Had dinner here solo. Chose to eat at the bar. Wouldn't recommend eating at the bar. The staff were nice, but I felt I was in the way. I had the dry goat curry with basmati rice. Was staying at a hotel a block away. I thought I would try this place. The food was good and the service was excellent. My only reason for the 4 stars instead of 5 is that they were unable to adjust the spice level in anything. Even the dal makhani (black lentils simmered in a tomato sauce) which has never been spicy anytime I have eaten it was a bit spicy. So if you can't handle spicy, this place is not for you. read more

Coming from Glasgow, we're quite used to intense Indian cuisine, but this place is definitely a cut above anything we've previously encountered. Definitely one of the best Indian restaurants I've ever tried. Portions are not huge and they encourage you to share dishes, which is a nice way to explore the menu. Neither of us was particularly starving (unusually!) so we were fairly restrained in our menu choices. Herself went for the Ghilafi fish, exquisitely presented as 3 parcels wrapped in banana leaves, with a pile of delicate red onions on the side. A treat to look at as well as eat. I had the Chepalu fish curry with a plain nan on the side; it was a little spicier than I had anticipated, but super tasty and it was soon demolished. We finished up with a Gulab Jamun between us, which has long been a favourite sweet of mine. Great dishes, efficient and friendly service, nice ambience... Both of them tasted really good although Butter chicken was slightly towards the sweeter side!! Great Indian meal close to the Sky Tower. Good size Resturant pretty full for a Thursday night but we sat right away and service was quick. Everything is made fresh so takes a little extra time but it wasn't more than 25 min. We had the Bang Bang Butter Chicken, Bade Miyan chicken, and garlic cheese naan. All were perfectly seasoned and the chicken very tender. However, we weren't told that rice did not accompany the meal so we had to wait for our rice order to eat. The drinks are very original! I had a Gin drink that came out with a smoking cinnamon stick and my husbands drink came with two parts. The waitress poured the drink at the table made with hickory smoke... smelled sooo good. Outstanding food and great value. We tried the lamb shank main, and two starters. The starters we tried we're very different but extremely tasty. The Vegetarian Manchurian was spicy and very, very flavorful. The second was a Day Kebab, a pancake filled with a delightful cream cheese/yogurt filling. I would highly recommend these. They rarely pick up their telephone and the one time a member of our dinner party reached them they said they were currently full but there would be a table in an hour. We tried calling them after that to confirm but no response although we left several messages with return phone numbers. When we arrived (just 4 people), even though there were several tables that looked empty for quite some time, they told us the tables were reserved and they could not seat us for another hour and 20 minutes. Very recently changed their name from Handi to "1947 Eatery" - I walked past it a couple of times because I didn't know it changed. Anyway - the food is amazing, and I am an Indian food connoisseur. Their "thing" is that they don't kill the flavor of the foods and spices with ghee and cream, like they said "a lot of other Indian places do" (I have yet to experience that, but OK). Who doesn't love butter and cream - right. Moving right along... We had the Zanzibar Shrimp appetizer (I think it was Zanzibar, anyway it's the only shrimp appetizer so you can't miss it) and the Paneer Tikka - both were off the chain (good). Side note: Paneer Tikka Masala is my favorite Indian dish, which features a ton of heavy cream. When they told me they removed most of that from their dishes, I was skeptical but went for it anyway. No qualms here - it was a delicious version of my favorite dish. On top of cool ambiance (dark, rustic, modern), they have a young, energetic staff; they were very, very kind to us. This was a very nice restaurant. We enjoyed the tandoor lamb chops and butter chicken! Clean and pleasant atmosphere.

Solid menu but the portions are very small. We ordered the Chilli Chicken, Lamb Chops, Chepalu Curry, Butter Nans. The Chilli Chickens were very tasty with a little kick. However, this dish is more Chinese than Indian. The lamb chops were tendered with tasty fries. We enjoyed Chepalu curry sauce but had to fish for a few pieces of fish. The butter nans were soft and freshly baked. I ordered the homemade ginger. Again it was tasty but was served in a very small and thin glass. Our server was attentive at first but disappeared at the end. We had to wait 15mins for our check. 1947 needs to improve their service and food portions to justify for the amount of $$$ charged. read more

Handi is absolutely delicious and the prices are so reasonable for Indian cuisine. It is located on Federal across the street from Sky City. The restaurant is nicely decorated and there is ample seating. Their menu has all of your traditional Indian dishes and descriptions of each one which were much appreciated. All curries come with rice. We ordered the Lamb Madras $21 and Vegetable Korma $16. The portions were generous. I was surprised how big of a bowl the lamb curry came in. We ordered a side of plain Naan and for only $3.50 you get three huge slices. If you are a big fan of spicy food, I recommend getting Indian Spicy. We ordered one dish Hot and it was on the milder side. Service was friendly when we went but we were only of the only tables at the time. I would love to come back to try Handi's lunch menu. read more

All I can say is, O.M.G. I can't eat Indian food anywhere else now. 1947 Eatery has the freshest food, with home-cooked flavour. I live way to close to this place. My current favourites are- - the behl puri - a 3 piece appetizer which is just a taste explosion. - the tandoori chicken, which is well worth the 30 minute wait. It's intensely flavourful with a smoky rich taste. But only two thighs so if you're sharing, you just might want your own. - the butter chicken is fantastic, as are all of the paneer dishes, and the eggplant - the best garlic-cheese naan I've had anywhere Rice is ordered separately; if you're keen for something different, get the rumali roti instead of rice- it's a large, thin fresh roti bread, which you can eat your curry with in place of rice. Very nice. Like rolling tacos. The menu seems to update often, so I'm always motivated to try new things in addition to my favourites. read more

Wow, what great food! We shared a Lamb Shank Nihaari with Khameeri Naan plus jasmine rice, after 2 small dishes, Dahi Kebab and Vegetarian Manchurian. The Dahi are 3 small potato pancakes filled with cream cheese and yogurt, mildly spicy and lucious. Vegetarian Manchurian are 6 crispy carrot and cabbage balls in a wonderfully spicy sauce. We had high hopes for good Indian food coming here. The place is a little hard to find due to construction but once you get inside you'll notice the awesome bar and ambiance.
