The barbecue jackfruit plate one, and it $22 was basically enough food for two people. The jackfruit barbecue ribs were incredible: I've never ordered a jackfruit dish before and this was delicious with fantastic barbecue sauce that was tangy but not too sweet and had lots of smoky depth. The corn fritters for like dumplings and very tasty. The garlic bread was just like I would make it home and the rest of vegetable salad was very delicious. They do not have decaf coffee since they only have one coffee grinder - But I tried a couple of chicory as a flat white with coconut milk and was very pleased with the flavor and the drink it's self. The owner of the restaurant was raised on a dairy farm! She and I talked about all the problems that dairy farms and people are causing to the environment generally and especially in New Zealand with use of chemicals and the runoff from agriculture. Peace begins on the plate - and a full belly begins at Kaiaroha!

Definitely a high class vegan joint. The emphasis here is more on savory (sorry, savoury) items…read morerather than more sweet bakery items like we have in the United States. Still, comparisons with Timeless Coffee (Oakland, CA) and The Butcher's Son (Berkeley CA, not the one in Auckland) are apt. On my first visit I had a classic kiwi item, which is hard to find in the US, a sausage roll and second visit cheesecake. My only complaint is that it probably could have been half the size! The owner was super friendly and we exchanged notes on vegan biz here and in the States. Finally, the coffee was excellent and more like my American coffee expectations with a bolder flavor. Must stop for any vegan in Auckland.

I had the "creamy mushrooms" (garlic butter mushrooms, cream, toasted sourdough) and my sister and husband had burgers. My mushrooms on toast were delicious, but my sister and husband didn't think the burger was anything special, especially not for nearly $30. (The food was very expensive!) I did love the decor and ambiance though. The restaurant had a covered seating area that was bright and full of plants, and made you feel as if you were in a plant nursery, or, a garden shed. Today, my spuds are unpleasantly crunchy raw, the pork sausage pale, not fried. It was unsettlingly stone cold i figured it was direct from the fridge, so not even microwaved. I ejected it from my mouth at speed. and the tomatoe was over cooked. Not even a whisper of butter on my sour dough toast. My partner also had the same. He said his spuds raw and cold. And same sausage problem. His toast was not only dry but rock hard. The eggs tasted....odd. Almost no flavour. You'll be hard pressed to find me spending another $60 here. I think a McMuffin would have been nicer. Rad, you've really let your self go. Super disappointed.

The cafe itself is not very large, but they still seem to be able to fit a lot of us in. Just don't expect to have loads of time to chill after eating, as you can feel bad for the people waiting! I like how they provide you water when you arrive, and I generally like the service that the staff provide us. They seem to all enjoy working there. The food is a bit funky, as in they are usually relatively common meals but with a bit of a twist, to keep you on your toes. I quite enjoy the pumpkin omelette with a side of potato gratin. They have both gluten free and vegetarian options available. An outside table works well for people who come along with their doggos - not nice during bad weather, but most of the time it's lovely to be outside and have the option of bringing your dog (i.e. good pit stop on a walk for example). It's not crazy expensive, as well. Not cheap, either, but I'd say it was about average breakfast prices. Will definitely be going back!

I got one of their egg sandwiches, which I didn't realize would be so big. It was decent tasting, but a bit too much for me. Instead, the bf and I came here primarily to partake in one of their ridiculous milkshake. Yes, a milkshake for breakfast. Looks like a lot of the other patrons, most notably the younger crowds, were here for that same reason. We opted for their strawberry diva, which was a 1.5 foot tall monstrosity of decadence and sin. It had white chocolate bits, strawberry jam, sprinkles, thick strands of cotton candy floss, whipped cream, a stick of rock candy, along with the requisite strawberry ice cream that made up the milkshake. Just a messy, sticky treat, and it tasted like pure sugary sweetness. Not sure if other places in Auckland have things like this, but if you happen to have a hankering for sweets that only a very tall milkshake would fulfill, this would be a pretty safe bet for you to try out.

I came on a Sunday morning (expected it to be busy, which it was) with my boyfriend. We got a little two person table and scoured the menu. I had read online that they have vegan options. They are well known for their shakes, which look 1000% amazing and I really wanted one (legit the reason we came here). But when I asked the server, she said there were no vegan options for the shakes - the only vegan option on the menu was the acai bowl. I love a good healthy vegan option, but when you go somewhere hoping for a shake and come out with an expensive and moderate acai bowl, it's a tad bit disappointing. The server was really nice and the place n is cute, but they seemed completely understaffed. There was like one server for the entire restaurant. I ordered the acai bowl and my boyfriend ordered the avo toast. We had to ask someone if we could order after waiting for like 15 mins and then we waited another 25 mins for our food to come out. I try to be understanding when it's busy as I've worked in restaurants but it seems like they definitely need to hire more people. I'm hoping I just came on an unfortunately understaffed day. I wish they would offer vegan shakes. When they do, I'll be back!

I never understand when I offer to pay money for food (or anything), and the person offering it doesn't at least acknowledge that I'm doing them a solid. Setting that aside, the food I eventually received was fine, but nothing special. Their idli didn't seem quite fresh, but the sambar to dip them in was pretty spicy. Their chole bhatura offered an impressive array of garnishes for the chickpeas and three pieces of bread (normally I've seen two or one big one). Those chickpeas were flavorful enough, but oddly enough, not as spicy as they looked. It was a decent value meal, and they had an appealing menu, but they didn't do much to impress me.
