I got the croissant triple 'B' and my partner got the oeufs au benedicte. Although both dishes were good portions, I do believe that the prices were a bit pricey for what they are. Moreover, I thought that the service was okay. When we first came in, they said they were cleaning a table for us but it took about 15 minutes for us to get seated. In addition, the dishes took about 30 minutes to come out, so it was a bit longer than I expected for brunch. However! We did get a change to meet the owner, who came in as we dined. You could tell how involved he is in the business and he is so lively. It made the whole experience very fun, and we even sang 'Happy Birthday' for a couple people who were celebrating their birthdays that week! Because of that, I think the experience of the bistro itself was one of my favorites. Aside from that, I thought that the food and service were alright.

A sensor's world…read more Sight. Smell. Sound. Taste. Touch. Kann was an experience for all five senses, from the moment we sat down at the chef's counter. First came the sight. The colorful contrast of plates and bowls against the kitchen island immediately caught my eye, while the open-kitchen design gave us a front-row view of the chefs and kitchen staff preparing each dish. With about a dozen seats at the counter, we could watch everything unfold right in front of us, including the pastry chef's station in the kitchen. And the smell began to make its way. Even the pastry station had its own sensory signature. I could smell the toasted, almost campfire-like aroma of the charred meringue from the Baked Haiti dessert drifting past us. Sitting near the pastry corner definitely had its advantages. And then there was the sound of the crackling and roar of the live fire. The chefs moving around the kitchen and calling out dishes. The bartender shaking and stirring drinks, with the unmistakable sound of ice. Conversations from the dining room humming in the background with happy customers surrounding us. Every so often, a chef would give a dish the final okay before it made its way out. Next to the kitchen was a wall of chopped wood, a fitting visual reminder that the "behind the hearth" dishes were made with live wood. The restaurant describes itself as a Haitian live-fire restaurant that combines Haitian cuisine with ingredients of the Pacific Northwest. The food was just as vibrant in touch and taste. We started with the Akra, crispy taro root fritters served with remoulade. The outside was wonderfully crisp, while the taro gave the fritters a soft, satisfying interior and a little spicy kick. The Griyo, Kann's twice-cooked pork which is the national dish of Haiti, comes with bannann peze, avocado, and pikliz. The combination of rich pork, crisp plantain, creamy avocado, and bright, spicy pickled cabbage was fantastic. The pikliz (pickled cabbage) in particular added exactly the kind of sharp, acidic contrast that kept the richer flavors balanced. The Epis-Brined Chicken was beautifully cooked and well seasoned, served with corn, tamarind barbecue, and basil. The epis marinade gave the chicken layers of aromatic flavor and was cooked nicely with crispy skin. Then came the Ribeye...one of my favorites of the evening. The beef was rich and deeply savory, paired with ti malice, blistered tomato, and garlic confit. The tomato brought brightness while the garlic and Haitian flavors added another layer of depth. And of course, dessert. The Baked Haiti combines coconut sponge cake, Bavarian cream, Haitian-spiced pineapple, charred meringue, and basil. The smell of the toasted meringue reached us before the dessert even arrived, and the combination of warm, caramelized flavors with the tropical pineapple was a wonderful way to finish the meal. Kann also has a full cocktail program, zero-proof cocktails, wine, and beer, so there is plenty to explore beyond the food. I can absolutely see why Kann received the James Beard Award for Best New Restaurant in 2023. Chef Gregory Gourdet brings Haitian heritage, live-fire cooking, Pacific Northwest ingredients, and an incredible attention to sensory detail together in a way that feels complete. And for a sensor? What a playground.

Parking: easy to find something paid. Paid parking ends at 7pm. It was only around $3 when I arrived late before 6pm. Lobby: very small! It's a narrow hall. Food: Wouldn't get again: akra--fried balls with a mayonaisse-y dip -griyo twiced cooked pork--the pork was heavily spiced, salty, and salty. I expected more pork; you get around 4 small to medium chunks. This is also served with fried plantains and spicy kraut. I'm okay with some level of spice, but I wasn't a fan of this dish. -hiramasa: a raw fish with cold coconut meat bits, wasn't something to write home about Would get again: -head on prawns: well-spiced, enough meat to round out getting a bunch of smaller dishes -peanut creamed greens: I loved this! It's creamy, nutty, and sweet with heat. -baked Haiti: I wish I could have this now. It's the perfect blend of a toasted sweet meringue balanced with bitter pineapple and salt flecks from the caramel. It's the perfect size for 2 to finish a meal. Service was top notch and everything was explained! We got drinks too--they were just okay. I recommend this spot as a Top Chef foodie fan to experience all the chefs we've loved on the show.

From the front gate to the front room, you can feel the calm, one-ness of Jamaican hospitality. We were greeted at the gate and lead to our seats by a wonderfully positive gentleman who welcomed us to our first visit and took our order with a smile. We tried the Jerk Chicken with Bread. Served with rice and cabbage. All very flavorful and well portioned. Couldn't pass up trying several Pies. The beef patty was solid...but that Jerk Chicken is SOOOOO good, it was the Chicken patty that edged out above the veggie and beef. All were baked with the best patty crust any hand pie could offer. We're going back and this time we're bringing the girls because the other folks dining there were raving about the Ox tail. Wife loves Ox tail and we had no room in our belly to give it a go. The culinary experience was truly remarkable, and the customer service was exceptional. The restaurant's location is also highly favorable, contributing to its overall appeal. As a Jamaican who grew up in the Miami neighborhood known as "Little Haiti," I have had ample exposure to Haitian cuisine, particularly griot. My childhood memories include saving my allowance to purchase griot from a Haitian lady's house on Fridays, with the assistance of a neighbor who spoke her language. My first taste of griot occurred when I was 11 years old. I felt compelled to share this background information to establish my credentials in assessing the quality of Haitian cuisine. Tap Tap Cuisine proved to be an exceptional gem in this regard. Plus, my 2 friends who accompanied me are of Haitian background. We all gave it a 10 out of 10! In all areas. From the moment we arrived, we were warmly welcomed by the owner, creating an immediate sense of camaraderie. By the time we departed, we felt like part of the restaurant's extended family. Tap Tap Cuisine operates as a family-run establishment. The ambiance took me back to an island setting. I will most DEFINITELY be back again! If you are in or is visiting the Portland area. Do yourself a favor and check them out!
