Prawn Curry, Chicken Mappas & crunchy naan
Amanda G.

Ela specialises in Keralan cuisine; tropical South West Indian. One of the dishes on their menu is named "Butter-Less Chicken" - this ain't your typical Kiwi curry house! The staff at Ela were friendly & helpful, giving us menu tips & even wine match advice. They're currently running a special with a bottle of Spice Trail wine by Lake Chalice for only $30 with food. If you haven't tried these varieties of wine, they're great matches for any kind of spicy food. Our Shiraz/Gewurtz mix was delish, and complemented the Prawn Curry, Chicken Mappas & Ela Dosa that we ordered really well. For 3 people. this was ample food. We were also served individual plates with salad & rice as well as crunchy triangles of naan bread as complimentary extras. The chicken curry was creamy, coconutty & more subtly perfumed than spicy (we opted for medium for all the curries). The prawns were also tasty in a similar coconut cream based curry, but the stand-out dish was the dosa. The crispy, slightly sweet pancake was wrapped into a cone & placed over a bowl of delish vegetable & paneer tomato-based curry and dhal. I know what I'm ordering again next time! This was the first place I've visited thanks to a positive Yelp review. Located in Elliott Stables, its a great place for a big group, with many different cuisine choices available for those fussy friends.

I ordered the market grilled fish and got a serving of little chunks of a fish which definitely wasn't white that was topped with a nice spicy sauce. I forced myself to eat some of the $20 fish but the rice was perfect. The garlic nan appeared to be soaked in garlic seasoned oil. I won't be eating here again.

Whatever you do, order the Ela Dosa - a crispy, light pancake served with a delicious combo of paneer, green beans and a spiced tomato salsa, and dhal. One order is enough for 3-4 to share if you just want a taster with your mains. We also ordered the chicken boneless curry and a prawn curry, which were good but not great. Both had a subtle spice, which was somewhat interesting but they desperately needed heat. Partly our fault I suppose but we ordered both curries medium and I think they were more mild. We did, however, try a great bottle of vino called the Spice Trail. The owner recommended it and it matched the curries perfectly. Crafted by Lake Chalice, it's a red blend of Syrah and Gewürz that designed to compliment dishes with spice. Definitely one worth hunting out if you hit up an Asian BYO!

The food was wonderful! The portions were perfect and the price was great. The hardest part was walking past all the other places that also looked really good but I'm very glad I made my way to the back of the area where Ela is!

I had some garlic Naan bread which was good, but as described in a previous review, could be a bit thicker.

We were a hungry group of four girls and at 17ish dollars a head we were well catered for. Starters we went with the lovely owners suggestions and tried three starter between us, one potatoes dish one fried coriander (trust me you just have to try) and one fried sago dish all came with lovely dips and sauces and at $4 or $5 each an impressive serving. Main We shared 2 Thali's which is a kinda set plate with pickles, salad, spiced rice, dal and breads. every was very tasty Desert Even thou we where heading into the too full stage by now the deserts were interesting enough to tempt us, I had the Shrikhand which was sweet and full of flavour and interesting blend of cardamon and sweet sugar. a little defiantly goes a long way... All washed down with Mango Lassi which looked a vibrant colour. I will be back no doubt with more friends to tow to show off this little gem in Sandringham.

My cousins were rugby players and we were all poor students so we loved it but I've got admit the food wasn't great - super heavy, sugar laden curries. A far cry from what you'll get at Satya. For starters, Satya is a South Indian restaurant so the curries are a lighter style with a thinner sauce, generally made with coconut. But on top of this their curries are made with a certain finesse - no heavy hands here - instead a delicate balance of spices, without all the sugar! Their menu is extensive and for someone like me, who is no expert, it can be intimidating. Luckily, two of our dining companions had travelled extensively throughout India and guided us through the ordering process. We ordered several dishes to share. My favourites were the Dahi Puri entrée - delicious bit sized morsels of potato & chickpea with tangy tamarind chutney and yoghurt on a crispy chickpea cracker - and the eggplant coconut with potato, green peas and ginger. To be honest, I don't think you could go too far wrong no mater what you ordered. Because there is so much to try Satya is best enjoyed with a group, plus it's BYO and they take bookings! It may be more expensive that your typical Indian takeaway but trust me, it's worth it!
