Oxtails and rice & peas

It's always good to switch up the menu and try something different. I found out about this business by reading a list published of the top 5 eateries to try in Hampton Roads. Located next to an African hair braiding business, it can be a bit unassuming when you are looking for this business. The parking lot is shared by other neighboring businesses but I haven't had any issues with parking. The ability to use contactless pay depends on who's working and has a grasp on the functionality of their system. There are daily lunch specials and you can opt to dine in or get your items to go. I never felt the need to call ahead as I was always served promptly. There are some renovations ongoing to try to expand. There is booth seating and some at the counter. There are alcoholic beverages served here if you're trying to get wavy. The flavor of the food has been consistently delicious. Portions were appropriate and those working there were always welcoming. Language can be a barrier but someone will happily come from the kitchen to help make sure that you get what you want/need and everyone's happy. There is a menu and a rotation of daily offerings to choose from. I would definitely recommend this location to someone who is looking to switch it up.

Food is good and the service is good. The caveat is the food is costly and you don't get much food with your dishes but not bad.

The food at this location was pretty good. I can't complain after not eating some Spanish food for more than 190 days. I had me a plate of fried pork chops, yellow rice with peas, some tamarindo juice, a presidente and a tres leches. The price was hella right and the waitress was very attentive. I'll definitely go back for another plate of food.

Food was delicious and came out fast. Service was attentive. It's not a large restaurant but there is indoor and outdoor seating. My toddler who is a picky eater enjoyed the rice and platains. Would definitely recommend if you like authentic Caribbean and Dominican food.

Really hungry and didn't want to drive too far so we decided to try this spot close to home. The oxtails were plentiful, and equally delicious. I have never got so many in an order in my life. They were kinda tomato based, so very different than Caribbean- but still tasty. The rice was perfectly cooked an the beans were seasoned just right. The Dominican fried chicken was also tasty, it appeared to be burnt- however that was definitely a disguise because it was super juicy inside. The yellow rice was also delicious. Plantains were sweet and perfectly cooked. The empanadas were ok, cheese better than the chicken. They have daily specials and oxtails being the Friday special so it's safe to say we will frequent here on Friday to get one of my favorite dishes

Stewed chicken with yellow rice and black beans

It's dinner night out and Christopher and I were looking for something different tonight and of course hard decisions lead to Yelp! Tonight we ordered the Saturday specials. I had the Stewed Chicken with yellow rice and black beans and Christopher had the Pork Shoulder with yellow rice and black beans and we shared a chicken empanada. Everything tasted delicious and was prepared in great time. Wait staff were very friendly and gave us the privacy I needed. Had enough to take home for later tonight when my munchies kick in lol. I said mid meal I'd bring someone back here with me. Thanks for the good food and service.

Shrimp Mofongo - to go

Truly a hole in a the wall with great food. From having lived up north, the open kitchen and mom and pop style restaurant is prominent in the Spanish community so it was all too familiar. Spanish music playing in the background and Spanish being spoken, it's bringing me all back to that time. Now for the food- shrimp Mofongo, mangu and Morri Sonando. The Shrimp was big and plentiful and the plantains was packed with flavor. The Mangu was also a great combination of fried cheese, fried eggs, salami, pickled onions and more plantains. From what I was told it is a Dominican staple that you will only find on a Dominican menu. The Morri Sonando was my favorite thing! The combination of milk and orange juice is a great concoction! The drink wasn't too sweet and very refreshing! This place is a true Dominican restaurant and can't wait to go again!

Mofongo con carnitas

Really liked this place. Great Dominican food. As a NY native, it really feels like a neighborhood place you'd find in the Bronx. Being walking distance from my house, we will return. Tucked right off Little Creek, on Sewells Point near the Walmart, its easy to miss, but worth finding. The mofongo was fantastic, just enough spiciness and sweetness for a great balance. The carnitas that came along were really well-seasoned and tender and juicy in the middle. We also tried the Domincam stew. It was simple, but had a nice flavor. It was a blend of chickem, pork, plantain, corn, and potatoes. Definitely look forward to exploring the rest of the menu..

Went there for lunch after the recommendation from the ladies at Elegante Hair. The food was excellent and tasted like it was cooked in the home kitchen of the warmest Caribbean lady. The oxtail was tender, well seasoned and best of all fairly priced I will definitely go back and would recommend it to the world

It's alright. Not the best. Chicken empanadas were very small and dry. Stewed chicken tasted a little like vinegar, but was flavorful. Looks like the older pictures/reviews for this restaurant were written when the restaurant was owned by a different owner.

The restaurant was slow at the time so I got helped and seated quickly. I ordered the shrimp mofongo which was delicious! What I like more is that it's a decent price because I went to another restaurant that served the same dish but WAY more in price. The staff was friendly and welcoming.

Pernil (slow cooked pork) Arroz con gandules (rice w/pigeon peas)

OMG... 1 week in Norfolk and we keep coming back to this place... we get different plates and it doesn't disappoint. Evenings are not packed but good music and delicious food. Pernil, yuca, sancocho, arroz con gandules, empanadas, plantains, and breakfast... We have tried all these this week... Ladies are so nice and helpful.

Mangu, sausage, fried cheese and eggs.

This is the first time I have ever had Dominican food. Omg it was delicious. We went in to try mangu which we have heard a lot about. We were not disappointed. They have two different kinds. We had the one made of yuca. We weren't sure which one to try. So the nice lady let us try the yuca and it was delicious. On top of the mangu they had a pickled onion. It came with two eggs, sausages, and fried cheese. The fried cheese was SO GOOD!!!!!!!! They give you so much food. I wasn't able to finish mine. The people were so sweet and friendly. When we're on our way to leave they were beginning to set up their lunch menu. The food looked so AMAZING. Being Puerto Rican I noticed the pernil and he let me have a sample and put a sauce on top. WOW!!! It was so juicy. We will be coming back to try the lunch menu. I highly recommend the mangu we had today and from tasting the sample we were given the pernil as well.

Pre-pandemic, this was a place where we would have dine-in visits with friends of ours from a social group or just the two of us. It was probably close to a year since we last appeared so it was time to stop by. Similiar to the past visits, I called in our orders. They greeted me promptly when I walked in where there was only one table occupied. Quick and easy. For our orders, which both served as dinner and lunch for work at our respective sites, we chose their Cubano sandwich with our usual sides (fries for myself and plantains for Sophia). As always, the sandwich was pretty good packed with ham and roasted pork, pickles, cheese and mustard (both had no mayo). I would've liked for more fries in the box, but I had enough for both servings. La Pena Horeb came through once again. You know I'll be ordering takeout from here down the road. Till next time :)

I am obsessed! This place is hands down better than any other restaurant on the peninsula and south side.

I like that the menu had a variety of choices. Shay took my order and she was super friendly and patient. She answered all my questions, and the other guy who was with her bagging food was nice also. I got the pork and rice and chicken and rice box, with chicken and cheese and beef and cheese empanadas. I'm very picky about empanadas, so I sat in the parking lot and ate the first chicken and cheese one, then I levitated somehow back inside to order more. They were hot and delicious! The sauce that goes with it is crack also!! Mmmmm. The pork and chicken with rice tasted authentic like someones grandma was back there whipping it up. I won't lie, by the looks on the pics I didn't expect much because everything just looked brown. But it was good flavor with both dishes and a good portion. There were a few pieces of tough pork, but that was no issue, I still enjoyed it. They let me try the cake which I couldn't decide on, that was so nice of them. That cake is good!! Everything a pound cake should be!! I'm definitely getting that when I go back. I want to gatekeep it so bad, lol, but they deserve for them to be sold out!! The restaurant itself isn't big. It's more of a takeout spot, but there are some chairs and tables inside. It's decorated nice and has a welcoming feel. It was clean inside and the vibe was good!! When I got there, no one was there but 1 customer. When I left everybody and their mama was there! What, how, when?? I got my food and joyfully skipped out ready to grub like a chunky kid at Grandma's house!! Lol. I took a nap when I got home!! Lol. Definitely check them out!

The young lady who took my order was friendly and assured me that I would enjoy their food. I got there around 5pm and it seemed like she was closing down even though the sign said they closed at 7pm. There was no one else in the restaurant and it's only for take out. The restaurant was clean and is decorated with cultural items. The menu is not extensive but it's very traditional. I ordered their Arroz Morro with bistec encebollado and it came with a piece of maduro (for my husband, I'm vegetarian). Translated means white rice cooked together with black beans, steak with onions and a piece of ripe plantain. It was a healthy portion and everything was cooked well. Unfortunately she couldn't assure me that they had any vegetarian items so I just ordered for my husband. I was disappointed with the lack of any vegetarian options.

Our waiter Ronald was friendly and helped with recommendations. We went with the appetizer sampler that included beef empanadas, tostones, chicharones de pollo and one other delicious item that I forgot the name of. We added morcilla (blood sausage) and yuca fries to the appetizer round. Both were very good. We enjoyed the whole red snapper, churrasco mofongo, and bacalao guisado mofongo. All were excellent but we found the dishes with the mofongo to be our favorites. We ended with flan, tres leches cake, and platanos maduros. Unprofessional and Discriminatory Treatment by Bartender Juan…read moreI came here with two of my friends (gay), and we all ordered the same drink, a pitcher of sangria that we shared equally. Out of nowhere, the bartender, Juan, decided to cut off only my two friends, even though we all drank the exact same amount. He told me I was fine to keep drinking, but refused to serve them and asked us to leave. The way he singled out my friends felt unfair, inconsistent, and discriminatory. They weren't acting drunk, disrespectful, or causing any issues. We were all just enjoying our time. Instead of explaining anything professionally, Juan handled the situation with attitude and made us feel extremely uncomfortable. This is not how customers should be treated, and it definitely ruined our experience. We won't be returning, and I hope management addresses this seriously.
