I have not been here in a while, and I forget just how good this place is. Love the authentic Peruvian dishes at very affordable prices. These dishes could easily fit inside a fine-dining restaurant. This time, I had the Paella Valenciana, and it hit the spot. The combination of creamy rice, sausage, chicken, calamari, shrimp, onions, and lemon juice was exactly what I needed. This has such an authentic flavor and freshness to it that is definitely not your run-of-the-mill tex mex, which of course I still love. My church family comes here for Christmas Eve dinner every year. I've never been here with a group smaller than 20 people, but even so I think their service is the best it could be for a group that large. I got the peruvian tamal y los platanos. Not the best fried plantains I've had in town, but still good. And you can't beat a solid tamale. The menu is huge, offering some classic Mexican dishes, peruvian food and some other unique options. It's a huge space. The margaritas are not my favorite, and I even sprung for the top shelf. Too sour mix-y. First impression, 90% of customers were gringos when I walked in, but the strip mall where it's located looked sketchy so I wasn't sure what to expect. Gotta admit I was pleased to see a big list of Peruvian dishes, which is why I stopped by since it's impossible to find peruvian food in north Alabama and I happened to be in the area. As a peruvian I was excited to see options. Sadly the food was so-so. I ordered the tallarines verdes but with a milanesa de pollo instead of steak. The noodles were good, but the milanesa was very thin and salty. I got a tamal, an empanada, papa a la huancaina, and tiny alfajores to go. They gave me the wrong empanada, beef instead of the chicken I asked for, and it was so bland. The tamal was ok. The huancaina was bland as well. At least the alfajores were tasty. I might try it again, but sadly not that good for Peruvian food. read more

I ordered from Sabor Latino in Homewood through Uber Eats and really liked it! And it was my first time trying Peruvian food. I got the Paella Valenciana and the Tamal Peruano. The paella had soft, tasty rice with a mix of meats and seafood such as shrimp, calamari, oyster, chicken, and sausage, and it was full of flavor. The tamal was soft, and the chicken inside was yummy and cooked well. The food came warm and in good packaging. The portions were big. I will definitely order from Sabor Latino again. I was drawn in by their restaurant week participation. The restaurant was less than 20% full on this Saturday night and stayed at about that level of business.....so not really a hopping location it seems. After looking over the menu, I realized the restaurant week menu wasn't really discounted, just pieced together regular menu items into a multi-course menu. As such, I opted to just order this Peruvian noodle dish as that's all I really wanted anyway. The noodle dish was 4-stars as it was served hot and flavorful. The noodles themselves were just okay, obviously not fresh but rather pre-packaged with no chewiness to them. The complimentary chips and salsa were average, something to keep you occupied while waiting for your food but nothing special. Chips were thick and salsa not too flavorful. The service was non-existent other than getting your food. No refill of drink. No check-backs. Can't even get the bill without flagging down someone to ask for it....and then waiting for a very long time for it！ read more

Unsuspecting in a strip mall, sabor latino is the only place I know of in town to find Peruvian food, though they also have a full Mexican food menu. The place is expansive and one of few places in town you can walk in and most likely secure a large table without a reservation. The place was very close to completely full on a Friday night at peak hours. Service was very good, our server clearly had a lot of tables and managed to keep our chips replenished for our table of 7. I enjoyed my margarita. The menu has maybe too many options, they could probably make it a little smaller and still do well, but none of our 7 different dishes were bad, in fact we each said our meal was very good, some said great. They all came out hot together, and our order was perfectly correct including customizations. Our server spoke both Spanish and English. I'm removing one star only because the food wasn't mind blowing or the best Peruvian I've had. Though I suspect part of that is knowing which items on the menu are the best. I will definitely be back to try more items and this is really a wonderful place to bring a group and enjoy drinks, appetizers, and dinner. We had a great time on a Wednesday night. If you order a meal, you can get a max of 5 small lime margaritas for $1 each. We went with the frozen but you can also do on the rocks. You get chips and salsa upon arrival. The seating area is much larger than I expected and it was not packed on at around 8:15. They had on a soccer game with music playing so it is very loud. If you are looking for a quiet date night this is not it. It is lively but enjoyable. They are very loud when it comes to birthdays so that was nice to see. We ordered the burrito supreme and Arroz Chaufa. The burrito supreme was very mediocre. The beef was seasoned in a way I was not used to. But it was not overbearing. The Arroz Chaufa was good. It was also different. I got it with chicken but I think it could have used some shrimp. They do have a seafood version but I wanted to play it safe for my first time. The menu is large so there is something for almost everyone. Overall, I will come back especially on margarita night. I will definitely try something new next time. read more

I absolutely love Mexican food and was looking for something quick and easy on the pockets for lunch so I decided to try take-out from here. I haven't been to this restaurant in about 4 years and the last time I ate here it was pretty good. I order the chicken fajita quesadilla that had bell peppers, onion and cheese and a beef soft taco. When I opened the container it smelled amazing, but the taste....not so much. The chicken on the quesadilla was super dry and they barely put any cheese on it. I was charge $.50 extra for salsa. Most Mexican restaurant I got to chips and salsa are included. The salsa tasted more like of a tomato sauce. The beef on the soft taco tasted...let's just say not fresh. $5.50 for the quesadilla and $3.00 for the taco was definitely not worth it all. read more

I stopped in for National Margarita day. The place is huge with a lot of seating and the staff was extremely kind and helpful. The margarita was good and strong. That's definitely a plus for me. The tacos were delicious. I definitely was full but I wanted more! The salsa was amazing! It's definitely one of the beat salsas I ever had. A bit of a drive from our hotel but was worth it. It's in a Latin flare strip mall. The fish was very fresh and tender inside crispy outside. Came with a lemony salad w/picked red onions and avocado slices. I substituted rice instead of fries no problem. Fried Guava was ok but I asked for hot sauce and they brought me a yellow garlicky hot sauce that picked picked them up a few notches and the rice. Beef empanada was excellent with a crispy outer crust. Had a papaya drink too cool down. Service was excellent staff very friendly and accommodating. I came here to destress post exam on Wednesday evening with a big group of 8, and we were seated immediately. The location is in a slightly run-down strip mall and I wouldn't have thought that the interior of the restaurant would be so spacious when I saw the store front. We got complimentary chips and salsa while we perused the menu. I was originally pretty skeptical about coming here, but was intrigued by the idea of $1 margaritas (upon purchase of at least $5 of food). Upon skimming over other people's reviews, I decided to order the highly recommended Arroz Con Mariscos, and it was fantastic! The portion was huge, I ate a little less than half of it and took the rest home for additional 2 meals the next day. I would definitely recommend anyone coming here to try the Arroz Con Mariscos! The other things my friends ordered (tacos, burritos etc) looked like standard Mexican food fare (looked a little mediocre honestly). The margaritas were good! The $1 margarita special is only for the small lime margaritas. My first one was a little watered down but my 2nd and 3rd ones were much better. I attribute it to the relatively busy night the servers were having. Our server seemed a little (read: VERY) annoyed with our table and service was a little slow but I wasn't in a rush so I didn't mind too much. We use to come here often but it had been some time that we hadn't visited Sabor Latino. I know the owners and they are really great people. This visit I noticed they had renovated the place and it looks really nice. The menu even changed and it looks very pretty with many pictures. For a drink I had the pisco sour. I really enjoyed it but want to try the passion fruit version next time. They have great options for food and also great specials on drinks. I can't remember the name of what I ordered because it was in Spanish but it was a very soft beef with cilantro sauce and a side of rice and beans. It tasted like a home cooked meal inside a restaurant. My husband ordered a fish stew and the fish is imported from Peru. I thought that was very unique. The seco combinado con frijoles is possibly my favorite food from any Birmingham-area restaurant. I would be happy to eat it once per week for the rest of my life. The pickled onions pair so well with the cilantro sauce and earthiness of the beans. Other excellent dish: anticuchos. The food was pretty average, but I would recommend going to this place on Wednesday's for $1 margs! Do note that you have to spend at least $5 for your margs to be $1. My party of 15 came here around 5:30 and there was plenty of seating. The service, on the other hand, was pretty bad. At the beginning of our meal, our waitress was pretty good at checking on rather we wanted any more margaritas, but towards the end, she never came around. My friend wanted to leave early, but our waitress took way too long in getting her the check. My friend ended up leaving and having somebody else spot her. Waters were also never refilled. The restaurant didn't seem that busy, so I'm not sure why service was so bad. read more

Decided to try based on recommendation without looking at reviews on Yelp. I wish I had looked beforehand, not that I wouldn't have still tried but would have been more informed about what to order. I did not like having to walk through the many smokers outside on benches to get in the door. I was seated in a reasonable amount of time and order taken quickly. I ordered from the lunch menu - taco, chili relleno, rice and beans. It was good but just the typical Mexican that you can find most anywhere and nothing that I would go out of my way for. Whenever we decide to come here, we always view it as a treat. It isn't a place we frequent weekly. But we are always happy when we do. First of all, we have never had to wait to be seated and never had bad service. The drinks are well priced. $2 Mexican Beers on Monday and Tuesday (I remember that specifically because that was the special on our last visit). And a pretty good happy hour other days. Margaritas aren't anything extraordinary, but you can't go wrong with a beer. It is mentioned in other reviews, but their Mexican fare is not their best. It's decent, but that is not why you should go. Their South American menu is what you should go with. I want to explore that part of the menu more. But it is hard for us to go away from what we think is one of our favorite dishes in Birmingham. The Arroz Con Mariscos is FANTASTIC. If you are not very adventurous, the seafood includes muscles and calamari. But if you are open to that type of thing, a must try. The portions were cut down recently. So we typically split an order and each get something else. My wife is a huge fan of their tamales. But in our experience, you should stick to getting them on the weekend. I think they might be fresher then. The location and interior might seem a little sketchy. But worth the trip if you choose wisely. read more

A Latin Restaurant in Birmingham? Yes! I was very pleased with the food and drinks. I arrived with my family and we were immediately drawn to the pitcher of margaritas! I mean who can resist margaritas? I know I can't. Good choice. It was delicious. The restaurant itself is nothing special. It kind of reminded me of a high school lunch room. It was not very updated and seemed a bit "blah", but then again, these are usually the best restaurants. The menu is pretty diverse; they have typical "mexican food" such as tacos, refried beans, quesadillas, etc. And then they have a "Peruvian section of the menu! Smile on my face. I enjoyed everything I ordered. Of course we had to order the ceviche based on recommendations and all I can say is Que Rico! It was the best I have ever had. This was the worst dining experience I've ever had in my life. A friend and I came here on a Wednesday, drawn in by the $1 margaritas. They first took my license, assuming it was fake for some reason? I am very much of age and this had never happened to me before. After that, l ordered the fried rice. What I got didn't resemble the menu pictures AT ALL. It looked like a completely different dish. And the taste was horrible. I sent it back after one bite. Or at least I tried to send it back. The server told me that wasn't allowed after I explained that I didn't like the food and wanted to order something else instead. The manager comes over and asks, I kid you not, "why did you order this?" I then explained that it wasn't what I expected. After a hard time, I reordered, and got a decent enchilada. Nothing special. I've eaten at Sabor Latino Twice now, the first time the food was pretty good and flavorful, this second time.. Not so much, everything that wasn't burnt black was pretty bland. This review is based on my August 11, 2013 visit. I had the Sabor Latino Fajitas; it's a fajita mix with chicken, steak and shrimp. And as you can see in my pictures posted from this last visit, the food was burnt black, to the point of it not being edible, especially the food that was on the bottom layer. But I am not one of those people who send food back unless its undercooked, so I just enjoyed my meal the best I could.. My girlfriend even mentioned that her favorite dish there, the pollo con champinones (a dish she has eaten many times here) was bland and not as flavorful as it use to be. All in all the restaurant is ok I guess, Like I said before, one time it was great, the next time.. not so much.. The service is good, the prices are good etc etc.. This is my go-to dinner to pick up on the way home from work. The beef enchiladas are my favorite, but my roommates always order a variety of tacos. Their food is never soggy despite having plenty of delicious sauces. They provide plenty of chips and salsa when you are getting your food to go. Everything is always well packaged, hot, and ready to be picked up when I arrive. All staff that I've seen have been wearing masks for the entire time I was in the building, and were very friendly. I went here for the first time in about 8 months this week, and was taken aback by the changes. Inside has been remodeled some, new menus, etc. Usually good signs. But onto the food... Now, the food wasn't awful. It was definitely edible. However, my husband said the sauce on his enchilada tasted like it came out of a Chef Boyardee can. I ordered something called "Pollo de Champiñones". It was grilled chicken breast topped with sautéed mushrooms and cheese dip, steamed rice, and steamed vegetables. The queso tasted like the pre-made dip you get from the refrigerated section of the grocery store. Chicken was pretty solid otherwise. But the vegetables... These gems were straight out of a Birdseye Steam Fresh pouch. I literally served a bag of those to my daughter and husband for dinner just the week before. Not a bad side dish, but definitely not what one expects to be served when going to a sit-down restaurant. All in all, we were pretty disappointed by the food, and I won't be going back. I had no idea Birmingham had a Peruvian restaurant, until a friend took me last night on a whim. If you have a friend that knows the language and culture it adds to the experience. She knew just what to order. The mango margarita is ridiculous! Get the big one and enjoy. We started with tamales and fried plantains. The tamale was amazing! The mass had a different looks and taste and the chicken was very flavorful. For entrees we had the Lomo saltado and aji de gallina. The lomo was a beef and peppers dish with a rich brown gravy and fries mixed in. The gallina was like a Peruvian curry and it's served with hard boiled eggs. Very good. This place has been around for years and it never disappoints. It once used to be out weekly dinner spot for $1 margaritas, which were always delicious. The service is always timely and wonderful. The food is to die for, I highly recommend the Arroz Chaufa, its like fried rice, but better! Also the Pollo con Champiñones! It's a piece of chicken breast in a white mushroom sauce and a side of rice, its delicious! They offer fried plantains and yuca fries as appetizers too, that's all on the Peruvian side of the menu. Hey fellow Yelpies! You know, I love ya but I have been spoiled rotten by excellent Mexican food in Texas and California and this here Sabor Latino place just did not hit it for me at lunch time. The situation was that I was VERY hungry and not really knowing exactly where I should go and actually in this shopping center by accident. So there is this place and I decide WTH and head in there. The place is empty for the most part. The floor is kind of crumb filled and the tables are not really that clean and kind of sticky like. OK, fine. I am not a huge germophobe and have eaten in different conditions in other countries. Fine. I am a VERY friendly and polite monkey everywhere I go to everybody and say things like "hello", "good-morning", "please", "thank you" and I also use the terms "sir" and "ma'am" to everybody. Period. The waiter seems very displeased with my very existence. I get cold chips, really lame "salsa" that tastes more like from a bottle or jar and worn out plastic cups. Fine. I ask about the tamales because I am CRAVING. First question I ask: Are your tamales fresh or frozen ? Waiter seems insulted that I would dare to ask and insists they are fresh! OK. I ask if they are pork and he says they are chicken. OK. So tamales arrive and they are good sized. They come with a bowl of Chili Con Carne which I sample with a chip and it is not too bad. Fine. I remove husks and tamales are wet like they have been frozen but de-thawed. I don't know how to explain but you can just tell the difference. I have eaten thawed frozen tamales and they are good but just require a special way of being re-heated. They need to be thawed and then reheated NOT in a microwave. I am starving so I dig in and there is an enormous difference in the corn to meat ratio and its just not that great. Too much soggy corn. OK? Sorry. Maybe on another day. The guacamole was good and fresh made but the rest of my experience was not that great. Spanish rice was not bad and the beans were well.. beans. I will say one thing in their defense. This place claims to serve South American and Peruvian food and I did not go for those specialties. I did not do the Ceviche because of the vibe here and was not in the mood for it. I was hungry for Tamales and was disappointed. I might consider trying this place again and going for their supposed specialties because this visit just didn't hit it ! Damn fine food. Here's the trick: The folk who run the place are not Mexican: they just cook Mexican food 'cos that's what you're looking for. They're Peruvian. Camarones a la Diabla are deadly. Margaritas are fine - if a bit wee (but also cheap). All the Peruvian stuff is fab. If you're in BirmingHAM (As opposed to Birmingh'm, 'round from where I'm from), get here. read more
