This a strip mall restaurant that stays busy, everyone of the staff stays within their roll and all is done in a very organized manner. With this visit compared to 1 a year or so before, this visit had much higher prices. There are a few tables with stay occupied and bar stools for countertop dine ins.They do have a steady take out business. We were lucky to grab a table as someone was leaving. I ordered a hot dog with raw onions . And my husband got a cheesesteak sub. We shared the fries. This hot dog was very slender, almost to the point of why bother. And the bun was not the freshest. The flavor of the hotdog was a bit spicy, I ate it but would not order it again. Just disappointing. The fries were fine and the cheesesteak was adequate. Terrible customer service. The sign on the door states that the grill closes at 4:45 pm. The employee saw me getting out of my car and locked the door at 4:40 just as I approached it. Then the other employee who was already cleaning the grill, before 4:45 pm looked at me and mouthed that thay are already closed. If they are going to close before the posted hours, change them! I have no idea how this place is receiving the stars that it has or how the health department has not closed it. Approaching the door should have been my first clue to turn around and leave. It was dirty and full of random pictures. Entering the store I noticed two older women who, no real judgment, looked as if their life choices had not been kind (maybe they were up really late). One was refilling bottles and the other was likewise busy. Neither greeted me as I entered and stood at the counter. As I turned to leave, the bottle filler finally asked if I needed anything. I really should have kept walking. As I modified my initial plans to order a whole meal, I simply asked for a hotdog. As she wrote up the order, the other woman came up and without washing her hands, pulled out a frozen hamburger patty and threw it on the grill that already had at least a dozen hotdog links sitting on foil. She then, still barehanded, dropped and pressed down a hamburger bun. I guess she saw the anguish on my face because she pulled a pair of gloves from a box, put them on and then grabbed a fist full of onions and dropped them on the still frozen hamburger patty. This place looks like it needs a power wash from top to bottom and the folks who work there need a refresher course in food handling and safety. I couldn't take it any longer and left. Never again. First experience was terrible. I walked in and was not greeted by anyone working. When When I get to the counter, I had my phone up to my ear and because I was listening to a call & a lady with a red shirt told me "I'll help you when you get off the phone."When the food was ready I asked if I could have their signature sauce on the side. A lady with a bang and ponytail with a purple shirt on proceeded to tell me "You should have asked me in advance for a sauce because I have to charge you. When I mentioned I didn't know she put her hand up to my face as if she was trying to mute me like I was a child. There was another lady working with her & she slammed the sauce on the counter in front of me instead of putting it in my bag. When you find a place that has a Ms. Pacman can it be bad? I think not and was really impressed with my new find today. What a cool surprise to check out Uncle Al's for the first time today with my daughter and discover what all the Yelp has been about for this little dog joint. You could actually drive by this establishment for 9 years and never know it's there, just ask me. Uncle Al's is in a small strip with a dry cleaners, barbershop, tan salon, Chinese joint and a couple other stores. Parking can be an issue, but usually not. The location is awesome along Shore Drive. A walk inside gives you the feeling of a small locals eatery with it's long bar and quirky sign and photos everywhere. There is also a TV for your viewing pleasure. On this day it was about checking out the hot dogs which they are known for. The waitress was immediately at our table and when we said new customers she gave us options, but ultimately said hot dogs on a first visit was a terrific idea. I got a hot dog with chili and cheese and daughter plain. We also got a root beer float to share. The float was out so quick our head was spinning and ohhh delicious. The food was out almost as quick as the float. Both of us liked the quality dogs with a slight crunch and toasty buns. The chili was really good too. I had to just shake my head that we had not tried before. A look at the menu again and I thought this could be a regular place for a while with the other selections to choose from. A quick stop to the restroom revealed a very small, but tidy facilities. An issue with the door lock was annoying. Also a few towel racks not in use under the sink need to be removed. Just picky me I know... but I like my toilet seat to fit the bowl. A toilet seat is not an expensive item to replace, get it done Al. Yes this just is a small hot dog place that should not be worthy of such praise. But when you got it, you got it! Uncle Al's has IT! Awesome service, great quality food with reasonable prices. Famous Uncle Al's was the first stop on my cross-country hot dog trip. It was mid-afternoon and the place was empty except for a gentleman sitting at the end of the counter. Come to find out, this man was THE Famous Uncle Al. We talked some about our trip and had our picture taken with him. He was very kind. I got one hot dog "Al's Way" (slaw and mustard) and one with Chili, Mustard, and Slaw. Both were good. The slaw was finely chopped and had good flavor. The chili was tasty as well. The dogs were reasonably priced. The service was quick and friendly and the restaurant was clean. Those location is so close to the beach you can grab some dogs and take them with you as you enjoy the water. read more

When I think of a hot dog, I think of all beef, crispy skin that snaps as soon as you take a bite of it. The best part of the bite is the juiciness of the hot dog. I didn't get that here, unfortunately. I ordered a hot dog with chili and sauerkraut. The hot dog was small and it tasted like the really cheap ones you buy at walmart. Maybe I didn't order the right one? I also ordered the garbage burger. Deep fried juicy chicken breast, hamburger, cheese, lettuce, onions, and tomato. The burger patty itself was super thin, so you barely tasted the burger. The fried pickles were really good. i ordered my food and received it within 5 to 7 minutes. Service was great and the prices are unbeatable. I saw that they had lots of daily specials. I wouldn't mind coming back just to try one of them. There are multiple Uncle Al's around the area...this is about the Shore drive location. Hot dog places have come and gone over the past 10 years or so, but Uncle Al's just keeping plugging away with great dogs served up quick and hot. It's what they do. The smoked sausage and NY hots are great, too. Top it off with some chili and onions and you're in business. The prices are low, so make sure to tip the servers. Small restaurant. Meant to be small. It is like a 4 seats to a table if a fifth or sixth person shows up don't fret pull up a chair situation. Doesn't handle big crowds. Lines out the door if maybe 7 families show up. If it is not over crowded, the service is still pretty slow for the amount of food you ordered. I guess that is what freshly cooked food is. I ordered a hot dog, It came out pretty dry. I put mustard on it, but it was still a dry hot dog just with mustard. It was warm though, so I guess that counts. Hit the spot, like any hot dog with mustard would, but I've had way better. So if you don't like hot dogs with sour kraut or a ton of weird stuff on it, not the place for you. This place never fails me. I went around noon on a Sunday and the place was slammed with customers. There were three employees and they could hardly keep up. They serve the best dogs and burgers. Dogs are Boarshead frankfurters and the hamburgers are all beef cooked on topped of raw onion. I always order the home cut fries too. Where I go for the best executed cheeseburger in the area. Thin patties with just the right amount of crispiness, gooey cheese, bacon, grilled onions, and chili are my regular burger. I can't really give this place more than three stars because it's a hot dog joint but for a hot dog joint its almost as good as it gets. They use nathan's hotdogs which have that perfect bite when you start to dig in. I wish they offered more toppings like coleslaw, BBQ, bacon, etc. They only offer the basics like mustard, onion, cheese, and chili which, don't get me wrong, are great, but I like to try different types of hot dogs. I'll definitely continue to keep coming back to this place over and over again because the service is friendly, the food is pretty cheap and I love their real french fries...they actually use a whole potato and shred it right in front of your eyes (if at the bar) and drop 'em in the fryer..nom nom nom. Pretty darn good. Nothing fancy, your food is served on paper plates, and they only take cash. Went there on a Saturday afternoon and the place and parking lot was packed; wound up parking behind the building in a space that may have been for employees at the dry cleaners a few shops away (sorry). The service was quick and friendly. Fries were fresh cut and served blazing hot and crispy straight from the fryer. The NY hot had great spice to it and the burger was thin but juicy. When the employees had no idea what a Chicago dog was we knew it was going to be a bad day. We have been to the Kempsville location and they know how to make killer hotdogs so it was assumed this location would follow suit. Unfortunately even the chili dog was terrible, the hot dog tasted like a basic cheap dog with canned chili on it. Fries were just okay. The establishment itself was falling apart the ceiling was dripping onto the table and water filled the lights....what a disappointment. Two of the employees were even chatting about if the heats back from the health inspector ‍ the only saving grace was the younger waitress with long black hair was very friendly and attentive, she couldn't help they had no clue how to make quality. The girls were lovely and the shop had a friendly hole in the wall feel, however, the hotdogs were mediocre at best. Previous comments mentioned they use Nathan's, however, I swear we had Boar's head hotdogs today. Both are awesome regardless. The waitresses were very sweet and accommodating to my husband and I as well as our 2 tots. We ordered 7 hotdogs as well as an order of onion rings and crinkle cut fries. The total came out to $26, without tip. Unfortunately, our lunch fell short of being memorable. I'm still on the hunt for a good hotdog shop (in the HR) that can beat Papou George's in Newport News. My son and I tried this place for dinner last night because we weren't that hungry and who doesn't like hot dogs? Dogs are an American staple, and any spot that claims to be "famous" indicates a local affinity to the offerings. I go to my Dad's hometown in western Maryland - and their famous hot dog sauce and hot dogs make me salivate. This hot dog stand is a little different as it is actually located in a strip mall off from the main beach. It shares the building with a barber shop and some other stores. It is located on Shore Drive almost at the extreme northern end and isn't anywhere close to where most beach-combers could get enjoyment out of it. Inside it is like most hot dog joints - long counter with stools and seating with tables and chairs against the opposite wall. There are nostalgia photos of Uncle Al and various local celebrities hanging and a "eaten most dogs in one seating" hall of fame on the wall opposite the door. I didn't really experience anything spectacular from the dogs I ate. I got myself four hot dogs fixed "all the way" with meat sauce, onions, mustard. The dogs themselves are Nathan's so you can't go wrong, but the meat sauce was just so-so. It didn't indicate to me a whole lot of creativity as it just tasted like ordinary chili-sauce you might buy at the supermarket in a can. I think this hot dog stand would be a nice spot if you are in the area and have a craving for coney dogs but I wouldn't make a special trip out of it if you were elsewhere on the beach. read more
