sweet and savoury pastries at affordable prices I had the bacalau which is mince cod fish in a pastry. Delicious and stringy. Not salty or creamy as i had expected. Quite dry I had a creamy saucy shrimp pastel and a delicious meat croquetta There are veggie options too And free aqua. read more

This place is a joke. I saw a good review from it possibly from LonelyPlanet but here's what happened.. you order at the counter and they give you a coded card (kinda like the ones you get at hotels) and that's how you pay at the end at the cashier. People don't really speak English. Thats fine. At a bakery one can point and understand prices..that's universal. A strawberry cake is a strawberry cake in Portugal like it is in NY like it is in any other country. The waiter drops off the cake and espresso and says "ni Hoa." I guess it is harmless though whys he need to do that? I'm not visiting frm Asia. No one says that to me in the States when i eat there. Is it a warm way to greet me? It didn't feel like it. So we had more time and we wanted another dessert so i ask the waiter and pointed at it.He either orders it or doesn't and it never comes. It's fine as long as they dont charge. So after waiting with nothing delivered even after a line dies down, i just go to the counter to pay my bill using the keyed card. But we get charged for the dessert. The cashier has an attitude, even though the display isn't clear(it only displayed the last item charged, not the total) so I'm unsure of the total. She doesn't speak English. So she gets pissed and thinks I'm stupid. I ask for the receipt, she gets mad. Slams it on me. I check the itemization so i see how the total is. And i see we got charged for the 3rd item we never got. So i show the guy at the bakery counter, the listed item and mimed never got it,pointing to the table we were just on. So they give it in silence, no apology and we eat it and leave. Friend who's been to Portugal many times says service is not their forte. You can say that again! It's fine to have locals work but better to have some with more friendly demeanor. read more
