Onsite made corn tortillas
James A.

Highlighted by Guy Fieri on Triple-D, Sabroso! Mexican Kitchen is located in Garden Grove, as a corner restaurant in the Harbor Plaza. It is very much an upscale Mexican restaurant, with a large and gorgeous dining area with a large bar and open kitchen. My wife and I stopped in for lunch before going to the nearby Angel's stadium for a ballgame, and found the food to be decent and the service to be excellent. It's a busy plaza, but the large parking lot provided plenty of parking spots. We were greeted at the door by our soon-to-be server, Andrea, and she was engaging and informative throughout our stay. This is the sort of hostess that I take recommendations from, so proceeded that way. Our waters were kept full throughout, and numerous servers stopped by to make sure we were OK. The food came out in stages, all clearly made-to-order, and staged really well. Chips and Salas ($3) - not complementary, but having free refills. It's worth getting for the price, as the chips are all freshly made from the homemade corn tortillas. And the two salsas were good. Signature Tamale ($9) - it seems expensive for just one tamale, but it was really good, with a good ratio of masa and carnitas. Two - three would have filled me up. Taquitos ($15) - 3 short but fat deep-fried wrapped tortilla around shredded chicken. My wife enjoyed it, especially dipped in the salsa from our appetizers. Camarones En Crema ($25 plus $3 for Diabla) - adding the Diabla was a mistake for me (I asked for light diabla...if this is low, I don't want to know what medium is), and I paid for it about an hour later. But the dish itself was good, with a strong mushroom flavor, consisting of 7 really good jumbo tail-on shrimp, cooked perfectly (with that light chewiness I seek). It came with an OK rice and refried beans. My original intention was to get the garlic version of this, but will probably go with more tamales next time. They do accept reservations, no longer through Yelp, but through one of the POS providers (Toast I think).

This was the first time visiting this restaurant, they are located as part of a shopping center, that way there's plenty of parking, as soon as you entrance, the waitress Andrea greeting me with joy, she literally knows how to welcome people. And after that she offered me the specials, also the regular menu, and indicate me the next coming event. The tables are not to close, so you can talk and feel good going to the restroom if you need, but the way even the restroom was clean and full loaded with toilet paper, cover seats, etc. I get the green Chile plate it has pork meat, very good size, they charge for the chips and salsa, I got them but didn't eat them. I was concentrated more on my plate, they have good music and not to loud, if you go to talk you can do that, also they can give you service outdoor they have a few tables and chairs. This is a family restaurant because they have a picture at the entrance, I'll return for sure soon to try more of the options they have. As far for my personal experience I recommend this restaurant. For the happy hour for drinks and Andrea mentioned also a happy hour on food, for more details contact them.

Stopped by Sabroso! Mexican Restaurant in Garden Grove for lunch today. OK you gotta give them props for having an exclamation point "!" In their name...way to prime the pump!!! I wasn't super hungry, so I was hoping for some à la carte options--but they don't do à la carte. Also went in craving crispy tacos and learned they don't offer hard shell tacos, despite some info floating around on Yelp. Small expectations, reset moment . This spot has a legit history though. Years back, it got national love from celeb Chef Guy Fieri of Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives game, and they still feature a few of the dishes he highlighted--worth checking out if you're a fan. They've recently moved to a new location in the same parking lot, and here's the funny part: you can still see the shell of the old restaurant sitting there. Once you look at it, you immediately realize... yeah, that place needed an upgrade. It was pretty rundown. The new space feels like Sabroso got a second life--upgraded bar, cleaner look, better vibe. A proper resurrection. I went with the blackened chicken salad and it delivered. Juicy, well-seasoned chicken with a nice smoky kick, crisp fresh greens, and a bright cilantro dressing that actually had some personality--not the bottled afterthought kind. Solid choice when you want flavor without the food coma. But the real win was the service. The staff was "hustling"...attentive waitress, other team members jumping in, lots of genuine smiles. That kind of energy goes a long way and honestly elevated the whole experience. I'll always have a soft spot for the old gritty Sabroso, but seeing where they are now... this glow-up makes sense. Sometimes change is for the better. Give the new spot a shot.

I said I would be back and here I am .... Enjoying the ambiance, with great music, service and amazing tasteful food and drinks!

Chile verde
Tisha T.

Stopped in while in Anaheim for a tournament ended up so glad I did. To start the service was friendly and fast. We ordered the pork chili verde and it was everything you want it to be--tender, tangy, and packed with flavor without being too heavy. The beef tamale was another win: super moist, filling, and honestly one of the better ones I've had in a while. I also grabbed a Modelo michelada and was surprised in the best way. The spice around the rim had this little touch of sweetness that balanced everything out. Refreshing, easy to sip, and absolutely worth ordering again. Overall, worth the trip for a satisfying meal that hit all the right notes. Would definitely come back.

Garlic ajo shrimp
Barbieejo A.

As we entered staff was friendly and we were quickly greeted. Our server came over quickly and we ordered drinks and dinner. Restaurant was closing soon. I ordered enchilada plate 1 red 1 green with cheese rice and beans. I felt the portions were off. Maybe because the end of shift? Beans were good but I wished I had more rice which had flavor and rarely do I ever find both I like and food came out hot. Enchiladas were cheeselicious and the red was great flavor the green sauce was a bit tangy for my taste. However I would order them both again. I didn't read the menu that well but I didn't see that it came with onions and cilantro on top of the enchiladas. I don't like raw onions. So yes to my fault for not reading the menu correctly. The other plate was garlic shrimp (ajo) very good nice flavor combo. Therefore I will definitely be back. I was told the mole was a Great option I missed. There were many things I didn't try that come highly recommended (yes after the fact I already had eaten) so Definitely be back. Super friendly and nice atmosphere.

Very poor quality of service. The staff was inattentive, and our server, Lizet A., was constantly running around but never actually checked on us. The overall atmosphere felt unwelcoming and disorganized. We were given a food menu, but no one informed us that the kitchen was closed, which was extremely frustrating and made no sense. If food isn't available, that should be clearly communicated upfront instead of wasting customers' time. To make things worse, toward the end of our visit, they suddenly came back and asked if we wanted to order food -- completely contradictory to what we experienced earlier. Overall, not a good experience at all. I wouldn't recommend this place if you're looking to have a good time. There are definitely much better bars out there worth your time and money.

My yummy Camarones Al Mojo de Ajo
Gen G.

Had an industry event here and was quite happy that I now know where to go when I'm craving for garlic shrimp. The best garlic shrimp (Camarones Al Mojo de Ajo in the menu) I've had that's near my place! The way they serve this was perfect - Mexican style, so the plate came with rice, beans and warm tortilla. The servers were great - polite, personable and efficient, especially the lady manager who was very professional and knowledgeable of her product. Told us that the place is a family business and had been operating it for years. The atmosphere and interior of the restaurant is a mix of relaxation and celebration..a great hangout place. ONE IMPORTANT TIP though-- make sure you ask if there's any additional charge for extras. Our group wasn't happy with the additional $3 charge that showed up on our individual bills. When we placed our orders, we were asked how spicy we want our dish to be. Most of us asked for medium and were never told that they'd charge extra for it.

Margaritas!!!

Locals spot that was featured on diners drive ins and dives. The margaritas were refreshing and delicious. Get the chicken wings! We'll get everything it was all delicious with a fun bar and lively interior. Family run business with love in every part with super friendly service. Check it out and happy hour is great too!

Carne asada with fries
Cristian B.

This place was packed Andi was amazed how well the service is and attentive it is. My food came in hot and crunchy as I expected and the flavor was delicious it didn't despair my thought of what I was thinking I was going to receive. I say the atmosphere is cheerful and lively. My friends enjoyed.

Frank P.

I bookmarked this place a long time ago after watching Diners Drive ins and Dives. I finally made it. The restaurant is nice with both indoor and outdoor seating. You can see the kitchen and where the fresh tortillas are made. I ordered the two cheese enchiladas with rice and beans. I also had chips and salsa. Everything tasted good. The beans were soupy but perhaps a style I never had. Service was very good. The restaurant was in a dead zone where I had no internet. I couldn't check in. If I'm ever in this part of town I'd return.

Ask the Community - Sabroso! Mexican Kitchen

Are reservations recommended for a Thursday night at 6:30?

No, not necessary unless it is a holiday weekend!

What are the prices?

Look at their menu online or the pictures of the menu to get an idea. I posted some photo of their menu on their yelp page

Are the pork or chicken tamales spicy hot? I'm trying to find tamales that are made with little or no hot spices.

They are very accommodating. Specify and order with confidence.

Are the Beans, Rice, and enchilada sauces red and green all vegetarian? beans - do they have lard?…

Not vegan or vegetarian. Authentic Mexican food with lard.

Do you have vegan rice and beans?

Haircut place for kiddos

Do they have mariachis?

Never seen any the many times we've been there. It's a small intimate dining area so there wouldn't be enough room.

Do you have outside dinning or take out only?

I didn't see any outdoor dining.. there's a bench outside next to where you'd park the car but I wouldn't eat there.

Where's the menu? The web adress link is to a place that sells grill lights and barbecue sauce.

Here is the web address to the menu. https://www.sabrosomexicangrill.com/

What did Guy F. Eat here?

Chamorro (Slow Cooked Beef in Red Chile), Pork Tamales and Chile Verde

Do you sell tamales by dozen?

Yes we do. We carry pork, chicken, and rajas (cheese).

What are must-have dishes to eat here?

Anything with carne asada! Especially the carne asada plate Chicken tamales (green tamales) The… Read more

So they have gluten free options? My wife is severely affected by gluten.

For that you will have to ask them to be safe.

Do they cater?

Call 714-721-9259 for catering.

The owner said the refried beans are vegetarian, but the server told me they have chicken stock. She also said the rice, which is listed as vegetarian, has chicken stock. Does anyone know if that's true?

I do not know. But, most all refried beans I know if are fried with pork lard or bacon sometimes. I am allergic to pork and I am able to eat these beans. They only told me the beans are not fried with pork. Sorry.

Are their beans made with lard/pork?

Both our refried Peruano and black beans are vegetarian. However, our Sabroso! Beans contain homemade chorizo chunks which is type of pork meat.

Are there taco Tuesday specials?

Hello James, I've only been there once. Honestly I don't believe that have "Taco Tuesday's" but everything on their menu is a reasonable price. (714) 537-7080, just in case. ENJOY!!

How busy are Sunday late mornings? There would be three of us around 11:00-11:30. Would we be waiting forever for a table?

Not at all you will be fine usually it gets busy a bit later

Donde tienen más lugares?

Solo hay una ubicación 13129 Harbor Blvd., Garden Grove, CA 92843, teléfono (714) 537-7080

Do they take reservations?

We called and asked about reservations; at the time, June 2017, they did not. When you arrive, get your name on the list to be seated. Friday and Saturday night [after Disney closes], the restaurant is busy, so plan on a 20-30 minute wait. The… Read more

We attended a special Chartreuse tasting event at Strong Water which was being held in honor of…read moreChartreuse week and Chartreuse Day 1605 (May 16), the annual celebration of Chartreuse's origins and history. The tasting featured a great lineup of green and yellow Chartreuse paired with small bites. It concluded with a complementary Chartreuse-based cocktail from one of five recipes. Brand ambassador Taylor guided the event and began by telling us about the unique history of Chartreuse. The tasting started out with a small spoonful of Vegetal Elixir Chartreuse to warm up the palate. This is the base spirit of both green and yellow Chartreuse and clocks in at 138 proof. It was surprisingly not harsh, but immediately kicked my salivary glands into overdrive. I didn't even know that vintages of Chartreuse was a thing, but Taylor walked us through tasting three different vintages of both yellow and green Chartreuse, and it was surprising how different they were. The lineup concluded with more rare varietals of the green elixir 1605 and yellow cuvee. Great job, thanks Taylor! Chef Kling presented each small bite which included a crispy Icelandic cod, a roasted beet crostino, and a lamb slider. All of them had a five star list of ingredients and were delicious. Strong Water is known for their excellent cocktails, but their food is also great. For my cocktail at the end of the event, I had the Bar Flower (Green Chartreuse, Crème de Cacao, Pineapple, Lime). This was so good, with the herbal and chocolate flavors perfectly balanced. It was served with a flaming lime half. This was such a great event! Chartreuse retails for around $100 a bottle, and the higher-end varieties cost even more. At just $45 per person, this event was an amazing bargain. Strong Water frequently hosts great events, so keep an eye on their social media for upcoming dates. I really love Chartreuse, so I went back a few days later on the last day of Chartreuse week to try a few of the other limited time cocktails. I started out with their twist on a Grasshopper (Chartreuse, Crème de Menthe, Chili Liqueur, Crème de Cacao, Cream, Cane, $22). This was a great classic Grasshopper, but the Chartreuse added a herbal complexity, and there is a dash of heat on the finish from the chili liqueur. Next I had the Flare Gun (Yellow Chartreuse, Overproof Rum, Italian Bitter, Lime, Cane, $20). The yellow Chartreuse definitely comes through, but it's softer and has a light sweetness, unlike the green variety. Even though it contains overproof rum, it is perfectly balanced and not boozy at all. I usually don't like bitter drinks, but the bitterness was at a perfect light level. I finished off with the Tales from the Black Lagoon which is my favorite drink here, and it's also a favorite of many of the bartenders. All three cocktails were a home run. Chartreuse is an expensive spirit, so those drinks cost a little more than average. Shout out to Karen, Joey, Edgar, Jordan, and Ying for excellent hospitality, as always. Strong Water is our favorite place. We can't wait to go back!

As I went alone, my reservation was for a bar seat, which was cool as I was able to watch the bartenders make lots of very cool shaken and stirred drinks. This place serves absinthe drinks plus absinthe served the traditional way (cold water on sugar cube into the alcohol). I did not try that, but was tempted. We arrived around 6pm on a Sunday evening and we were bummed that it was packed full inside. We decided to go have a drink upstairs, and then come back down later to see if it was any less busy. There must have been one big group who left because 30 minutes later, it was completely empty inside. There are a few wood tables outside of the entrance and several two seat tables along the outside of the side of the train, but for a first visit we definitely wanted to be inside. When you come inside at BXCR, there are two long green couches along each side that wrap around to the entrance to maximize available space. There are two steamer trunks on each side that serve as tables. We were surprised that all of the tables had a Yahtzee game on them, and we had a blast playing that while we enjoyed our drinks. If you happen to roll a Yahtzee, they give you a candle as a prize. There is good background music playing that fits the environment. There is some good décor with overhead baggage racks and international clocks on one wall, and gauges on the wall next to the bar. There are some small rectangular windows along the top of both sides, and some curtained windows on the right side which do let a little light in. When the main entrance door is opened before its dark outside, it does let quite a bit of light in and kills the ambience temporarily. I would recommend coming closer to or after sunset to not let any outside sunlight interfere with your experience. The drinks are made at the bar in the rear where there are several seats and a little standing room. It wasn't on the current menu, but I saw on a previous menu they had an Amaretto Sour so I started with that, and it did not disappoint. It was nice and frothy from an egg white and had Angostura bitters on top. My girlfriend started with the Calm Cruise which was great. It's basically a Pina Colada, but with an additional honeydew flavor in the background. For number two, I tried the C-League cocktail. The smokiness of Mezcal has grown on me lately if it is not the primary flavor, and in this drink it is at a nice level somewhere in the middle. The cucumber and cilantro are definitely present, along with a little heat from the ancho verde and a little sweetness from the Luxardo maraschino. This is a excellent easy-drinking tequila cocktail. Her number two was the Aviation which she enjoyed. Vince was our main bartender along with Sarah. They were very friendly and fun to chit-chat with while they were mixing up our drinks. This is definitely a cool place to check out, and we will definitely return.

I was lucky enough to stumble across this gem of the center of OC when they first opened - and I am proud to be a regular here. I don't know how to go somewhere else - because I feel like the staff are giant gems in this jewel of a spot. Winters is a curator of boozy information that has helped me learn about "gin" and "root beer whiskey" so I can sound like an adult-ish purveyor, when really I know close to nothing except being a willing student to his creations. Dan the Man and Jacob always see me raise my hand in the corner of the bar, like the student I am, and have been willing to fill in the blanks for me when I know I am of thirst, but do not have the words for what to order. Every person working in the well has treated me with kindness - they have taken the time to get to know me, and I will be forever appreciative of how they have taken care of me over the years. But the real joy has been the transformation that this spot has for building a community of people in Santa Ana for real recognizing real. I have been bringing my Dad with me to play pool for the past few years. Sometimes people ask me if he plays professionally, I am terrible, and my skill incline is slow, he is patient and plays with the same level craftiness that the staff offer the cocktails. My Dad is always stoked when we have time to go have a few hours of games at 616 - especially now that there are regulars on 4th street that are excited to see that he is there playing - and they rush to write their names on the chalkboard to challenge him - or beat him in a game they really earned the W. On lazy Sundays, I watch couples sit with their drink, listening to Jazz, and watching my Dad whoop my ass while making amazing shots. I am forever grateful to Memo who sometimes takes a break from his shift behind the bar to give my dad an actual challenge - which allows me the chance to watch my Dad enjoy fellowship around the table. Knowing the table was a relic of the bars former self, and knowing the history that this spot has in Santa Ana is a reminder that so much around us can change - but it is those moments of the crack of the rack, the cheer of getting the combo shot, and the shake of hands when it's over that shows that it's not just about the pool table - but about the energy of a place that is welcoming and curated by people who care about what they do - and care about who comes through their doors. Thank you Jason and Mike B to bringing this to 4th St and supporting the community that was already here - and for building a community for the future. Thank you to Christina and Brandon for always having amazing pictures, decor, and fun events at 616 that help introduce new folks into this great spot. Time is short. Learn about Root Beer Whiskey. The drat beer selection is solid and the cocktails are well crafted. Highly recommend this spot. One of my favorite it's Downtown Stabba Ana
